Celebrity encounters your parents had....

My Parents honeymooned in NYC in 1956. My mother had been there several times before with her girlfriends but now with my Dad she could go places a woman alone couldn't or shouldn't go.

They ended up at a drag show and it was clear the men in the place were gay. To my Dad's credit he agreed to stay for a bit, but they left after a half an hour or so. After they left, my said to my Dad that she swore she saw Rock Hudson in there with a much younger man. My Dad brushed her off and I recall a few times growing up hearing my Dad say to my Mom at parties "Stop telling the Rock Hudson story... It wasn't him"

When Rock Hudson came out my Dad said ;Holy Shit!" and my Mom said "See?"

by Anonymousreply 132November 26, 2020 8:13 PM

My dad, a native New Yorker, saw Sophia Loren in Bloomingdales back in the 60s. He said she remains one of the most beautiful women he's ever seen...

He also dated a model who'd take him to parties hosted by Mick Jagger and Miles Davis...

by Anonymousreply 1August 26, 2014 11:20 PM

Truly bottom of the barrel.

by Anonymousreply 2August 26, 2014 11:21 PM

my father partied with motlety crue in new jersey back in the 80's! He also went to school with several pro athletes, played background for prince in studio, introduced me to Peter Mayhew(Chewbacca, guy has MASSIVE hands). Now he works at a hotel so celebrities stop by every now and then, said Vijay singh's wife is a massive bitch.

by Anonymousreply 3August 27, 2014 12:08 AM

Ah, Sofia. Now that is a celebrity/actress I'd love to meet. I'll bet she is just as beautiful today as she was in the 60s. Love me some Loren.

by Anonymousreply 4August 27, 2014 12:10 AM

Not my parents, but my great-great-great grandfather saw Luise Rainer as a teenager at Napoleon's coronation. She looked so young.

by Anonymousreply 5August 27, 2014 12:19 AM

Julia Child was a client of the firm my father worked for so he would see her on occasion. He knew Bobby Kennedy socially -- said he was the coldest bastard he's ever met.

by Anonymousreply 6August 27, 2014 12:23 AM

Jazz singer Anita O'Day sat next to my father in a joint where she was performing in NYC and asked him if he had a joint. He didn't.

by Anonymousreply 7August 27, 2014 12:27 AM

R5 Thank you for the best laugh I've had in quite a while.

by Anonymousreply 8August 27, 2014 12:33 AM

Don't know how true this is since my Dad may have spent most of his Army tenure drunk but he said he met Gloria Grahame in either Paris or Germany while he served toward the end of the Korean war. He said she was doing some kind of entertaining the troops that all the stars did in the 40's. After the show, she sat down w/my dad and his friends and had a few drinks. He said, and still does to this day, she was breathtakingly beautiful.

by Anonymousreply 9August 27, 2014 12:39 AM

My parents met Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton at a party. Months later my father was going on and on about the gorgeousness of Taylor. When he was finished someone asked "What about Burton?" and my father said, "Oh, he's a little pockmarked guy."

by Anonymousreply 10August 27, 2014 1:05 AM

My father...during WWII...was in Europe as a medic...said Merle Oberon visited a hospital he was working in to greet the wounded soldiers....said she was in a yellow suit and was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen

by Anonymousreply 11August 27, 2014 1:10 AM

My dad offered to pick up Grace Kelly at the Denver airport when she was performing in live theatre back in the early '50s. My parents married a few years later and, every so often, my dad would mention Kelly like he had a chance with her and my mother would roll her eyes.

by Anonymousreply 12August 27, 2014 1:22 AM

My Grandfather ran a cafe in a small town. One year a barnstormer named Slim who was giving rides during the county fair clipped the corner of the grandstand with his wing and wrecked his plane.

While he was working on repairing it, he would wander down to the cafe just as my Grandfather was opening up, and they would talk while the coffee brewed and the stove heated up. The flyer wanted his eggs cooked a special way, so about the 3rd morning my grandfather told him to come on back and cook them himself. My Grandfather always called eggs cooked that way "Eggs a la Slim."

A few years later my Grandfather opened the paper and read that that nice young man, Slim Lindbergh, who hit the grandstand with his plane had flown the Atlantic and landed in Paris.

by Anonymousreply 13August 27, 2014 1:22 AM

My Mom and Dad had dinner regularly with Sinatra at Jilly's in Palm Springs. They were close to his Mom, Dolly.

by Anonymousreply 14August 27, 2014 2:29 AM

My former brother-in-law (almost old enough to be my father) was a small time rock & roller. he once was on a bill with Johnny Mathis. Mathis' bodyguard/majordomo told him that among other things he looked for boys for Mathis.

by Anonymousreply 15August 27, 2014 3:54 AM

My Dad came back wounded from WW2 and the Army doctors noticed he'd stopped talking so sent him to acting school in LA as part of his rehab, so we knew tons of working actors (and one or two stars.)

The funny thing is, Dad never talked much, anyway -- it had nothing to do with the war.

by Anonymousreply 16August 27, 2014 4:16 AM

My mother stood in line for concert tickets, and Catherine Deneuve was in the queue. My mother was impressed because she waited like everybody else.

by Anonymousreply 17August 28, 2014 1:44 AM

I like your story R12.

by Anonymousreply 18November 22, 2014 10:32 PM

My parents went to see The Miracle Worker on Broadway and Eleanor Roosevelt was in the audience. My mother talked about it for the rest of her life.

by Anonymousreply 19November 22, 2014 10:36 PM

My mother knew Eydie Gorme, having gone to school with her. They kept in touch until my mother's death in 1986.

by Anonymousreply 20November 22, 2014 10:37 PM

My mom was a groupie who fucked Tom Jones...Not kidding.

by Anonymousreply 21November 22, 2014 10:55 PM

My dad was very close friends with JFK press secretary Pierre Salinger.

I also attended my half-brother's wedding...to Michael Learned. Had my first drink there at age twelve on a double-decker bus headed to the reception.

by Anonymousreply 22November 22, 2014 10:57 PM

My aunt was a groupie who fucked Merle Haggard.

by Anonymousreply 23November 22, 2014 10:59 PM

My mother was on an elevator and Sammy Davis Junior got in. My mom didn't know who it was and actually was leery of the little guy slinking in the corner of the elevator.

My parents were also in the same hotel as KISS and ate dinner by them one night, there were women all over the place and my dad got an eye full.

by Anonymousreply 24November 22, 2014 11:02 PM

My aunt got fucked by one of the Monkeys in the 60's. Can't remember his name. The short, dead one. Gonna text her now & harass her about it.

by Anonymousreply 25November 22, 2014 11:14 PM

r25, Davy Jones was adorable back then. If you are serious, she was lucky.

by Anonymousreply 26November 22, 2014 11:52 PM

My mother and aunt approached Frank Sinatra and Lauren Bacall sitting at a banquette in a Las Vegas hotel in 1958. Sinatra was cool about the intrusion, Bacall was annoyed. As they were leaving, my aunt said to her. "You look lovely tonight, Miss Bacall", to which Bacall icily responded, "Well, I try.".

by Anonymousreply 27November 23, 2014 12:02 AM

My dad was a TWA airline pilot. He flew Cary Grant and Betsy Drake on their honeymoon and then Cary Grant and Dyan Cannon on their honeymoon. He said Grant was a real charmer was fascinated with flying.

He also met Barry Goldwater who was equally fascinated with flying. So many people back then thought flying an airliner was magical.

He said Johnny Carson was an ass when he was loaded and Telly Savalas was super shy. No surprise here but Dionne Warwick was a hateful shit to everyone and actually called a black cabin attendant a n*gg*r.

Also my dad had some planes for charter and said John Sabastion left a blunt in the ashtray.

by Anonymousreply 28November 23, 2014 12:25 AM

At 17 years-old, on a dreary morning in early 1945, my father was hitchhiking down Wilshire Blvd, from his dentist's office in Westwood Village to University High School. (Apparently, this was commonplace during the WWII, and it was considered one's patriotic duty to offer rides to hitchhikers). A car pulled over, the driver leaned over & cranked down the window, and asked, "Where are you headed, son?"

It was Fred MacMurray. Double Indemnity had come out a few months earlier, which my dad LOVED (his all-time favorite movie), so he was a little star-struck. He said, "Uni High", and Fred immediately told him to get in, drove him to school that morning. They made small talk, and my dad complimented him about Double Indemnity....and said he was just a really nice, gracious man.

by Anonymousreply 29November 23, 2014 5:05 AM

[quote]My mother stood in line for concert tickets, and Catherine Deneuve was in the queue. My mother was impressed because she waited like everybody else.

I don't know why, but I laughed at this.

It's practically a non story, yet, it says so much about your mother, and Deneuve. Was this in Paris?

by Anonymousreply 30November 23, 2014 3:42 PM

No, Lisbon. When there's endemic corruption, people with connections don't wait in line. Everything is done for them.

Deneuve is known for not making a fuss when she's in public places, and never behaving like a prima donna. She's very respected and appreciated for that.

As for my mother, well, I'm glad you have so much to say...

by Anonymousreply 31November 23, 2014 4:25 PM

I don't like to boast but when we finally arrive at a thread about nice celebrity encounters your great great great great great great great grandparents... well... Shakespeare. And wait til I tell you about what he did in the bog! Can't wait!

by Anonymousreply 32November 23, 2014 4:28 PM

My uncle was murdered in the early fifties by a crazy silent film star.

by Anonymousreply 33November 23, 2014 4:30 PM

My mother met Yves Saint Laurent while vacationing in Morocco. He invited her for drinks at his villa -- she was a stylish and charming woman and they had acquaintencess in common. She went with a friend, they had champagne and wine, but Saint Laurent seemed moody and distracted. Without excusing himself he left to go upstairs without saying goodbye. Soon my mother and her friend were ushered out. Usually something like this might offend her but she said she could see he was very troubled and unhappy.

by Anonymousreply 34November 23, 2014 4:43 PM

Did you see the Bonello movie, R34?

by Anonymousreply 35November 23, 2014 4:47 PM

No, I wanted to but missed it. Have always been fascinated by him and intrigued by this odd encounter with my mom...

by Anonymousreply 36November 23, 2014 4:53 PM

R21, please dish on Tom Jones. What did you mom have to say?

by Anonymousreply 37November 23, 2014 5:09 PM

Do watch it, R34. It will definitely echo with this encounter you speak of.

by Anonymousreply 38November 23, 2014 5:11 PM

[quote]As for my mother, well, I'm glad you have so much to say...

Well, I didn't say anything about your mother, but I think it's kind of sweet that she took notice of someone's down to earth behavior. I know I do.

As far as Deneuve goes, there's a video on You Tube of someone stopping her in the street, late at night, and asking her about a play or a movie she may have just seen. Deneuve has a conversation with the person who stopped her, perfectly happy to chat, and then she and her companion keep walking.

by Anonymousreply 39November 23, 2014 5:20 PM

My mother was a model in the St Louis and Chicago area in the 1950s and 1960s. Apparently, at a gallery event, Coral Browne hit on her. My mother confessed this to me in the 1990s and said, bless her heart, "I don't think Vincent Price KNEW the kind of woman he married!"

She also was hired to be an usher (or something similar) at an event Elvis was at, but would never talk about it. My aunt told me it was the 1960s and she can be seen in one of those pictures of Elvis surrounded by hot ladies with teased hair, but I've never seen the photo.

by Anonymousreply 40November 23, 2014 5:32 PM

Guessing your mother didn't know about Vincent Price's own flaming ways, R40.

by Anonymousreply 41November 23, 2014 5:41 PM

R40 I hope this will finally lay to rest the theory of a small number of DLers who refuse to believe that Vincent Price and Corale Browne had a lavender marriage.

by Anonymousreply 42November 23, 2014 5:50 PM

My father met June Allyson while in the Navy during WW2 and maintained his boyish crush on her forever. I felt so bad for him when she began to do the Depends ads on TV, because it must have made him feel very old. My parents went to Morocco for the famed Malcolm Forbes party(when he was "courting" Elizabeth Taylor) back in the early 90s. They couldn't stop talking about it for months. It was like a mini-Oscars red carpet.

by Anonymousreply 43November 23, 2014 5:54 PM

My step-father went to the same NYC Dentist as Greta Garbo. The Dentist was an old friend so he scheduled the appointments right after each other. Dad was thrilled, and after a few visits, spoke to her a bit in the waiting room. He said she was very kind and shy.

by Anonymousreply 44November 23, 2014 6:08 PM

My parents met Bubby Brister (has-been former Steelers QB). They said he was a douche.

by Anonymousreply 45November 23, 2014 6:17 PM

My great uncle was an extraordinarily handsome Greek man. He had an affair with Marlene Dietrich while serving in World War II.

by Anonymousreply 46November 23, 2014 6:24 PM

A childhood friend told me his mother was a telephone operator who once listened in on a conversation between Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme but wouldn't reveal what she'd heard.

by Anonymousreply 47November 23, 2014 6:25 PM

My uncle was a bunkmate of Tyrone Power's during part of his time in the Marines. Tyrone had a picture of his wife, the French one, on a desk. My uncle thought she was a "dish." Once, he was looking at it, and he must have been staring at it because Power said to him, "Will you please stop ogling my wife!" The two of them laughed it off later and got to be friends. My uncle said people would send Power all kinds of stuff, mostly food, from all over the world, and he'd just leave it for the rest of the guys.

by Anonymousreply 48November 23, 2014 6:35 PM

Not huge, but when I was in my 20s in the 1970s, I worked at a summer theatre where some of our guests were Bob Hope, Lou Rawls, Tom Jones and Abby Lane. I was star struck at the time.

by Anonymousreply 49November 23, 2014 6:45 PM

My uncle was a nurse in an nyc hospital. Some of the memorable encounters he had were Eluzabeth Taylor (nice but very short) and Joan Kennedy (out of it). My uncle's "roommate" was in the literary field and through the "roommate" met Jackie O. My uncle said she was nice enough, but did not speak in the breathy voice at all.

by Anonymousreply 50November 23, 2014 6:49 PM

My mother was an X-ray tech in the 70s in Boston and dealt with some celebs from time to time,

The memorable ones :

Cher was sick and came to get checked out. Very down-to-earth and easy to deal with

Joan Rivers was also there once. Very nice and friendly but she kept talking and making jokes so everything took way longer than it should have

Carl Sagan...piece of shit. Very arrogant and demanding and pulled the "don't you know who I am?" line

by Anonymousreply 51November 23, 2014 6:53 PM

Oh yeah, I just remembered. Dolores Hope came with Bob Hope to perform.

by Anonymousreply 52November 23, 2014 6:56 PM

by Anonymousreply 53November 23, 2014 7:14 PM

In the late 60's Robert Wagner tried to pick up my father at a golf club bar in Palm Springs.

by Anonymousreply 54November 24, 2014 12:22 AM

My mom made out with LeVar Burton in the 80's.

by Anonymousreply 55November 24, 2014 12:27 AM

Christopher Plummer tried to pick up my uncle in a NYC bar in the early 1960's.

by Anonymousreply 56November 24, 2014 12:33 AM

My dad met Clint Eastwood at a ski lodge. That was a man crush right there.

by Anonymousreply 57November 24, 2014 12:34 AM

No, R2, that would be the Asperger's thread.

by Anonymousreply 58November 24, 2014 12:40 AM

I think this is a fun, cool thread!

by Anonymousreply 59November 24, 2014 12:47 AM

My father had some sort of delivery job when he was young. One delivery was to Joan Crawford in Manhattan. Her tip...one of those cheap Pepsi logo pens. Ballpoint pens might have been a big deal at the time. It was in the family junk draw for years.

Both parents recognized Barbra Streisand on the Ed Sullivan show as the girl who used to work the register at the Chinese restaurant around the corner on Nostrand. They always said, "she was odd."

by Anonymousreply 60November 24, 2014 12:50 AM

My parents were at some sort of dinner in England, and my pregnant mother sat next to Cornel Wilde. That night, she miscarried and always said it was because of him. Never could tell if she was serious or not-not that she would joke about a miscarriage. She was a big fan of his.

by Anonymousreply 61November 24, 2014 12:58 AM

And for you dumbasses who don't seem to understand what gossip is, you are reading it.

by Anonymousreply 62November 24, 2014 1:23 AM

My grandfather was a Chicago-based singer & local TV personality in the 1950's & 1960's, before eventually moving into theater & theater production. He's now 82 years young & has a story about every famous person he worked with or crossed paths with during his 60+ years in show business. Those include Lawrence Welk, Howard Keel, Arthur Godfrey, Tommy Tune, Patti Page & just about every name entertainer who happened to come through the Chicago/Milwaukee Area in the 1950's through 1970's.

During the first phase of his career he was a 19 / 20 year old baritone for Mercury Records. In 1954 Mercury sent him on a coast to coast publicity tour to visit certain powerful Radio DJ's, so he could promote his very first recordings. One of which was 'Here's What I'm Here For' (from "A Star Is Born"). While in California, at one such performance/meet & greet he had a brief meeting with Judy Garland! Who of course had introduced 'Here's What I'm Here For' & had her own competing version released on Columbia Records (B side to 'The Man That Got Away') at the time. She complimented him on what a handsome, strapping young man he was (he's 6'4) & said she loved what he did with 'He's What I'm Here For'. She even had him autograph a copy of his 45rpm single for her! Over the last 60 years he's never forgotten what a warm, funny & gracious lady she was to a young, up & coming vocalist.

GrandPop also worked with Jaye P. Morgan several times during the 60's, when they performed in several Summer Stock productions together. Those productions included "Fanny", "The Unsinkable Molly Brown" & "Annie Get Your Gun". He says that Jaye was exactly what you would expect. A cool, sassy & tough broad with a heart of gold. She also loved using salty language & telling the occasional blue joke. One thing he remembers is that Jaye was DEATHLY afraid of bugs to the point of phobia & would occasionally freeze up on the Summer Stock stage if she spotted a critter near her. He'd have to use his improvisation skills to kill the bug without the audience seeing, so she could continue. LOL.

I'll get more stories the next time I speak to him.

by Anonymousreply 63November 24, 2014 1:34 AM

I've posted the firs story on DL before, but. . . .

When my mother was at Smith College she went on a double date, and Jane Fonda was the other girl on the date. Mom said JF was very pretty, bored, slightly rude, and had a fabulous figure. Jane and her date sat in the car's front seat, Mom and her date in the back. That clearly rankled with Mom, who always mentions it in the story.

My Aunt: -Robert Kennedy scoped her out and tried to pick her up on a flight to the Cape in the 60s. My aunt was a tall, blonde ex-Vassar model. A well-brought up bad girl and RK was well into that. But my aunt was on her way to meet another married man, so she said no. -Was at a party with Diana Ross in the 70s. She said DR was a normal-looking (tho scary skinny) woman with the best make-up job she's ever seen. Shade! -Had a job interview with Barbara Walters in the 70s. BW was all about how fortunate my aunt would be to work for her. My aunt wasn't so sure about that, even before she was told that this marvelous opportunity would be unpaid. My aunt walked, of course. -Was at a dinner party with Albert Finney in the 70s. She said he was gorgeous, very very naughty, charming, a bit angry about everything, and a heartbreaker. They got hammered, but some woman showed up late and dragged him out of there. My aunt is still pissed about that.

There are more, but can't remember them now.

by Anonymousreply 64November 24, 2014 1:42 AM

That's okay, R63.

by Anonymousreply 65November 24, 2014 1:42 AM

Fuck you, R65. LOL

by Anonymousreply 66November 24, 2014 1:45 AM

[quote]R54

Guess why Tina Sinatra broke off their engagement in the early 70s ?

by Anonymousreply 67November 24, 2014 2:04 AM

So, R64, who's car was it? Seems like the owner of the car would sit in the front seat with his date and the other couple would sit in back. Why was your mom irritated?

by Anonymousreply 68November 24, 2014 2:13 AM

r63, does your Grandfather remember meeting Helen Reddy in the late 60s?

by Anonymousreply 69November 24, 2014 2:18 AM

I chatted with Helen Reddy last year.

by Anonymousreply 70November 24, 2014 2:21 AM

R69 , if she did local theater or summer stock in Chicago or Milwaukee during that time he probably does.

by Anonymousreply 71November 24, 2014 2:49 AM

Helen Reddy = 70s. He'd remember if he had to deal with her and her asshole husband, Jeff Wald. They made scenes all over the world, which may be why she rapidly came to have no career (that and her shitty nasal voice).

by Anonymousreply 72November 24, 2014 3:03 AM

My aunt was a rock groupie back in the 80's, very blonde, skinny, and pretty and slept with Vince Neil of Motley Crue. My mom had to go to the hotel to pick her up afterwards cuz Vince threw her out after he was done with her. In the freezing cold at 2 a.m.! My mom said my aunt was crying hysterically.

Another 80's Crue story: when they were just starting out as an opening group they were in Providence, Rhode Island and my uncle ran into them in a bar; both Tommy Lee and Nikki Sixx. He said they were both cool but kind of in shock that the town was so lame and there was nothing to do.

by Anonymousreply 73November 24, 2014 3:06 AM

Julie Christie at the Gandhi shrine in LA ca. release of Dr. Zhivago. My mom was 8 years younger than JC.

by Anonymousreply 74November 24, 2014 3:17 AM

[quote]I chatted with Helen Reddy last year.

Care to elaborate?

by Anonymousreply 75November 24, 2014 4:41 AM

[quote]Helen Reddy = 70s. He'd remember if he had to deal with her and her asshole husband, Jeff Wald. They made scenes all over the world, which may be why she rapidly came to have no career (that and her shitty nasal voice).

She was in Chicago in the late 60s. Her husband, Jeff Wald, was the asshole. He killed her career after their divorce by threatening people in the music industry.

by Anonymousreply 76November 24, 2014 4:43 AM

"Guess why Tina Sinatra broke off their engagement in the early 70s ?"

I don't recall Tina and RJ ever being officially engaged, just dating.

by Anonymousreply 77November 24, 2014 9:07 AM

Great stuff, R63. I wonder if my mom and your uncle ever ran into each other?

by Anonymousreply 78November 24, 2014 10:10 AM

My dad was at the airport in Westchester, NY. He saw a chauffeur driven car parked near one of the places where people disembarked.

He walked over to the car and tapped on the window. Marilyn Monroe rolled down the window and my dad stood there awestruck.

She told him she was waiting for Joe (DiMaggio) to arrive. He asked for her autograph and carried it with him til the day he died. I now have it tucked away in a safe place.

by Anonymousreply 79November 24, 2014 11:09 AM

Didn't any of your parents ever meet me?

by Anonymousreply 80November 24, 2014 11:27 AM

My uncle was an interior designer and friends with someone with access to the house where Sharon Tate et al were murdered. Apparently his friend, also an interior designer, had been asked to take a look at the place for a possible buyer to see what could be done with the house.

He said that the house had been cleaned of course but the zebra skin rug that is featured prominently in many of the photos was still there. It had been cleaned but it wasn't thrown away like most everything else.

by Anonymousreply 81November 24, 2014 11:27 AM

They met Liberace after seeing him at the Palmer House in Chicago.

They met Al Hirt at the airport in New Orleans.

by Anonymousreply 82November 24, 2014 11:46 AM

My dad grew up in the Hollywood Hills a couple houses from David and Rick Nelson. Although they were the super-stars of the time, to my dad they were just neighborhood kids. My dad doesn't really remember Ozzie and Harriet, as a kid really wouldn't remember too much of the neighborhood parents. Everyone knew who they were of course, but he doesn't remember interacting much with them even when going over for birthday parties etc. Also he remembers times when tourists would stand in the street and just stare at the Nelson's house. (Later Ari Gold's house on Entourage) Dad says he remembers David and Rick always moaning about having to go to work.

by Anonymousreply 83November 24, 2014 12:25 PM

My dad and mom were a hot couple living in the west village in the 60s. Dad was an artist and my mom was modeling while in grad school, so between them they had all sorts of interesting, random friends.

They were in a couple of scenes of the movie The Night They Raided Minsky's and became friendly with William Friedkin and Jason Robards. Robards had a painting of my dad's for years (don't know what became of it).

They were also photographed by David Bailey. I still have the photo.

In addition, they were great friends with Frank and Malachy McCourt, Alice Ghostley (my mom's neighbor on Gay Street), Darren McGavin and Robert Downey (Robert Downey jar's dad).

And Charles Laughton was obsessed with my dad when he was 18 and painting scenery on Broadway in the 50s. My dad liked to tell the story of going out for drinks with him and swatting his hand away as it crept up his knee under the table. Dad loved him though. Said he was a brilliant and funny man.

by Anonymousreply 84November 24, 2014 12:50 PM

My dad was a customs inspector in the late 60's and early 70's. He checked in a small plane arriving from Puerto Vallarta and on it were Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. He said Richard Burton was very friendly and inquisitive. Elizabeth, he didn't have many nice things to say: very aloof and not nearly as attractive as he thought she would be.

by Anonymousreply 85November 24, 2014 12:50 PM

My mom's uncle played several B'way shows, and she and my dad went backstage after seeing Bells Are Ringing. They saw Judy Holliday (wrapped in mink) after the show, and my mom said she looked so sad and lonely as she left the theater.

My dad drank with Tom Baker in a hotel bar once, during the time they were shooting Pyramids of Mars.

[quote] He knew Bobby Kennedy socially -- said he was the coldest bastard he's ever met.

Interesting since he mainly has a saintly persona. I read an account given by the proprietor of La Grenouille about an RFK visit for lunch. Bobby loudly complained about the food and was rude tot he waiter. The boorish behavior must really have stood out at such an establishment.

[quote]He killed her career after their divorce by threatening people in the music industry.

Helen Reddy's killed career -- I saw her in "Anything Goes" in Long Beach in the late 80s. The whole run was sold out. That was several years after her divorce from Jeff Wald. I saw her touring show in the mid-90s in Orlando. Sold out. I saw her show in Feb. 2013. Sold out.

What most people don't know is that she once served as the Parks and Recreation Commissioner for the state of California. A serious environmentalist, she held that job for three years.

My aunt chatted with Minnie Pearl in a restaurant back in the 50s. She said she kept looking for the price tags on her clothes, but never saw any.

by Anonymousreply 90November 24, 2014 1:37 PM

Does R2 know what an idiot he is?

I love these stories. Even the ones involving people I had to google.

by Anonymousreply 91November 24, 2014 1:54 PM

R91, right on. I don't know half the names mentioned, but it's been a fascinating read.

by Anonymousreply 92November 24, 2014 1:56 PM

Bobby Kennedy was hardly a saint. He had much more to do with the death of Marilyn Monroe than brother Jack.

After their divorce, my mom moved to L.A. and stayed with her sister (ex Playboy bunny) and her husband (low level Hollywood producer). I stayed with them one summer and besides playing ball with Jodie Foster (I was 10, she was 13) , I had gone with my mom once when she partied with members of the Eagles. I remember pretending to be asleep, and everyone was around a campfire, with all of them smoking pot and talking about how African birth control methods include splitting a penis' head such that it became a French Tickler. Charming conversation to have around a 10 year old.

There was also a dog on the premises that had its vocal cords severed so it would not bark aloud. I felt sorry for the dog- he would bark furiously and it was a curious arping sound.

What was Jodie like?

R76 he only killed her recording career.

She continued to sell out venues for years until her retirement.

She then, after 10 years came out of retirement for a mini-tour and she has sold out every venue she has appeared in.

There is talk of a new album, now that the curse of Jeff Wald is over.

Come back, R51 - details on Carl Sagan, please.

by Anonymousreply 98November 24, 2014 4:26 PM

The summer after my parents were married in the mid-60s, they went to spend a week on Cape Cod.

They were seated in a restaurant two tables away from Betty White and Allen Ludden. Apparently, Betty was performing in a play at the Cape Cod Playhouse.

My mother remembers that White and Ludden were chatting and giggling at each other, in their own little world, let's say. They were also very gracious to the waitstaff, apparently.

This truly gave my mother the impression that they were very much in love with each other and very down-to-earth.

by Anonymousreply 99November 24, 2014 5:04 PM

As a side-note, my mother tells me that Betty White had a show in the 1950s during which she would read and comment on viewer mail.

Well, my mother's letter was chosen during one episode. My mother was in the bathroom at the time and remembers my grandmother, who was watching the show, yelling with excitement, "Franny, Franny, come quick! Betty's reading your letter!"

My mother's 11 year-old self was incredulous.

by Anonymousreply 100November 24, 2014 5:16 PM

She was super nice- we played for about 10 minutes, then they called her in for a meeting (my uncle was the producer). My 10 year old self was a bit sad seeing her there, having a meeting with about 10-15 adults surrounding her. She was a kid with me, and she had to be an adult instantly with them.

by Anonymousreply 101November 24, 2014 6:13 PM

Is anyone else confused by r86?

by Anonymousreply 102November 24, 2014 6:25 PM

Great story R101. Thanks for sharing. First time I had this sort of insight into the life of a child actor, and what's more, a child star.

by Anonymousreply 103November 24, 2014 6:36 PM

Not an "encounter", but on a trip to the Xanadu Princess Resort on Grand Bahama Island with my father (who was dying of lung cancer), my Mom learned first-hand that Dad knew Howard Hughes. My mother told me of a poolside meeting where Hughes' security guards escorted my Dad to talk with his friend, and that Hughes (wrapped in white sheets) spoke with my father for almost an hour, while my mother sat on the other side of the private patio.

It turned out that during World War II, my Dad had worked on the Hughes H-4 Hercules (also known as the "Spruce Goose"). He never told this to my mom. Both Hughes and my Dad died in 1976.

by Anonymousreply 104November 24, 2014 6:40 PM

Didn't Hughes live in the Princess in Acapulco?

by Anonymousreply 108November 24, 2014 7:26 PM

I've told this before. I was invited to a cool, swanky post-theater party with my parents standing right next to me, so our gracious host invited them too. Great, so now I had to babysit my folks, who were in their early 60s at a party, with celebrities in attendance.

I got distracted for a moment, and my dad disappeared. I found him chatting away with Quentin Tarantino, practically cornering him in conversation. Although clearly puzzled by my junior-high math teacher dad, he was very gracious to him, and sent him an autographed photo, sort of as a gag. My dad was star-struck....once he found out who this Quentin Tarantino guy was.

God, that Gary was one Svengali, no?

My grandfather was stationed in California during the WWII and saw a lot of stars who visited for camp shows. He said that Bob Hope was OK, but seemed to be on autopilot, as if he was reading from a script. Rita Hayworth was sweet but ever so-slightly shy meeting soldiers while signing autographs, and Lana Turner radiated sex more than anyone he had ever seen. All the guys were bowled over by Ann Sheridan & Betty Grable not just because they were beautiful but because both of them loved bawdy, raunchy humor - "You'd never guess that from seeing their pictures!"

by Anonymousreply 119November 24, 2014 10:16 PM

My mother was a commercial artist for the Washington Post in the late 1940's (back when they drew ads by hand). She knew the political cartoonist, Herb Block (a.k.a. Herblock), who worked one floor above. She described him as a "nice, funny guy." My mother met my father, left the paper and later became an abstract painter. Herblock stayed on at the Post for 55 more years, won two more Pulitzers and apparently never married.

Ah this thread triggered another anecdote: I think it was 1983- my Dad and my 5 year old brother (who was a really cute kid) are at one of the O'Hare men's bathrooms. They see Muhammad Ali, wait until he starts to exit the bathroom and approach him . He is super gracious and friendly and adds that my brother Is a fine looking son. My Dad was really happy that one of his icons was a cool dude. I don't know if my brother remembers it.

Someone posted my grandfather's 1954 recording of 'Here's What I'm Here For' on archive.org that I mentioned years ago at R63. He's since passed on. He had a great voice.

My dad saw Steve Perry at the airport in Mexico City in the mid '80s. Said he was wearing a white suit and was with two women.

My dad worked in Silicon Valley in the 80s and spilled wine on Steve Jobs at an industry party. Said he was nice about it.

My father drove Ann Wedgeworth during the making of "Sweet Dreams", & even accidentally walked in on her changing when he first started the assignment. He always said she was as nice as could be, and down to earth.

My mom won tickets to the opening of some show in L.A. Just before the curtain rose, Tom Selleck and his wife entered the row and were squeezing past to their seats. This was at the height of his Magnum fame, and she always insisted he was the only "new" star who could match up to the old-time movie stars.

He's apparently quite tall, and said, "Excuse me" to my mom politely as he tried to get by. She must've been goggling at him, because he gave her a big smile and said "I hope you enjoy your evening."

She didn't remember the show as much as she did Tom Selleck.

kind of lame, but all I can think of.

My parents were very young newlyweds in 1950s Memphis. My mother worked at a dry cleaners and Wink Martindale was a regular customer. He was a local celebrity then, before he became a big national game show host.

Apparently he always flirted with my mother and would tell her she should go into show business. I didn't find that out until I was a little kid in the 70s and my dad would always complain when I watched Tic Tac Dough, and he would call Wink "Stink Fartindale."

I asked my mom if she crushed on Wink back in those days, and she was just like "Have you ever SEEN your father??" Sigh. My parents were very good looking people. I was an "oops" baby so didn't get as many years with them as my (much) older siblings got. I miss them terribly.

Sort of an encounter, when I was a kid I use to hang out with my friend at his divorced father's apt on the weekends one day we saw a negligee hanging in the bathroom and he asked his dad "whos dress is this?" and he said he met William Shatner's mother yesterday. Years later we figured out he fucked Capt. Kirk's mom.

My Dad met Charo in Las Vegas. We still have the picture somewhere.

by Anonymousreply 129November 26, 2020 1:43 PM

My mom as a tot in the 30's went up to Gene Autry with a piece of paper and said, "here". I still have that autograph somewhere.

My mom's friend's father worked for John Wayne on his ranch, so my mom met him several times as a child. We have an old family movie (on film) of us standing around him while she reminisced with him as an adult.

Not a celebrity, but a somewhat notable figure of history: my father, after his high school graduation, got a job delivering groceries in Fort Worth, TX. This was from 1957-ish to 1960. He regularly delivered to Marguerite Oswald, Lee Harvey’s mother. Said she was a nice lady. If we were in the general area, we would drive by the house where she lived. He could also pick out the house where Ginger Rogers grew up, lol.

Love this thread. I see it was bumped after 6 years for a good reason.

Anyway, only on Datalounge would you see "Vijay singh's wife is a massive bitch" and the name Bubby Brister in the same thread.

In 1986 I went to a pre-season game with my Uncle and his son-in-law at RFK Stadium, in DC. The Rs were playing the Steelers. The crowd went bonkers when Bubby Brister was announced as taking over for Mark Malone, who wasn't that great either. WTF is a Bubby and why is he on an NFL playing field? It is the only time I have ever been inside a NFL Stadium. so I remember it vividly. Well that and the massive fight in the field level stands behind the goal posts.

My mother's brush with a celeb was with a guy mentioned up thread. Al Hirt. She worked for a well respected Doctor and Al was a patient of his. That is all.
