Your Favorite Joni Mitchell Album?
I listed my top eight in the poll.
"Other" would include:
Song to a Seagull (1968), Don Juan's Reckless Daughter (1977), Mingus (1979), Wild Things Run Fast (1982), Dog Eat Dog (1985), Chalk Mark in a Rainstorm (1988), Turbulent Indigo (1994), Taming the Tiger (1998), Both Sides Now (2000), Travelogue (2002), Shine (2007); plus the two live albums - Miles of Aisles (1974) & Shadows and Light (1980)

So the poll can't handle question marks... The first choice should read:
Who? / Not a Fan / How Old Are You Bitches, Anyway?

The Hissing of Summer Lawns, but I love Hejira too, some awesome lyrics on that record.

Is there really any choice in the matter?

Honourable mention to Both Sides Now, which diverts from the usual routine of presenting older singers doing standards by forming a narrative structure with them, tracing the beginning to the end of a love affair.

"Shadows and Light" (1980, Live) with Pat Metheny on lead guitar and Lyle Mayes on keyboards.

R6 I'm with you. I love many of these albums but I find the texture and richness of Both Sides Now along with the full orchestral accompaniment to be my favorite.

R8 As much as I'm fond of Both Sides Now, I am far less enchanted by her Travelogue record, also done with full orchestration in the style of American standards. The out-of-place soprano sax by Wayne Shorter renders most of it unlistenable to me. Maybe I can work past that. I do like the concept.
Do I need to give it another chance? I feel like the sax lines are analogous to streaks of piss on white carpet.

Ladies of the Canyon. I listened to it a lot before moving to LA and still play it when driving through Topanga. A different era.

Court & Spark is her most completely perfect album, IMO, but I like certain songs on her self-titled first album (now called Song to a Seagull) more than most of her later stuff.
Ladies of the Canyon is another favorite. "The Circle Game" is one of the best songs anyone ever wrote. I heard it first by Tom Rush when I was too young to understand it. Now, any version crushes me.

Joni is someone whose earlier stuff sounds better on LP than on CD. I don't mind listening to the digital files, though. Wonder why I disliked the CDs so.

Every album feels so different and has its own place in m,y life, so hard to choose.
I'm probably the only one who loves "Song to a Seagull" a lot, but I do.
But I had to go with "Summer Lawns" if I had to make a choice for its wonderful, jazzy, 70s feel.

I do. But it was called "Joni Mitchell" when I bought it, at what seemed like such a hopeful time in my life. My favorite songs:
Nights in the City
I Had a King
Nathan LaFraneer
Sisotowbell Lane

NOT the 2015 bump troll, but I didn't want to create a new thread.
Help me Joni aficionados! I'm starting to dip my toes into Joni's discography and I'm not sure which albums I should look into next. I really like Blue (of course), Ladies of the Canyon, The Court and Spark and Herija, so far (I've even bought them on vinyl). Which albums should I listen to/get next? I'm thinking The Hissing of Summer Lawns and For the Roses, they seem like the obvious choices. Is her "later" music worth seeking out of I'm not into jazz? What else should I be listening to.

I loved For the Roses. It was a bit under the radar with her fans but give it a listen. If I were you I would buy all of her albums.

No mention of Miles of Aisles?

I watched an old Streets of San Francisco the other day and noticed that Tom Scott composed the music. He did a bunch of jazz stuff with Joni Mitchell.
