Baseball 2015

Randy Johnson (97.3%) was a five-time Cy Young Award winner. Pedro Martinez (91.1%) won three Cys and led MLB in ERA five times. John Smoltz (82.9%) amassed 213 wins to go with 154 saves. Craig Biggio (82.7%) racked up 3,060 hits while playing three positions up the middle. Together, they make up the Hall of Fame's Class of 2015.

The induction ceremony is scheduled for July 26 in Cooperstown, N.Y.

How the fuck did John Smoltz get in before Mike Mussina?

Randy Johnson was incredible.

by Anonymousreply 4January 6, 2015 10:30 PM

Smoltz is a homophobe declaring gay marriage could lead to marriage to animals. Not long after making these statements his heterosexual marriage ended in divorce.

by Anonymousreply 5January 6, 2015 10:45 PM

Pedro Martinez just gave a press conference going out of his way to say that he never took PEDS, even when there were many opportunities to do so.

I don't know, don't think I believe him for a second. He was always a scumbag.

Randy Johnson too had interesting career, when he suddenly got amazing in his later years.

Is Pedro Martinez gay? He pings for me

by Anonymousreply 7January 7, 2015 12:47 AM

Pedro was a toothpick from his first pitch to his last. I totally believe that he was PED free.

Piazza deserves to be in. Best hitting catcher of all time.

Mussina over Smoltz? No way. If he wasn't a Yankee no one would even no him. His best days was as an Oriole and no one even remembers he was on that team.

Raines HAS to get in next year. Second best leadoff hitter of all time.

by Anonymousreply 8January 7, 2015 12:54 AM

Raines, Piazza, Trammell, and Schilling (yes, he's a right-winger) deserve to be in.

Source: Werth set to undergo shoulder surgery

By Bill Ladson | 45 minutes ago

WASHINGTON -- Nationals outfielder Jayson Werth will have arthroscopic surgery on his right AC joint on Friday, according to a baseball source. He will be out two to three months. The club did not confirm that the procedure was being done.

Werth has had problems with the shoulder since August, when he hurt it while making a catch against the Phillies at Nationals Park.

A few days later, Werth had an MRI on the shoulder, and the results revealed an AC joint sprain. He also received a cortisone shot, but he was able to play the rest of the season, including the postseason against the Giants. Werth had one of his best seasons with the Nationals last year, hitting .292 with 16 home runs and 82 RBIs.

Once he returns to action, Werth will be Washington's left fielder.

Hot Stove rumors link Hamels, Shields to NL West clubs

Padres not shopping Myers in potential trade for Phillies' ace; D-backs in mix for free-agent righty

By AJ Cassavell / MLB.com | 55 minutes ago

As they have for much of the offseason, pitching rumors dominated the headlines Monday, as free agent James Shields and trade candidate Cole Hamels could be close to landing with new teams.

Hamels, according to a report on CBSSports.com, is apparently still a serious target of the new-look Padres, who have already shaken up their roster this offseason with the additions of Justin Upton, Matt Kemp and Wil Myers.

Shields, meanwhile, could find himself on a different National League West team, with the D-backs reportedly in the mix for his services, according to FOXSports.com.

The Hamels report notes that "nothing is imminent or even on the front burner." But Hamels, a San Diego native, has been linked to the Padres before.

The Phillies' asking price for their three-time All-Star left-hander is reportedly very high -- and understandably so. At 31, Hamels is clearly still in his prime, having posted a 2.46 ERA and a 1.15 WHIP in 30 starts last year. He has four years remaining on a contract with an average annual value of $24 million per season.

The report also adds that the Padres are not shopping Myers in a potential deal for Hamels. The most likely offer would instead be a package of Minor Leaguers, with Austin Hedges, Matt Wisler and Hunter Renfroe -- the Padres' top three prospects according to MLB.com -- expected at the top of Philadelphia's wish list.

On the Shields front, that $110 million offer he received from a mystery team is apparently for naught. According to the FOX Sports report, it came from a club with which Shields isn't interested in signing.

Already this offseason Shields has been linked with Boston, Miami, San Francisco, San Diego and Arizona, as well as his latest club, the Royals.

Shields posted a 3.21 ERA last season, his eighth in a row with at least 200 innings pitched.

The rumor mill wasn't limited to those two aces, either:

• Cuban-born righty Yoan Lopez is officially on the market after he was cleared by the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control. MLB.com's Jesse Sanchez reports Lopez already has multiple offers and could break the $8 million record for largest signing bonus to an international amateur.

• Dillon Gee is apparently being sought after by three NL West clubs -- the Giants, Rockies and Padres -- according to FOXSports.com. He posted a 4.00 ERA last season, his fifth in the Majors -- all with the Mets.

• According to CBSSports.com, the D-backs are looking into a trade with Toronto for catcher Dioner Navarro, who lost his starting spot with the Blue Jays this offseason when they signed Russell Martin. Navarro, who will become a free agent after the 2015 season, posted a .274/.317/.395 slash line last year.

• The Rockies have apparently inquired about free-agent right-hander Ryan Vogelsong. In 30 2/3 career innings at Coors Field, Vogelsong has a 7.92 ERA.

• In an effort to find a replacement for Nick Markakis, the Orioles have reportedly asked Arizona about outfielders David Peralta and Ender Inciarte. Arizona has the room to move an outfielder, and a FOX Sports report claims the D-backs could be looking for a starting pitcher or a catcher (see above) in return.

• Oakland's Jesse Chavez, Baltimore's Tommy Hunter and the White Sox's Dayan Viciedo all avoided arbitration on Monday by coming to terms with their clubs.

by Anonymousreply 26January 24, 2015 4:30 AM

Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.

Papelbon is a toxic teammate and never was accepted by fans. It didn't help that during his first Home Opener, when the team walks into the stadium, he complained it ahouldnt be done because the terrorists could attack and "Obama wants to take away all of our guns."

He was rude to the fans and contaminated the clubhouse.

Now I will say rationally it doesn't make sense to keep him because our team isn't good enough to have use for a closer.

Beyond thinking he was a jerk, I never enjoyed watching him. No charisma.

A-Rod issues hand-written letter of apology to fans

MLB.com | 1:00 PM ET

Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez, who served a season-long suspension in 2014 for his involvement with Biogenesis and performance-enhancing drugs, issued a hand-written letter of apology today.

To the Fans,

I take full responsibility for the mistakes that led to my suspension for the 2014 season. I regret that my actions made the situation worse than it needed to be. To Major League Baseball, the Yankees, the Steinbrenner family, the Players Association and you, the fans, I can only say I'm sorry.

I accept the fact that many of you will not believe my apology or anything that I say at this point. I understand why and that's on me. It was gracious of the Yankees to offer me the use of Yankee Stadium for this apology, but I decided that next time I am in Yankee Stadium, I should be in pinstripes doing my job.

I served the longest suspension in the history of the league for PED use. The Commissioner has said the matter is over. The Players Association has said the same. The Yankees have said the next step is to play baseball.

I'm ready to put this chapter behind me and play some ball.

This game has been my single biggest passion since I was a teenager. When I go to Spring Training, I will do everything I can to be the best player and teammate possible, earn a spot on the Yankees and help us win.

Sincerely,

Alex

Daulton cancer-free after two-year battle

Former Phillies All-Star catcher was diagnosed with glioblastoma in 2013

By Todd Zolecki, MLB.com | 2:14 PM ET

CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Darren Daulton looked and sounded like himself Sunday morning at Bright House Field.

He looked tan. He smiled easily. He spoke optimistically about the future.

Daulton, who led the 1993 Phillies to the National League pennant, announced recently he is cancer free after battling glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer, since 2013.

"I feel good," he said. "I don't know how lucky we are, but it's pretty cool."

Daulton has an open invitation to be an instructor at Spring Training as his health permits. It did not sound like he was ready for that, but he was happy Sunday to be at the ballpark on a warm sunny day, watching the Phillies prepare for a new season.

"Is there any way I can get a three-year contract right now, with big money?" he joked.

Daulton said he got the good news Friday, when he visited his doctor. His doctor smiled when he came through the door.

That is when he knew he was cancer-free.

"I still have problems talking," said Daulton, who had been working on TV and radio in Philadelphia prior to the diagnosis. "So I can't go on the air like I used to. If I get tired, then I have problems. But I feel good. Just every now and then, I have problems, 'What were we just talking about?'

"I've been hanging out with a lot of people from Philadelphia that have similar problems. It just happens, and it happens to different people. I just try to say the right things. There have been a couple that have passed away. It would be nice if everybody didn't have to deal with this cancer situation."

Daulton dealt with it and he beat it. He is one of the fortunate ones.

I respect him for being open about his battles with addiction and I do pull for him because of he seems earnest in his attempts to live a sober life. But there are relapses every other year or so - the ones that we know about.

Still - respect to him for fessing up to MLB about it. No failed test according to the Deadspin story and he'll be entered in to another recovery program.

Whatever!

Pittsburgh Pirates: picture of militant in team's hat 'absolutely sickening'

- Sky News published first photo of 27-year-old obtained from school records

- UK man behind Isis beheadings identified Wednesday as Mohammed Emwazi

Guardian sport, Friday 27 February 2015 21.59 GMT

The Pittsburgh Pirates released a strongly worded statement distancing themselves from the Islamic State after a photo surfaced of Mohammed Emwazi – the knife-wielding militant known as ‘Jihadi John’ – wearing a cap with the team’s insignia.

Sky News published a photo on Friday of Emwazi obtained from University of Westminster student records in which the 26-year-old is wearing a Pirates hat.

“It is absolutely sickening to everyone within the Pirates organization, and to our great fans, to see this murderer wearing a Pirates cap in this old photo,” the team said in a statement issued from their spring training camp in Bradenton, Florida.

“The classic gold P stands for Pittsburgh and is worn by our players, coaches and fans with a great sense of pride.”

The Guardian confirmed Thursday that Emwazi was Jihadi John, the masked man who has beheaded several Western hostages disseminated in a series of gruesome videos widely disemminated online.

The name was first published Thursday morning by the Washington Post.

A-Roid vs. Phillies

by Anonymousreply 55March 4, 2015 5:03 PM

I hope the switch-pitcher Pat Venditte makes the A's roster this year.

This is such a curiosity to me that I had to look up the rule on pitchers switching sides. Turns out the 'rule' is named for him since he was responsible for the drafting of it in 2008.

According to the Venditte Guidelines:

• The pitcher must visually indicate to the umpire, batter and runner(s) which way he will begin pitching to the batter. Engaging the rubber with the glove on a particular hand is considered a definitive commitment to which arm he will throw with. The batter will then choose which side of the plate he will bat from.

• The pitcher must throw one pitch to the batter before any "switch" by either player is allowed.

• After one pitch is thrown, the pitcher and batter may each change positions one time per at-bat. For example, if the pitcher changes from right-handed to left-handed and the batter then changes batter's boxes, each player must remain that way for the duration of that at-bat (unless the offensive team substitutes a pinch hitter, and then each player may again "switch" one time).

• Any switch (by either the pitcher or the batter) must be clearly indicated to the umpire.

• There will be no warm-up pitches during the change of arms.

• If an injury occurs the pitcher may change arms but not use that arm again during the remainder of the game.

Fascinating.

It looks like the only other case of a switch-pitcher taking the mound in major league games happened WAAAY back in the 1880s. I can't believe that it's been well over than a century since this phenomenon has been encountered.

Lots of pitchers starting the season on the DL/out for the season. Yu Darvish, Zack Wheeler, Cliff Lee. Wonder if the Phillies are still interested in dealing for Cole Hamels since Cliffy "The Yankees fans are mean" Lee is pretty much done for. So glad my Yankees didn't go after Lee.

I'm not interested in Hamels either, tbh. He was a pretty good pitcher until he made those Holiday Inn Express commercials. It's been downhill ever since.

r67, Speaking of Yankee fans, who's gonna watch Opening Day at the Stadium just to see the crowd reaction to A-Rod? My prediction is that the cheers will outnumber the boos, considering how forgiving fans have been during spring training games.

R69, Tanaka or CC for Opening Day? Girardi seems undecided at this point.

by Anonymousreply 70March 18, 2015 6:37 PM

R69, after yesterday's ST game vs the Mets, I hope Tanaka gets the start. CC gave up all 4 runs. I've never seen Matt Harvey pitch before; he pretty much kept my Yanks off the bases.

On the same day we get the news that the arbitrator decided MLB and the Angels cannot sanction Josh Hamilton for his self-admitted drug policy violation, yet another player is exposed as getting a big contract with the aid of steroids.

The Twins gave Ervin Santana a 4-year, $55M contract over the winter. But now he'll start the season on an 80-game (that's a recent change from the 50-game 1st offense) suspension for a failed drug test.

According to the story the info on when the failing sample was collected (spring training? offseason?) hasn't been made public. But a cynic like me tends to believe that whatever his 'program' is, it was likely going on last season when he had a pretty good year with the Braves and knew he was looking for a contract with a new team.

Melky Cabrera will be proud!

Billy Bean was on with Thomas Roberts this week to talk about his Ambassador for Inclusion role and the visits he made to several of the squads' spring training camps. Some of those have been mentioned in the thread already.

He talks about how A's pitcher Sean Doolittle's girlfriend (who has 2 moms) offered to buy the tickets that season ticket holders announced they want to unload rather than attend the planned LGBT night this summer. I like how she did it without slandering those ticket holders or coming across like a dick in any way.

Personally I'm glad Bean is working in baseball again instead of selling real estate in Miami.

Not that the Twins were probably going to be a contender this year, but thanks Irvin Santana for starting your 4 year contract with an 80 game steroid suspension. And thanks for showing your class by giving the usual "I don't know how it got in my system" denial.

by Anonymousreply 81April 4, 2015 3:05 PM

r81, maybe someone injected him with steroids while he was sleeping!

by Anonymousreply 82April 4, 2015 3:10 PM

If you are a fan r81, I feel for you.

Cheating stinks no matter what. But I feel worse about a smaller market team like the Twins losing a player after opening their wallets to get him and improve their team than I do for a situation like A-Roid and the Yanks.

The Yankees can deal will an overpaid player sitting out for a stretch. The Twins invested a good portion of their limited salary on Santana and are now stuck.

My Tigers looked A-MAZING today!!! Loving the new additions. And Avila got off to a great start--here's hoping my fave player has a great "comeback" season.

Yeah, it was only against Minnesota! but I'll take it.

And for those who watched on MLA Network, how much fun was J.K. Simmons having at the game? He was so giddy.

I think it's interesting when they talk about a team going back to Montreal.

Yes people showed up for the recent Jays preseason games, but only 10 years ago the crowds that showed up for Expos games occasionally numbered in the 3000 and 4000 range.

If a community can't show up in significant enough force to show support, regardless of their team's winning/losing record, then why would it be different if another squad relocated there?

This article mentions the Rays and As as the teams that might want to move. I'm pretty sure the As aren't going anywhere but that they will hint at it until they get a new stadium.

Similar to the possibility of the Raiders and Chargers moving to L.A. to share a stadium. Hasn't L.A. sufficiently demonstrated in the past that they don't have the fan loyalty to compare to that of other cities?

I'm watching the Padres at Dodgers.

Longtime Dodger Matt Kemp got very loud cheers from the LA crowd when he was introduced as a Padre before the game. And they cheered him warmly again when he stepped to the plate for the first time with many in the crowd standing for him.

But then the crowd also let up a roar when he swung and missed at a Kershaw pitch.

Wish his first at-bat he eventually singled off Kershaw and got an RBI. And with that I'm sure the cheering for him is finished.

We'll see if Kimbrel is needed to close today, r87. He did make it to the stadium just before the start of the game.

Jeremy Affeldt from the Giants bullpen earned a post on the DL baseball thread a few years ago when he first joined the Giants.

I only remember it vaguely. It was about how he went to San Fransisco with some fear (for lack of a better word) about gay people. But he expressed regret for that once he realized how irrationally close-minded he had been.

Now he's expressing further evolution in his thinking by sending a message to his fellow Christians about their response to gay people.

[quote]Why do people who aren’t Christians hate us? They look at us and say, “You’re just a bunch of Bible thumpers who are homophobic and you don’t love anybody.

[quote]We’ve brought that on ourselves. I don’t think we’re showing the love of Jesus. Gay people are asking for equal rights under the law, and we’ve got Christians saying “God hates you.” I get so angry because that’s not true! God loves you! Jesus walks with the gay community! I think Jesus says, “I love you just as I love someone who is not gay. I love you as a human being. I just love you.

The timing suggests that this is in response to the religious freedom laws, although he doesn't reference them.

A completely different message than another Christian MLBer Torii Hunter gives.

R93, similar thing happened with Shane Victorino in his appearance against the Phillies today. When he was announced during the Red Sox's, the fans gave him a loud round of applause. At his first at bat, the crowd cheered loudly again with the majority giving him a standing ovation. Cole Hamels and Carlos ruiz purposely took their time getting ready so Victorino could have a chance to take it all in.

Phillies Concession Stand Offering Plastic Helmets For Fans To Vomit In

Sports News in Brief • Sports • Baseball • ISSUE 51•14 • Apr 9, 2015

PHILADELPHIA—Calling it a fun new way to enhance the game-day experience, the Philadelphia Phillies announced Thursday that concession stands at Citizens Bank Park will now sell plastic helmets for fans to vomit in. “We’re excited to let all Phillies fans know that, for just $12, they can throw up into an officially licensed novelty helmet modeled after the ones worn by their favorite players,” said team spokesperson Bonnie Clark, adding that the flattened crown of the 8-ounce plastic cap allows intoxicated fans to conveniently rest the helmet between their knees without spilling any vomit onto their lap. “They are dishwasher-safe, so you can always take them home, wash them out, and end up with a great souvenir from the ballgame. Of course, we also offer full-size plastic lids for those who find that the traditional miniature versions are simply not big enough for them, or for those who would rather buy a larger helmet to share with friends.” Clark added that the stadium has already corrected the shortage issues from Monday night’s game, when drunk fans were disappointed to find they could only buy styrofoam bowls to puke in after vendors ran out of the helmets during the fourth inning.

Watching the games at Wrigley has been a little odd so far this season.

It looks so weird on TV to have no people in the outfield sections.

When long balls fly into the stands, you usually see the crowd going nuts. Watching the homers land in tarped off sections almost feels like a Twilight Zone episode.

The fact that the ivy hasn't leafed yet adds to the weirdness factor.

It has been fun though to see Kris Bryant's debut series this weekend. So far he seems like great guy, really likeable, solid fielder (if you ignore his one gaff today), and good looking too. Haven't seen much of that hyped offense yet, but it'll come.

by Anonymousreply 107April 19, 2015 8:31 AM

You know it is a sign your team might not be having a stellar year when you need to talk about someone's facial hair for a story -- although the wholesome former catcher does look kind of hot with the style change. I also think he is going to have a bit of a bounce back year one year further from his concussion. On a superficial note, it is too bad with his big rump that the baseball pants are not as tight as the 80's...

Josh Hamilton is being traded back to the Rangers.

Stunner.

And 'traded' might not be the right word since the Angels aren't getting any player in return. Plus they are still paying the majority of what's left on his huge contract. That is money they'd have been out anyway since it's been sounding like they never wanted him back on the field again for LA.

I guess that limits the risk Texas is taking by bringing him back in the fold. They didn't give up a player and they only have to pay a small fraction of his salary.

So once he recoups from his surgery, I'm sure they hope to get a few good months out of him - since it's been decided he doesn't have to serve a suspension for his self-reported substance abuse.

Thought this was all a joke when I first read it. I'm still shocked.

by Anonymousreply 109April 25, 2015 3:35 AM

Not that Hamilton was a complete innocent and there were not reasons why LA would want to end the relationship, but the LA ownership etc. came across really vindictive and petty with their leaks and just their whole handling of the situation. Hopefully things will go better for him once back in Texas.

Wednesday's Orioles-White Sox game will begin at 2:05 p.m. ET and will be closed to the public.

This weekend's Orioles-Rays series has been relocated to Tropicana Field. The Orioles will play as the home team.

by Anonymousreply 115April 28, 2015 7:21 PM

What's the point of playing a baseball game that is closed to the public?

by Anonymousreply 116April 28, 2015 7:28 PM

R116,

All teams are required to play 162 games with each regular MLB season.

They have to get in the games.

And the reality of road traveling, for all teams, plays a role in the moods of clubs - so they play in shitty conditions (usually weather-related) in spite of seeming, to others, not necessary.

This is one more reason why MLB is inferior to the other three major professional sports so popular in the U.S.: football (NFL), basketball (NBA), and hockey (NHL).

by Anonymousreply 117April 28, 2015 9:00 PM

R117, oh, I understand that. But playing without an audience seems like something a team desperate to get its games in would do in September, not in April.

by Anonymousreply 118April 28, 2015 9:17 PM

by Anonymousreply 119April 29, 2015 4:28 PM

Good news r119. I'm very curious about how this Twilight Zone game will look.

No need for a 7th inning stretch, but I wonder if they'll still have a National Anthem before the start. Or is that tradition only done for the fans, not the players?

by Anonymousreply 120April 29, 2015 6:00 PM

BTW, you need an account to watch the game online.

by Anonymousreply 121April 29, 2015 6:15 PM

Chris Davis hits a 3-run homer in the first inning, and there is mostly silence.

You can hear some hands clapping over the broadcasters microphones, so the press box must be applauding.

And they have a camera showing some fans gathered outside the stadium gates cheering, but that's it.

Bizarre

About his head injury last night, Archie Bradley says he remembers his pitch headed to the plate, and the the next thing he knew he 'woke up' lying down on the ground.

Votto really does look good this season now that he dropped some lbs. I never thought looked overweight, but seeing him trim this spring makes it visibly obvious that he has some he could lose.

And the improvement in all of his offensive numbers shows so far this season. Hopefully that knee stays healthy and he can play a full season this year.

by Anonymousreply 126May 1, 2015 5:47 AM

I hope Votto has a good season. He gets a lot of the same criticism Mauer gets in Minnesota - not enough power, too high of contract etc. People don't appreciate what skills they do have, and never give them the benefit of the doubt when they have slumps - downplaying any injuries they might have (I think Mauer was still have concussion issues last year). I hope both he and Mauer have bounce-back seasons to silence their critics a bit.

by Anonymousreply 128May 1, 2015 3:27 PM

Like many baseballs fans, attending a game in each of the 30 MLB ballparks is one of those eventual goals that I have.

In the pregame for the Rockies/Padres game tonight they interviewed this guy that is riding a bicycle - not a motorcycle - across the country to see a game at each park this summer.

It's not just a bucket list-thing. He's doing it for charity and is giving donations to the local Boys&Girls Clubs in the various cities.

Boy, I'm kind of jealous. Sometimes I wish I didn't have to work for a living so I could do stuff like that. I'd love to take 6 months off to bike across the country and watch baseball games all summer.

According to his schedule he'll be hitting Phoenix later this month, so he'll likely avoid the hottest summer temps. But he said he has a stretch in late June/early July where he has 13-days to ride from St. Louis to Miami. He said he thinks that might be the worst stretch on his schedule. Even worse that riding from Phoenix to the Mile High City, which I would think is tough.

One month in the season and we have our first manager casualty.

The Brewers just canned Ron Roenicke. This was announced just after the Brewers won 2 games in a row for the first time this year to take a series (also for the first time this season) off the Cubbies.

Anybody interested in Ryan Braun?

Milwaukee has spread the word that they are open to trade offers now as they have essentially given up on 2015. Seems like a knee-jerk reaction to make that call the first week in May, but Milwaukee did just set a team record for worst ever first month of a season.

Roenicke's tenure wasn't all bad though. He was skipper during the recent years of success getting the team to the playoffs. And last year he had the Crew on top of the division for nearly the entire season until a collapse the final 6 weeks left them out of the postseason.

And apparently whatever caused the poor finish has carried over into this spring, and Ron couldn't figure out how to steady the ship.

Oh well.

Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the Brewers are hiring Craig Counsell (he of the former goofy "reach for the sky" batting stance) to replace Ron Roenicke.

A Milwaukee-area native, Counsell was a Brewer when he retired in 2012 and has been on the payroll as a special assistant (or some similar front office title) since then.

He's a novice to coaching a big league team though so it might be a gamble. He did interview with the Rays to replace Maddon, but he pulled himself out of contention before they made a decision.

Hopefully this works out as well as Brad Ausmus taking his first coaching job as the manager in Detroit.

A slew of high profile pitchers in the news this week regarding their ailments.

Strasburg coming out of the game yesterday with a 'shoulder' issue, according to his manager.

Also yesterday former Blue Jays/current Padres starter Brandon Morrow was sidelined with shoulder inflammation.

And the Rays hoped Alex Cobb would become available soon, but instead they learned yesterday that he has a torn elbow ligament too.

Brandon McCarthy just had Tommy John surgery this week.

Seems like they still can't figure out for sure what is wrong with Verlander as he's seeing another specialist and getting a 3rd opinion.

And unrelated to arm/shoulder problems, Adam Wainwright popped his Achilles tendon last week ending his season.

There might be more, but those are the ones that come to mind that have all been in the news the past week or so.

The normally level-headed Joey Votto absolutely lost his shit today.

Votto threw his helmet in frustration after a strike out. That will often bring an ejection, but Joey walked away not realizing he'd gotten the hook.

When he finally did realize that he'd been ejected, he went back at the ump to give him a piece of his mind. Unfortunately he got carried away and came in to physical contact with the guy.

Cole Hamels pranked reporters into thinking he was traded by emptying out his locker

By Chris Landers

Cole Hamels is on the trade block. He knows it, the Phillies know it, and reporters have been circling for months to get the scoop on where the lefty's headed. And then, after Thursday's game with the Orioles, it looked like the big break had finally come:

jon johnson @jonjohnsonwip Cole Hamels locker is empty. 3:55 PM - 18 Jun 2015

Phillies reporters say Cole Hamels' locker has been cleaned out. No nameplate. Was supposedly scratched from Fri's start w hamstring injury - Dan Connolly (@danconnollysun) June 18, 2015

In the frantic moments afterward, everyone rushed to make sense of this breaking development: Where would Hamels be playing? What did the Phillies get in return? How would the Phanatic handle the news?!

Except, well, it turns out that Cole Hamels just delights in trolling us all/cruelly upsetting furry green things -- he had emptied his locker just as a gag, to poke a little fun at all the rumors swirling around and remind everyone that, hey, he's still a member of a baseball team.

Seriously, though, would a heads up to the mascot have really killed you?

Mike Trout is good at baseball.

I am probably being cynical, and it could be that he had a healthy off-season for the first time in awhile, but I wonder if Pujols career bounce is all natural? He has not played like this in years. This probably is not fair to him, but I did use to wonder if he was on anything back in the day.

by Anonymousreply 167July 15, 2015 1:18 AM

Much of today's Phillies vs. Marlins pre-game talk was about if the Phillies decided to trade Cole Hamels (and it looks like a foregone conclusion). It will be a shame if the team does trade him. Hamels is a good pitcher but has terrible support behind him and who knows what kind of pitcher the Phillies will get in exchange (and again, will they have the same problems with run support). Hamels is also very popular with the fans. Can't help wondering if that will have an effect on the fan support.

by Anonymousreply 168July 19, 2015 6:06 PM

R167, for Pujols it might the competition of playing with a teammate like Trout. People are talking about him and Pujols less; that could be enough to spur Pujols back to what he was before he hit LA. I think the same could be said for ARod. He's out of Jeter's shadow now and he's got guys like Teixiera(sp) suddenly tearing it up. Just my opinion.

I watched this latest 3-game series of the Yanks vs. Mariners. Cano looks a LOT smaller than he was when he was wearing NYY pinstripes. The story reported on Saturday, I think , was that he had a parasite and had to take some strong antibiotics to get rid of it. The antibiotics have given him severe GERD which sometimes makes it difficult for him to eat much food. Sometimes he can't even keep water/Gatorade down because of the acid reflux.

And will Hamels BE a Cub by the end of next week, Phillie Phan??? That's the latest speculation I read.

by Anonymousreply 175July 26, 2015 4:06 AM

Johnny Cueto going to the Royals is an OK move. Good for KC to shore up their pitching squad.

I'm hoping for something "bigger" to happen this week. Big name trades are always a little exciting to me.

by Anonymousreply 176July 27, 2015 4:29 PM

Tulo to the BJs??!! Seriously? He's going to be on another team that's not going anywhere. Their starting pitching really sucks. Dickey is a now a north-of-the-border joke. He should have stayed with the Mets.

On the other hand, my Yankees are blowing it UP in the AL East. Buck Showalter is not having fun this year.

Rangers nearing deal for Phillies' LHP Cole Hamels, MLB.com's TR Sullivan reports. Clubs have not confirmed.

by Anonymousreply 179July 30, 2015 2:39 AM

Papelbon has (had) a nice ass.

by Anonymousreply 180July 30, 2015 2:50 AM

Rangers are giving up too much and Hamels' elbow won't last through spring training because the Rangers are cursed by Satan.

by Anonymousreply 181July 30, 2015 2:54 AM

Rangers to get LHPs Cole Hamels, Jake Diekman, cash from Phillies for LHP Matt Harrison, 5 prospects. Clubs haven't confirmed.

by Anonymousreply 182July 30, 2015 3:09 AM

What about the Dodgers 3-team trade to get Mike Morse and Mat Latos (who will never be what he was for the Reds) from the Marlins? I just read the details of the proposal and I was confused. I'll have to take a closer look... if it actually plays out.

by Anonymousreply 183July 30, 2015 3:28 AM

Mets had a major fuck up tonight. Supposedly Flores and Wheeler were traded, and yet Collins, the manager, had him play even though he didn't know whether the trade had occurred. Flores cries openly. The deal didn't actually go through.

by Anonymousreply 184July 30, 2015 3:32 AM

Poor Flores, that was awful, he shouldn't have been left in the game. It's not like it was a close one. Mets = no class.

by Anonymousreply 185July 30, 2015 10:30 AM

Being a fan of the Mets or not, you couldn't help but feeling bad for the guy.

Does this Mets fiasco have anything to do with Anthony Recker's ass?

by Anonymousreply 187July 30, 2015 2:47 PM

My home team, Detroit Tigers, now in "reboot" mode, dealt 2012 American League Cy Young winner David Price, 29, to Toronto Blue Jays on July 30.

I was fortunate to have seen Price pitch, in a Tigers uniform, at Detroit's Comerica Park on July 18.

Toronto just got shortstop Troy Tulowitzki from Colorado Rockies. So, that team is pushing in a big way. (Second place in the AL East is tight.)

by Anonymousreply 188July 31, 2015 7:57 AM

Someone did start a separate thread for this story, but I'm adding it here to the baseball thread.

One of the Brewers prospects in their farm system has come out publicly to a reporter for the Milwaukee newspaper. He may be one of the multitude that never get called up to the big leagues, but even if that's the case, the slow trickle of guys coming out in the farm teams means that eventually one of the will get his shot.

In the article he speaks to how his performance has improved since he made the decision to come out to his family, friends and teammates. He was named MVP of the Pioneer League All Star game this month thanks to his pinch hit homer.

by Anonymousreply 192August 20, 2015 12:54 AM

Ryan Braun actually said...

[quote]I've never met him, but I hope baseball as a whole is at a point where we judge people by their ability and not their race, religion, ethnicity or sexuality. I can't speak for everybody on our team, but he would be accepted and supported by me. And I would hope all of my teammates feel the same way

Somebody bumped the lame baseball thread. I didn't realize it and accidentally added this there at first.

This is the non-news of the day. Somehow an econ professor got a story in the New York Times for saying that statistically there are some closeted (not publicly out) gay players in MLB. Duh! How does that make the news?

Agree with you, R195. I'm a Yankees fan but I do tip my cap to their amazing season and continued hold on 1st place in the AL East. Sincerely hoping my Yanks can take the 3 of 4 from TOR but that might be a tall order.

Did anyone see Joey Votto's hissyfit?

by Anonymousreply 198September 10, 2015 9:51 PM

My Yankees finally pulled out a win vs those annoying BJs! Yesterday's game felt like the one-game play in for the WC team to advance to the playoffs. ARod's bolt from 3rd and head first slide Home was quite enjoyable.

by Anonymousreply 199September 14, 2015 2:37 PM

Astros are imploding!! Rangers killed Dallas Kuechel last night.

by Anonymousreply 200September 17, 2015 1:06 PM

It might be a bit early to say if the Twins are imploding, but they are coming back to earth a bit which they cannot afford to do if they want the second wild card spot. Although if the Astros have an epic implode, they might be able to back into it if they can stay ahead of the Angels and Indians.

Still, even if they don't get the wildcard- it was a much better season than most predicted. They are still relevant the second half of September have a lot of potential for next year and they haven't been this fun to watch in 5 years.

by Anonymousreply 201September 17, 2015 1:49 PM

Yankees vs Mets 3-game series starts tonight. I will have to be seriously buzzed to listen to ESPN talking heads on Sunday night. I'm hoping the basement dwelling teams play spoiler versus the Blue Jays. The rest of the regular season is going to be exciting!!

For some inexplicable reason, I'm rooting for the Pirates. They've become my favorite NL team.

by Anonymousreply 202September 18, 2015 5:45 PM

^ I'm from Da Burgh so I'm rooting for the Pirates, too

by Anonymousreply 203September 18, 2015 7:15 PM

Congrats R203, to your Buckos!! If they weren't in the same division as STL, you guys might not have to play the one game play in.

Tough loss for my Yanks last night. Was hoping Russell Martin would fondly remember his time with us but I guess not. :-(

Oooooh, R212! Foreplay in front of the cameras? HAWT!

What the hell has happened to the Houston Astros?? I thought my Yankees were bad losing a 7 game lead in the AL East but at least we still have a WC berth possibility with 2 wins. Houston, right now at least, has fallen out of the 2nd WC berth as well.

Cardinals Rookies Stroll Through Airport In Their Speedos To The Delight Of Travelers

Major League Baseball’s regular season is quickly drawing to a close and that means we have officially entered the ‘end-of-season’ hazing period, a time when rookies are forced to dress in ridiculous outfits and make public appearances prior to the final series of the season.

Cardinals pitcher Carlos Martinez kindly shared a picture of the team’s rookies boarding their plane in Speedos:

CC Sabathia heads to rehab for alcohol abuse on the eve of the one game Wild Card play-in game. I wonder if the suddenness is sue to some other story that may be about to break.

Aside from this, with the way the Yankees have been playing recently, I don' t have a whole lot of faith that they will make it too far this year.

by Anonymousreply 217October 6, 2015 9:26 AM

R217, I don't know but, as I've said to my friends, I don't think there's anything ominous about the timing. In Dec 2014, he had a "dust up" because he and his travelling companions missed their flight to Jamaica and weren't allowed to board. I'm guessing the party was at the bar and having a good time. He also had that altercation in Toronto outside a bar. His family got him out of there and the brawl occurred AFTER he left. I just chalked it up to TOR being in first place and drunk fans.

I'm guessing he discussed his issues with his family and made the agreement with them to go at the end of the regular season. The Yanks were awful and it didn't look like we'd make the WC so it made sense to go then. Who knew we'd make it? At one point, we were third behind TOR and BAL. I hope he gets the help he needs and comes back even stronger. He gives back to his community and does quite a bit of goodwill around the country. Kids look up to him. There's an article online from USA that reports the man has no enemies is extremely well-liked.

Here's hoping my Yanks can get to Keuchel tonight and the Pirates to Arrietta tomorrow!

by Anonymousreply 218October 6, 2015 1:03 PM

My Yanks couldn't get anything going yesterday vs HOU. To be honest, we've not been hitting since Teixera went down. Ellsbury was banged up and Gardner couldn't hit the broad side of a barn.

Good luck tonight to the Pirates!!

by Anonymousreply 219October 7, 2015 4:31 PM

I hate the Skankies. Jacoby Ellsbury is hot, though

by Anonymousreply 220October 7, 2015 11:49 PM

Man, home field advantage meant nothing in the Wild Card games! My beloved Yankees and my favorite NL team, the Pirates, both got shut out. Oh well, as long as the Blue Jays don't win the WS, I'll be a happy camper.

by Anonymousreply 221October 8, 2015 6:10 PM

Utley serving a 2 game suspension for late slide that broke Reuben Tejada's fibia. Hope the Rangers can end the Blue Jays' trip to the post season.

I want to be pleased for the postseason success of Daniel Murphy, but I find it challenging since I can't approve of his lifestyle.

I disagree with his lifestyle.” “I do disagree with the fact that Daniel is a heterosexual. That doesn’t mean I can’t still invest in him and get to know him. I don’t think the fact that someone is a heterosexual should completely shut the door on investing in them in a relational aspect. Getting to know him. That, I would say, you can still accept them but I do disagree with the lifestyle, 100 percent.”

by Anonymousreply 223October 19, 2015 8:01 PM

Jacoby Ellsbury is DL cuntress Julianna Margulies in drag. Discuss.

by Anonymousreply 227October 21, 2015 6:38 AM

Yes METS and Royals. Go Royals!!!!!!!

by Anonymousreply 228October 21, 2015 7:01 AM

This could be a fun night since both pennants could be wrapped up. But I wouldn't mind if both series had to go to a Game 6.

by Anonymousreply 229October 21, 2015 7:05 PM

I didn't see any of the Mets-Cubs games. How could the Cubs bats dry up so much?

by Anonymousreply 230October 22, 2015 8:49 AM

Poor Cubbies what a disappointment.
