***BREAKING*** ERIC HOLDER RESIGNS AS ATTORNEY GENERAL!
Attorney General Eric Holder will resign, a Justice Department official tells ABC News.
Holder was the nation's first African-American attorney general.
According to the official, "Attorney General Holder has discussed his plans personally with the president on multiple occasions in recent months, and finalized those plans in an hour-long conversation with the president at the White House residence over Labor Day weekend.
"At a formal announcement later today, the attorney general plans to express his personal gratitude to the President for the opportunity to serve in his administration and to lead the Justice Department, which he will call the 'greatest honor of my professional life.' He will note he has loved the Justice Department since, when he was a boy, he watched how, under Attorney General Kennedy, the Department played a leadership role in advancing the civil rights movement. During his tenure as Attorney General, Holder has had Attorney General Kennedy’s portrait in his conference room."

Well, I certainly didn't expect that. Thought he was a full-termer. He's lasted longer than most.

Holder says that he'll stay on until a successor is confirmed.
The way the Senate works now (or I should say doesn't work now) maybe no one will be confirmed.
Hey, it could happen!

R4: Your comment makes no sense. You must be that one-note poster who needs to fill any political thread with bizarre rants against the Right when it's not even the topic. The Attorney General resigns for reasons unknown and you post some failing attempt at wit. Who is dancing in the streets? I realize you need to share "Teabagistan" and have tried hard to find a way to work it into dl, but stop. It's sad. If you were witty it would be one thing, but you try too hard and it fails.

Stop trying to make teabagistan happen Gretchen at R4. It's not going to happen

What the Hell are you talking about, r7? I went to news sites (including the one linked in this thread) and all the responses are from Teabaggers talking repeating the typical Fox News talking points about Holder. Sheesh.

It has to be a scandal. It wouldn't make sense otherwise.

The New Yorker profiled Holder in February and he said then that he planned to leave sometime this year.

The second year of the second Presidential term is the traditional time for staffers to leave. It's the best time to find a good job.
His leaving has nothing to do with anything but tradition.

Obama needs to appoint someone with BALLS to go after Wall St. bankers and securities firms. Holder wouldn't do it and Elizabeth Warren had not received any support from him. Good riddance!

What makes you think it was Holder's, or even Obama's, lack of balls that prevented them from going after the Wall St. bankers? Rather than simple cronyism?

On Diane Rehm this morning, one of the reporters said his doctor wife was worried about his health after something happened a few months ago. He apparently signaled months ago that he'd be leaving. He needed to do it so Obama could nominate someone before the election.

I pointed out to several people today and I'm going to do it here as well - the majority of the coverage in papers, on television, on the Internet and even scrawled on toilet walls is about the reaction of the Right Wing to Holder's resignation.
Almost noting about Holder's resignation.
My observation did not register with anyone I spoke with, and it won't register in the DL either.

My guess is Holder got wind of trouble on the horizon from Congress and he decided to hot foot it out of Dodge before it erupted.

The Right is dancing in the streets I agree. Holder is one of the bright spots in this administration. I have always been a fan of his. I wish Obama would appoint him to the Supreme Court where he can be a thorn in the ass to Scalia, Thomas and Alito.
This is a huge loss to the administration. Holder was a stand up guy. He was a spur to the President. Without Holder to push him, he won't be as strong. There. I've said it.

As far as Wall Street goes Holder wanted a piece of them real bad. I know this for a fact. He wanted to charge in and nail them. Problem? A lot of what they did was legal. He was determined to make it stick, not just rattle his saber. if you bring charges and they beat the rap, it weakens your political position in terms of reform laws.
The whores in Congress don't get nearly enough blame for what happened in 2007,08,09,10. The other problem is that the politics weren't on his side. While it would've given a lot of us enormous satisfaction to see Jamie Dimond and others do the perp walk, alienating the financial institutions at a time when we needed to project financial stability to the world was, in the opinion of many, (not me) ill advised.
