"Terror Train" starring Jamie Lee Curtis
SPOILERS ALERT!!!
What a preposterous yet enjoyably campy horror movie: a tranny killer wearing Groucho Marx mask, sexy Hart Bochner playing a closeted scumbag, Jamie Lee Curtis before she had her awful teeth fixed, Ben Johnson trying to bring the movie a touch of class, David Copperfield doing magic tricks, Vanity before Vanity 6 fame...
It's much more entertaining and original than your average 80's slasher flick. Any fans here?

I think there was a rremake, no ?? If not, there should be. One of the better ones for its time,
OP has it a little wrong though .... the killer mostly wears the costumes of a prior victim.

There was a movie called "Train" a few years back that was originally intended to be a remake but ended up being more like "Hostel." It's been showing on one of the pay movie channels recently. A haggard looking Thora Birch stars.

I absolutely love Terror Train. I saw it on HBO in the middle of the night at a friend's house when I had snuck out of my own. I recall the walk by in pitch dark to be quite unnerving.
The movie is one of my favorites from the genre and era.
And don't forget the wonder when the killer's identity is unveiled!!!

The first horror movie I ever saw. Still fun today.

The part where they show the body deliberately placed on the tracks so the victim's head will get crushed by the wheels gave me nightmares as a kid.

Liked it much better upon second viewing. Very claustrophobic. Although it's pretty obvious who the killer is early on.

Count me in as another fan. Just bought the Scream Factory dvd not too long ago. Great fun! I'm a sucker for Jamie Lee in a horror flick.

Jamie had balls to make those kinds of films.

Hart Bochner was so fucking hot back then. And his character in this movie is very obviously gay (or at least bi) and he seems to have a serious crush on Jamie Lee's boyfriend. He even offers himself to him in one scene and when the boyfriend dies he cries like a little girl and kisses his body on the neck.
And I didn't find the movie's ending predictable at all. They didn't try to hide the fact that it is that bullied kid who's the killer but I don't think many people realized that he's actually the magician's sexy assistant.
I guess you could say the movie is a bit homophobic (Bochner's character is a douche and the batshit crazy tranny is the killer) but it was made 35 years ago and all the gayness in it only adds to its campy appeal today.

I loved Hart in this, too. Still find him terribly sexy.

Jamie actually hated horror movies and she hated being the "Scream Queen," but "Halloween" typecast her so much she was only offered horror movies. It's odd that the industry didn't initially see her potential as a mainstream star.

What's Prom Night with Jamie Lee like? Is it worth checking out? Can anyone recommend any other good 80's slashers. I haven't seen that many so far but I really liked The Burning and My Bloody Valentine while I hated April Fool's Day and Sleepaway Camp.

R16, how about Bloody Birthday?

"Prom Night" is slow but offers a lot of camp as well with ridiculously extended disco sequences and some classic cheesy dialogue. The opening sequence with the kids is truly disturbing. The entire movie is on youtube.

"Happy Birthday To Me" is a lot of fun, r16. Also try "The Unseen" - not purely a slasher but it's from the era and follows a lot of the tropes and it's truly bizarre.

It's one of the better 1980's horror films, but nothing great.

Prom Night's got mystery and who doesn't love that "Prom Night" disco song used at the dance.
R16, how could you hate Sleepaway Camp? It's the Showgirls of horror movies. It's SO bad it's good.
Silent Night Deadly Night, Black Christmas, and The Fog are worth checking out

Terror Train was always just ok for the most part, but the last 30 minutes are pretty great. Hart Bochner though..sweet baby Jesus! That was the sexiest man I've ever seen.
I always really dug Prom Night. It's a bit made for TV-ish at times, but it's got a good script, decent performances [Anne-Marie Martin as bitch Wendy is brilliant], and the final 30 minutes do have some tension. Plus, it's one of the only slasher films I can think of with a heartbreaking ending.
Damn, I really miss those 80's slashers. There was something so fun about them. I loved sneaking them as a kid.

I didn't like Curtains (except for the ice skating scene) or The Prowler. I shut Motel Hell off after 20 minutes. What a POS. Haven't seen the others you mentioned.
Forgot to mention The House on Sorority Row!! It's good and very underrated. And if you're a Days of Our Lives fan, it's got Eileen Davidson in it.

R22 Curtains has one fantastic death scene that makes it worth watching.
Tourist Trap bored me. Hell Night is so-so- haunted house story mixed with mutated killer IIRC.
It's not really a slasher but The Fog may even trump Halloween for me when it comes to JLC's horror work.

One of the few 80s slashers that actually has great cinematography, good acting, great atmosphere, solid direction and a suspenseful script.
The addition of the "magician" element adds a touch of mystery and the supernatural and the scene where Jamie Lee is trapped in the cage while the masked killer takes out all the light fixtures is truly freaky.
I remember watching it on a free HBO preview when I was a kid and thinking it was really creepy and was pleased to discover I liked it even more when I re-watched it recently.

I saw it a few years ago on tv and liked it lol.
I just wish Vanity had had a bigger role as she was simply mesmerizing to watch. 1 of the most beautiful women to ever step into hollywood for sure.
For the elders here, was going on a "train party" something that the cool kids did back in the 70s and 80s? I never knew about this.

I'm Watching Hellraiser which is great even though it's technically not a slasher.

I agree. It's sad how her career ended and how her life turned out, but that's what drugs can do. I have no doubt her career would've been much bigger if she hadn't been on drugs 24/7.

I rented Terror Train only once in the late 80s. I wanted to see everything JLC was in after becoming obsessed with Halloween. TT wasn't as good as The Fog, though.
Tourist Trap, mentioned above, is one HELL of a ride, however. I can't believe anyone would be bored by it. It has a scene that is so grim and awful it makes you wonder how the hell the movie got a PG rating. It was released on blu-ray recently and unfortunately a print that omitted five minutes of footage (for no apparent reason) was used as the master. There was some internet uproar over that. It's from 1979 but has a great early 80s feel to it, if you like Terror Train or The Burning or the original Friday the 13th, it's along those lines.
I used to love April Fool's Day back then, too. Deborah Foreman was the gorgeous one, right? Rented it many times. Tried to watch it recently and couldn't get through the first twenty minutes.

I'd forgotten about The Burning R34. That's a good one. The raft moment- I can't think of any of the slashers from that time pulling off *that* much carnage in one scene.

It's nice to know that actor Derek McKinnon, who played "Kenny" and his female alter-ego, has kept his girlish figure.

I really enjoy HELL NIGHT. Linda Blair is an appealing heroine and it features Peter Barton, Kevin Brophy, and Vincent Van Patten. None of them, unfortunately, get nekkid although Vincent spends a bit of time in boxers sans shirt. ALONE IN THE DARK is another fun one. Jack Palance plays one of the group of lunatics who escape an asylum. There's some dark humor mixed in with the scares. I've been trying to track down HOUSE ON SORORITY ROW to watch again online, but have had no luck. I don't remember much about it other than that Eileen Davidson is in it.

It's funny how Hart's character is this mean, douche-y guy....then when his "friend" dies he turns into a weepy frau.

"Prom Night" is uneven in parts. It feels like Curtis was grafted into scenes as, at the end, she just kind of vanishes.
And the whole "let's show them what we can do!" disco scene is mortifying.
Plus, it has a pretty unattractive male cast.

Who's seen "Fear No Evil" with the bizarre voguing bad guy and the gym shower full frontal scene where the lead bully kisses the nerd apparently to humiliate him?

Agree with the upthread comment about "Prom Night" having a heartbreaking ending -- when it's revealed who the killer is, and how that plays out -- it's one of the few slasher films that made me cry at the end.
Another one I love is "The Funhouse" -- a group of teens dare each other to spend the night at a carnival funhouse, only to have a sideshow freak hunt them down after they witness him killing a psychic/prostitute (memorably played by Sylvia Miles). Directed by Tobe Hooper (the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre).
