Does the media ever feel guilty about lying to the public about gay celebrities?

Do members of the media ever feel guilty about "inning" gay celebrities?

I always wonder how they feel when they sit down and write those articles about how John and Kelly are so happy in their marriage (or whatever). Do they feel guilty about lying and pretending being gay is something to hide, or do they even care? Anyone?

by Anonymousreply 41April 20, 2019 4:35 PM

Nope. They do it because they know they will get exclusives.

by Anonymousreply 1October 30, 2014 7:22 PM

R1, what do you mean by exclusives?

by Anonymousreply 2October 30, 2014 7:32 PM

I don't give a fuck about NPH and Matt Bomer with their partners. No kink.

by Anonymousreply 3October 30, 2014 8:11 PM

R3, what does that have to do with anything?

by Anonymousreply 4October 31, 2014 12:21 AM

it's not the media's job to expose beard marriages. do you like gay witch hunts?

by Anonymousreply 5October 31, 2014 12:26 AM

[quote]what do you mean by exclusives?

For example: If PEOPLE magazine ignores all the lawsuits from gym employees against John Travolta, he'll give them exclusive photos of John teaching his daughter to fly a jet plane.

by Anonymousreply 6October 31, 2014 12:28 AM

OP, people who pursue careers as entertainment reporters usually have no souls.

I mean, like, duh.

by Anonymousreply 7October 31, 2014 12:28 AM

You realize they lie about a lot more than sexuality right? So much of the entertainment industry is a sham.

It is all about creating and controlling images.

by Anonymousreply 8October 31, 2014 12:30 AM

r5, I don't think telling the truth is a witch hunt. Aren't reporters supposed to do just that - report?

by Anonymousreply 9October 31, 2014 12:31 AM

There's no such thing as 'media'. It's just an arm of 1% corporate interests.

by Anonymousreply 10October 31, 2014 12:33 AM

Reporters report what the editor assigns to them. They don't have control over what goes into the newspaper --- and they usually don't write the headline. That's why some headlines don't always match the story -- there are some really stupid headline writers.

by Anonymousreply 11October 31, 2014 12:34 AM

r9, when the masseuses come forward, the media reports it. other than that, it's not really right to pry into other people's private lives for headlines. i'm just not into that with a 20 year marriage. at this point it's time to let it go. I can understand prying into new relationships because I am nosey as shit, but when you've put in 25 yrs, you've earned the right to be left alone.

by Anonymousreply 12October 31, 2014 12:36 AM

It's funny how even "legit" magazines do this, not just the tabloids.

I remember reading an issue of Entertainment Weekly after Michael Jackson died and it described Brooke Shields as his "ex-girlfriend" even though she fucking admitted that they were just friends and there was nothing romantic between them. I don't understand why anyone bothers maintaining that illusion anymore, does anyone really believe that their "romance" was for real? Are they that upset at the idea of telling the truth to the Michael Jackson fan brigade?

by Anonymousreply 13October 31, 2014 12:38 AM

We're not talking about Woodward and Bernstein here.

These are people employed to write puff-pieces for puff-piece publications. You can't sensibly expect anything else from US Weekly, People, et al.

by Anonymousreply 14October 31, 2014 12:43 AM

r14, I'm not just talking about "fluff" magazines, the legit media does this, too.

by Anonymousreply 15October 31, 2014 12:49 AM

Gay publications do it too. Out Magazine did a feature story on Matt Bomer when he was heavily campaigning for The Normal Heart and he gave a mind-bogglingly dishonest interview to which the interviewer, Shana Naomi Krochmal (god I hope she has Google alerts), raised no counterpoint or objection. Then when he lost the Emmy (which did not come as a surprise to anyone who actually works in television) she went on Twitter and blamed homophobia and retweeted some of the ming-bogglingly dishonest quotes from that interview without any sense of irony.

Let's be frank, the people who pursue this kind of work are shallow and not terribly bright.

by Anonymousreply 16October 31, 2014 12:58 AM

OP - give us an example using "legit" media.

by Anonymousreply 17October 31, 2014 1:02 AM

Media is much too busy reporting the nonsense out of Fergson, MO. to worry about gays. Besides, just about every star's P/R person makes sure only the "good news" gets into print or on tv. Hollywood believes most people (fans) are stupid and believe that kissing, happy family pose of celebrities.

by Anonymousreply 18October 31, 2014 1:04 AM

R16, what did the article say that was dishonest?

by Anonymousreply 19October 31, 2014 1:05 AM

Oh yeah, for some closet case to be outed? Yes, I like that, I really, really do.

by Anonymousreply 20October 31, 2014 1:07 AM

[quote]OP, people who pursue careers as entertainment reporters usually have no souls.

This is the truth.

by Anonymousreply 21October 31, 2014 1:09 AM

Ferguson is real and anyone who hates racism should be supporting those people. I'm sick to death of cops murdering young black people and getting away with it.

Don't compare Ferguson to God awful closet cases.

by Anonymousreply 22October 31, 2014 1:12 AM

r21, what's funny is that Ted C. was hyping the "Twilight" fauxmance pretty heavily

by Anonymousreply 23October 31, 2014 1:14 AM

R19 it was just the same old bullshit he always spouts about how he never hid anything and how honest he is and much the message of The Normal Heart has meant to him since he was a teenager.

The asshole put his own kid in the closet and then thinks he deserves an Emmy for a gay rights film criticizing cowardly closet cases.

by Anonymousreply 24October 31, 2014 1:24 AM

[quote] The asshole put his own kid in the closet and then thinks he deserves an Emmy for a gay rights film criticizing cowardly closet cases.

Is there a link to a thread that discusses this? How old is the kid anyway. Never heard of this guy until DL where he seems to beloved.

by Anonymousreply 25October 31, 2014 1:34 AM

There are like 20 threads that discuss this. The kid is six now.

by Anonymousreply 26October 31, 2014 1:39 AM

Oh, I see. r24 meant that he kept the fact that he has a kid secret, not that he actually kept him in the closet about being gay. That's disappointingly less salacious.

by Anonymousreply 27October 31, 2014 1:44 AM

[quote]it's not the media's job to expose beard marriages. do you like gay witch hunts?

it's not a witch hunt if it's okay to be gay

by Anonymousreply 28October 31, 2014 1:50 AM

[quote]The asshole put his own kid in the closet and then thinks he deserves an Emmy for a gay rights film criticizing cowardly closet cases.

R24 He's jealous of the closet cases, who are mostly his friends. His coming out wasn't that brave and sincere. He also lied about when he discovered his gayness in his 20s, after dating several girls in school at the same time his publicist husband was releasing the old news on several online gay magazines saying he was openly gay since high school and did The Normal Heart with Lee Pace when Pace's movie Guardians of The Galaxy making its debut, just like he did during The Hobbit premiere.

by Anonymousreply 29October 31, 2014 2:22 AM

Why would he be jealous of closet cases? They are sad.

by Anonymousreply 30October 31, 2014 2:32 AM

R30 Robot, do you have other thing to say other than "sad"?

by Anonymousreply 31October 31, 2014 2:53 AM

I am originally from Pittsburgh. I asked a person that I knew who worked in the media why reporters in Pittsburgh almost never wrote or spoke about rumors about Kordell Stewart and Kevin McClatchy.

In the case of Stewart, my friend said that no one in Pittsburgh media wants to cross the Rooneys and the Steeler organization. The Rooneys and the Steelers wouldn't just blackball the reporter, they would blackball anyone from the reporter's employer. Yeah, one talk show host asked Stewart point blank about the rumors, but the talk show host's employers isn't a sport station.

As Kevin McClatchy, even my mother heard the rumors about him. My friend said that most Pittsburghers couldn't have picked McClatchy out of a police lineup. Secondly, he was only an executive, not an athlete. Third, McClatchy is rich and white as are most of the owners of media operations.

Dumb people help each other.

by Anonymousreply 33October 31, 2014 3:28 AM

You flyover idiots should spend some time concentrating on real issues that are impacting the lives of gay people instead of this seemingly endless obsession with celebrity. Get off DL, read a newspaper, volunteer. DO SOMETHING.

by Anonymousreply 34October 31, 2014 11:59 AM

...said the person who paid eighteen dollars to post on this board.

by Anonymousreply 35October 31, 2014 12:47 PM

r34, why don't you?

by Anonymousreply 36October 31, 2014 3:09 PM

I've known writers for gay publications who've been pissed in the past when they've been tasked with interviewing or writing about our "straight allies" who are in fact closeted men and women.

A couple were irked when they were told a singer or actor was finally willing to come out, only to show up for the interview and learn the subject had gotten cold feet.

by Anonymousreply 37October 31, 2014 3:16 PM

Details, r37!

by Anonymousreply 38October 31, 2014 3:23 PM

When Bomer was promoting The Normal Heart he was actually scheduled to go on Michelangelo Signorile's radio show but ended up cancelling... maybe Signorile wouldn't agree to a softball interview with him.

by Anonymousreply 39October 31, 2014 3:37 PM

I don't want to post anything that might get the thread deleted, R38. None of the people who were on the fence about coming out would've come as a shock to anyone, it's always the usual suspects (ahem).

One I will mention by name, since it was discussed here at the time, was Shelby Lynne. She was ready to come out to a gay magazine and then got drunk and things didn't go as planned.

by Anonymousreply 40October 31, 2014 3:55 PM

I was about to start a similar thread and found this old one. Bumping.
