People who believed their own hype and failed miserably:

Gaga and Seth MacFarlane raise your hands.

Terrance Trent D'arby?

by Anonymousreply 1June 19, 2014 3:47 AM

At first I believed my own hype, quite my hugely successful show and failed miserably.

Then I discovered sunglass acting and found work.

Kisses to OP! Every time I look into an online magazine I have to witness the latest abominable costume of this misfortuned music has-been. Her face, her dwarfism, those buck teeth and her awful lyrics make me want to push her into a bus.

I'd like to have half the money Seth McFarlane made by "fail(ing) miserably."

Mr. T. He really couldn't do anything but show-up.

by Anonymousreply 16June 19, 2014 11:03 PM

Are we only talking about people who failed miserably quickly, or are we including people who lasted awhile but them believing their own hype ended up destroying their careers?

If we can include the latter: Prince, Diana Ross, Madonna, and Mariah Carey are good examples. Yes, they had long careers, but ultimately them believing their own hype and thinking they could just put out shit with no effort and thinking people would still care is ultimately what destroyed their careers.

by Anonymousreply 17June 19, 2014 11:21 PM

The black guy in "Miami Vice"

by Anonymousreply 18June 19, 2014 11:29 PM

Can we include the ones who merely ended up sorely disappointed? Like the orange pub end guy from CSI Miami?

Shelley Long?

Oh yeah.... Philip Michael Thomas.

He had some rabid fans, but I always found him to be so unattractive.

Back in the day, I posted on Media Domain/OLTL that I've seen better looking guys at the Waffle House.

by Anonymousreply 30June 20, 2014 12:50 AM

Farrah Fawcett.

by Anonymousreply 31June 20, 2014 12:51 AM

I wouldn't put Gaga in that category. She's dealing with a serious health issue, and is newly sober.

Lupus is no fucking joke. She backed off saying she actually had it (only had 'indicators') because of her career, but I think she does and it's curtailed her creativity.

Dane Cook is another one I wouldn't write off. He's apparently been doing theatre, and he's supposedly very good. A few collegues have mentioned seeing him and being impressed.

No one in the industry will touch him, though, because he's perceived to be a has-been. He needs someone like Quentin to take a chance on him. He should've had the Bradley Cooper role in Silver Linings Playbook.

by Anonymousreply 32June 20, 2014 12:55 AM

Many of those rabid fans are still out, R30. Some of them still think it's 1993. They're insufferable. There was a time that I thought he had charisma (if not classic good looks). But he huffed and puffed that away years ago. Now he mostly looks bored. He went on a health kick a few years back and looked good for about five minutes. Now his body is as flabby as his acting.

David Caruso is like a damn roach. Every time I think he's sunk his career he bounces back. I was surprised they didn't have Horatio Cane take over CSI Original Recipe after Laurence Fishburne left. Ted Danson is on about five minutes each episode, and therefore, doesn't leave much of an impression.

by Anonymousreply 33June 20, 2014 12:58 AM

David Caruso left a hit series and tail between his legs, returned after his screen "debut"

Alec Baldwin, with his threat to leave the country if a Republican was elected (Bush).

Suzanne Sommers, belived all the hype about how sexy she was..buckteeth and all..ended up with thigh master, Las Vegas revue, and now more infomercials..greedy for more money.

by Anonymousreply 55June 20, 2014 1:24 AM

He's a dick, yes, and his recent movie bombed, but I really don't see how Seth McFarlane is a failure. Or, are you just referencing the movie?

Rachel Maddow.... slip sliding in the ratings.

by Anonymousreply 57June 20, 2014 1:27 AM

Shannen Doherty

Faye Dunaway

Sarah Michelle Gellar

Each is talented, IMO, but Hollywood only overlooks difficult divas when they're young and bankable. Gellar might have one last hit left in her if she could only learn to pick better projects. I watched Ringer and that thing with Robin Williams. Both shows were embarrassing (though Ringer was addicting in its badness).

The last I saw Shannen was on some infomercial about online colleges. Oh, girl.

Faye Dunaway should embrace Mommie Dearest and sign up for those Hollywood autograph shows. She would make a killing. Her ego probably won't let her.

R41, Her "health problems" are complications from her acting as Perez Hilton's surrogate. Not drugs. Not Lupus.

by Anonymousreply 66June 20, 2014 2:24 AM

r66, is that common knowledge? I don't really follow her.

Not saying you're lying, but I find it hard to believe she'd do that with her surgery, blood count, etc. not to mention the drugs.

by Anonymousreply 67June 20, 2014 2:30 AM

R67, the "surgery" was a lie. She had to go on bed rest due to complications. The drug abuse and fallout with Perez followed not long after delivering the demon spawn.

by Anonymousreply 71June 20, 2014 5:07 AM

No, R65, Lady Gaga is a character in Emile Zola's novel [italic]Nana.[/italic] She's the older woman who used to be a courtesan like the younger Nana is; she's sort of a cautionary tale, as it were.

by Anonymousreply 72June 20, 2014 5:29 AM

I can see McFarlane being considered a failure in that he never achieved everything he thought he was owed. He's not the entertainment superpersonality he thinks he is. When he does get lucky, like get a movie deal or the Oscar hosting gig, he schmutzes it up. The guy is rich and has had some successes, but still, he's got has-been written all over him.

Not James Cameron.....yet

If the frigid response to his documentary is a harbinger of things to come, shit could really hit the fan if Avatar bombs.

by Anonymousreply 82August 19, 2014 6:45 AM

R82: [italic]Dances With Smurfahontas and Broomsticks[/italic]...oops, I mean [italic]Avatar[/italic], is the highest-grossing film ever. Do you mean the sequels?

by Anonymousreply 83August 19, 2014 6:49 AM

R83, yes, Avatar 2, 3, and 4. But I bet it'll repeat itself again. Cameron goes long and over budget. Hollywood prays he'll fail this time and the press reports a possible misfire and production horror stories like for all his other megafilms. Then, they come out and he'll have the top five grossing films of all time and be king of the world again. I wonder if people will ever be over him and his ego...or, as Arnold says, James Cameron is always right.

by Anonymousreply 84August 19, 2014 6:54 AM

Check out the Philip Michael Thomas bio on IMDB. It's brilliant!

Selected excerpts:

Considered by long-time friends and family members alike to be one of the most compassionate, spiritual, and generous men they've ever known...

Despite world-wide stardom as an actor of both stage and screen, it is music that is PMT's biggest passion.

One long-time friend recently referred to the musical side of PMT as "an undiscovered diamond."

During the stratospheric years of Miami Vice (1984-1989), PMT released two highly regarded albums: Livin' the BOOK of My Life (1985) and Somebody (1988), both on his own Starship Records label, with distribution by industry giant Atlantic Records.

PMT loves Florida and has chosen to make his home there instead of L.A. or New York as do most of his colleagues. Naturally, this keeps him out of the limelight, but it's a mistake to assume that just because his name isn't regularly splashed across the tabloids that he's not keeping himself busy. In fact, he is working (2007) on his autobiography, his official web site, reading scripts, performing, writing music, and helping young performers reach the heights he has reached - and doing it all with characteristic charm, grace, vitality...and with his trademark banner, "Treasure beyond measure!" flying proudly overhead.
