What is the best mattress?

I'm moving to a new place and am shopping for a new mattress. Holy cow, there are so many choices and they're all so expensive. I don't want to drop 5 grand on a mattress.

Is memory foam better than a regular mattress? Is it like sleeping on a giant sponge? I heard it gets hot and you can't sit on the edge. How is fucking on a memory foam? Do you just sink in since there are no springs to give it any pushback?

by Anonymousreply 68November 29, 2020 8:11 PM

If you go for a traditional (coil) mattress, go for one with individual coils for the best support/wear. I have a Serta european pillow top individual coil mattress that I've had for 8 years now, never had a problem and still as comfortable as when I bought it. I think I paid around $2k.

by Anonymousreply 1July 15, 2014 9:44 PM

I also need advice on this matter. Thanks op.

by Anonymousreply 2July 15, 2014 9:49 PM

It really comes down to size.

If you're a regular sized person, memory foam.

If you're a fat fuck, go for coils.

by Anonymousreply 3July 15, 2014 9:52 PM

Memory foam is soooo white trash, and it's too hot.

I bought a Tempurpedic because friends raved about it. Hated it. Returned it and got a high end Stearns & Foster matress instead.

by Anonymousreply 10July 15, 2014 10:24 PM

Memory foam - a friend has one and says it's too hot and difficult to fuck on

Bottom line, do some research, read reviews and try out as many as you can. Took me 6 months of research to settle on the one I bought and 8 years later, I'm still happy with it. Whatever you do, don't cheap out. You'll be sorry in the long run.

by Anonymousreply 11July 15, 2014 10:28 PM

I'm not the princess feeling a pea, but the foam is too hot and always has felt uncomfortable to me - you roll over and wait for the foam to adjust to your new position as you feel the ridges and dips where your body parts had been.

As R2/R11 said, spend the money it takes to be comfortable.

R3, another "thread-closed" bed bug - pffft.

by Anonymousreply 13July 16, 2014 12:08 AM

memory foam also outgases throughout its life. So, you are basically smoked like a piece of meat very night by all sorts of odorless chemicals from the foam mattress. That could not be good for your skin.

by Anonymousreply 14July 16, 2014 12:16 AM

Memory foam is the worst.

Insanely hot and bad for sex.

by Anonymousreply 15July 16, 2014 12:22 AM

by Anonymousreply 16July 16, 2014 2:25 AM

I just bought a memory foam. It was the best purchase I've ever made. I recommend it for everyone. People warned me about memory foam getting hot, but that was total bullshit.

by Anonymousreply 18July 16, 2014 2:31 AM

Coils are so last century. My great-grandparents slept on coils.

by Anonymousreply 19July 16, 2014 2:49 AM

Had my Spring Air Mattress for a long time now. Still as comfortable as the first time I got into it. It has a pillow top and doesn't need to be flipped. Paid about $1,100 10 years ago.

by Anonymousreply 20July 16, 2014 2:53 AM

I've had both memory foam and spring-coil (pillow-top) mattresses. I prefer the pillow-top by far.

I never noticed the heating complaints of the memory foam, but I agree the support can seem a little weak sometimes. There are different types of spring-coil mattresses, but pillow-top ones have an extra layer of cushioning on top, and sleeping on them is like falling on top of a cloud. But they've still got good support.

I recommend actually going to a mattress store and trying different ones out until you find one you like. My pillow-top cost about $2000, but it was a wonderful investment that's given me nights of comfort for several years. I will say that memory foams have the benefit of being much cheaper - I think you can get good ones on Amazon for about $500 or so.

by Anonymousreply 21July 16, 2014 2:56 AM

I have the Spring Air pillowtop at home and the BF has a memory foam mattress in the city. I actually sleep well in his bed too. I just like the feeling of sinking into a cloud with the pillow top.

Look up DIY mattresses online, and make your own!

by Anonymousreply 23July 16, 2014 3:09 AM

I just bought a Saatva and it is the best mattress I have slept on. It's a firm blush and is both innerspring (DOUBLE COIL, INDIVIDUALLY pocketed) plus mempry foam. Ccost 900.00 for queen sized. Only availabe online, but free return if not satisfied. It's quite thick, about 14 inches. Check it out, you won't be sorry.

by Anonymousreply 24July 16, 2014 3:17 AM

I'm looking at a Rhapsody by Tempurpedic. I'd like to sink into my bed if possible. I roll over on my side and wake up on my current mattress.

by Anonymousreply 25July 16, 2014 3:24 AM

The tempur-pedic "Cloud" mattress is the best I've ever slept on.

by Anonymousreply 26July 16, 2014 3:27 AM

These threads pop up frequently. I the past, the consensus has been, buy a latex mattress. Superior in every way. The other popular option is to purchase a mattress at Coscto. People are happy with the quality. Also, there is a mattress people purchase all the time off Amazon. I don't recall the brand or model, but it did have a ton of awesome reviews. Maybe another poster can help out with a link.

by Anonymousreply 27July 16, 2014 5:06 AM

I just bought a mattress in May. I researched off and on for about a year before buying anything. I got something from the Serta iSeries line. It's a coiled/memory foam hybrid. Individually coiled for support with cool gel on top for the comfort layer. It was heaven in the store. So far, it's still heaven. I've slept and overslept in it plenty.

I have latex pillows that I really like and considered a latex bed but latex has heat issues. I'd heard that and I know b/c of my pillows.

100% memory foam has the off gassing issues and I read that some of the Sealy Posturepedics had mold issues! Fuck that! Also, my dad has some type of memory foam bed and in the winter, it gets hard like a rock. I was sick with the flu once and had to switch rooms because the bed was making my body hurt more.

I eventually just made the decision to buy. It was too overwhelming and I really needed a new mattress. Overall, happy with the purchase but it did get hot once. Too soon to tell if it'll be an ongoing problem.

by Anonymousreply 28July 16, 2014 6:33 AM

I don't really think you can get a true feel of a mattress in the store. I went to a store and laid on all of them and they all felt the same to me! I couldn't really tell the $5000 one from the $600 one. I guess it's all wasted on me.

How are the iKia mattresses?

by Anonymousreply 30July 17, 2014 9:48 AM

Has anyone tried Keetsa? It's an organic mattress made out of green tea. It comes in a tiny box with wheels so you can just wheel it come. Then it expands to its full size when opened.

by Anonymousreply 46July 19, 2014 2:00 PM

You can buy a memory foam insert from Target for like $70.

That way you can try it out and if it doesn't work for you - get rid of it.

I like mine - but I also like that I can remove it when I need to.

Here are the most recent Consumer Reports mattress rankings and expected pricing. The last number (70's to 50's) is the overall score each mattress received. Pick a queen from ABC or Bravo to be your "best" mattress.

by Anonymousreply 53July 22, 2014 3:38 AM

But a good spring-coil mattress, and get a quality foam mattress pad/topper.

Spring coil mattresses with special tops... They don't last as long. Eventually, the top will wear, but the rest of the mattress will be good.

If you buy a spring coil, you can rotate it (like you're supposed to) for balanced, maximum use. If you buy a quality topper, you can have the comfort of memory foam/pillow top/whatever (and rotate it too!), and once it wears, you're only "throwing away" $100 as opposed to $600+.

This is what was recommended to me, and what I've done. I bought a decent mattress for around $450 (full), and a really nice topper from Target for like $130 (3" temperature-controlled foam). I'm still looking for the right pillows though, ugh.

Oh, and don't buy a Sealy. Eventually, the corners of the mattress compress really bad.

FIWI, I posted something similar to this in another mattress thread a few months back.

I hated the gawdawful memory foam. It was horrid, a big friggin waste of money. I can't believe that half of you people can sleep on that dreck.

I'm back to a very nice box spring and spring coil mattress.

R48? I have that Bob-o-Pedic and I love it. Slept on one at my best friend's house, fell in love with it, and never looked back. Great for someone old with a lot of aches and pains (like me).

OTOH, I've never fucked on it, so there's that.

by Anonymousreply 61November 29, 2020 2:14 AM

Op the mattress industry is sleazy like the used car industry. Just google mattress sleazy and you can read why. What I question is how many ways can mattresses be created by these mattress companies? There are new models and new names all the time, but what exactly is new about them? It's kind of like new cook books with basic recipes. How many different ways are there to make chicken soup or chocolate chip cookies?

I bought a hybrid mattress from Charles P. Rogers, right down from where Splash was, great reputation, mushy about four mos later, hated it. Then i tried Saatva, bought online, so I never got to test it. Maybe I panicked, I think it was R10 who said he loved his, but I didn't like mine. If felt like corrugated cardboard, and I was convinced their endless glowing customer reviews were largely bogus. I returned it as soon as I could.

Then I bought a Simmons Beautyrest blah blah blah from Macys. Plush, queen. It's not the mattress of my drams, but it'll do just fine and I sleep well every night. What matters more to me are pillows. I tried a lot of them. Not going into detail, but the best ever imo is the Biosense by Brookstone, with a Miracle Bamboo pillow behind it. Heavenly. And since pillows support your head, and your head is where your thoughts are, if your head is comfortable the rest of your body will take care of itself in turn.

by Anonymousreply 62November 29, 2020 2:23 AM

You will all hiss and snicker at this, but we bought our mattresses at... Home Depot! And it was a Lucid for 600 bucks.

They say its memory foam but it only has 2in or so, then three more layers of different foams so it's more a latex. Was I scared, yes I was but I knew we could take it back, but no matter, it's been wonderful and very nice without coils. We got platforms on Amazon. There has been no sagging and it's firm with just the little bit of MF. It has gel and charcoal for what that's worth, which consumer reports says is just a gimmick, they see no consensus in reports about supposedly cool gel. They also say not to spend over $1000 for a mattress, the best rated was the Casper for 1000.

by Anonymousreply 63November 29, 2020 5:51 AM

And most all mattresses except the cheapest ones are certified by third party companies to not out gas.
