Less than 3% of the population are gay or bisexual?
Mmmm... This looks peculiar.
Health survey gives government its first large-scale data on gay, bisexual population
Less than 3 percent of the U.S. population identify themselves as gay, lesbian or bisexual, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Tuesday in the first large-scale government survey measuring Americans’ sexual orientation.
The National Health Interview Survey, which is the government’s premier tool for annually assessing Americans’ health and behaviors, found that 1.6 percent of adults self-identify as gay or lesbian, and 0.7 percent consider themselves bisexual.
The overwhelming majority of adults, 96.6 percent, labeled themselves as straight in the 2013 survey. An additional 1.1 percent declined to answer, responded “I don’t know the answer” or said they were “something else.”
The figures offered a slightly smaller assessment of the size of the gay, lesbian and bisexual population than other surveys, which have pegged the overall proportion at closer to 3.5 or 4 percent. In particular, the estimate for bisexuals was lower than in some other surveys.
The inclusion of the sexual-orientation question in an influential survey used to guide government funding and research decisions was viewed as a major victory for the gay community, which has struggled with a dearth of data about its special health needs.

the data here only matter is the sexual orientation of all who are involved in the survey is disclosed and the percent that identify as homos in that sample matches or exceeds the percent in the survey itself

"found that 1.6 percent of adults self-identify as gay or lesbian."
The operative word here is self-identify, which is total bullshit.
1.6% doesnt include the numerous closet cases repeatedly sticking their dicks in other men's mouths and asses on the down low. If you include them in the numbers, the reality is closer to 10%.
Now the thread is closed.

1.1% refused to answer....why? Why even take the survey if you won't answer the questions? Of course the number would be higher if everyone was honest.

6-7% identify as gay in exit polling for elections. And you can add at least a percent or two of people who won't identify as gay to a pollster.
Are gays more likely to vote? I dunno.

The latest U.S. Census also reports 1.6%.

The survey isn't only about sexuality. It's The National Health Interview Survey and there are bound to be respondents who are uncomfortable answering questions about their sexuality.
1.1% could consider themselves asexual, although that number seems a little high.

It's sure as hell a LOT lower than 10%. All of you homos living in gay ghettos or working in jobs like flight attendants, fashion, waitstaff, real estate etc, of COURSE it's going to seem like gays are everywhere. Get out there in the real world, living in a not-so-popular outer borough and working a dull job in a corporation; you'll very quickly see how very few people are gay.

Yes, R9, because gay people NEVER have corporate jobs, and we all flock to professions that don't require more than a mid-to-low level of qualification. Thank you for making such a logical argument.
Also, the closet cases ALL must also work in retail, fashion, the services industry, the arts and real estate, right? As for bisexuals (especially the ones on the down low), what do they do? Do they work part-time in corporations, where they express their straight side, and then moonlight as flight attendants or waiters, where they indulge in they gayness?
Honestly, your arguments are just downright stupid.

"Self-identify" as gay is vastly different than "actively engaging in gay sex, or fantasizing about gay sex.
Look at all those gay porn performers who are undeniably gay or bisexual, who clearly enjoy same-sex relations, but do NOT identify as gay or bisexual.

This is the biggest joke in the universe. I'm a straight beautiful woman and cannot FIND an attractive straight man in NYC. None of them are out of the closet either... they're all hiding in there! I honestly believe the issue is that no one ADMITS they're gay, even in 2014!! So we have a bunch of gay men going around pretending to be straight and lying to pollsters (not to mention, WOMEN!) about it. I seriously believe the REAL number is EASILY 25% of the population is gay, if not higher, and the percentage of truly HANDSOME men is more like 90%!! If anyone questions me, come to NYC for a few days.

For men, it is the association of the word "gay" with femininity and girliness that makes so many same-sex oriented males from identifying with the term. Also, for bisexuals, they tend to identify with their heterosexual interests more than their gay interests, so if they are face to face with a researcher, they are likely to identify as straight. It is interesting that this study not only found a tiny percentage of Americans identify as LGB, but that a larger than usual number identified as straight. Typically, these studies have huge numbers of people who either refuse to answer the question, identify as something else, or say they don't know. In this study, people were almost unanimous in their assertion of heterosexual identity.

That's funny - I was never asked to take this "survey".
These "surveys" are so stupid and pointless. Unless you ask every single person in the U.S., you're never going to get an accurate percentage. Also, don't forget that a lot of people are in denial and don't consider themselves gay or bisexual even if they do sleep with the same sex.

I think 3-5% is about right. It's a big country and a lot of gays move to higher concentrated gay areas in large cities.
That being said, it is noteable that there is a higher percentage of searches for gay porn in red states - so a lot of downlow people in those areas.

r20, but what about same-sex oriented people who for religious, cultural, family, self-awareness, or comformity issues don't see themselves as or don't want to identify as LGB? This survey only measured openly gay/bi people. It does not measure the true same-sex oriented population.

100% of men are bisexual, so this study is bullshit. Actually, a study came out last year suggesting that homophobic phrasing in sexuality studies meant that the gay/lesbian/bisexual population is being underestimated by as much as 20%.
I still maintain that there would be another 80% of the population who are technically bisexual (which, btw, does not need to mean equal or indeed anything more than incidental attraction to both sexes, and does not need to mean that such attraction is concurrent). But many such men only rarely acknowledge this to themselves.
Bailey's notorious "bi men don't exist" study from a few years back has been retested and discredited by Bailey himself.
The real problem is that people are brought up to think of themselves in an either/or sexuality paradigm.

Since no minority male will admit to being either gay or bi in a survey, a HUGE number of men who have sex with men is/are omitted from this survey.
It should say 3% will admit to being either gay or bi in a survey because that is all that it captures, not actual guys having gay sex.

Take these polls 50 years from now when gay shame is less. There are far too many people who can even say the word "gay" because they hate themselves that much. These polls, today, do not give good insight into how many LGBT people there are. When this generation dies out and younger generations are at ease with themselves, then poll.

He said differences can come from how questions are asked, as well as the ages of participants. Mariner noted that in another CDC study that focused on youth in the Washington area, 15.3% of high school respondents identified as gay, lesbian or bisexual. He said young people can be more comfortable with their sexuality and more likely to report being gay, lesbian or bisexual.

1.6% sounds about right for lesbians. I live in a metro area of 5 million and there are virtually no lesbians on any of the dating sites or apps. The bars are dead too. Only conclusion I can draw is that many lesbians wanted heteronormative privilege and settled into a 'straight' lifestyle.

If homosexuality is a non-sex specific genetic condition, one would expect to see an even distribution between males and females. The fact that there are at least one order of magnitude more gay males than gay females indicates that there are probably other drivers such as socio-economics.
