Were they lovers? I could never figure it out?
What was the deal with Andrew Ridgeley and George Michael?

What's to figure out? Were Bananarama lovers? I've never thought about it until now...

Of course not!

There's a pattern of straight men pairing with gay men to form highly successful musical duos:
Wham!
Air Supply
Savage Garden
Erasure
Surely there are others?

"Careless Whisper" was the gayest song title of all time.

Vince Clarke came out a few years ago, and Miss Bell has always been gayer than a Richard Simmons fart.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | August 1, 2014 5:48 PM |
Never mind. Wikipedia says Vince is married and straight.
I could have sworn I'd read that Vince came out a few years back.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | August 1, 2014 5:49 PM |
I think I read somewhere that it was indeed unrequited love on George's part. BTW, does anyone know what is going on with his health these days?
by Anonymous | reply 27 | August 1, 2014 5:52 PM |
Ren and Stimpy
Tom and Jerry
Three (menage a trois) Stooges
Rocky and Bullwinkle (ouch!)
by Anonymous | reply 28 | August 1, 2014 5:55 PM |
Andy Bell always used to tease Vince Clarke about his straight crushes. He thought it was so quaint of him to be hetero. Andy would tell a journalist about Vince's crush on Wendy James from the band Transvision Vamp, and Vince would turn bright red. Andy was always "outing" him as straight.

Re: R27. There was a story in a UK tabloid last Sunday about 'fears' that George 'is becoming a recluse.' Evidently he only sees one old friend, who also has a managerial payroll job, these days.
George has not been seen around the nearby North London village he formerly frequented. Readers were informed that George was 'disappointed' with sales from his recent album.
The old friend was snapped visiting. The article was also illustrated with pix showing George looking notably mid-life chunky.
No mention at all of George's porn star BF. Can't decide if the tabloid is flying a kite - suspecting more - or if the piece was some PR plant with an angle - if so, what? Still, I cared enough to skim it.

There are rumours that George was put into psychiatric care and is in rehab after his breakdown a few months back. I hope he's doing OK wherever he is.
And Ridgeley is completely straight. He and George were friends, that is all.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | August 1, 2014 6:18 PM |
I heard on the radio that George wanted to reunite Wham!
by Anonymous | reply 32 | August 1, 2014 6:19 PM |
[quote]Careless Whisper was actually about Andrew Ridgeley?
If so, it would be a rather odd choice. Keep in mind that the song is about a guy who cheated on his GF/BF. Not much about unrequited love in the lyrics.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | August 1, 2014 6:21 PM |
Ridgeley, going by his appearances in the UK rave/clubbing scene in the 90s, is very, very straight. And obnoxiously sexist to boot. Modeliser, while the fame lasted.

George Michael was a HUGE star in the late 80s--in 1987 or so when "Faith" came out he might have been the biggest male pop star in the world.
He could have had a career as big as Madonna--he had the talent and the looks. But after "Faith" came out promoting him as a huge sex symbol (remember the tight close-ups of his gyrating ass?) he didn't want to be a sex symbol anymore and wanted to be taken seriously as a songwriter--so in some of the videos for "Listen without Prejudice" (such as "Freedom '90") he doesn't even himself appear in the entire video.
He did get excellent reviews for "Listen without Prejudice," but he lost his momentum as a sexy superstar. After that, he really had trouble regaining his footing. His romantic partner Anselmo Faleppa died in 1993, and he understandably had huge difficulty bbouncing back after that.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | August 1, 2014 6:26 PM |
I'm not surprised he wanted to improve his reputation as a songwriter, though, given what crap he sang when he was part of Wham!--"Club Tropicana," for example, is completely indefensible in terms of both its lyrics and its music.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | August 1, 2014 6:29 PM |
George continued very successfully in Europe throughout the 90s. It was only with his covers album and his "important"/politically charged singles that the tide turned.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | August 1, 2014 6:30 PM |
I think Vince Clarke has admitted to experimenting with guys even if he's straight. I remember some interview they did several albums back where they kind of intimated they'd had sex with each other.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | August 1, 2014 7:47 PM |
I would have though Dave Gahan would have been the "experimental" one. Vince is like Chris Lowe - doesn't radiate any sexuality.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | August 1, 2014 8:01 PM |
I remember when George was in Wham! In a interview he declared Andrew 'picked his nose!'
by Anonymous | reply 41 | August 1, 2014 8:08 PM |
Why doesn't he call ME?
by Anonymous | reply 42 | August 1, 2014 8:14 PM |
I don't get it,either. George did everything in Wham - wrote, sang and arranged all the songs. Andrew made his fame and fortune from, more or less, being George's friend. He is one very lucky man.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | August 1, 2014 8:25 PM |
Andrew Ridgeley, in a 1983 interview: "I contribute everything to Wham! that George doesn't."
by Anonymous | reply 44 | August 1, 2014 8:27 PM |
Back then I thought Andrew Ridgeley was the cute one. Now....no. But I guess he looks good for his age.
Wikipedia says he's partnered with one of the girls from Bananarama. (Married/dating?)
I saw Wham! in 1985.

George has stated that he was never attracted to Andrew because he was too pretty and feminine, but they're still friends.

r40 Dave Gahan and Martin Gore both look like they have been experimental. Chris Lowe and Neil Tennant were lovers right?

No, r1, but one of Wham! and one of Bananarama were, and still are, lovers.

Who are the gays in classic rock? We all know about Halford and Mercury, but what about Boston, Chicago, Toto, Styx, Journey and all those other AOR giants of the 80s? I can't believe none of those guys ever dabbled in the man love.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | May 23, 2018 4:01 PM |
I've never heard anything to suggest they were anything more than friends. Ridgeley really did hit the jackpot by befriending George, though. George gave him a writing credit on "Careless Whisper", which basically set him up for life in terms of royalties.

Chuck Panozzo, the bassist of Styx is gay.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | May 23, 2018 4:09 PM |
Had no idea about Chuck Panozzo, and he's out about being gay and being HIV+. Good on him.
