Monster, without a doubt. It puts lesbians in a horrible light, but it's an incredible movie. I was really struck by the fact that Charlize Theron's mannerisms and manner of speech were virtually identical to a lesbian I knew who currently lives in FL. Creepy-good acting.
If you're looking for great sex scenes, my nomination is Chloe with Julianne Moore -- OTOH, I've always had a thing for Julianne Moore, so you may not enjoy it as much as I did.
If you want to see a plain-old tearjerker, Lost and Delirious is my fav. I know -- it's deeply adolescent. But I think people might be surprised how often this general plot plays out in real life. These are the lesbians who had the high school/college crush, fell madly in love, and for one reason or another, couldn't make themselves come out. Mostly, they go on to marry men, and, once their kids are grown, finally figure out that they were lesbians all along. Great movie -- starring Piper Perabo, Mischa Barton, and Jessica Pare long before they became famous. And they all look beautiful.
And if you want to see something a little bit thought-provoking (but also with great sex), see Concussion. Apparently it's full of women from Sons of Anarchy (I never watched that), but in this movie they look great and have hot sex together. Interesting ending!

True but let's not be pedantic, it is a great lesbian tv show. Well I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Pariah. Such a sad sad movie. But, the ending is inspiring.
The poem at is quoted at end is beautiful.

Lost and Delirious, Aimee and Jaguar, Amour De Femme
there are not enough - and the bad ones are pitched to a straight audiencw

Bound, hands down. Attractive women, interesting plot, neither of the leads end up dead or with a man at the end of the movie...
by Anonymous | reply 9 | December 13, 2014 1:41 PM |
Bound. Which I love.
Imagine You and Me is okay.
The rest are generally awful, worthy, affected trash where invariably a lesbian has to die for being a deviant or go back to men.
Lesbians are horrible film makers. They usually make better television. As long as it's not about lesbians. When they lose their minds again.
And I say all this as a lesbian.

Amen, R10.

"Viola di Mare". Probably for me because one of the leads reminds me of the "one that got away".

I don't think there are any great lesbian films. But at least there are a few that are pretty good.

I'm partial to The Group. There is a sneaky lesbian triumph in the final scene amidst all the tragedy and disillusion. I love the Candice Bergen character.

Blue Is the Warmest Colour (2013) France
Show Me Love (1998) Sweden
Another Way (1982) Hungary
Ingmar Bergman saw Show Me Love and called it a masterpiece - a very sweet, coming-of-age film with amazing performances.
Incidentally, all three films were directed by heterosexual men.

What did anyone think of Nicole Conn's Elena Undone?
Necar Zadegan and Traci Dinwiddie had great chemistry in the film.
What is Nicole Conn like outside of her directing profession? Is she still with Marina Rice Bader?

Have you seen any good lesbian movies recently?
by Anonymous | reply 55 | March 22, 2015 2:48 PM |
Though it was ultimately rather heart-wrenching and depressing, I was thrilled as a just-coming-out lesbian to stumble across Portrait of a Marriage, back in 1992 when it aired in the US on public television.
It is the British miniseries based on the autobiographical novel by Nigel Nicolson, writing about the the marriage of convenience between Nicolson's parents, historian Harold Nicolson and novelist Vita Sackville-West.
Vita is played by the great Janet McTeer.
"Although the elder Nicolson was homosexual, his wife Vita was not only forgiving, but also obliging when he strayed from home and hearth to pursue partners of his own gender. After all, Vita was herself embroiled in a torrid -- and ultimately tragic -- affair with one Violet Keppel (played by Cathryn Harrison). The winner of a BAFTA award for Best Costume Design, Portrait of a Marriage was telecast in Britain and New Zealand in 1990, and in the United States two years later."
...You might be able to find it on youtube. I watched it about a year ago that way.

I enjoyed 'Kissing Jessica Stein' even though she ends up not being "gay enough."
I can't remember the writer/star's name, but her long time partner, Jon Hamm, went on to huge success in Mad Men.
She's very cute, funny and cool. I wish she were gay enough to be a lesbian!!

The film Fire, dir. by Deepa Mehta. Its premise is a little cliched (and was critiqued by Indian lesbians and feminists for this reason): 2 women, who happen to be sisters-in-law, are neglected by their husbands and fall in love with each other. The script is heavyhanded in places, but really lifts from the point where the relationship starts. The performances by Indian actresses Nandita Das and Shabana Azmi are lovely and natural, and the ending is upbeat, for once.
