Nudity in network TV shows, post-"NYPD Blue"

When "NYPD Blue" premiered in 1993, I thought a new moon had arisen, and that we would begin to see bare butts all over primetime television. Alas, no.

On cable shows, certainly. But while network TV seems to be more forgiving (for better or for worse) of language that was once considered inappropriate for the broadcast airwaves, nudity still appears to be frowned upon. Why is that so?

And let's discuss the nudity that has appeared on network TV, including that prior to 1993. What are your favorite examples?

by Anonymousreply 59December 20, 2019 6:42 PM

Of course there was "Tales of the City," broadcast uncut on many PBS stations in January 1994. That was quite fabulous.

by Anonymousreply 1July 31, 2014 12:51 PM

Joanna Cassidy on the TV show Philly. She was quite brave to show her tits as they were a total mess. I seem to remember her giving testimony in court and then popping her shirt open.

by Anonymousreply 2July 31, 2014 1:06 PM

I remember in 1994 there was a TV movie of the week called MY BREAST about a woman who gets breast cancer. Meredith Baxter bared her breasts and it aired on network TV!

by Anonymousreply 3July 31, 2014 1:06 PM

It's absurd if you think of what a show like "Hannibal" is able to get away so much much gruesome gore on network TV, but doing any sex scenes or non-sexual nudity even is still a huge no-no.

We can see someone being cut open and eaten, but god forbid we see a normal human body without clothes.

by Anonymousreply 4July 31, 2014 1:16 PM

Does anyone remember "Bay City Blues" from 1983? Very, very short-lived, but (because?) there was a bare butt in the first episode. I didn't realize Sharon Stone was part of the cast until I looked at IMDB.

Even daytime soaps flirted with bare male ass for a while. But it didn't last.

All time best ass on NYPD Blue: John Wesley Shipp. OWWWW!

Does anyone remember "Manor House" on PBS in 2002? A young man's bum was shown in the first episode, I believe, and I remember it was quite lovely. But you can't find episode 1 online anymore--just the other episodes. It's a conspiracy!

by Anonymousreply 7July 31, 2014 2:28 PM

Now you can see dick on cable. A week ago, we saw a really ugly, uncircumcised dick, attached to some crazy fucker on THE LEFTOVERS.

by Anonymousreply 8July 31, 2014 2:30 PM

R8, yes, but that's not the point of this thread.

I know! You get more bare ass on some of the network animated shows. It's just not fair.

by Anonymousreply 11July 31, 2014 2:49 PM

"In the current climate, nudity is almost unknown on any broadcast television show - with the exception being animated series such as The Simpsons and Family Guy (which spoofed the conservative phase of American television in the episode "PTV")."

Damn you, current climate.

Janet Jackson's tit ruined it for everyone.

by Anonymousreply 13July 31, 2014 3:02 PM

I'm horrified by the language on TV shows nowadays. I haven't had network or cable TV in my home for about four years now and I'm always astounded by how raunchy it is when I watch it at my mother's house. Even more shocked by the aforementioned Hannibal and agree that it IS fucked up how such gore is permissible but nudity is not.

by Anonymousreply 14July 31, 2014 3:12 PM

I thank NYPD Blue for giving us Mark Paul Gosselaar's naked ass on several occasions.

Rick Schroder's ass, which age of consent laws denied us the pleasure of seeing when [italic]Silver Spoons[/italic] was on the air, more than made up for that.

by Anonymousreply 17July 31, 2014 6:14 PM

"Arrow" would be an even better show if some skin were allowed. Stephen Amell and Colton Haynes showering after a tough day fighting bad guys.

by Anonymousreply 18July 31, 2014 8:02 PM

R18 You left out the word "together" after "showering."

by Anonymousreply 19July 31, 2014 9:12 PM

R8 The shameless pro-circ troll rears its ugly head once again. Next time pay attention to the Op's original thread and let the rest of enjoy skin blankets and smegma! Thank you.

by Anonymousreply 20July 31, 2014 11:34 PM

R8 has better taste than you, R20. He only eats dick that tastes good. No smegma for R8. Or for Rwhateverthisturnsouttobe.

by Anonymousreply 21July 31, 2014 11:49 PM

R21 Stop trolling. The uncut people in the world outnumber the cut people in the world. If you like cut cock then you must like Muslim cock. They don't wash their dicks for a log time honey. That dick tastes like rancid mushrooms.Stop being so anal, lighten up and enjoy some uncut cock for a change.

by Anonymousreply 22August 1, 2014 12:17 AM
The uncut people in the world outnumber the cut people in the world.

So fucking what, R22? More people eat McDonalds than asparagus or artichokes. This is the dumbest argument you smegmatics make.

TTYTT, I never thought about whether guys were circumcised before I discovered DL. I've encountered so few of them. But your nearly guaranteed indignance makes it so much fun to piss you trolldicks off.

by Anonymousreply 23August 1, 2014 12:22 AM

I really don't get the "network" vs. "cable" channel distinction anymore - they are all just another channel on the cable box.

by Anonymousreply 24August 1, 2014 12:23 AM

Same here, R24.

by Anonymousreply 25August 1, 2014 12:26 AM

R23 You're insane. This is about nudity in network shows not your pro-circ OCD! Go get a life and stop trolling......

by Anonymousreply 26August 1, 2014 12:30 AM

R24, only about half of American households subscribe to cable.

by Anonymousreply 27August 1, 2014 12:34 AM

Merely responding to your inane rantings, R26.

by Anonymousreply 28August 1, 2014 12:37 AM

Some awesome nudity on "Lonesome Dove"- Barry Tubb, who showed his ass on "Bay City Blues", showed frontal nudity in that miniseries, when they were fording a stream. D.B. Sweeney, Rick Schroeder...schwing!

by Anonymousreply 29August 1, 2014 2:21 AM

And today we get Lens Dunham.

by Anonymousreply 30August 1, 2014 2:27 AM

I feel like I remember seeing nudity on the short lived Valley of the Dolls tv series back in the early 90's. I certainly remember the sex scenes.

by Anonymousreply 31August 1, 2014 3:55 AM

R30, that's HBO not network TV.

by Anonymousreply 32August 1, 2014 4:03 AM

I remember naked male butt in the music video for Billy Joel's "Allentown" ... I jerked off to that video a lot.

IT was the early 80s, we didn't have the internet, there was no easy access porn! We had to make-do!

by Anonymousreply 33August 1, 2014 5:52 AM

Not network TV, but I remember around 1994-1995, MTV used to feature a series of commercials starring this cute guy who was always revealed to be nude.

In one, he shows up to school nude and the female teacher drags him to the principal's office by his ear. You got a longshot of the cute guy and teacher down the hallway and a nice ass shot of the cute guy.

In another, the cute guy is a pizza delivery guy and he delivers a pizza to a sorority. One of the girls quips, "We didn't order pepperoni." Then you get a long shot of the cute guy from behind to reveal he's completely naked and you get a nice shot of his ass.

Does anyone remember these?
Does anyone remember "Bay City Blues" from 1983? Very, very short-lived, but (because?) there was a bare butt in the first episode. I didn't realize Sharon Stone was part of the cast until I looked at IMDB.

That was Barry Tubb from Consenting Adult and Top Gun.

I only learned about that show years later and have always wanted to see it.

by Anonymousreply 35August 1, 2014 7:03 AM

R35 "Bay City Blues" was runnning on ESPN Classic not long ago.

Barry Tubb was at his sexy prime in "Top Gun". Couldn't believe his dick was flopping about as he was getting on his horse in "Lonesome Dice". A treat!

by Anonymousreply 36August 1, 2014 7:15 AM

I was in high school in the seventies and always watched this show. Check out this shower scene from "The White Shadow." Not too prudish.

I remember a scene from an episode of the original DeGrassi High (circa 1988) where some cute student lost a bet and he had to walk naked in the cafeteria with only a hat to cover his dick, then he tried hiding when the principal walked in. PBS did show his bare ass! And that's how I got hooked on watching DeGrassi High. Anyone else remember that episode?

R34 and R38, can you provide links? I remember the pizza commercial you mention, R34, (although I thought it was "We didn't order sausage on our pizza,") but I don't remember nudity.

by Anonymousreply 42August 1, 2014 4:54 PM

r8 how can we miss you if you won't go away?

by Anonymousreply 47August 4, 2014 5:50 AM

First nudity I ever saw on network TV was in a show called Steambath on PBS of all places.I remember being so shocked.

Speaking of NYPDBlue whatever happened to Dennis Franz ? He was so talented. He should be on another show.

by Anonymousreply 48August 4, 2014 6:17 AM

R38, the Degrassi series was a Canadian show, syndicated out to PBS, who I guess liked it because it was 'real', and dealt with issues and such.

Canada is waaay less uptight about nudity, including in their media/TV. At least by North American standards. I mean it might not be Sweden or something, but I've seen backal nudity at all hours of the day(it's not all-pervasive, but I've seen it) on non-cable channels, including government-funded channels (which is really a thorn in conservatives paws here), and I've even seen (nonsexual) frontal nudity late at night.

The interim leader of the Liberal Party, was even dared to skinny dip on a comedy show once, and did. The general feeling was that this just silly and fun, and not a big deal.

Imagine if John Boehner, or Nancy Pelosi skinnydipped on non-cable TV.

by Anonymousreply 49August 4, 2014 6:25 AM
Imagine if John Boehner, or Nancy Pelosi skinnydipped on non-cable TV.

No.

by Anonymousreply 50August 4, 2014 12:55 PM
Was Gwynnie ever on St. Elsewhere?

No, but she wouldn't have been the worst actress on it if they had Candace fucking Cameron swallowing mothballs on it in its first season.

by Anonymousreply 51December 20, 2019 4:42 PM

Not US, but in the UK Andrew Lincoln did frontal nudity (stepping out of a shower) in "This Life" (1996). Much later he got his big US break in The Walking Dead.

What was that show in the late 70s about a high school basketball team coached by Ken something? They always had shower scenes in that but I don’t thunk they showed ass

by Anonymousreply 53December 20, 2019 5:24 PM

[italic]The White Shadow[/italic], and I don't remember a bare ass on that show.

by Anonymousreply 54December 20, 2019 5:31 PM

R54 Check out upthread. You do see some bare ass. Tim Van Patten was real hot back then.

by Anonymousreply 55December 20, 2019 6:02 PM

Holy shit this thread is old. Now I want to see those MTV commercials.

by Anonymousreply 56December 20, 2019 6:03 PM

How did they get away with that when most of the characters on that show were high school students?

by Anonymousreply 57December 20, 2019 6:07 PM

PBS doesn't count...

by Anonymousreply 58December 20, 2019 6:14 PM

I recall watching a brief bit of a movie called Cotton Comes To Harlem (took me years to figure out what it was called) once on TV at my grandparent's house in the mid-90's. They didn't have any of the premium channels like HBO or Showtime, so it had to have been on a regular network like TNT or TBS or something.

Check it out at 7:30. I'll never forget seeing this man's ass on regular TV. Before the days of easily accessible internet porn, things like this were a godsend. I still wonder how they got away with this and what channel it was. I was still young, so I know I wasn't up after midnight or something and most of my memories of watching movies on TV involved the films being heavily censored for language, sex, nudity, and gore. I still don't know how this entire scene snuck by.
