Movies never released on DVD

Great list from BuzzFeed with some titles I've never even heard of - the Hollywood series is all on YouTube though and sounds fantastic.

Top of my wish list that they don't mention is Ken Russell's The Devils... Oh and Looking For Mr Goodbar

There is a weird span of 80s-90s stuff that seems to be disappearing though, since it came out on VHS and that's it.

What else?

Ken Russell's Valentino

"At Long Last Love" is now on Blu-ray.

Come back to the five and dime Jimmy Dean Jimmy Dean

by Anonymousreply 4August 23, 2014 3:42 AM

Last of Shelia

by Anonymousreply 5August 23, 2014 3:45 AM

"The Last of Sheila" is on Warner DVD, has been for years. WITH commentary from Dyan Cannon and Raquel Welch (in separate rooms, ha).

What was the big indie hit that Danny Huston starred in years ago that folks predicted an Oscar nom that didn't happen? Nowhere on DVD or anywhere else that I have seen.

by Anonymousreply 6August 23, 2014 4:54 AM

SONG OF THE SOUTH!

by Anonymousreply 7August 23, 2014 4:59 AM

"Fatso" is very hard to find on DVD, and it goes for $80 or more on Amazon when you do find it! For such a popular, and enduring cult movie which people seem to love, you'd think it would be easily available. It wasn't even on VHS for many years. Odd.

by Anonymousreply 8August 23, 2014 5:02 AM

The Devils and The Go-Between have never been released in the US. And of course, Looking for Mr. Goodbar.

by Anonymousreply 9August 23, 2014 5:15 AM

I was going to list "Fedora" by Billy Wilder and when I went to seek out a trailer, I saw that it is finally coming out in October. It's a guilty pleasure.

"Looking for Mr. Goodbar" is a puzzler especially since Paramount keeps releasing old flicks like 'Harry Kellerman", etc. (*odd in itself as the DVD market is drying up). "Goodbar" came out on VHS I remember when THAT market was drying up too.

Would be an ideal candidate for a Criterion Collection title. A true classic and, oddly, not dated save for the obvious disco stuff.

by Anonymousreply 11August 23, 2014 5:37 AM

Sorry to disappoint you, R10, but that trailer was for a cinema reissue in 2013. No plans for a DVD release of Fedora anytime soon.

by Anonymousreply 12August 23, 2014 5:39 AM

Cineaste Lou Lumenick, who is also one of the film critics for the NY Post, has devoted THREE columns in recent weeks to films not on DVD - a total of about THREE HUNDRED titles he has found are not available:

I'd like to see Yentle with separate commentary from Barbra, Mandy, and Amy.

by Anonymousreply 14August 23, 2014 5:53 AM

The Reincarnation of Peter Proud. Dark Secret of Harvest Home. Letty Lytton.

by Anonymousreply 15August 23, 2014 5:54 AM

R12) If you enjoy it also, it's coming out this fall and Amazon has it on pre-order. I also liked the score to this film. As a person who likes soundtracks, I wish more of these would be reissued as well. "The Reincarnation of Peter Proud" is a favourite. On that note, I read somewhere that a reason "Looking for Mr Goodbar" is not available is the music rights.

I don't think "Freud" with Montgomery Clift, by John Huston, was on DVD. Is it now?

by Anonymousreply 17August 23, 2014 6:12 AM

There is an old TV movie with Jane Fonda called the Dollmaker that I wish I could find on DVD. Also Superstar the Karen Carpenter story which will never be put on DVD.

by Anonymousreply 18August 23, 2014 6:16 AM

"The Devils" is available

by Anonymousreply 19August 23, 2014 6:26 AM

When will they release the Classic Pia Zadora film the Lonely Lady on dvd???

by Anonymousreply 20August 23, 2014 8:48 AM

Dawson's 100 Load Weekend

by Anonymousreply 21August 23, 2014 9:10 AM

Valentino was released on DVD in the UK in 2008. It was Region 2 and is now unavailable. I have it, there's a ton of nudity in it including full frontals of Nureyev.

by Anonymousreply 22August 23, 2014 12:16 PM

Something for Everyone with Angela Lansbury and Michael York has never been released on DVD to my knowledge.

by Anonymousreply 23August 23, 2014 12:23 PM

R11 "Looking For Mr Goodbar" hasn't been released to Dvd yet because of licensing of all that DISCO music.

by Anonymousreply 24August 23, 2014 12:27 PM

Just about any film not yet released on DVD can be found in bootleg form on iOffer.com.

by Anonymousreply 27August 23, 2014 12:43 PM

"The Blue Veil", a tearjerker from the early 1950's starring Jane Wyman. Multiple Oscar nominee, including Jane for Best Actress, yet never released on VHS or DVD.

by Anonymousreply 28August 23, 2014 12:45 PM

"Play It as It Lays" from the Joan Didion novel and starring Tuesday Weld, Tony Perkins and Tammy Grimes.

by Anonymousreply 29August 23, 2014 12:46 PM

"The Diary of a Mad Housewife"

by Anonymousreply 30August 23, 2014 12:47 PM

""Looking For Mr Goodbar" hasn't been released to Dvd yet because of licensing of all that DISCO music."

How were they able to release it on VHS?

by Anonymousreply 31August 23, 2014 12:48 PM

I've never found "Come back to the five and dime, James Dean, James Dean" . . . perhaps I don't have that title correct, but . . .

by Anonymousreply 32August 23, 2014 1:52 PM

A decent copy of Bergman's Face to Face

by Anonymousreply 33August 23, 2014 1:56 PM

Song of Fucking Norway, damn it.

by Anonymousreply 34August 23, 2014 2:08 PM

"The Mother and the Whore": it was voted the second greatest French movie by critics there, but is near impossible to find here in the States. A VHS copy from Japan goes for $100 or more.

by Anonymousreply 35August 23, 2014 3:14 PM

Celine and Julie Go Boating

The Lost Moment (with Susan Hayward and Agnes Moorhead)

Both of them, oddly enough, are based on Henry James novels.

by Anonymousreply 36August 23, 2014 3:20 PM

Diane Keaton's "Looking for Mr. Goodbar".

by Anonymousreply 37August 23, 2014 3:22 PM

[quote]"Looking For Mr Goodbar" hasn't been released to Dvd yet because of licensing of all that DISCO music."

It was available for digital rental a couple of years ago, but not now.

"Diane Keaton's "Looking for Mr. Goodbar"."

Excuse me?

by Anonymousreply 39August 23, 2014 3:25 PM

That long-buried porno Marie Osmond made, "I'm a Little Bit Cunty."

by Anonymousreply 40August 23, 2014 3:31 PM

Uhm, i think you mean "Going Coconuts"

by Anonymousreply 41August 23, 2014 4:34 PM

I don't know about movies, but I would like to see TV series "I'll Fly Away" and "A Year in the Life" come out on DVD.

by Anonymousreply 42August 23, 2014 4:36 PM

I would kill for A Year in the Life on DVD.

by Anonymousreply 43August 23, 2014 4:39 PM

Go Naked in the World

by Anonymousreply 44August 23, 2014 4:41 PM

Excuse ME, R39.

by Anonymousreply 45August 23, 2014 4:48 PM

My favorite episode had Wendy Phillips blowing out the candle on her birthday cupcake, R44. She was celebrating her birthday alone and felt okay about it.

by Anonymousreply 46August 23, 2014 4:53 PM

For Region 1, R19? I know of the 2012 BFI release, but I can only find bootlegs in the US.

by Anonymousreply 47August 23, 2014 5:11 PM

"A Little Night Music" with Liz Taylor and Diana Rigg. Was released on laserdisc, but no DVD.

by Anonymousreply 48August 23, 2014 5:22 PM

R31 The music rights have to be renegotiated every time a film comes out on a different platform. Like VHS, DVD etc. Paramount would have to get permission and pay all the artists who's music was in the film again. There might be some reluctance on the part of one or more artists to have their music included in the film. Hence why it has never been released on disc. I recorded on comcast on demand a few years ago on VHS. But hopefully it will get a blu ray soon if paramount can come to terms and get the rights again to all the music.

Raintree County still hasn't been released on DVD. It's weird how such a big production with some big names in it is pretty much forgotten today.

by Anonymousreply 55August 23, 2014 7:20 PM

I'm still waiting for the DVD of "Hold Back The Dawn" starring Olivia de Havilland and Charles Boyer. It was nominated for 6 oscars (including best picture) and written by Billy Wilder but for some reason Universal released the DVD only in Europe.

by Anonymousreply 56August 23, 2014 7:31 PM

"Rosie" starring Rosalind Russell and Sandra Dee. And updated version of "King Lear" written by Ruth Gordon.

Great fun.

by Anonymousreply 57August 23, 2014 7:43 PM

R11 I would love to have a LOOKING FOR MR. GOODBAR on DVD in the right widescreen ratio. I wonder if the problem is getting the rights to all the great disco era songs that were used in the film? Even though the songs were on the old VHS tape, it's a whole new ball game when it comes to music rights for a digital release.

by Anonymousreply 58August 23, 2014 7:45 PM

R48 A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC was released on DVD a few years ago. May be out of print now.

by Anonymousreply 59August 23, 2014 7:48 PM

ELVIRA MADIGAN ---beautiful color film from Sweden

BUSTER AND BILLIE with Jan Michael-Vincent at his hunkiest. He has a full frontal nude scene at the old swimming hole.

Love with a Proper Stranger with Natalie Wood, Steve McQueen need a proper distribution on BluRay

by Anonymousreply 63August 23, 2014 8:07 PM

Cool, cool, cool R61, thanks. Directed by Jethro from the Beverly Hillbillies, no less.

"I am a crime against nature!" or whatever he bleats (but it got to me back then... loved Robbie Benson always).

by Anonymousreply 66March 26, 2018 2:53 AM

On a related note: I wanted to replace my VHS of Prospero's Books with the DVD version. The Amazon reviews of the DVD are so uniformly negative that I've kept the VHS which I think is good quality.

by Anonymousreply 67March 26, 2018 1:08 PM

Night of dark shadows restored what happened to this? You can get the edited version. But it was supposed to be restored including all the cut footage.

by Anonymousreply 68March 26, 2018 1:42 PM

The one I have on the OP list is the Hollywood series about silent movies. I must have got my set of DVDs from a collector. I love that series. So many valuable interviews.

by Anonymousreply 69March 26, 2018 1:52 PM

The Mattei Affair.

Great film. Never been released on DVD, as far as I know.

by Anonymousreply 70March 26, 2018 2:11 PM

Nice to see that over the years since this thread was started, that several of these films have come out. Still no Looking for Mr Goodbar.
