I searched but I didn't see a proper thread for this delightful new show. I absolutely loved the first episode. It's very appealing. What did others think?
Jane the Virgin

It is created by Jennie Syder-Urman. She is an excellent tv writer/producer.
She will be bigger than Susan Harris, and as big as Shonda Rhimes. Wait and see.

This show is surprisingly fun. Anyone else watching?

This is the first I have heard of it.

For someone who has no interest in sitting through teen shlock, would someone mind revealing the plot point of how she is pregnant if she didn't have sex? All I have seen of the show is the promo but I have no vested interest in adding more programing to my tv plate. Was it a hot tub pregnancy, dirty toilet seat, or a miracle virgin birth like Mary the mother of Jesus?

I had the same attitude as you r5 and then I watched the pilot and thought hey this is funny. She had a check up at her gynecologist, but the doctor was upset (her wife cheated on her) and accidentally artificially inseminated her instead of another woman (her sister in law). If you ever watched telenovelas you'll find this amusing.

We can't wait!

It's got an Ugly Betty feel to it. Quite fun.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | October 27, 2014 3:26 PM |
I think Ugly Betty was also based on telenovela.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | October 27, 2014 3:31 PM |
It is one of the lowest rated on the CW. In danger of being cancelled. So don't get attached.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | October 27, 2014 3:57 PM |
It's actually a really fun, quirky show (sort of in the vein of Arrested Development).
I hope it gets an audience.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | October 27, 2014 4:02 PM |
r6, that would never happen so the whole premise of the show is ridiculous.

Another CW show with lesbians
by Anonymous | reply 13 | October 27, 2014 4:23 PM |
It had such good reviews I watched.
Surprisingly I really liked it. It's very whimsical and funny. Any it has a really hot Latin guy whose sperm was used to impregnate Jane.

The first of anything I heard about this, the show was getting criticized. I had no interest in watching. Then, the buzz started growing more positive so I decided to give it a shot - and I'm glad I did. It was cute, funny, charming show - based loosely on a telenovela, and as such, is full of over the top, super twisty stories that are meant to be enjoyed and not taken too seriously.

EW put it on its "Must List." I'd like to check it out, but my cable company doesn't offer CW on demand ... the other four networks, but not CW.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | October 27, 2014 5:12 PM |
It's already been picked up for a full-season order. It looks sweet.

R16
Why can't you watch it online ?
by Anonymous | reply 18 | October 27, 2014 6:53 PM |
CW is not On Demand. You have to get their app and see the entire episodes through their website.
That last twist between the doctor and her ex was hysterical!!!!!
Truly telenovela stuff.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | October 27, 2014 7:21 PM |
R16, which cable company do you have? Just curious. I watched it via Comcast On Demand.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | October 27, 2014 7:24 PM |
R20 I have Charter.

Shockingly good and original. I can't believe I like it, let alone love it, but I do. Just watch the first episode (its free on iTunes) and you'll see.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | October 27, 2014 9:45 PM |
The hot Latin guy is the only reason to watch.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | October 28, 2014 2:27 AM |
Terrible, creepy, smug cunt show. I lasted four minutes and felt sick after even that length of time.
And I want to slap the star's fetal-alcohol-syndrome face every time it slides greasily onto the screen.
Oh, for the days of UGLY BETTY. Imperfect but often clever.

That guy isn't latin or gay, r23
Justin Baldoni played a gay guy in some other CW series, called Everwood. He was played up as an ambiguously gay guy. It made me curious if he is gay himself - his twitter feed at the time wasn't clear.
He is married, and practices the Bahá'í Faith. Does moralistic films.

I will say it again, Jane is an Ignorant Slut.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | October 28, 2014 2:54 AM |
Justin did some offensive commercial as a flaming gay stereotype.

Just watched the first 2 episodes on Hulu. I like it a lot. I've always been fascinated by those telenovelas but forgot my high school Spanish. I always stop and pause on them while channel surfing and wish I could understand them.
I love the narrator too.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | November 2, 2014 2:41 PM |
Justin is hot.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | November 2, 2014 2:57 PM |
I really like it. The whole cast is really great, but Jane's dad is my favorite.

by Anonymous | reply 35 | October 31, 2015 6:11 AM |
I think they got picked up for a second full season.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | November 1, 2015 4:01 AM |
I watched the series premiere and I was amused to a point. However after it ended I felt no need to ever return to the show again. It was like Ugly Betty without the wit and made specifically for women. I haven't watched telenovelas and I'm not into soaps so the series just felt too ridiculous. What Ugly Betty did tongue-in-cheek this show did for real. Not good.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | November 1, 2015 6:49 AM |
OMG! Last night's episode!
by Anonymous | reply 38 | February 7, 2017 10:05 PM |
I can see why they did what they did from a story line standpoint - but it really does take a more romantic, cotton candy show and give it some depressing realism that might mess with the show in the long run. The other plots dealing with Raphael, Petra etc. are dark enough as it is - so it was good to have something a little happier, and more grounded in reality, to balance them out.

Last night's episode was a shocker.

I can't believe no one's mentioned Jaime Camil, the hot latin Daddy who seems to swing both ways. Seems like the gayest actor on the show.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | April 4, 2019 4:16 AM |
He does seem super gay, but never actually read of any actual boyfriends -- or boys on the side.
And he's got a new movie cumming out: My Boyfriend's Meds!

Jaime Camil new show has been cancelled.
