Madonna's "Lucky Star"

With "Like a Virgin" finished and waiting to be unleashed, Madonna released "Lucky Star." After "Borderline" became her first top ten hit, "Lucky Star" became her first top 5 hit peaking at number four starting her record setting 16 top 5 hits in a row...

And revealed the Madonna that started the whole mania in motion.

Thanks for the flash back. She had a beautiful body back then.

by Anonymousreply 1August 29, 2014 4:13 PM

This is so random - who cares?

by Anonymousreply 2August 29, 2014 4:17 PM

Time to run off and play with your XBox, r2.

by Anonymousreply 3August 29, 2014 4:26 PM

Yes R2, this may not be a place for you.

by Anonymousreply 4August 29, 2014 4:46 PM

Her dancing in this video looked so... awkward.

by Anonymousreply 5August 29, 2014 4:54 PM

Have another chocolate eclair, Janet.

by Anonymousreply 6August 29, 2014 5:22 PM

Look how chubby I was then!

by Anonymousreply 7August 29, 2014 8:17 PM

I always liked this one and I think she dances pretty well. BTW that's her estranged brother in the background, he's now fat, bitter and probably posts on the DL.

by Anonymousreply 8August 29, 2014 8:22 PM

OP, Thank you!

This has brought back so many memories of my college days, when I worked my way through school at an internationally recognized 'record' store. (Yes, that one.)

I had the opportunity of meeting her (briefly) during her first US tour: young Lady with an Attitude and still sporting her baby fat. Beautiful face, lots of make-up though.

by Anonymousreply 9August 29, 2014 8:28 PM

R9 - Did she say anything to you?

by Anonymousreply 10August 29, 2014 8:31 PM

It's was like a meet-and-greet. Very friendly, but you could tell there was a definite attitude there: she already knew how she was going to work her magic for with what was coming her way.

by Anonymousreply 11August 29, 2014 8:35 PM

R11 - I doubt she would have been where she is without atitude.

R11, interesting post. I've always wondered just to what extent Madonna "planned" her career. She seemed very brazen in her early years but I've always thought that was due youthful/naive arrogance. I figured she really took her career as it came. But now I wonder if she truly knew exactly how she was going to change music. I don't see how given how fickle the music industry/musical trends/pop stardom is. But ya never know...

by Anonymousreply 22August 29, 2014 10:24 PM

She was quite attractive and sexy in her prime and it went a long way to making her a star. Even non-fans should be able to admit that. Especially since we think it's one of the reasons she become overly successful given her talent level. Although some, like Janet, have even less of a voice. I'd add Kylie to that too.

by Anonymousreply 23August 29, 2014 10:27 PM

I think she planned the general outline.

by Anonymousreply 24August 29, 2014 10:27 PM

I dont get all this, she wasnt pretty or that attractive back in the say....she was and her bone structure was flawless.

For me around the Dick Tracy era was her prime.

by Anonymousreply 25August 29, 2014 10:41 PM

She went after Jellybean Benitiz for one purpose: to become his lover so he'd produce her (her debut album). He was a very hot DJ/producer at the time.

Then once JB served his purpose (her debut album), she dumped him and moved on to work with Nile Rodgers. The rest is history.

She eventually worked with Massive Attack later in her career.

The lady knows how to pick her producers.

by Anonymousreply 26August 29, 2014 10:43 PM

I think her prime was around Papa Don't Preach.

by Anonymousreply 27August 29, 2014 10:45 PM

She didn't have flawless bone structure - her face was rather square, but she knew how to work angles.

As much as one criticise her (and how one can...), I defer to Nile Rodgers' assessment that she had the best pop instincts of anyone with whom he's worked.

R29, really? I love that performance of "Lucky Star." She seems to be singing slower but she has a lot of energy on stage.

by Anonymousreply 31August 29, 2014 11:22 PM

She's fucking beautiful!

by Anonymousreply 32August 29, 2014 11:24 PM

R31 - Her singing was good, but her dancing seemed to be off.

by Anonymousreply 33August 29, 2014 11:24 PM

I'm no fan of Kylie's voice but she can sing better than Madonna.

by Anonymousreply 34August 29, 2014 11:33 PM

I think she was cute, nothing extraordinary but there was that something extra that came across on camera when she performed. Funny how it totally did not carry over to the movie screen, except for Desperately Seeking Susan, where she was essentially playing herself and she was white hot.

by Anonymousreply 35August 30, 2014 2:16 AM

She was stunning in DSS.

by Anonymousreply 36August 30, 2014 2:20 AM

R16 that performance venue is straight out of After Hours or Desperately Seeking Susan, it really was like that in the early 80's. So cool.

by Anonymousreply 37August 30, 2014 6:15 PM

Lucky Star is almost mid-tempo by today's standards. It's a great song, but if you dance to it, it is a little slow. Curious what the today's youngsters think of her in her youth?

by Anonymousreply 38August 30, 2014 6:19 PM

More like "Lucky Whore".

Rocco looks like her brother.

by Anonymousreply 41August 30, 2014 6:49 PM

And while Madonna gets a lot of shit, I think most of it is uncalled for. Is she the best singer in the world? No, but it's pop and she doesn't have to. And in her early years, meaning her first 10 years, she didn't have a song that wasn't a hit or didn't become a "classic."

The way the music industry is today, you won't ever see that again.

Borderline is one of my favorites and I think it's highly underrated.

by Anonymousreply 42August 30, 2014 6:51 PM

I'd like to know the story behind "Burning Up". There's the original vinyl LP version, the video/CD version and the 12" version. I'm not sure what combination of Reggie Lucas and Jellybean is responsible for each version.

by Anonymousreply 43August 30, 2014 6:55 PM

[quote] Is she the best singer in the world? No, but it's pop and she doesn't have to.

She deserves all the criticism she gets for her live vocals. If she put the work into her voice that she does into her body, she could sing her mostly not especially rangey songs well live. Instead she appears to blow out her vocal cords early into her tours.

Of course, someone's going to say "at least she sings live!" as if that makes up for her not bothering he ass to learn some proper technique.

by Anonymousreply 44August 30, 2014 6:58 PM

I wonder what kids today think of Madonna.

by Anonymousreply 45August 30, 2014 8:53 PM

She's a bitch but she's had so many good songs. Burning Up, Live to Tell, Get Together, Borderline, Music....

by Anonymousreply 46August 30, 2014 9:27 PM

And yet R44, it does count for something.

She could go out there and lip sync the way Cher and countless others do, but at least she puts in the effort.

Besides, if she did lip sync then everyone would get on her case and say, "She should sing live even if she sucks."

Some people are just always looking for something to bitch about.

by Anonymousreply 47August 30, 2014 9:36 PM

Honestly, there will never be another woman like Madonna who will have contributed so much to the music and popular culture.

by Anonymousreply 48August 30, 2014 9:48 PM

She came to NY to be a dancer.

by Anonymousreply 49August 31, 2014 12:34 AM

I thought they all lipsynced R47 R44

by Anonymousreply 50August 31, 2014 12:37 AM

[quote] I thought they all lipsynced

Madonna mixes lipsyncing with live vocals. It's very obvious on her concert videos.

by Anonymousreply 51August 31, 2014 12:41 AM

Lucky star refers to her anus.

by Anonymousreply 52August 31, 2014 12:42 AM

R51 it's mixed during Televised or DVD recordings, like any other artist will do. She does sing live at her shows. Trust me, you can tell.

by Anonymousreply 53August 31, 2014 12:45 AM

Yes, but she also has pre-recorded vocals for the dance heavy parts of songs.

by Anonymousreply 54August 31, 2014 1:12 AM

During her last tour, several of the songs were lipsynced. For example, when she performed that shitty "Girl Gone Wild", throughout the song she would have the microphone down at her hips while she was dancing and the vocals were still going! I thought what an idiot - at least wear a headset mic and pretend like you're singing to not make it look so obvious.

by Anonymousreply 55August 31, 2014 1:16 AM

Ive seen Madonna live multiple times and there was never a pre-recorded track, even during the dance heavy parts of her songs. You could tell she was singing. She probably should have used a track.

by Anonymousreply 56August 31, 2014 1:17 AM

r47 you are right. She should learn how to sing properly in concerts but she is the rare pop artist that actually sings live. She doesn't get enough credit for her live shows.

The only thing I dislike about her current singing voice, is that it lost all the rawness it once had. Borderline and Lucky Star are great examples of her "soulful" voice.

by Anonymousreply 57August 31, 2014 1:19 AM

What I think is odd and perhaps stupid is that Madonna does a full run-through of her show each night before the actual show (which is why she always goes on so late). It's not as if her show varies night to night so I don't see what the point is in that.

by Anonymousreply 58August 31, 2014 1:25 AM

Where during Girl Gone Wild does she put her mic down while her voice is still playing?

Pretty sure it didn't happen once let alone, "multiple times."

She sings live and doesn't use a track. She'd sound better if she did.

by Anonymousreply 59August 31, 2014 1:36 AM

A lot of acts do that.

by Anonymousreply 60August 31, 2014 1:37 AM

She does it for the first time at 5:40 and 5:50, R59. There's a backing track going as she waves her arms around.

by Anonymousreply 61August 31, 2014 1:39 AM

R59 You stupid Vadge stan in denial - right at the 5:42 mark, you can CLEARLY see her mic at her hips while the vocals are still playing.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 62August 31, 2014 1:43 AM

Jesus you're a moron. That's not even her voice.

by Anonymousreply 63August 31, 2014 1:53 AM

It's funny that she actually got some vocal training for Evita and completely lost whatever character her voice had. It was never great but it was a nice tinny pop voice that was suitable for the material. It's kind of like the whole process of singing properly confused her sound.

by Anonymousreply 64August 31, 2014 2:07 AM

I'm sort of with R63. The part where she waves her arms around, it doesn't sound like she's the one singing the "hey hey hey," probably a backup singer. Her voice seems to come back in at the "Like a girl gone wild" part.

by Anonymousreply 65August 31, 2014 2:15 AM

People blame EVITA but I think the change was also due to her development of a transatlantic accent.

by Anonymousreply 66August 31, 2014 2:16 AM

The whore not only can't sing, she apparently can't talk. I've never seen her do anything but lipsynch to the spoken rap in Vogue. And no, there is no excuse. I'm a fan of the bitch, but her live shows are a joke. There's very little "live" there.

by Anonymousreply 67August 31, 2014 2:17 AM

Lmfao @ these Vadge stans lauding this woman as a talented, beautiful artist. She never could sing, was never a beauty, and is unoriginal. Her "contributions" are simply plagiarism of what other more talented people have already done. There is no one more delusional than a Vadge stan.

by Anonymousreply 68August 31, 2014 2:19 AM

[quote] Her "contributions" are simply plagiarism of what other more talented people have already done

So "Deep in Vogue" is a better song than "Vogue"?

by Anonymousreply 69August 31, 2014 2:20 AM

One thing is that early Madonna seemed to be enjoying herself.

by Anonymousreply 70August 31, 2014 2:22 AM

And there's nothing more pathetic than an adult thinking it's clever to call people, "stans."

by Anonymousreply 71August 31, 2014 2:22 AM

[quote]And there's nothing more pathetic than an adult thinking it's clever to call people, "stans."

Actually there is - sad old gays of a certain age spending their time defending an old cunt who wouldn't give you the time of day if you ever crossed paths with her in real life.

by Anonymousreply 72August 31, 2014 2:26 AM

And yet it's not quite as sad as someone who spends so much energy "hating" someone and spending all their time on a thread bitching about someone they can't stand.

by Anonymousreply 73August 31, 2014 2:30 AM

R67 has obviously never attended a live Madonna concert. She is ALL lungs and sometimes she coughs or swears into the microphone if something is wrong.

But when she is doing cartwheels, roundoffs and back flips, she probably does use a background voice track. Who wouldn't?

by Anonymousreply 74August 31, 2014 2:36 AM

R72, I think if any of us ever met Queen Madonna, the last thing we would ask of her would be the time of day.

by Anonymousreply 75August 31, 2014 2:37 AM

But what does all of this have to do with Janet's new album coming out that we are all anxiously awaiting and which was confirmed by her engineer and housekeeper, Juanita?

by Anonymousreply 76August 31, 2014 2:39 AM

Whether she sings live or not, it does matter - either way she sounds like shit.

Old has-been cunt.

by Anonymousreply 77August 31, 2014 2:41 AM

R77 is having a fop attack. Move over, Joan.

by Anonymousreply 78August 31, 2014 2:45 AM

Vadge stans are an embarrassment to the gay community.

by Anonymousreply 79August 31, 2014 2:54 AM

The "gay community" R79? Are you telegraphing your message in morse code from the 80s?

by Anonymousreply 80August 31, 2014 3:00 AM

R74, I've seen every tour in person except for The Virgin Tour and the Girlie Show. She's all smoke and mirrors, lipsynching to to a pre-recorded "live" vocal track which she will occasionally sing on top of (and, usually, badly). Yes, her mic is on but she's not singing into it. Yes, its a good show but don't be a fool. She's nit "all lungs"; she's no powerhouse vocalist and if she's your definition of one, you have very low standards.

by Anonymousreply 81August 31, 2014 3:05 AM

R68/79 must lead such a miserable life. Posting endlessly about some pop singer who has no clue he even exists.

I mean I loathe the Kardashians but I don't post over and over about them.

That is a sign of mental illness and obsession.

by Anonymousreply 82August 31, 2014 3:07 AM

R68 is simply a lonely and lost soul in this world who has turned to trolldom to make a mark on it.

by Anonymousreply 83August 31, 2014 3:23 AM

Worst use of Graham contractions ever.

by Anonymousreply 84August 31, 2014 5:15 PM

I'm sure Madonna would be pleased with the passion she incites on DL. Both positive and negative.

the lyrics of "Lucky Star" are quite shitty and kiddie-esque. Her vocals are weak as well. Why is there a thread celebrating this shit?

by Anonymousreply 87September 1, 2014 3:02 AM

Because Madonna is an icon.

by Anonymousreply 88September 1, 2014 3:07 AM

an icon of garbage, sure

by Anonymousreply 89September 1, 2014 3:12 AM

R87, it was a hit pop and dance tune. Obviously, you don't dance.
