Eldergays, tell me about Janet Jackson.

I heard she was relevant during my infancy.

So was Barnie...

She wears nipple shields. All the straight boys were excited by seeing her tit at the Superbowl.

Were you writing "Twilight" slash fiction at the time??

by Anonymousreply 3July 13, 2014 5:41 AM

I wish there was some kind of Janbot signal. It would be like the Bat Signal only more fabulous.

by Anonymousreply 4July 13, 2014 5:47 AM

Also born in 92, lol this thread will piss off miss janbot.

by Anonymousreply 5July 13, 2014 5:51 AM

Looking back now - she was never really that relevant.

Always overshadowed by her brother, had heaps of horrible plastic surgery like the rest of her family and unfortunately she couldn't sing.

She could dance though. But that was all.

[quote]Looking back now - she was never really that relevant.

R6 While that may be an adequate description of you; it does not apply to Miss. Jackson.

[quote]Always overshadowed by her brother

Janet started out in the shadow of Micheal and her brothers but she was able to carve out an incredible career for herself. Miss Jackson owned the 1990's.

[quote] had heaps of horrible plastic surgery

Janet has not had heaps of horrible surgery. She still looks great.

Actually, that would be Mariah Carey.

Just like Madonna owned the 1980s.

R8 You are the one who is delusional.

Janet Owned the 1990's

Rhythm Nation (1990)

[quote]Jackson released her fourth album, Rhythm Nation 1814, in September 1989..... Peaking at number one on the Billboard 200, the album was certified sixfold platinum by the RIAA and sold over fourteen million copies internationally With singles "Miss You Much", "Rhythm Nation", "Escapade", "Alright", "Come Back to Me", "Black Cat" and "Love Will Never Do (Without You)", it became the only album in history to produce number one hits in three separate calendar years, as well as the only album to achieve seven top five singles on the Hot 100...... Rhythm Nation 1814 became the highest selling album of 1990, winning a record fifteen Billboard Awards. The long-form "Rhythm Nation" music video won a Grammy Award, with Jackson also awarded "Songwriter for the Year" from BMI. Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814 World Tour became the most successful debut tour in history and set a record for the fastest sell-out of Japan's Tokyo Dome.

Janet (1993)

[quote]Jackson fulfilled her contract with A&M Records, signing a multi-million dollar contract with Virgin Records estimated between thirty-two to fifty million dollars, making her the highest paid recording artist at the time. The recording contract also established her reputation as the "Queen of Pop." Jackson's fifth studio album Janet, stylized as janet. and read "Janet, period", was released in May 1993. The record opened at number one on the Billboard 200, making Jackson the first female artist in the Nielsen SoundScan era to do so. Certified sixfold platinum by the RIAA, it sold over 20 million copies worldwide. Janet spawned five singles and four promotional singles, receiving various certifications worldwide. Lead single "That's the Way Love Goes" won the Grammy Award for Best R&B Song and topped the Billboard Hot 100 for eight consecutive weeks."Again" reached number one for three weeks, while "If" and "Any Time, Any Place" peaked in the top four. "Because of Love" and "You Want This" charted within the top ten. In July 1993, Jackson made her film debut in Poetic Justice. While the film was critically panned, her performance was described as "beguiling" and "believably eccentric."[52][53] Jackson's ballad "Again", which was written for the film, received Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations for "Best Original Song."[54][55] In September 1993, Jackson appeared topless on the cover of Rolling Stone, with her breasts covered by former husband René Elizondo, Jr. She collaborated with Michael Jackson on "Scream", the lead single from his album HIStory, released 1995. The song was written by both siblings as a response to media scrutiny. It debuted at number five on the Hot 100 singles chart, becoming the first song ever to debut within the top five. "Scream" is listed in Guinness World Records as the "Most Expensive Music Video Ever Made", costing $7 million. The clip won the 1995 Grammy Award for Best Short Form Music Video.

Design of a Decade (1995) Jackson's first compilation album, Design of a Decade 1986/1996, was released in 1995. It peaked at number three on the Billboard 200. The lead single, "Runaway", became the first song by a female artist to debut within the top ten of the Hot 100, reaching number three. Design of a Decade 1986/1996 was certified double platinum by the RIAA and sold ten million copies worldwide.

by Anonymousreply 10July 13, 2014 8:16 AM

The Velvet Rope (1997)

[quote]Jackson renewed her contract with Virgin Records for a reported $80 million the following year. The contract established her as the then-highest paid recording artist in history, surpassing the recording industry's then-unparalleled $60 million contracts earned by Michael Jackson and Madonna.....her sixth album,The Velvet Rope, released October 1997. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and was certified triple platinum, selling over ten million worldwide. Lead single "Got 'til It's Gone" was released in August 1997, featuring guest vocals from folk singer Joni Mitchell and rapper Q-Tip. The song's music video, depicting a pre-Apartheid celebration, won the Grammy Award for Best Short Form Music Video. "Together Again" became Jackson's eighth number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100, placing her on par with Elton John, Diana Ross, and The Rolling Stones. It spent a record forty-six weeks on the Hot 100 and nineteen weeks on the United Kingdom's singles chart. It sold six million copies worldwide, becoming one of the best-selling singles of all time. "I Get Lonely" peaked at number three on the Hot 100, and received a Grammy nomination for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. As Jackson's eighteenth consecutive top ten hit, it made her the only female artist to garner that achievement, surpassed only by Elvis Presley and The Beatles

[quote]The Velvet Rope: Live in Madison Square Garden, garnered more than fifteen million viewers. It surpassed the ratings of all four major networks among viewers subscribed to the channel.[79] The concert won an Emmy Award from a total of four nominations

[quote]At the 1999 World Music Awards, Jackson received the Legend Award for "outstanding contribution to the pop industry".

[quote]Janet Jackson was of course very popular and made some great songs, but Madonna and Whitney Houston were the two biggest stars of that era, and had a big cultural impact as well. Madonna, especially.

This thread is about Janet. It is not about Whitney or Madonna.

R18 then add something you stupid cunt

by Anonymousreply 19July 13, 2014 5:59 PM

Janet was very popular amongst gay men of my generation R16 ! We remembered her from good Times, and Rhythm Nation is one of the best albums EVER. "No,my first name aint Janet, its Miss Jackson if your nasty!"

by Anonymousreply 20July 13, 2014 6:03 PM

Gay men of all races loved Janet. Janet was one of the biggest dance pop divas in the world along with Madonna during the 80s and 90s, so by default she's a gay icon.

So I disagree with R16, she wasn't just an idol to black people.

by Anonymousreply 21July 13, 2014 6:22 PM

[quote]then add something you stupid cunt.

I already had added something, ass hole.

[quote]Janet Jackson was more of a "thing" among little black girls and little black gay boys. White girls and white gay boys weren't really into her like they were into Madonna.

R16 Jackson's records sells tell a different story. You honestly thing that Janet consistently dominated the pop charts in the 1990's but whites did not support her. Janet dominated the charts nationally and internationally because a portion of 12% of the population in the United States supported her. Does that sound remotely plausible to you?

by Anonymousreply 22July 13, 2014 6:40 PM

[quote]so by default she's a gay icon.

She certainly is not R21. Stop making shit up.

by Anonymousreply 23July 14, 2014 1:16 PM

I can't wait for Janbot to come in here and read you bitches. Anyone with a modicum of common sense and pop culture knowledge knows that Janet Jackson ruled the 90s.

by Anonymousreply 24July 24, 2014 5:18 PM

[quote]Looking back now - she was never really that relevant.

You're clearly speaking from a place of hate and envy. What are you, blind? If not for Janet, none of these wannabe dance/pop divas who perform intricate choreography in their videos would exist. They ALL live in the house that Janet built. And you will deal.

[quote]Always overshadowed by her brother

By the mid-'90s, Janet was THE hot star in that family. Michael was largely seen as weird, and his music was slipping. Hell, even he came to Janet for help with a song (SCREAM), and used her producers to boot. Janet has the longest-running #1 Hot 100 song in the family, is the only Jackson with an Oscar nom, is the only Jackson with 7 top 5 hits from one album, is the only Jackson with Grammy noms that span all the major categories...shall I go on?

[quote]had heaps of horrible plastic surgery like the rest of her family

How ignorant art thou?

Janet had a nose job and her breasts done. Oh, let me guess...you're probably one of those morons who subscribes to the "she had a rib removed" urban legend. What a tool.

[quote]she couldn't sing

A (stupid) matter of opinion. One doesn't have to be an over-belter to know how to sing. She uses what she has to maximum effect, and has about the best background harmonies in pop.

[quote]She could dance though.

CAN dance. And better than any one of your favorites (particularly a certain 60-year old, gap-toothed granny who needs to get off social media and act her age).

by Anonymousreply 25July 25, 2014 1:21 AM

[quote]DELUSIONAL.

Delusional my ass. In the '90s, several record labels were engaged in a bidding war over Janet. Richard Branson wooed her by taking her up in his hot air balloon, and she ultimately ended up signing with his label. Her two landmark Virgin deals ALONE (which made her the highest paid singer in history--twice) make her the undisputed queen of '90s dance/pop, certainly more than Madonna at the time, who wouldn't get another #1 album Stateside until the new millennium, and who basically was looked upon as a joke after the SEX fiasco. Janet was THE queen of '90s dance/pop.

You're an idiot. I was born in 87. I remember she had a hit single in like 2001 and that she was in one of the Nutty Professor movies. Nothing from the 90s. By contrast, the first music video I remember watching is Michael Jackson's "Black or White."

I never really heard much about Janet until I found DL, and then only thanks to Janbot. And, all snark aside, I do like Janbot and consider him a valuable member here. I don't think there's a more dedicated fan of anyone (Biebs possibly excluded) on the Internet.

by Anonymousreply 31July 25, 2014 1:47 AM

[quote]She certainly is not [R21]. Stop making shit up.

Um, she most certainly IS. Not only has she made a record that was basically a love letter in part to the gay community and saved many a gay person's life (THE VELVET ROPE), she's also been awarded numerous times over the years for her support of gay causes and charitable works, has had many drag impersonators over the years, and her concerts are always wall to wall with gays and lesbians. Many gay celebs are fans of hers as well (Ellen adores her and Anderson Cooper fangurled beyond belief when she appeared on his show a couple of years ago).

Well, R31, you were born right when she hit her stride career-wise, so I can see how you wouldn't know much about her material until the time you were a pre-teen (although I'm sure you heard "That's the Way Love Goes" and "If" a time or two). Her 2001 single "All For You" was the longest-running Hot 100 #1 that year. And the Nutty Prof. song you referred to, "Doesn't Really Matter", made Janet the first artist to score a #1 in the '80s, '90s and 2000s.

by Anonymousreply 34July 25, 2014 1:56 AM

"All for You" was the single I was thinking of, r34. I looked it up and think I may have even bought the album.

I YouTubed the other two. "That's the Way Love Goes" was definitely familiar, but I don't think I ever caught "If."

by Anonymousreply 35July 25, 2014 2:21 AM

I remember seeing her first time in Fame where she played a shy nerdy girl. I felt that family name was the only reason she got the role so I didn't really like her.

Then Nasty came out and wow, what a change from that shy little girl in Fame. The song was super tight and I liked it a lot. Not enough to buy the album, though, but now I took her seriously. But when I was in high school Rhythm Nation came out and that just made me nuts. That album I did buy and loved it. I also bought the VHS video and watched it countless times. All those videos were just gorgeous and suited the songs perfectly.

After Rhythm Nation... nothing. I didn't really like her sound anymore since to me she'd always been about dance and beats. There were some songs later that I enjoyed hugely (e.g. If) but she never really rose up there with the my most favorite artists. But still I love and respect her a lot.

How is that not true, R40?

by Anonymousreply 41July 25, 2014 3:16 AM

Well, if you want to be technical, she was a very normal-sized teen and young adult but gained weight when she started taking birth control pills when she was married to James DeBarge, and for most of her adulthood she's struggled with her weight. Most of the time, she's in shape with (particularly when she's promoting an album and touring), but during downtime she eats what she wants and sometimes gains weight. She gained a lot of weight on purpose back in 2005 for the Lee Daniels movie TENNESSEE, but later backed out of the film when it was time to promote her album and the part went to Mariah Carey instead. Sidenote, Janet even took guitar lessons for the movie. She lost the weight in six months, and the result became the biggest selling US magazine cover of all time.

One thing I liked about her. Michael was such an exhibitionist but she kept her private life private. You would only find out she had been married when she got divorced. She had an affair with McBongo but kept it secret for years. A little discretion is the better part of valor.. or something.

Srsly, Janet did a cover of a Joni Mitchell song, Beat of Black Wings. It was never released, but it's out there. How do I find an mp3?

by Anonymousreply 54July 26, 2014 2:22 AM

[quote]Michael was such an exhibitionist but she kept her private life private.

I always loved that about Janet, she has always been extremely elusive about her personal life (ahem take notes Mariah!), despite being one of the most famous people in the world since childhood. She didn't need anything but the music to captivate people.

[quote]Why did she never have kids? Seems like the type who would have had a whole houseful.

I've also wondered this about her. I think when you come from a family that big, it changes your perspective on parenthood a lot.

by Anonymousreply 55July 26, 2014 2:27 AM

She once said in a magazine interview that there was a time when she wanted a whole houseful of kids like her mother. I guess her perspective on the subject changed as she got older.

[quote]How do I find an mp3?

You can do a Youtube-to-mp3 conversion of the Youtube video of it. There are several video conversion sites on the net.

[quote]I wonder whether fassbender would fuck her

Whiteboys love her. Janet likes them too. She used to have a thing for Robbie Williams, and said that he was a perfect gentleman when she met him once. She was seen dining with Colin Farrell years ago. Deniro wanted her at one time. Kevin Costner was practically drooling over her on a Wetten Dass episode in 2001. And then there's McBongo, who definitely had her.

by Anonymousreply 57July 26, 2014 2:48 AM

Michael and all his beards as publicity stunts. You would have thought Janet would have wanted publicity for fucking McBongo who was a big star back then (well he is again now). But she kept it all quiet. You've got to respect a superstar who isn't a publicity whore like Madonna, etc. Janet got all the class in that family.

by Anonymousreply 58July 26, 2014 2:51 AM

That's what I love about her too. She never was a famewhore like your Madonnas and your JLos. She grew up with fame, so it was like second nature to her. And the mystery of her private life just adds to her appeal. If anyone is an Elusive Chanteuse (I'm looking at YOU, Mariah), it's Janet.

[quote]I was a big record collector in the 80s, the 90s, and the first few years of this millennium.

r60 you must not have been that big of a collector if you missed Rhythm Nation. RN was the best selling album of 1990, and its singles charted for three calendar years, the first album in history to do that. It was also hugely influential to dance and R&B music for the next several years.

by Anonymousreply 64July 26, 2014 3:11 AM

R64, I collected music that I liked and found interesting. I never bought a single record because of its place on a record chart. In fact, I tended to shun any music that was hugely popular and played in every club.

by Anonymousreply 65July 26, 2014 3:16 AM

[quote]Janbot, please set this old kweeny cunt straight.

I was just about to.

I hardly believe R60 is any kind of music collector. Any casual terrestrial radio listener would have heard a Janet Jackson song since 1987, let alone a serious music collector. She has 10 Hot 100 #1s, dozens of top 10s and tons of dance and R&B hits. And, as R64 said, RN 1814 was the best selling album of 1990, and its singles made history. Her biggest hits were in the '80s, '90s and the early 2000s. She was all over radio then. RHYTHM NATION, ESCAPADE, THAT'S THE WAY LOVE GOES, BLACK CAT, LET'S WAIT AWHILE, SCREAM, ALL FOR YOU, IF, TOGETHER AGAIN...you're lying if you say the last song you heard from her was THE PLEASURE PRINCIPLE.

Listen up, chump...

I DJ'd in a gay bar in 1987, then moved on to a gay club in 1988. Guess that sort of ruined Janet Jackson for me. Every other obnoxious, inebriated queen would be pestering me to play Janet Jackson and Madonna all fucking night long. It was years before I could listen to a Madonna record again. Where's the love for Jenny Lind?

[quote]Johanna Maria Lind (6 October 1820–2 November 1887), better known as Jenny Lind, was a Swedish opera singer, often known as the "Swedish Nightingale". One of the most highly regarded singers of the 19th century, she performed in soprano roles in opera in Sweden and across Europe, and undertook an extraordinarily popular concert tour of America beginning in 1850. No. What I'm saying is that a lot of men wanted her. You can count on little more than one hand the amount of men she's been with/linked to in all her years in the industry. Same can't be said for just about every major pop diva.

by Anonymousreply 90July 26, 2014 5:05 AM

Why do so many white DL'ers keep coming for Janet? So what if you're Vadge stans; Janet is simply a better talent and better/more likable person.

Janet has fans of all backgrounds but the racists on DL really are something else.

by Anonymousreply 91July 26, 2014 5:18 AM

I think that's part of it. Madonna fans, just like the cow they adore, hate other female pop stars, particularly ones they know are better looking and more talented.

R100/R101, you're embarrassingly, indefatigably lame. LAME. I don't even think LAME is an accurate enough word to describe just how LAME you really are. Janet Jackson IS the blueprint for today's modern renaissance female dance-pop star (singer, dancer, actress). They've just about ALL given props to her and have paid tribute to her in their own works and personal style. The evidence has been shown to you time and time and time again, and yet you still go on with your empty proclamations of "She's not remembered," "she's a hasbeen," yadda-yadda-yadda. Why don't you take your tiresome "insults" and go crawl back into your mommy's dank, dark, smelly basement. You're clearly not ready for the world.

Oh, and...

by Anonymousreply 103July 26, 2014 3:48 PM

Upon trolling various pop forums (such as Flop Of The Pops,ATRL,Popjustice etc.) I`ve noticed that practically nobody there(younger pop stans) knows who she is ,they`re all like `Who`s that, never heard of her` `I maybe know one or two songs and that`s it`. And she basically created their `faves`(videos, image, dancing, everything) ,even more than Madonna,I`d say.

by Anonymousreply 104July 26, 2014 3:55 PM

Those are probably the 13-16 year-old set, who were still knee high to a grasshopper when Janet released her last studio album. And you are correct, she created their faves.

They had many contemporary artists in their mix - and more Frozen than I ever wanted to hear - but the "older" artist they played - far more than Mooriah, or Christina Aguilera, or anyone else - was Janet.

Who said anything about having to win an award for vocal ability? She's a dance/pop artist. Now sit your stupid ass down somewhere and shut the fuck up.

by Anonymousreply 171July 27, 2014 8:34 PM

[quote]Janbot have you ever met Janet?

Briefly, two times. The first was in Harlem when she was signing copies of DAMITA JO. She was gorgeous and very petite, and her smile is even more radiant in person. Her choreographer Gil was sitting right next to her. The second time was at Virgin Megastore in Times Square when she was signing copies of 20 YO. She asked me how to spell my name (there are several ways to spell it), and personalized the disc for me. Gil was there (again, ugh!), and Jermaine Dupri was not too far off. Her handlers specified that we could not take photos with her or give her any kind of gifts, but she was so pleasant that I'm sure she wouldn't have minded. The line both times was wrapped around the building, and I'm sure they didn't allow of time simply because of the crowds.

Janet's collaborations with Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, former members of Prince's protege band The Time, is what catapulted her into stardom. They were on a roll in the late 80's through the early 90's producing all sorts of hit songs for various artists.

Incidentally, Love Will Never Do Without You was originally meant to be a duet between Janet Jackson and Prince (hence the parts of the song that are sung in a lower voice), but he backed out of it due to being busy working on the Batman soundtrack.

She was also known for constantly gaining weight, then losing a bunch real fast. She looked ridiculous in the video for Escapade. It was beyond obvious they were trying to paint her face "skinny" with the garish makeup job she had, not to mention she's wearing a black trench coat in the middle of a sweltering hot desert.

I was supposed to go see her on her Rhythm Nation tour, but she cancelled the show due to being "sick" - yet she appeared on the MTV music awards like 2 days later looking fine.

The Velvet Rope was the last album of hers that I bought, and I wasn't really crazy about it. It just sounded uninspired/unfocused to me for some reason.

by Anonymousreply 207July 28, 2014 9:30 PM

[quote]R202, you forgot this photo of Janet, hon.

Actually, I didn't forget about it, sweetie (although she does look pretty good there). The post I was responding to at R202 didn't call for a nude photo. In other words, if you were trying to be insulting then, well, you pretty much failed. Darling.

[quote]The Velvet Rope was the last album of hers that I bought, and I wasn't really crazy about it. It just sounded uninspired/unfocused to me for some reason.

You're clearly in the minority, Tommy. It's her most critically-acclaimed album for a reason...it's brilliant.

[quote]She looked ridiculous in the video for Escapade.

No she didn't. She looked radiant.

[quote]It was beyond obvious they were trying to paint her face "skinny" with the garish makeup job she had, not to mention she's wearing a black trench coat in the middle of a sweltering hot desert.

A) They did not "paint her face 'skinny'." If you had seen her perform the song on the AMAs in early 1990, you would've seen that her figure was actually pretty trim. No skinny paint needed.

B) It was a jacket. I suggest you look up "trench coat" in Google to see what one really looks like.

C) It was not a sweltering hot desert. It was the Old Mexico set on the backlot of Universal Studios. You know, the same one where Lady Gaga's "Judas" and many other films and videos were filmed?

Janbot's psychosis is mesmerizing to me. Her delusions, her endless anger, her frantic and continuous posts all point toward a very serious mental disturbance.

If only Janbot could go out more, maybe meet some friends, go to some clubs and see that music has entirely changed since the bubblegum tripe Janet Jackson was famous for---she'd learn something new.

She might even be able to become mentally healthy once again.

[quote]Janbot's psychosis is mesmerizing to me. Her delusions, her endless anger, her frantic and continuous posts all point toward a very serious mental disturbance.

You obviously take yourself WAY too seriously. To the point of being insufferable, actually.

[quote]If only Janbot could go out more, maybe meet some friends, go to some clubs

I go out on a daily, have a plethora of friends AND acquaintances, and I club quite frequently. Not as much as I used to, but still just enough that I don't exactly qualify as a complete home body (although I do actually prefer being home at times). But your concern is touching.

[quote]music has entirely changed since the bubblegum tripe Janet Jackson was famous for

Bubblegum tripe? Janet Jackson is known for her sonically innovate albums and hit singles, which helped to propel her into the pop music stratosphere. Albums like CONTROL, RN 1814, janet. and THE VELVET ROPE are far from what anyone with half a brain and any sense of good musical taste would call "bubblegum tripe." Are you confusing her with Tiffany? Perhaps Stacey Q?

[quote]she'd learn something new.

Honey, anything I need to learn you DEFINITELY couldn't teach me.

Musically relevant? Madonna? On what planet? MANdonna performed at the Superbowl a couple of years ago, and soon after that performance, her laughably corny CD dropped. And then...

Crickets...

NO ONE BOUGHT THE CD! She had to give most of them away to her pitiful fanbase of stooges when they bought overpriced tickets to her Ol' Lady Show. Her MDNA holds the distinction of being THE fastest-plummeting CD in its second week out of all time. And rightfully so. It's horrid. Janet's DISCIPLINE, for all the flack it got about how it sold, doesn't even hold this "worthy" distinction. So yeah, Madonna is musically relevant, alright. Relevant to the tired old queens still supporting her. And ONLY them. Which is sad.

Well...

Madonna played not too far from where I live too. For months, it was billed that she would be playing the M&T Bank Stadium, but when the time drew nearer, the venue was downgraded to the Verizon Center in DC. And do you know why? Because the amount of people willing to shell out money to see her isn't as big as her wrinkled old head and warped sense of hubris had initially assumed it would be. Imagine my glee when I heard about her downgrade of venue on the radio. I'm sure her shitty MD-CRAP-NA CD didn't help matters much.

Janet's UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL TOUR did remarkably well for a tour that contained no new material, and it did well on a WORLDWIDE scale, selling out at multiple stops. And, about those stadiums...

The UCAP tour achieved several attendance records, and was among the most attended concerts in the Reliant Stadium's history. THE RELIANT STADIUM.

She also played the YAS ARENA in Abu Dhabi, which is pretty big and almost stadium-like, so, sorry to disappoint your delusions of Janet's last tour being a failure but...it wasn't. Here's a photo of Janet's stop in Abu Dhabi during the UCAP Tour...

And Janet was never fired from any label. With Virgin, her (legendary) contract had been fulfilled, and she ASKED to be let out of her Def Jam contract, because they didn't treat her with the respect that is warranted by a Queen.

Janet was Billboard poison. Her fans had forgotten about her, music moved on, she got fat and ugly. More detritus in the world of music.

Jabba once said she was a hood rat from Harlem (her words, not mine). What would one expect?

Wow that Vadge stan is just a racist piece of shit, spewing filth in any thread it enters. Not surprised. Only a Vadge stan could be so detestable.

I'm only using the words Jabba used earlier to describe herself. You have a problem with that, take it up with Jabba.

Who?

[quote]once said she was a hood rat from Harlem (her words, not mine).

If you're referring to me, then you're very much mistaken. I am from no where near Harlem. MAJOR faux pas on your part.

The "Let's discuss" poster is not me, but I do like him.

I remember her being a mega superstar of music from the late '80s to the early 2000s, but then her titty popped out at the Superbowl and it was like she may as well have never been famous at all. All the misogynists, racists, and Puritans were completely appalled and it was like they all collectively vowed never to utter her name again. From what I hear, Les Moonves (owner of CVS and co-president of Viacom) made it a personal mission to bring her down after the Superbowl and destroy her legacy. He apparently ordered VH1/MTV and Viacom-owned radio stations to quit playing her music.

None of her songs have even reached 100 million yet on Spotify which is pretty surprising to me. It is almost unheard of for a supposed legend. Lord knows how relevant she'd be now if the infamous wardrobe malfunction never happened. But with the new Britney Spears documentary showcasing how he treated her after their breakup, people are starting to look at the way he treated Janet after the Superbowl as well. Also, they're examining how and why she got all the negative publicity and her career was trashed whereas he got away unscathed. They even got one off her albums charting this week. So now that the documentary is creating buzz around her name again, maybe they'll start to revisit her catalogue and she can make some sort of comeback.

It was long ago and far away... Ronald Reagan was our president then, and the Twin Towers proudly stood watch over Manhattan....

I've seen both Janet Jackson and Britney Spears in concert. I'm not sure who was the best lipsyncer. Neither sang a note live at either show but I Janet was definitely the best dancer.

I miss her. What happened to her at the Superbowl was a tragedy and it's terrible that she was driven into near obscurity because of it. These days I think it would be a completely different story. The Republican "think of the children" prudes would be offended of course but they always are. Meanwhile those same kids were upstairs listening to "WAP" (Wet Ass Pussy) and made it the #1 song for weeks. But I think a lot of Twitter would have her back and not let big media figures get away with ridiculing her and blacklisting her like they did back then.

It depends on your background. I'm black and Janet never went away like she did in mainstream (white) pop culture. She was still being played on urban stations, was still on the cover of black magazines, was starring in Tyler Perry movies, Good Times would still air in reruns and BET would still play Nutty Professor and Poetic Justice. Her songs "I Want You" and "Call On Me" got decent airplay on BET at least late night. And the blacklisting was finally lifted when she released Discipline because "Feedback" got a ton of airplay on MTV and BET and she was promoting it on TRL and 106 & Park. But by that point, Rihanna, Beyoncé and Ciara took her spot as dance-R&B divas.
