Mary Tyler Moore has three months to live!
by Anonymous | reply 127 | November 28, 2019 3:27 PM |
Article is a month old so make that two months.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | July 9, 2014 6:39 PM |
But she might just make it after all!
by Anonymous | reply 2 | July 9, 2014 6:59 PM |
I wouldn´t be surprised if ANY of the remaining stars of that show died within 3 months.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | July 9, 2014 7:01 PM |
If true, Valerie Harper will, ironically, out-live her.
Anyway, I don't know why Betty White won't return my calls. I've been on "Everyone Loves Raymond", after all.
She only wants to work with nobodys, apparently.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | July 9, 2014 7:05 PM |
Maybe because I'm too drunk to even remember to spell my last name correctly.

Estelle Getty and a male actor who recently died (help me with the name) had dementia that was Parkinson's related, but not Alzheimer's.

They had some domestic dispute recently but who knows what it was over. Could have just been her dementia. They've been married for about 30 years and I had never heard much in the way of marital problems.

by Anonymous | reply 39 | July 9, 2014 10:42 PM |
Mary was just too wound up back then and she'd never follow my advice to be as easy as pie.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | July 9, 2014 11:20 PM |
Is Mare's first husband Grant Tinker still married to his former (much younger, of course) secretary?
by Anonymous | reply 41 | July 9, 2014 11:26 PM |
Like she can't afford full time medical staff to live with her and redo the home to make it safer. Why would such a rich person ever have to go to a nursing home. Of course if she did it would be with a private suite and her own staff there too. Rich people don't go to the Medicare/Medicaid type of nursing homes most of us would have to go to if something happened.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | July 10, 2014 12:16 AM |
Where can you hear it, R34?
by Anonymous | reply 43 | July 10, 2014 12:27 AM |
Check one of the musical theatre groups and someone should have a copy for trade or sale. It's worth it...it was so fucked up after Edward Albee got hold of the script. Some nice songs though. In the final version, Holly Golightly ( Mary Tyler Moore) was not a person but a fictional character that struggling writer Richard Chamberlain used for his novel. That was the basis of the plot.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | July 10, 2014 1:58 AM |
I agree r42, and people prefer to die in their own home. With her dementia especially, the strange sights and sounds of a move would be upsetting. She knows it too, that's why she keeps resisting it.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | July 10, 2014 6:49 AM |
Hopefully her fondness for Sarah Palin was part of the early stages.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | July 10, 2014 7:02 AM |
I was thinking the same thing, r46. Ed Asner said she changed a lot in that regard, more conservative, than when he knew her younger.

by Anonymous | reply 48 | July 10, 2014 12:01 PM |
I guess you didn't actually SEE the movie, R48, which would have answered your question.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | July 10, 2014 12:11 PM |
I wish Mary well. Love her. The MTM show was the best TV show ever.

by Anonymous | reply 51 | July 10, 2014 3:14 PM |
The Breakfast at Tiffany's title song is good! And Mary does a good job with it.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | July 10, 2014 3:17 PM |
Dementia and Alzheimer's do not kill people that quickly, more's the pity. They can live for years or decades after the diagnosis, draining the family's emotional and financial resources all the while.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | July 10, 2014 7:47 PM |
Mary's physical health has been in decline for many years. She doesn't talk about it a lot.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | July 10, 2014 7:53 PM |
Isn't she almost blind too?
by Anonymous | reply 55 | July 10, 2014 8:25 PM |
Tinker was her second husband. Her first was named Richard Meeker and he was the Father of the son who shot himself.
by Anonymous | reply 56 | July 10, 2014 8:38 PM |
Wow, that B'way show was one stinkeroo. What were tickets then, maybe 12 bucks for the best seat? Still so not worth it. I'm sorry but MTM does not sing well, certainly not for the B'way stage. At best she can carry a tune. I don't know what she or whoever produced that show were thinking. Man, I'm shocked at just how bad it was. Poor MTM, how embarrassing that had to have been. I'm glad she had such a huge comeback with the MTM Show.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | July 10, 2014 8:58 PM |
Lucky Mary
by Anonymous | reply 58 | July 10, 2014 9:04 PM |
David Merrick closed it in previews. he didn't want to put audiences to sleep. When the show was first announced it was called HOLLY GOLIGHTLY,later after many revisions ithe title became BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S. Everyone thought it would be a big hit featuring MTM fresh off of Dick Van Dyke Shoe and Richard Chamberlain from Dr. Kildare. Musical was booked at the Majestic, one of Broadway's bigger houses. Yes, it was a stinker. Before CARRIR came along, BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S and KELLY were the crowned jewels of Broadway flops. Both shows are displayed with framed window cards the wall of flops at Joe Allen.

Well it will be interesting since Saturday is Broadway Barks - a charity event run by MTM and Bernadette Peters. MTM is supposed to appear and act as co-host with Bernadette - it'll be interesting to see if she's there or doesn't show.
Bernadette seems to have done all the press this year..
Last year she cancelled at the last minute supposedly due to a broken shoulder and Harvey Firestein took over co-hosting duties.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | July 11, 2014 11:36 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 67 | July 12, 2014 1:07 AM |
Who?
by Anonymous | reply 68 | July 12, 2014 1:10 AM |
You're likely right about motives, R67, but Alzheimer's can move quickly or seem to - it doesn't affect everyone the same. Plus she could have been ill for a while. If her weight is down that far, she could be starting the slide - other issues come up, such as swallowing problems or digestion capacity. Plus there's a real risk of aspiration and resulting infection issues and congestion.
I've been there with a parent and friends. One went in about six months, after living alone at home until things snapped.

Well MTM was a no-show at Broadway Barks for a second year in a row. All the press made it seem like she was going to be there and it wasn't announced until the event began. No reason - just Mary could not be there. So that's two years in a row.
Co-hosting in her place - James Franco - which is a story for another thread.
This makes me thing the tabloids really are on the right track with her health situation.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | July 13, 2014 11:58 AM |
Maybe she still has "good days" and they were hoping yesterday would be one. Plus, unless she's declared incompetent, she's free to do whatever she wants.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | July 13, 2014 1:02 PM |
Offstage, Bernadette told someone she had spoken to "Robert" and MTM won't be seen in public again - ever. Who's got her in the 2014 death pool?
by Anonymous | reply 78 | July 13, 2014 1:16 PM |
This means her "Mary Tyler Moore Show" reunion on Hot in Cleveland last season was her last public appearance...
by Anonymous | reply 79 | July 13, 2014 1:17 PM |
Mary Tyler Moore was the one who told Rhoda she should strike as they'd "They could never throw you off a show if it was named after her."
by Anonymous | reply 80 | July 13, 2014 1:33 PM |
And yet Valerie Harper WAS thrown off BOTH shows named after her!
As I recall, "Rhoda" was canceled in the middle of it's fourth or fifth season, and "Valerie".....well.....
by Anonymous | reply 81 | July 13, 2014 1:44 PM |
And Valerie cried all the way to the bank after winning her lawsuit for millions and a percentage of the show's profits.
She probably made about the same money as if she'd stayed on the show, but didn't have to lift a finger for it.
by Anonymous | reply 82 | July 13, 2014 1:49 PM |
Yes, what Bernadette P. said is correct, no more public appearances for Mary. She is waiting to die and will do that in private.
by Anonymous | reply 83 | July 13, 2014 1:55 PM |
What that fool article doesn't mention is that Mary is blind from the Diabetes, which is one of the horrible side effects of that disease. Mary is not a nut. She has fallen because of her sight problems. That filthy National Enquirer should be sued for this despicable story-telling of a classic TV icon. Those dirty son of a bitches!
by Anonymous | reply 84 | July 13, 2014 2:01 PM |
She was obviously ill during the Hot in Cleveland episode. They couldn't even show all her reaction shots, and she only managed one line.
It does seem as though her illness has progressed really quickly. She seemed fine in 2012 when she appeared with Dick Van Dyke, maybe a little unsteady but okay. Then last September it was obvious she had health problems, by January we were reading about all those 911 calls and her husband being an asshole, and now this.
by Anonymous | reply 85 | July 13, 2014 2:05 PM |
I was very sadden by finding this thread. Having worked with many individuals suffering from Dementia and Alzheimer's I feel great sadness for Mary and for anyone faced with this horrible illness. At least she has a supportive husband, a medical doctor who will stay with her and she is a very wealthy woman, who can remain in her home, which is very important. Most individuals do not have the funds to remain at home and to be cared for and supported by people who truly care about them. I wish to point out that having Dementia and Alzheimer's does not end an individual's life within three (3) months. There is no time limit. Humans can live for years in this mindless fog of confusion and despair. This horrible disease will affect 50 to 60 percent of us living past the age of 85. I have worked with a number of gay men who have lived on for years, a couple for decades after their diagnosis, draining what was left of their family's emotional and financial resources. All of these men were somehow able to escape other diseases such as HIV/AIDS, Hep A,B & C, in addition to all the sexual/social diseases that raged during the late 1970s and onward only to suffer from Dementia and Alzheimer's in their "golden years", along with the emotional disorders that went with them, such as anxiety and depression. As we all live longer and healthier lives we must remember that while we are able - along with seeking a cure for HIV/AIDS, Cancer, heart disease and so many other diseases we must continue to research the causes and the interventions needed to combat Dementia and Alzheimer! At least for Mary; due to archives, her television shows and films will live on!

That, my friend, is called ironing.
by Anonymous | reply 87 | July 13, 2014 5:10 PM |
But I DON'T WANT to live longer! Miserable be the horrors of having an ancient, infirmed body rank with age, liver spots, sagging flesh, bad teeth, white hair, ugly hideous unsexy unattractive wrinkles and folds, unable to be athletically sodomized proper and enjoy it. No, let me die before the horrible man-made population control diseases kick in. Why bother living longer in this screwy world anyway? Just watch an evening news broadcast all the way through! No thanks.
I wish we could just go to death houses to die like in Soylent Green when Edward G. Robinson decided he'd had enough of the madness. He went into a nice room filled with a peaceful melody and images of nature surrounding him after he drank a delicious beverage that killed him. Then they rolled him out to be made into Soylent Green crisps.
What a lovely way to dyeeeeee

I know some suspected her tacking to the right politically had to do with her illness but I don't know if that's so. I remember her taking Dubya to task over stem cell research or something, and then a year or two later she claimed to have turned libertarian.
Very sad, regardless.

They both will receive a fuss, but we will be sad how much smaller it is than we thought, since most people under 30, sadly, do not know who they are or know little about them.
(Especially with the travesty of how the Burnett show has been handled on DVD, not really syndicated recently, etc.)
by Anonymous | reply 107 | July 18, 2014 2:11 PM |
It's a whole new world now R107 and a younger generation just isn't interested in MTM, or Carol Burnett, Lucy or Rose Marie.
Also the humor of that time is no longer contemporary. Personally between YOU (R107) and ME, I just can't watch the Carol Burnett show anymore, it's humor just doesn't make me laugh. I remember when I was a kid I LOVED the Carol Burnett show and I would roar when the cast would all start laughing at something that Harvey or Tim would do. Now, however, I find it boring. As I do MTM and at times Lucy. It's fall somewhere between watching Judy Canova or the Our Gang movies. It's time has come and gone.
As for MTM, I again enjoyed it as a kid (after all I only had 4 other TV channels to chose from) but again I feel my taste has changed.
The real issues are that they have a quality of life NOW and are able to function and lead as independent life as possible.

It annoyed me when critics and viewers would equate "Murphy Brown" with "The Mary Tyler Moore Show". "Murphy Brown" was a very pale imitation of a well written and superbly acted sitcom. Candice Bergen winning the Emmy year after year only proved to cheapen the award.
by Anonymous | reply 112 | July 20, 2014 7:39 PM |
R112, I've never heard of anyone equating those two shows. Comparing, yes, which makes sense. I agree with you that MTM was a better show all around in terms of both writing and acting, but I also liked Murphy Brown.
by Anonymous | reply 113 | July 20, 2014 7:42 PM |
R112 - weirdly, I was just thinking of this today. Candice Bergen winning that damn Emmy 5 times was outrageous. It was a pleasant show, but she was NOT that great.

From the link:
"TV legend MARY TYLER MOORE is exhibiting symptoms similar to dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, and friends fear she could be dead in three months!"
My grandmother had dementia. You don't die in three months after showing symptoms. Granny lived for 12 years after first showing signs, twelve long, terrible, horrible years. It would have been a blessing to die in three months. Moore also has diabetes. That will likely take her first.

I think one of the reasons The MTM Show is still watchable today and Murphy Brown not so much is that Murphy was so political. That kind of humor is only funny in its time. When I was a kid there was a satirical news show on called That Was The Week That Was. My dad loved it. It was very popular than, in the 1960s but as funny as it was I'm sure today it wouldn't even get a smile out of anyone watching because it was all about the politics of its day.
It's kind of like this extremely popular record album that came out around 1962 about the Kennedys called "The First Family" Comedian Vaughn Meader did a great job as JFK. I remember the adults listening to it and howling with laughter. I'm sure today it would not get a snicker and not because Kennedy was killed but because it's too dated.
by Anonymous | reply 120 | July 21, 2014 12:58 AM |
I still like Carol but agree her show is kind of boring, except for the Mama skits. LOVE VICKI LAWRENCE!
I think the first four seasons of MTM still hold up, esp. the ones with Rhoda and Phyllis. Some of the office oriented ones or the ones with Ted and Murray as the focus seem lame.
I can still watch Lucy and laugh or marvel at her and Viv's acting and timing.
It is a new world. But today's Britney Spears/Justin Timbelake and Tina Fey are tomorrow's WHO?
