George Michael

What do you think he thinks of the fact that long after he's dead, the only song of his that is played consistently is that Christmas song, not "I Want Your Sex", "Everything She Wants", etc.?

BTW, I love this song, but every year they play it again, and every year it takes forever and a day to get out of my head.

by Anonymousreply 85February 2, 2021 6:10 PM

What a stupid thing to say.

EVERY fucking songwriter would love to have a song that gets played every Christmas. It's guaranteed income for the rest of your life.

A significant portion of Mooriah's income has come from her Christmas song.

by Anonymousreply 1December 20, 2014 7:51 PM

BTW: Where is George Michael and HOW is George Michael? I love him. I hope he's getting better. He had seizures after he fell out of that car. Then, he had a car accident and was airlifted away. I couldn't bear it if he died. This was ages ago.

Yes, call me MARY! but I don't give a fuck what you think. Do people realize what an absolute gift he is? We lost Freddie Mercury, but we can't lose George. There is no one left who's as talented and as beautiful.

by Anonymousreply 2December 20, 2014 7:58 PM

r1, I'm not talking about the financial aspect. After all, he's not going to get any of that money years after he's gone. The point is more about his artistic legacy long after his death.

SHEESH!!

by Anonymousreply 3December 20, 2014 8:09 PM

George Michael is drug ridden and has AIDS. How do YOU think he is. Even sleeping on his pile of money didn't change that.

by Anonymousreply 4December 20, 2014 8:44 PM

OP, I too recall how incredibly talented he was, and how fashion-forward and creative were his videos, especially from his solo career. He definitely should be more appreciated today. Sadly, his personal life really overwhelmed his career.

I hate to say it, but like Whitney Houston or even Joan Rivers, his remaining chance at respect and renewed popularity may be his death.

by Anonymousreply 5December 20, 2014 8:51 PM

Straw man argument/attack

by Anonymousreply 6December 20, 2014 9:02 PM

SHUT YOUR MOUTH

by Anonymousreply 7December 20, 2014 9:05 PM

How do you know he has AIDS? How do you know he is even HIV Positive? I would think if this were so, we'd know. There would've been a lot of public discussion. Not just the rumor mill on DL.

How do you know he's a drug addict? I know he did drugs in the past, but he's allegedly clean now for years. I also recall that he lost a loved one years ago to AIDS and drugs and it hit him very hard.

After his hospitalization and near death from pneumonia during his tour,I had a sense that he was much different. He's said many times he hated touring and the public part of his life, so maybe he just decided to become a less public person. My worry is that he is unwell, and it has nothing to do with whether or not he is Positive.

by Anonymousreply 8December 20, 2014 9:20 PM

All the years of drug use caught up with him, drugs like coke is very damaging to your heart.

Who knows what else he was into?

If you guys are doing drugs, quit.

by Anonymousreply 9December 20, 2014 9:30 PM

You can tell he has AIDS the same way you can tell NPH is a homosexual. They look the part and act it.

by Anonymousreply 10December 20, 2014 9:33 PM

I thought the bout with pneumonia might have changed him but not long afterward he fell out of a car speeding down a motorway. No explanations ever given. He' s disappeared from the public eye since that event, no public statements, no public appearances, nothing.

Hard to believe he's in goo d condition with the way he's acting. And then there's the Tresure Island Media pornstar he hangs with. He's probanbly poz, not that it's much of a concern what with modern medicine and mountains of money.

by Anonymousreply 11December 20, 2014 9:38 PM

"There is no one left who's as talented and as beautiful."

I beg to differ.

by Anonymousreply 12December 20, 2014 9:39 PM

He should do a remake of that song. A duet with Gloria Estefan in Spanish would be great.

by Anonymousreply 13December 20, 2014 9:47 PM

I'm willing to bet that he also still makes quite a bit of money off of:

Careless Whisper, One More Try, and Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go,

They're still played regularly, I think.

by Anonymousreply 14December 20, 2014 10:01 PM

I'm struggling to understand OP's point.

There are plenty of Wham/George Michael songs that get played on oldies stations and get used in movies. His music is as much in today's consciousness as many of his peers.

If he dies tomorrow, "Last Christmas" will not be the first (or only) song mentioned in the first paragraph.

As R1 said, it's a Christmas song. Popular Christmas songs get played every year. That's how the world works. If you're lucky enough to have written or recorded a popular Christmas song, it has probably made you a shitload of money over the years. I don't think GM feels bad when he cashes his royalty checks every year for the song.

Actually, when you think about it, George Michael is lucky he's still remembered, considering the career he's had. He personally has made numerous terrible career decisions, yet he's always bounced back. He also doesn't try all that hard, when you consider he's only put out one studio album in the entire 21st century and has only toured the U.S. once since 1991.

by Anonymousreply 15December 20, 2014 10:03 PM

How the Hell do you fall out of a car?

by Anonymousreply 16December 20, 2014 10:04 PM

George is a lovely man, with a kind heart. He sang for free for nurses in London.

I hope he has many good years ahead. He can pull out of this funk he's gotten into, I'm sure.

by Anonymousreply 17December 20, 2014 10:06 PM

He's really very talented but has not produced anything of note since 2002 or so, which is when his drug problems seem to have started. I really wish he would get back to form but I think it's too much to hope for at this point.

by Anonymousreply 18December 20, 2014 10:12 PM

He's probably hooked on pills now.

by Anonymousreply 19December 20, 2014 10:15 PM

R18, that's unfortunate. With people like James Blake, Sam Smith and Daley becoming more popular, there could be renewed interest in his brand of blue-eyed soul.

by Anonymousreply 20December 20, 2014 10:17 PM

I'm with R15. For a guy who only releases an album every few years he has had several memorable songs. Freedom, I want your sex, Careless Whisper and Faith are still played and that's just his solo stuff. Some TV music channel played Faith just the other day in one of those "Greatest pop songs of all time" lists. He's not the best looking guy and he pretty much phoned in his career but he's recorded some stuff that just keeps getting airplay.

I don't know if he'll ever record or tour again considering he seems to have a drug problem (unless he's cleaned up his act since he fell out out of a moving car last year) but he needn't worry that after he dies "last christmas" will be his entire legacy.

by Anonymousreply 21December 20, 2014 10:18 PM

These Queens. Lord.

by Anonymousreply 22December 20, 2014 10:39 PM

How old is he now? Early 60s?

by Anonymousreply 23December 20, 2014 10:40 PM

Thriller gets played every Halloweem. I wonder why Michael Jackson never wrote a Christmas song?

by Anonymousreply 24December 20, 2014 10:45 PM

Sorry no one agrees with your dull, uniformed opinion, OP.

by Anonymousreply 25December 20, 2014 11:00 PM

R13: why would he do the song in Spanish? George Michael is Greek.

by Anonymousreply 26December 20, 2014 11:07 PM

r23, he's 51 now.

by Anonymousreply 27December 20, 2014 11:30 PM

I think he seems older than he is because he started balding early and looked ridiculous in the 90s trying to hide it. I like to call that time his Ming the Merciless phase.

by Anonymousreply 28December 20, 2014 11:47 PM

Fuck off, OP - Andrew needs the royalties, and I don't want to be doing "Venus" into my 60s, you know.

by Anonymousreply 29December 21, 2014 12:12 AM

Michael Jackson was a Jehovah's Witness and he did not celebrate Christmas. Maybe he did behind closed doors, but he would never have cut a Christmas song.

My cousin married one of those Jehovah's Witnesses and he was an asshole who wouldn't even let me give her kids birthday gifts. They can't celebrate their birthdays either. I guess they all just sit around waiting for the end of the world.

by Anonymousreply 30December 21, 2014 12:21 AM

George Michael was a passenger in the car and was leaning against the door. The door wasn't shut properly, and as they rounded a curve he fell out and hit his head. They weren't speeding as I recall. It wasn't some random joyride.

I just think it's odd there are no sightings of him around. Not even going to the store, or riding in a car somewhere. Where does he live? It makes me wonder if he is even able to walk.

I'm sorry, but I feel bad he is having such a hard time ever since the pneumonia. And his last tour was wonderful. I completely disagree with whoever said he hasn't done anything since 2002.He has an amazing voice.

by Anonymousreply 31December 21, 2014 12:26 AM

Agree with you R31. I would LOVE to see him if he ever toured in the US. I think he's amazingly talented and I wish he would make some new music. Maybe that's what he's doing--getting back into fighting form physically, mentally and spiritually, and writing again. That would be awesome.

Considering all the old rockers still making the rounds in their 70's, George has a lot of years left for a comeback.

by Anonymousreply 32December 21, 2014 12:44 AM

I hope he does too. I love so much of his music. I loved the George Michael related plot on Eli Stone. God I loved that show.

by Anonymousreply 33December 21, 2014 12:53 AM

OP, who cares what he thinks. My family thanks Christmas every year.

by Anonymousreply 34December 21, 2014 4:09 AM

Andrew Ridgeley today:

by Anonymousreply 35January 2, 2015 1:11 PM

Boy George and Jimmy Somerville have bounced back in 2014, with new concerts and they did a duet together. It would be nice if George Michael was able to do likewise, or is his career more or less over, by his own choice. But then look how Bowie came back a decade or two later ....Sometimes an artist just needs a long break from it all before they have something new to say.

by Anonymousreply 36January 2, 2015 1:24 PM

I still think the Shep Pettibone remix and the concert set video are the best things GM has ever done. Does anyone here remember when he won best R&B record at the 1988 American Music Awards and Gladys Knight was caught by the cameras shaking her head in disbelief?

by Anonymousreply 37January 2, 2015 1:37 PM

George lives in Highgate, North London, R31. He lives very near to Kate Moss. Here's a photo of them walking in that neighborhood.

It's not really likely that he's there much as he has evaded the paparazzi, who are all over that part of London due to its celebrity inhabitants. My theory is he's in rehab somewhere. That or he's a virtual recluse.

Andrew is a hot daddy now. His partner Keren from Bananarama is still stunning.

by Anonymousreply 40January 2, 2015 2:19 PM

It's January 25, 2015.

Does anyone know what George Michael is doing right now? Does he live in the U.S.?

by Anonymousreply 41January 26, 2015 1:13 AM

Total radio silence. In 1986 I would never have believed that Richard Simmons's disappearance might someday be getting more media attention than George Michael's.

by Anonymousreply 42January 27, 2015 3:21 AM

R31 what was he a passenger in a '63 Rambler? What kind of car can do u fall out of if you lean against the door these days? My car doesn't stop beeping and flashing if all door aren't closed and all seat belts are buckled. And the doors lock when the car is shifted into drive. And I don't drive cars that George is accustomed to driving in, seems he's always in a Rover, whether driving or a passenger. BS story.

by Anonymousreply 43January 27, 2015 1:03 PM

George Michael is probably keeping a low profile these days. It is no longer the Eighties.

by Anonymousreply 44January 27, 2015 1:58 PM

I am a huge fan and love his music and his sexy look around the time of "Older". I hope he is OK and will release some new music. He's been through hell and back.

by Anonymousreply 45January 28, 2015 4:47 AM

OP, with all due respect, you don't know what you're talking about.

Freedom 90 is one of the most perfect pop songs of the past three decades.

Also, I think I Want Your Sex will be remembered as one of the songs that broke the social "hyman" regarding brazen sexuality in top 40 music.

by Anonymousreply 46January 28, 2015 5:24 AM

I'm listening to a CD of GM right now. What a beautiful voice. I wish he would release new material.

And he looks darn hot with the graying hair and goatee. He looks sizzling as a silver daddy!

by Anonymousreply 47January 28, 2015 5:57 AM

His version of "I Can't Make You Love Me" is just beautiful. Again, I don't understand why he no longer puts out new material. Or tour the USA.

by Anonymousreply 48January 28, 2015 5:59 AM

[quote]George Michael is probably keeping a low profile these days. It is no longer the Eighties.

In Europe, he's still a celebrity and a regular target for the paparazzi. Which is why it's odd that he hasn't been seen in public in months. No word from his "people" on where he is, either.

The cops interviewing Richard Simmons about his well-being, didn't realize that George Michael is living with him and was hiding in an upstairs bedroom during that interview.

by Anonymousreply 53January 28, 2015 4:36 PM

The problem is George Michael's music never evolved.

His latest album sounds the same as the ones from the 80s.

He's become an anachronism.

by Anonymousreply 54January 28, 2015 4:39 PM

R53 are you sure he wasn't in the closet?

by Anonymousreply 55January 28, 2015 5:45 PM

He was hiding in the closet in the upstairs bedroom.

by Anonymousreply 56January 28, 2015 5:52 PM

People will remember him more for bumping into Kevin Spacey on Hampstead Heath at 3:00 am.

by Anonymousreply 57January 28, 2015 5:56 PM

[quote]George Michael is probably keeping a low profile these days. It is no longer the Eighties.

Well, it's no longer the 60's or 70's either, but that doesn't stop us.

At least Andrew Ridgeley doesn't have to do the 1980's circuit with a bunch of washed up has beens. He is content with his life out of the public eye.

George Michael is just not seen out in public these days. He must be hurting from the breakup of the guy he was seeing for years.

by Anonymousreply 65January 28, 2015 11:35 PM

George Michael is busy putting the finishing touches to his special documentary film ‘Freedom’. He has discovered some incredible, unseen archive footage and is shooting additional interviews for the project so the film will now air in March 2017.

It promises to be a real treat for fans! To coincide with the film’s broadcast, George and Sony Music have decided to move the reissue of the Listen Without Prejudice album to the same time.

From a related thread "So does George Michael have a kid by this woman?"

The answer is almost certainly yes, the only thing missing is for the woman to confirm it, the relationship has already been confirmed by parts of his family and old-time friends.

by Anonymousreply 73January 31, 2021 12:46 PM

Or you could just look at him.... That´s confirmation enough.

by Anonymousreply 74January 31, 2021 12:50 PM

Or read what she says between the lines..

by Anonymousreply 75January 31, 2021 12:51 PM

R73 I read the opposite that family denies this woman has a son fathered by George. This was a few years ago so I thought at the time it's just another crazy fan obsessed with George making up this story. There had already been one unstable woman way back in the day who actually lived in George's house when he wasn't home. He was supposedly back and forth with authorities trying to get help for her. In the end she apparently started talking about Chapman which prompted George to tell the court the situation was intolerable.

I take these love child stories with a grain of salt unless it's confirmed by a court that a paternity test finally settled the issue. As generous as George was with his money to total strangers the question is why then does this woman claim he gave her "some" money for child support but nothing extraordinary.

Many of these posts a few years before George died are insightful. It's was clear to just about everyone that George was extremely self destructive. After Capote wrote "In Cold Blood," he proceeded to kill himself by slow suicide in the same path that George followed decades later. Something inside Capote just broke through the process of writing that book about two psychopath murderers. It seems the same for George that he was so damaged by something that it drove him to his death by the same means of drink, drugs & extreme promiscuity.

George needs a really serious biographer to research his life. The books currently on the market now are subpar. A few show that the authors didn't even bother to do basic fact checking. One element in this comes back on the public as far as I'm concerned. I've seen too many videos of audiences talking and screaming while George was singing one of the songs he wrote about loss. In the worst one the crowd acted like they were at a casino and actually laughing. This was while George was singing "You Have Been Loved." He actually stopped mid-way through and put his head down. A few people started clapping to cheer him on so he got it together and finished. He had photos showing on a screen in the background so this was his effort to connect with people where the universal feeling of pain is. I think it took a lot out of him anytime he had an experience like that. I listen to his music now and just think how comforting some of these songs are especially the way he sang them. He knew his music would live on, but I'm not sure he knew how much it would help people.

by Anonymousreply 76January 31, 2021 7:36 PM

If George were alive today, he'd be dead from Covid.

by Anonymousreply 77January 31, 2021 7:49 PM

R76 You write `As generous as George was with his money to total strangers the question is why then does this woman claim he gave her "some" money for child support but nothing extraordinary.´ The British tabloid press entirely made this, and a lot more, up years ago, and it holds no truth to it. The woman her self talks about it in the link R72. You also say it was denied but the family, this is the same thing, all made up by the tabloids at the same time several years ago. It has been confirmed several times in later years. About a DNA test, this also started by the same tabloids at the same time, this was apparently caused by them getting hold of a copy of such test, clearly proving George Michael being the father, but they were legally prevented from publishing it because of how they got hold of it.

The articles years ago was created lies to serve a purpose to the tabloid press, getting the woman to talk, we know this didn´t work, but the lies have since been proven to be nothing but lies, over and over. It´s time to put those created lies to rest.

Finally, the woman has given us her own words about what really is the truth, I suggest you read it, it´s the first time anyone of George Michaels family has done so and it´s a very interesting read.

by Anonymousreply 78January 31, 2021 11:28 PM

I believe it will be impossible to write a complete and truthfully biography about George Michael, I think there are very few, who know his life well enough, and they won't tell all, the same as George Michael himself, he didn´t let the world know more than a tiny slice of his life, people didn´t even know where he was, even less what he did. Unless something happened that made it impossible to avoid. The books of recent years were all about cashing in on the attention.

by Anonymousreply 79January 31, 2021 11:48 PM

R79 Some people are definitely harder to understand than others. I'm reading a bio about Sam Cooke right now, and he is one of those people who will never be fully understood either. It's a great bio by the way written by Peter Guralnick. It would take a writer of this caliber to unravel George. One thing George did was make up the story about his uncle committing suicide on the day he was born. It didn't happen that way at all so when George says he wrote his parents a letter telling them he was gay I just don't buy it. These are the things we'll never have the real answer for. You basically have to go by the proven record of what people's actions were then work in reverse to try and figure them out. People can say anything, but it's what they do that tells the story.

Someone has written an essay on George that is published in the British Journal of Psychotherapy. It's called Of Distance and Desire: "The Many Metamorphosis of George Michael and the origins of his Creativity." You have to pay to read it which I'm not going to do. I did petition the author to see if she would send it to me but was declined because I'm not a professional psychologist affiliated with an institution. I do know this author believes George suffered from internalized homophobia then from there she is using the work of two psychologists I'm not familiar with to formulate whatever her theories are. This kind of study keeps the brain working so that in itself is worthwhile.

“Somebody tell me... “ has beautiful vocals

by Anonymousreply 81February 1, 2021 12:45 AM

I’m not sure just how much money George Michael made over the years from his song “Last Christmas”. George donated the royalties from “Last Christmas” to the Ethiopian famine relief as well as the royalties from the song “Jesus to a Child”.

by Anonymousreply 82February 2, 2021 8:03 AM

George never had a child and never had sex with a woman. He was POZ and possibly killed himself or was murdered by Fadi. Or od'd. But not natural causes. Family will never tell and don't have to. And Fadi missed his chance to cash in by being 5150.

by Anonymousreply 83February 2, 2021 10:47 AM

R83 I agree with you as far as George never having children. I think what this Alpha woman has posted is fiction. I do, however, think George did have sex with women early in his life but not many. He was a gay man. I don't discount he could have been POZ, but once again there is nothing that I know of to support that theory. I don't think he was murdered even though the whole thing with Fadi was screwed up from the start. George was obsessed over sex with strangers to the point he even convinced himself that those who didn't live this way were all jealous of his lifestyle. It wasn't a direct suicide but a slow suicide over the years. If it's true he spent the last 18 months of his life in some Swiss rehab then that could explain why no drugs were found. The way I understand the law is if his heart disease & fatty liver were the primary cause of death than whatever drugs may have been in his system didn't need to be reported. George's family would certainly just want the public to believe his death was by natural causes only.

George was deluded to think he could smoke cigarettes then in addition smoke multiple joints day after day and pay no price for that. He was caught with crack cocaine and other drugs so no one could carry on like this and not end up dead at an early age. He was a very messed up person. I think had his mom not died when she did he might have pulled through all this and still be with us. Guess it just wasn't meant to be.

by Anonymousreply 84February 2, 2021 6:05 PM

I hear Freedom 90, Careless Whisper and Father Figure constantly. There’s also Wham’s WMUBYGG, which is an iconic and universally recognized pop tune for its era, and a huge part of Michael’s legacy. Originating a new Christmas standard is icing on an already impressive cake.

STFU, OP.
