Cher Hated 'If I Could Turn Back Time' At First
"The song she really hated was 'If I Could Turn Back Time,' but I held her leg down during a session and said, 'You have to record it!' "
To which Cher responded, according to Diane Warren, "'Fuck you, bitch! You're hurting my leg! OK, I'll try it.' She gave me this look like, 'You were right.' If you look at Cher's song history, she's not always the best judge of her own material. I mean, she hated 'I Got You Babe.'"

Bitchy comment: Cher - I just don't get it.
Wise reply: Number one hits in each of the last six decades. Every one else gets it.

"Cher Hated 'If I Could Turn Back Time'"
Because Cher's vast experiences confirmed that only surgeons can do that.

She has said that she also hates "that Jesse James song". It is one that I have always enjoyed.

But she's right - If I Could Turn Back Time is a truly terrible song, as is everything that Diane Warren wrote. Schlock for the masses.

Tina said the same thing about What's Love Got to Do With It. She thought it was dentist-office-level album filler.
Unfortunately, after that song became a huge hit, she filled her next few albums with similar sounding tracks that were, indeed, dentist-office-level.

I agree with R4.
Never a favorite of mine.
OTOH, We All Sleep Alone was brilliant.
Not a huge fan of Cher's 80s material.

I don't know who wrote it, but one of my favorite Cher songs is "Strong Enough."
I've seen her do it live several times. It's great.

Always loved the song and pretty much most of the songs Diane Warren wrote, but I don't doubt that some of the song's success came from the controversy surrounding the video at the time.

What a weird and kind of wonderful phenomena is Cher. I am honestly not a fan, have never owned a recording by her and have never seen her in concert.
But she was once so unusually beautiful, and her less than great voice has held up pretty well. My mother told me that Cher was the most exciting beauty of the the seventies and the anti-Streisand. Cher worked hard to be good, but not at the expense of being entertaining and free. She was always it seems, kind of cool.
She sounds like Elvis and too much time has made her look and mannerisms a draggy joke. But she is old school show biz, holding on tight while riding any wave that keeps her in the light. I dig her, but can't listen to her sing for long. I do love Walking in Memphis. I have terrible Cher taste. I guess she does too.
Ray Charles and Cher. She's gorgeous and not terrible. Her epitaph.

I loved the video at the time. Almost everyone I knew was dying or dead. All those phallic symbols, and SAILORS! Talking about it was as close as I felt I could get to another gay man. and we all talked about it.

Love, love, love Cher. In my book she's queen of the universe.
I've seen her in concert a half a dozen times. She puts on a show like no other. Her voice is quite good and it's held up--still strong and powerful. And she's gorgeous. She's old-school show business--disciplined, dedicated and gives her fans what they want. The crowds who go to see her, love her. She continues to fill arena after arena throughout the country.
I just saw Cher's current "Dressed to Kill" tour in San Diego two weeks ago. It was pretty fucking spectacular--and so was she. The crowd ran the gamut from young to old. She's an awesome performer.
See Cher before you die. She's a show business original--and still better than any of the crop of youngsters on the scene today. There's nobody like her. As Cher once said, "Take that, bitches."

I thought Cher was just gorgeous, especially in the 70s.
She wasn't a perfect sort of beauty but when you added all her parts together it just worked.
She also had a body that was beyond compare. She wore those Mackie gowns well when they'd have looked OTT on somebody else.

Cher and Sonny&Cher should definitely be in the RRHF.
If for no other reason than the fact that Cher is the only artist to have a #1 hit in 5 different decades.
I've heard it mentioned she'll never get in because Jann hates her for some reason.
He should not have a right to refusal clause or what not.

Gay guys are always elevating the performer above the material. I like Cher, she seems cool. But she's never recorded a good, well-written song in her life, except maybe (to be generous) the hits with Sonny. She's only recorded forgettable fluff. That's why she's not in the RRHF.

I love that song as well as Just Like Jesse James (also by D Warren), Love On The rooftop (By Diane Warren, Desmond child) originally written for & recorded by Ronnie Spector which of course failed to chart as almost every song that Ronnie Spector has recorded as a solo artist, though later they become cult songs. Those three songs appear on Cher´s heart Of Stone album which is by far my all time favorite Cher album. Those pre-Believe years, the power ballads were great !

How in the hell is Vadge in the R&R Hall of Fame when she's a pop/dance singer, but Cher who was actually known for her rock records in the 80's and early 90's isn't?

Cher hated 'Dark Lady' as well. Funny, since she passed on 'Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia' only for fear she'd alienate Southern fans.

I always thought she was more interesting as an actress than a singer. Ageing out and a frozen face mean she won't be offered roles, except maybe playing herself.

She really isn't artist is she? She seems to just do music for money and not to make any type of statement. She isn't really a vocal powerhouse either. I do like her a lot as an actress. Her biggest talent is looking good and being a celebrity.

Because Madonna's influence on music and pop culture is too huge to deny. Same reason Michael Jackson and NWA are in the hall of fame. They really should just rename it to Pop Music Hall of Fame or something.

Madonna fans keep saying that but what they fail to explain is what that alleged “influence” really is beyond hypersexualizing female performers, What “impact” on music has she had?

I actually think Janet had a bigger influence in terms of choreography and visuals than Madonna. I think Madonna's influence was mixing high culture with low culture and mixing commercial with avant-garde, she didn't create anything but she brought a lot of subcultures to the mainstream. TLC and Alanis Morisette are also influential. Cher, I like her as a person but she had not much of an influence on music besides popularizing autotune in the late 90s.
