Less than 3% of the population are gay or bisexual?

Mmmm... This looks peculiar.

Health survey gives government its first large-scale data on gay, bisexual population

Less than 3 percent of the U.S. population identify themselves as gay, lesbian or bisexual, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported Tuesday in the first large-scale government survey measuring Americans’ sexual orientation.

The National Health Interview Survey, which is the government’s premier tool for annually assessing Americans’ health and behaviors, found that 1.6 percent of adults self-identify as gay or lesbian, and 0.7 percent consider themselves bisexual.

The overwhelming majority of adults, 96.6 percent, labeled themselves as straight in the 2013 survey. An additional 1.1 percent declined to answer, responded “I don’t know the answer” or said they were “something else.”

The figures offered a slightly smaller assessment of the size of the gay, lesbian and bisexual population than other surveys, which have pegged the overall proportion at closer to 3.5 or 4 percent. In particular, the estimate for bisexuals was lower than in some other surveys.

The inclusion of the sexual-orientation question in an influential survey used to guide government funding and research decisions was viewed as a major victory for the gay community, which has struggled with a dearth of data about its special health needs.

the data here only matter is the sexual orientation of all who are involved in the survey is disclosed and the percent that identify as homos in that sample matches or exceeds the percent in the survey itself

by Anonymousreply 1July 16, 2014 6:42 PM

Any survey showing the gay population as anything less than 10% is a lie.

by Anonymousreply 2July 16, 2014 6:56 PM

3% is absolute motherfucking bullshit.

by Anonymousreply 3July 16, 2014 7:01 PM

"found that 1.6 percent of adults self-identify as gay or lesbian."

The operative word here is self-identify, which is total bullshit.

1.6% doesnt include the numerous closet cases repeatedly sticking their dicks in other men's mouths and asses on the down low. If you include them in the numbers, the reality is closer to 10%.

Now the thread is closed.

by Anonymousreply 4July 16, 2014 7:05 PM

1.1% refused to answer....why? Why even take the survey if you won't answer the questions? Of course the number would be higher if everyone was honest.

by Anonymousreply 5July 16, 2014 7:06 PM

there is no way to get an accurate sampling while there is still stigma attached to being gay.

by Anonymousreply 6July 16, 2014 7:09 PM

6-7% identify as gay in exit polling for elections. And you can add at least a percent or two of people who won't identify as gay to a pollster.

Are gays more likely to vote? I dunno.

by Anonymousreply 7July 16, 2014 7:11 PM

The latest U.S. Census also reports 1.6%.

[quote]1.1% refused to answer....why? Why even take the survey if you won't answer the questions? Of course the number would be higher if everyone was honest.

The survey isn't only about sexuality. It's The National Health Interview Survey and there are bound to be respondents who are uncomfortable answering questions about their sexuality.

1.1% could consider themselves asexual, although that number seems a little high.

by Anonymousreply 8July 16, 2014 7:23 PM

It's sure as hell a LOT lower than 10%. All of you homos living in gay ghettos or working in jobs like flight attendants, fashion, waitstaff, real estate etc, of COURSE it's going to seem like gays are everywhere. Get out there in the real world, living in a not-so-popular outer borough and working a dull job in a corporation; you'll very quickly see how very few people are gay.

by Anonymousreply 9July 16, 2014 7:23 PM

Young people today aren't into labels.

by Anonymousreply 10July 16, 2014 7:24 PM

R6 is right. Less than 3% gay and about 20% that refuse to admit it.

by Anonymousreply 11July 16, 2014 7:26 PM

I helped bring the numbers down a bit.

by Anonymousreply 12July 16, 2014 7:29 PM

Yes, R9, because gay people NEVER have corporate jobs, and we all flock to professions that don't require more than a mid-to-low level of qualification. Thank you for making such a logical argument.

Also, the closet cases ALL must also work in retail, fashion, the services industry, the arts and real estate, right? As for bisexuals (especially the ones on the down low), what do they do? Do they work part-time in corporations, where they express their straight side, and then moonlight as flight attendants or waiters, where they indulge in they gayness?

Honestly, your arguments are just downright stupid.

by Anonymousreply 13July 16, 2014 8:41 PM

"Self-identify" as gay is vastly different than "actively engaging in gay sex, or fantasizing about gay sex.

Look at all those gay porn performers who are undeniably gay or bisexual, who clearly enjoy same-sex relations, but do NOT identify as gay or bisexual.

by Anonymousreply 14July 16, 2014 9:07 PM

This is the biggest joke in the universe. I'm a straight beautiful woman and cannot FIND an attractive straight man in NYC. None of them are out of the closet either... they're all hiding in there! I honestly believe the issue is that no one ADMITS they're gay, even in 2014!! So we have a bunch of gay men going around pretending to be straight and lying to pollsters (not to mention, WOMEN!) about it. I seriously believe the REAL number is EASILY 25% of the population is gay, if not higher, and the percentage of truly HANDSOME men is more like 90%!! If anyone questions me, come to NYC for a few days.

by Anonymousreply 15July 20, 2014 2:19 AM

LA: Easily 50%

by Anonymousreply 16July 20, 2014 2:26 AM

For men, it is the association of the word "gay" with femininity and girliness that makes so many same-sex oriented males from identifying with the term. Also, for bisexuals, they tend to identify with their heterosexual interests more than their gay interests, so if they are face to face with a researcher, they are likely to identify as straight. It is interesting that this study not only found a tiny percentage of Americans identify as LGB, but that a larger than usual number identified as straight. Typically, these studies have huge numbers of people who either refuse to answer the question, identify as something else, or say they don't know. In this study, people were almost unanimous in their assertion of heterosexual identity.

by Anonymousreply 17July 20, 2014 2:31 AM

That's funny - I was never asked to take this "survey".

These "surveys" are so stupid and pointless. Unless you ask every single person in the U.S., you're never going to get an accurate percentage. Also, don't forget that a lot of people are in denial and don't consider themselves gay or bisexual even if they do sleep with the same sex.

by Anonymousreply 18July 20, 2014 2:37 AM

It's bullshit, poor research, or political - take your pick. It certainly isn't the truth.

by Anonymousreply 19July 20, 2014 2:52 AM

I think 3-5% is about right. It's a big country and a lot of gays move to higher concentrated gay areas in large cities.

That being said, it is noteable that there is a higher percentage of searches for gay porn in red states - so a lot of downlow people in those areas.

by Anonymousreply 20July 20, 2014 3:00 AM

r20, but what about same-sex oriented people who for religious, cultural, family, self-awareness, or comformity issues don't see themselves as or don't want to identify as LGB? This survey only measured openly gay/bi people. It does not measure the true same-sex oriented population.

by Anonymousreply 21July 20, 2014 3:04 AM

My personal experience is that "1 in 7" is about right.

by Anonymousreply 22July 20, 2014 11:24 PM

not

by Anonymousreply 23July 22, 2014 2:38 AM

The gay label is not gonna be embraced by most same sex people. It has a lot of baggage about non gender conformity that most people dislike. Most dudes are not gonna identify with a word associated with Feminjne men.

by Anonymousreply 24July 24, 2014 5:21 AM

I eat shit.

by Anonymousreply 25July 24, 2014 5:22 AM

Not only do I eat shit I'm a micro dicked loser obsessed with porn stars.

by Anonymousreply 26July 24, 2014 5:51 AM

1 in 7

by Anonymousreply 27July 24, 2014 5:57 AM

I call bullshit on that. Way higher. Just peruse any Craig's list for "Platonic" or "missed connections" for a start.

by Anonymousreply 28July 24, 2014 6:08 AM

100% of men are bisexual, so this study is bullshit. Actually, a study came out last year suggesting that homophobic phrasing in sexuality studies meant that the gay/lesbian/bisexual population is being underestimated by as much as 20%.

I still maintain that there would be another 80% of the population who are technically bisexual (which, btw, does not need to mean equal or indeed anything more than incidental attraction to both sexes, and does not need to mean that such attraction is concurrent). But many such men only rarely acknowledge this to themselves.

Bailey's notorious "bi men don't exist" study from a few years back has been retested and discredited by Bailey himself.

The real problem is that people are brought up to think of themselves in an either/or sexuality paradigm.

by Anonymousreply 29July 24, 2014 6:27 AM

Uh ok, dude

by Anonymousreply 30July 24, 2014 12:16 PM

There was a caveat in this study that the younger ages were higher (like 15%). Read that in USA Today.

by Anonymousreply 31July 24, 2014 1:11 PM

Link your source. No studies have found 15 percent identification as LGB.

by Anonymousreply 32July 24, 2014 1:45 PM

I'm not talking about identification, R32, I'm talking about behaviour.

by Anonymousreply 33July 24, 2014 2:40 PM

R29 is quite correct. Most people are actually bisexual, but refuse to accept it for warped cultural reasons.

Eventually, if mankind doesn't destroy the planet first, humans will be human, and mate with whomever they are attracted too, without judgement, shame, and ridicule. Because, in the end, love is the answer.

by Anonymousreply 34July 24, 2014 2:50 PM

Here's another study, R32.

by Anonymousreply 35July 24, 2014 2:55 PM

Since no minority male will admit to being either gay or bi in a survey, a HUGE number of men who have sex with men is/are omitted from this survey.

It should say 3% will admit to being either gay or bi in a survey because that is all that it captures, not actual guys having gay sex.

by Anonymousreply 36July 24, 2014 3:26 PM

Religious fanatics fighting religious fanatics. Losers fighting losers.

by Anonymousreply 37July 24, 2014 3:34 PM

"Most people are actually bisexual, but refuse to accept it for warped cultural reasons."

Most people are NOT bisexual. That said, I do think these studies underrepresent the number of gays and bis - especially bis, since they are more likely to be closeted than gays.

by Anonymousreply 38July 24, 2014 3:39 PM

Take these polls 50 years from now when gay shame is less. There are far too many people who can even say the word "gay" because they hate themselves that much. These polls, today, do not give good insight into how many LGBT people there are. When this generation dies out and younger generations are at ease with themselves, then poll.

by Anonymousreply 39July 24, 2014 3:39 PM

"100% of men are bisexual"

Only in your dreams

by Anonymousreply 40July 24, 2014 3:41 PM

I think a jillion people don't even take time to think about it. Plenty of people just do whatever will bring them the most socially advantageous circumstances.

by Anonymousreply 41July 24, 2014 3:59 PM

here you go r32

He said differences can come from how questions are asked, as well as the ages of participants. Mariner noted that in another CDC study that focused on youth in the Washington area, 15.3% of high school respondents identified as gay, lesbian or bisexual. He said young people can be more comfortable with their sexuality and more likely to report being gay, lesbian or bisexual.

Census forms are filled out as a family (no privacy).

by Anonymousreply 43July 25, 2014 7:39 PM

Second, they are filled out by Mom or Dad, so if they don't want anyone thinking there are homos in the house, nobody will be told about it. Straights are filling out the survey intended to capture gay people!

by Anonymousreply 44July 25, 2014 7:40 PM

3% sounds a bit low. I would say about 5-7% are LGB, with majority being bi.

by Anonymousreply 45August 31, 2019 10:38 PM

It’s true. There aren’t that many gay people. Which is why I laugh at how you all act like there are so many. Gays aren’t all over. We really ARENT.

by Anonymousreply 46August 31, 2019 10:43 PM

30% can or will have same same-sex sex! 5-10% is when it’s people’s complete identity.

by Anonymousreply 47August 31, 2019 10:44 PM

R47 false. Most men won’t have same sex sex.

by Anonymousreply 48August 31, 2019 10:52 PM

Maybe not 3%, but definitely not 10% or higher. That's ridiculous

by Anonymousreply 49August 31, 2019 10:57 PM

I believe it (gay/lesbian only), 5 % max. 10 % is delusional.

by Anonymousreply 50August 31, 2019 10:58 PM

R20 I agree, gay neighborhoods or big cities are not representative. 5 % max.

by Anonymousreply 51August 31, 2019 11:00 PM

You should work in a prison!!!

by Anonymousreply 52August 31, 2019 11:00 PM

Why did r45 bump this 5 year old thread?

by Anonymousreply 53August 31, 2019 11:02 PM

It's definitely under 10 percent. That's why it's so hard to find a good gay man. Most guys are straight.

by Anonymousreply 54August 31, 2019 11:04 PM

3% or 10%, both are utter bull hockey.

by Anonymousreply 55August 31, 2019 11:08 PM

What say you, R55?

by Anonymousreply 56August 31, 2019 11:09 PM

I say it's closer to 15%.

by Anonymousreply 57August 31, 2019 11:12 PM

And that's just the full on homos. If you add in the admitted bi-sexuals and all men who have or yearn to but don't have the guts to engage in the love that dare not speak its name, I think the number would be closer to 30%.

by Anonymousreply 58August 31, 2019 11:14 PM

The gay delusion is scary.

Gays are a major minority. Get over it.

by Anonymousreply 59August 31, 2019 11:16 PM

Gurl!!! Not at my GYM!!! Oh, Lordy!

by Anonymousreply 60August 31, 2019 11:17 PM

Let the Fraus spend the night fighting over the numbers that scare them. Everyone else will be out having a lot of same sex! (& straight sex)

by Anonymousreply 61August 31, 2019 11:18 PM

1.6% sounds about right for lesbians. I live in a metro area of 5 million and there are virtually no lesbians on any of the dating sites or apps. The bars are dead too. Only conclusion I can draw is that many lesbians wanted heteronormative privilege and settled into a 'straight' lifestyle.

by Anonymousreply 62September 1, 2019 1:45 AM

"Less than 3 percent of the U.S. population identify themselves as gay, lesbian or bisexual"... people just don't say that they are gay... which proves despite what millenials think (homophobia is the past), people refuse to say that they are gay because it is still dangerous. nothing has changed since the 50s, except that homophobes have learnt political correctness...

by Anonymousreply 63September 1, 2019 3:11 AM

It's funny how lesbians over at LChat claim that lesbians make 1-2% the most, some say it's even below 1% while gays on DL give numbers like 25-35%. Such a big difference

by Anonymousreply 64September 1, 2019 3:44 PM

No, most people are NOT bisexual--this is a lie that bisexuals keep spouting over and over again.

by Anonymousreply 65September 1, 2019 3:50 PM

The people who keep repeating the lie "most people are bisexual" are the same people who STILL reference the Kinsey Scale.

by Anonymousreply 66September 1, 2019 3:51 PM

Do you think there's an equal amount of gay men and gay women?

by Anonymousreply 67September 10, 2019 9:59 AM

R67 No, why should the percentage be equal?

by Anonymousreply 68September 10, 2019 3:54 PM

Until everyone feels safe to be who they are we will never know how many people are gay or bi. I have known guys who just absolutely refuse to admit they are gay even when they have never had sex with a female but have had sex with a bunch of guys. If they won't admit it to themselves they sure aren't going to say they are gay on a survey.

by Anonymousreply 69September 10, 2019 4:15 PM

R68 Just curious? I assume you think the gay men outnumber gay women, right?

by Anonymousreply 70September 10, 2019 10:28 PM

R70 yes because most studies report that there are more gay men and more bi women.

by Anonymousreply 71September 10, 2019 11:07 PM

Russian trolls have posted this multiple times now.

by Anonymousreply 72September 10, 2019 11:48 PM

R72 posted what?

by Anonymousreply 73September 11, 2019 8:03 AM

If homosexuality is a non-sex specific genetic condition, one would expect to see an even distribution between males and females. The fact that there are at least one order of magnitude more gay males than gay females indicates that there are probably other drivers such as socio-economics.

by Anonymousreply 74September 13, 2019 2:01 AM

posted what? are you that stupid Boris?

by Anonymousreply 75September 13, 2019 8:56 PM

What makes you think homosexuality is a genetic condition that is non-sex specific? Men and women have different genetics.

by Anonymousreply 76September 13, 2019 9:41 PM

The National Health Interview Survey is creepily invasive, and LGBT people would be wise not to answer the sexual identity questions, or not to answer honestly.
