GODZILLA

I got dragged to this by my same friend who dragged me to see Pacific Rim, so I wasn't very excited.

My excitement did increase a bit when I noticed Sally Hawkins and Aaron Taylor-Johnson were in it, though.

I loved it. The film is beautiful and they used Godzilla perfectly. I didn't HATE Pacific Rim but it felt like a video game to me. This movie is a true emotional experience.

There was some awkward dialogue (which rely I guess is unavoidable in a movie about giant monsters) but the acting was superb. Contrary to what the trailers show us, Taylor-Johnson is the lead, not Cranston. They both deliver though, and Cranston is used very wisely.

Godzilla looks great if not a little chubby. The CGI is flawless.

I'm not sure what prompted the makers of this to actually give a shit about making a good movie out of what probably should have been a dumb popcorn flick, but I'm thankful!

Still not gonna let my friend drag me to see Transformers, though.

by Anonymousreply 159April 25, 2021 3:01 AM

Interesting, OP. A friend is checking it out this weekend...I'll wait for his review before I hustle to the cinema.

Pac Rim is a hot mess. By that I mean, it's not my fave...too campy.

by Anonymousreply 1May 16, 2014 2:02 PM

Here's my hypothesis: people who like Godzilla are size queens.

care to confirm or deny?

by Anonymousreply 2May 16, 2014 2:08 PM

Gozirra!

by Anonymousreply 3May 16, 2014 5:44 PM

Yesterday's USA Today review said it was pretty good. Nothing like the 1998/Broderick cartoon version.

Said Godzilla overtook all the actors, so none of them really shined.

Here I am, cunts.

Never in the history of cinema have we seen a star as dominating as Godzilla. Bigger than John Wayne, he has rehabilitated himself from a heartless monster to an altruistic hero, reminiscent of Beowulf. Not unlike Theodore "Hickey" Hickman in THE ICEMAN COMETH, it takes a while for his presence be seen, but when he does finally appear, he treats everybody on the screen as if they were Kardashians, talentless beings who have the gall to think they deserve top billing. Go see it; what he does will have evangelical Christians up in arms. Fox News will condemn him and The Phelps clan will picket every theater in the US. But, he's back, bitches!

by Anonymousreply 6May 16, 2014 7:56 PM

And Aaron Taylor-Johnson is so nice to look at.

by Anonymousreply 7May 16, 2014 8:14 PM

Brrr, it's shilly in here!

by Anonymousreply 8May 16, 2014 8:18 PM

Yes, R8, anyone who likes something must be a shill.

The makers of Godzilla hired me years ago and I've been posting here ever since waiting for this day to arrive.

by Anonymousreply 9May 16, 2014 8:21 PM

R9, I thought R8 was Liza.

by Anonymousreply 10May 16, 2014 8:37 PM

I LOVED PACIFIC RIM! Hunnan and Elba? PLease girl, I am still salivating!

Oh and the movie was really cool!

by Anonymousreply 11May 17, 2014 2:54 AM

Saw it last night. It was dull. The actors were wasted. ATJ should have been shirtless.

by Anonymousreply 12May 17, 2014 2:56 AM

I just came home from seeing this godawful dreck. Fucking aweful!! I've lost those two hours forever. I am so pissed off that I wasted my money on this horseshit of a movie.

by Anonymousreply 13May 17, 2014 3:04 AM

Pacific rim so so racist. Godzilla would have been great if he has more than 15 minutes screen time. I almost fell asleep.

by Anonymousreply 14May 17, 2014 3:07 AM

Did anyone else find David Strathairn sexy in his camos?

by Anonymousreply 15May 17, 2014 3:16 AM

"Godzilla looks great if not a little chubby." Leave it to a Datalounger!

by Anonymousreply 16May 17, 2014 3:17 AM

I liked it. I wasn't expecting much but it was fun. The audience cheered in several places and my partner and I had a lot of fun.

by Anonymousreply 17May 17, 2014 3:18 AM

The human melodrama was beyond excruciating. I didn't give a shit about vapid Aaron Johnson or whimpering, saucer-eyed Elizabeth Olsen. Ken Watnabe was the mystical Asian - all portentous enunciations and warnings. Sally Hawkins just looked weird and tightly wound.

Really - the story involving all of the characters was awful. The kaiju fu was great however.

by Anonymousreply 18May 17, 2014 3:19 AM

Does Aaron Taylor-Johnson show his hole? Or even his massive muscled glutes?

by Anonymousreply 19May 17, 2014 6:08 AM

Horrible film and a tedious waste of a few hours. Sorry, but I have to say don't bother seeing this or at least wait for it on Netflix.

Crap. 1.5 stars.

by Anonymousreply 20May 17, 2014 8:41 AM
Godzilla looks great if not a little chubby.

Gee, thanks for pointing that out, BITCH.

I begged them to delay filming for a couple of months so I could spend a few weeks slimming down at a health spa, but they were locked into this frickin' May release date, and my agent couldn't get them to budge.

You can bet I'll look svelte by the Oscars, though.

by Anonymousreply 21May 17, 2014 9:43 AM

Godzilla was made for an American audience, so he has to be fat or Americans couldn't identify with him.

by Anonymousreply 22May 17, 2014 10:58 AM

The full reveal of Godzilla is visually stunning.

by Anonymousreply 23May 17, 2014 12:59 PM

The dumb people at Today just said Brian Cranston starred and wondered if this version was as good as original...

by Anonymousreply 24May 17, 2014 1:51 PM
Godzilla was made for an American audience

No it wasn't.

by Anonymousreply 25May 17, 2014 2:10 PM

Elizabeth Olsen is in it? Ugh pass.

by Anonymousreply 26May 17, 2014 3:42 PM

Godzilla has carb face.

by Anonymousreply 27May 17, 2014 4:02 PM

Hello, Mr. Godzilla? We're interested in discussing the possibility of you becoming our new spokesperson. Might you be interested?

by Anonymousreply 28May 17, 2014 5:17 PM

This version, R25, not the iconic original.

by Anonymousreply 29May 17, 2014 6:37 PM

I was disappointed. The characters had no life. I also thought the giant roaches weren't scary enough and looked to much like the cloverfield monster.

by Anonymousreply 30May 17, 2014 8:11 PM

Bryan Cranston must have been paid a lot. Seems like he is getting more uppity about his acting since BB.

by Anonymousreply 33May 17, 2014 8:48 PM

R30, they looked absolutely nothing like theCloverfield monster.

by Anonymousreply 34May 17, 2014 8:52 PM

Amazing film - a bunch of us went - totally blown away. IMAX 3-D. Don't miss it.

by Anonymousreply 35May 17, 2014 9:02 PM

Pacific Rim was crap. Godzilla is great fun.

by Anonymousreply 36May 17, 2014 9:03 PM

I have to admit I am flummoxed by all the raves this movie is getting. Sure, the action scenes are terrific -- I like that it avoids the chainsaw editing and excessive shaky-cam that has come to dominate action scenes -- but other than that? It's crap. Pure shit. Zero depth, bland acting (what a waste of a great cast), thoroughly lacking in emotional engagement. Unbelievably awful.

by Anonymousreply 37May 17, 2014 9:55 PM

Did they edit in scenes with Raymond Burr?

Dude, he's co-starring with Oscar winner Juliette Binoche, last year's Oscar nominee Sally Hawkins, "The Last Samurai" Oscar nominee Ken Watanabe, "Good Night, and Good Luck" Oscar nominee David Strathairn. It's not like he's slumming.

by Anonymousreply 39May 17, 2014 10:40 PM

Well I just saw it and thought it was cool. Fun, summer time, popcorn movie.

I have no idea who the soldier guy was.

He was bland and I still don't know who the hell he is. What has he been in before?

Godzilla was awesome. He saved us all. The special effects were cool. Mass destruction and chaos.

by Anonymousreply 40May 17, 2014 10:47 PM

R40, he's Kick-Ass. He was in Savages, Anna Karenina and he's going to be in the next Avengers. He's British and a real chameleon.

by Anonymousreply 44May 18, 2014 1:37 AM

by Anonymousreply 45May 18, 2014 4:19 AM

It has stomped at the box office. A monster hit

by Anonymousreply 46May 18, 2014 5:25 AM

I heard that Godzilla was a bossy bottom. King Kong is his top.

by Anonymousreply 47May 18, 2014 5:37 AM

What a piece of shit. Godzilla was a glorified extra. Halfway into I thought I was watching Cloverfield 2. The main guy is an awful actor. It makes Roland Emmerich's version Oscar worthy.
Godzilla was a glorified extra.

Godzilla has never been in a movie more than 15 minutes, even the original.

by Anonymousreply 52May 18, 2014 6:11 AM

All the millions spent on this movie and they couldn't get a better wig on Bryan Cranston?

by Anonymousreply 53May 18, 2014 7:37 AM

I looked at Godzilla (1998) numbers. They weren't as bad as I got the impression from the news at the time. The budget was $130 million. The US gross was $136 million and foreign gross was $243 million. If it was made today they would do a sequel. I prefer the 1998 Godzilla to the 2014 Godzilla. The one problem I did have with the 1998 Godzilla is the big lower jaw was too much.

by Anonymousreply 54May 18, 2014 8:07 AM

Godzilla 1998 was a giant iguana who actually hid from the humans. The real Godzilla would never hide. Plus, the "King of Monsters" was killed. Pathetic. The people who went to see it only went for the pleasure of seeing New York stomped. It showed disrespect to a screen legend.

by Anonymousreply 55May 18, 2014 10:15 AM

You people should read a book every now and then instead of wasting your time with this crap.

by Anonymousreply 56May 18, 2014 1:58 PM
The main guy is an awful actor.

Hell no! Aaron Taylor-Johnson is one of the few young Brit actors who is actually extremely talented. I think the character as written was bland, and supposed to be rather cold. He's a military man.

But Taylor-Johnson is nowhere near being an awful actor. In fact, he's one of the better ones working today.

by Anonymousreply 57May 18, 2014 2:59 PM

Wait, ATJ is British?! Well fuck me. I thought he was from LA or something. I guess anyone can speak our English language really good. Man, he had me fooled!

by Anonymousreply 58May 18, 2014 3:05 PM

R58, he does great with accents. His American accent in Savages, Kick-Ass and Godzilla are all different and tailored to the character.

Here is his British accent:

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 59May 18, 2014 3:08 PM

WOW, R59. He sounds incredibly sexy either way. I did see him in Savages, and he and Taylor Kitsch have a very palpable sexual chemistry together. They'd make a very beautiful couple.

If Godzilla had tanked, it might've been ATJ's John Carter. I'm still hoping Taylor Kitsch will headline some more movies. Both he and ATJ have the potential to be box-office A-listers. They should really have Tom Cruise's career.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 60May 18, 2014 3:26 PM

Both of them were killed by the critics as being bland in Savages. I did not see that but ATJ was bland as hell in in Anna Karinina. There was no way in hell I believed she would risk her marriage, family, friends, status and money for him. Especially with Jude Law playing the husband, even though they toned down how hard he was from the book or maybe Law was just more likable. He is a very lucky guy. Cute, but lucky.

by Anonymousreply 61May 18, 2014 3:35 PM

They needed to pare down the human drama by about 30 minutes- I was desperately fighting off sleep during the bridge sequence. Really, when Cranston was off screen, it was a snoozefest.

But I do appreciate the origin story of Gojiro and he looks fully rendered (he's supposed to be pear shaped) and amazing. When they did the full reveal, I did the mom thing (when you make the face you want your baby to mimic while eating) and made the roar face when he roared. And the battle of the kaiju at the end was satisfying.

But save it for a rainy afternoon napping movie.

by Anonymousreply 62May 18, 2014 4:34 PM

Andrew O'Hehir at salon.com called this Godzilla "the best action film since Jaws."

Seriously.

He said that.

SMH.

by Anonymousreply 63May 18, 2014 4:47 PM

I enjoyed the bridge sequence. I thought it was full of tension. I also loved the scene with Juliette Binoche trying to make it out with Heisenberg waiting to push the button. Good suspense, even without monsters.

by Anonymousreply 64May 18, 2014 4:48 PM

OMG. The bridge scene was when I wanted to throw things at the screen in disgust.

It's a bus full of children (where did the co-worker disappear to?) supposedly fleeing San Francisco, so why is it heading INTO San Francisco (it's heading south on the Golden Gate Bridge)? Why are these kids PLAYING when they're on a bridge surrounded by soldiers and tanks and a giant monster in the water next to them? When the bus tries to flee, one of the cable struts falls in front of the bus, stopping it, but 30 seconds later, it's gone...? And, thinking logically, there shouldn't have been such a scene at all -- the Navy knew Godzilla was swimming towards San Francisco, so they knew he'd pass by, under or through the Golden Gate Bridge -- and they had enough time to stop people from getting on the bridge -- it made no fucking sense whatsoever.

One of the most patently awful films I've ever seen.

by Anonymousreply 65May 18, 2014 4:55 PM

I was actually talking about the other bridge scene, where they're on the train and they have to walk on to the bridge with their flashlights.

by Anonymousreply 66May 18, 2014 4:57 PM

R65, have you never been in an evacuation type situation. That's exactly how disorganized and chaotic things are.

by Anonymousreply 67May 18, 2014 4:58 PM

I found the movie to be empty and humorless. It's the last time I'll consider DL advice about movies.

by Anonymousreply 68May 18, 2014 4:59 PM
ATJ was bland as hell in in Anna Karinina. There was no way in hell I believed she would risk her marriage, family, friends, status and money for him.

Ack!!! I totally disagree. I thought his Vronsky was his best work yet. He was sexy as hell. I would have stepped over my own mother to have him.

I haven't seen Godzilla yet, but if he's bland in it, I doubt it's entirely his fault. He can be amazingly good when he's got something to work with.

by Anonymousreply 69May 18, 2014 5:00 PM

Oh, yes, r66, when they're transporting a nuclear weapon by train, the train goes off the rails and they decide to transport the bomb by helicopter the rest of the way...and why didn't they do that in the first place???

by Anonymousreply 70May 18, 2014 5:01 PM

As a matter of fact, I have, r67. It was chaotic, but not the clusterfuck portrayed unrealistically in the film.

by Anonymousreply 71May 18, 2014 5:02 PM

R70, I think it was because the helicopters were seen as more of a risk because the monsters had the ability to shut down all power.

by Anonymousreply 72May 18, 2014 5:06 PM

Pacific Rim. I can imagine a few of you gays were disappointed when you saw that.

by Anonymousreply 73May 18, 2014 5:09 PM

it makes me smile when people get their undies in a bunch because the bridge scene wasn't realistic and yet the entire premise of the movie is completely unrealistic.

Just go have a good time at the movies. Eat some popcorn and go with the the escape from reality that this is meant to be.

It was a fun movie. Everyone in my crowded theater had fun. Was it perfect? No, but it was a pretty good Godzilla movie. I wasn't exactly expecting Oscar caliber cinema. I was expecting a nice 2 hour diversion, and some time to admire the very cute ATJ. I would agree, sadly, that I don't think this kind of film is really his strong suit. He is a talented actor, but I think he is better if he is allowed to be somewhat eccentric, etc. The Strong Silent type is a waste of his talent, and there are many other actors who do that kind of role just as well.

by Anonymousreply 74May 18, 2014 5:12 PM

R74 is why people accept shitty blockbuster movies.

by Anonymousreply 75May 18, 2014 5:15 PM

I'm sorry, but no. A GREAT film would've balanced the unrealistic -- the Godzilla monster -- with realistic events and characters of depth in order to enhance the tension and thrills. The original 1954 Japanese film was able to do that, and with the added textual content of Japan's intimate history with the atom and hydrogen bombs.

I find it offensive that I'm told to "dumb myself" down for a work of art.

by Anonymousreply 76May 18, 2014 5:17 PM

No, R75, they just don't look for reasons to hate things. It's an entertaining movie, with some gorgeous cinematography.

Half the people who shit on television shows and movies on here haven't even seen them. They're just trained to think being nasty and hateful makes them "elite" and/or "funny".

It just makes them look joyless and bitter.

by Anonymousreply 77May 18, 2014 5:18 PM

r77, based on the comments in this thread, the people shitting on this film HAVE seen it, so their complaints about it are justified.

by Anonymousreply 78May 18, 2014 5:26 PM

R78 - lighten up. It's just a film - if you aren't into it don't go.

by Anonymousreply 79May 18, 2014 5:30 PM

Not sure I ever said it was a great film, but it was definitely a good film for it's genre. People who want to take a dump on the movie think they are sound really intellectual when instead they sound like a film school reject.

Sometimes a great big action monster movie, is just that; a great big action movie. It is meant to entertain. If you want to bitch that it wasn't entertaining enough for you that is fine, but to bemoan the lack of accuracy of a particular scene, in a movie about MUTO's and Godzilla makes you seem idiotic.

I had fun, It had some intense moments, and I enjoyed the movie. The CGI was good, and the acting was about on par with most of these types of movies. ATJ is hot, but he could have easily been replaced by any generic action oriented actor. I would rather see ATJ in smaller films that showcase his talent.

by Anonymousreply 80May 18, 2014 5:33 PM

No, r79. I AM into it. That's the point. I WANT it to be a great film. I LOVE movies, I go 2, 3 times a week. To see a shitty film like this get praised pisses me off, and to see it excused in such a manner is offensive. It's possible to make smart, sophisticated popcorn films -- it's been done in the past and hopefully will be done in the future; to accept this shit as quality filmmaking is incredibly appalling to me.

by Anonymousreply 81May 18, 2014 5:35 PM

Offensive? This is what you call offensive?

Perhaps you should live in the real world and not in the theater so much.

A difference of opinion over a movie that you were not forced to see, is hardly offensive. You sound like an idiot to take this that seriously. Perhaps the high horse you are sitting on is rammed a bit to far up your ass

by Anonymousreply 82May 18, 2014 5:45 PM

r82, that YOU think this acceptable is what is offensive.

by Anonymousreply 83May 18, 2014 5:50 PM
R74 is why people accept shitty blockbuster movies

R75 Isn't there a screening somewhere of "The Sorrow And The Pity" you should be at?
I find it offensive that I'm told to "dumb myself" down for a work of art.

Oh R76, see it again, but next time try not to sit there with your head up your ass.

by Anonymousreply 84May 18, 2014 6:00 PM

[R82], that YOU think this acceptable is what is offensive.

This is my point. Why you would care what I think about a popcorn movie, much less be offended by it is pretty ridiculous. You need some real life indignations for your offense. Perhaps you could take a look at racism, or the abducted Nigerian girls, or Hate Crimes. Your poor offended state of mind might actually be justified with those issues.

But instead, you chose to be offended about this movie, a movie you were not forced to see, most likely because your film school audition tape reel was roundly criticized.

by Anonymousreply 85May 18, 2014 6:51 PM

I don't care about Gozilla at all, but I'm probably forced to see it with my friend next weekend! LOL. He's been talking about the movie for weeks.

by Anonymousreply 86May 18, 2014 6:55 PM

go in with a good attitude to just have fun with it. It really isn't a bad way to spend 2 hours at the movies

by Anonymousreply 87May 18, 2014 6:56 PM

R59. thanks for that clip... I just added that movie to my Netflix queue. Id' never heard of it before.

by Anonymousreply 88May 18, 2014 9:55 PM

It was lots of fun, I might even see it again. I lived in SF for 14 years and one friend who came with me lives there now, so it was fun to see the big lizard and the flying spiders battle it out on Grant and Montgomery Streets. Wow, he just knocked down the Hyatt Union Square! There goes 3 Embarcadero!! I have to say I thought the bridge scene was the best one of those ever done. Awesome.

by Anonymousreply 90May 18, 2014 9:59 PM

I like how it undermined some of the tropes it actually looked like it was going to exploit. Like the kids on the bridge thing. You expected this dramatic danger spiral where the kid is dramatically saved somehow. But no, they bus just drives off and the movie goes on.

They make you believe one character is going to be the lead, and then nope, they just kill him off early in the movie.

They do this big huge build up of how the main character is a bomb defusing expert, so you expect this big dramatic countdown to him defusing the bomb with only seconds to spare. But nope, he fails and the bomb goes off.

Even the destruction of Las Vegas... you mostly see the aftermath, with the monster waddling away in the distance. That was awesome.

For a movie so full of tropes, it was very cool to see so many of them just undermined... confounding expectations.

by Anonymousreply 91May 18, 2014 10:13 PM

They also made it quite dull, r91.

by Anonymousreply 92May 18, 2014 10:50 PM

Dull? You have got to be kidding. That was a joke, right?

by Anonymousreply 93May 18, 2014 11:24 PM

We want "God" taken out of "Godzilla." He saved the fags of San Francisco, just as we started to heartily cheer the killing of the sodomites, who defy the edicts of the real God. We pray that this offense against the Holy Will bomb and that everyone boycott. Go see a wholesome Christian based film and you will be rewarded in heaven.

by Anonymousreply 94May 18, 2014 11:30 PM

It was fantastic.

I got a kick out of the rip-off from "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" when Cranston's character is being held by the MONARCH interrogators.

It was just like the scene in CEOTTK where Richard Dreyfus character is being questioned by Lacombe.

Screw the negative nellies, I really enjoyed it!

I saw every Godzilla movie ever made when I was a kid, and I thought they did a fine job. Sure, I didn't care about the humans much, but that's true of every Toho Studios movie; the real fun is watching monsters fight and smash things, and this movie had some suspenseful and original monster fights. Loved how they shot so much from the POV of the humans, it gave the situations immediacy.

The worst thing about the film was Elizabeth Olson's nose job. Seriously, she paid money for THAT?

Ultra-lightweights like Taylor-Johnson and Knightley do not belong in a movie like "Anna Karenina." Find some real actors already.

by Anonymousreply 101May 19, 2014 1:43 PM

Anna Karenina just screams for Julia Roberts and Keanu Reeves.

by Anonymousreply 102May 19, 2014 8:14 PM

What role did David Strathairn play? Is he in it much?

by Anonymousreply 103May 19, 2014 8:22 PM

Not really. He's someone who is high ranking military. One minute he doesn't seem to care many will die another minute he is concerned about a school bus on a bridge.

by Anonymousreply 104May 19, 2014 8:31 PM

Wonder if Cranston signed a three picture deal?

by Anonymousreply 105May 19, 2014 9:46 PM

Doesn't seem like he did.

by Anonymousreply 106May 19, 2014 9:57 PM

I saw it and was kind of disappointed. The lead actor wasn't particularly memorable in his role. I disliked the "perfect" happy ending and couldn't help but think that for such a violent movie hardly anyone was seriously hurt or killed. The lead's son was really annoying, too.

If you're griping about the poor acting and weakly written characters, then you do not understand Godzilla movies.

The humans aren't the stars, Godzilla is the star! The humans are only there to deliver exposition and goggle at the awesome monsters!

In this respect, the new film does follow the classic Toho Studios formula. I respect that.

by Anonymousreply 110May 20, 2014 5:35 AM

Of course, a sequel is imminent.

by Anonymousreply 111May 20, 2014 5:37 AM

R111, I think that it would be another blockbuster if it featured Godzilla seeking out Roland Emmerich and destroying him with his atomic breath before crushing him.

by Anonymousreply 112May 20, 2014 9:56 AM
Wonder if Cranston signed a three picture deal?"

He's killed off.

by Anonymousreply 113May 20, 2014 11:52 PM

r110 has baby taste.

by Anonymousreply 114May 21, 2014 8:13 PM

There's no excuse for poorly written characters, especially with a movie this ambitious. I mean, if the director simply had fun with being schlocky then maybe we could've just concentrated on the monster action. But clearly there were weightier themes on his mind. And it all just came off as leaden and hammy.

by Anonymousreply 115May 21, 2014 8:23 PM

R115 Speilberg does that and I hate it - the family stories in War of the Worlds were the hammiest ever. Spare me! The Walking Dead is worse. Enough with the ham and more action I say. Let's not forget Independence Day, 2012 and The Day After Tomorrow - all packed with stupid characters and sentimental plot lines. Godzilla was much better than any of them. remember Godzilla from 2000 with Matthew Broderick. OMG 16X fast forward is an angel sent from Heaven I you watch those films.

So dump on Godzilla if you want but it is better than any of the films I just mentioned.

Maybe Prometheus was good, but everybody hated it. I ghink I am the only fan the movie had.

by Anonymousreply 116May 21, 2014 8:56 PM

I liked Prometheus.

by Anonymousreply 117May 21, 2014 9:17 PM

Did Avatar have stupid stories? I don't remember. 2012 and War of the Worlds have the same hammy story about divorced dads and their kids. 2012 is Emmerich and WotW is Spielberg and both of them dished out the same crap. Prometheus had a sexy daughter who hated her dad, but it wasn't hammy and stupid.

by Anonymousreply 118May 21, 2014 9:57 PM

Everything about Prometheus was stupid...

by Anonymousreply 119May 21, 2014 10:40 PM
He's killed off.

As if Godzilla hasn't been killed off and comeback a hundred and fifty fucking times.

by Anonymousreply 120May 22, 2014 1:13 PM

R120, but he wasn't playing Godzilla.

by Anonymousreply 121May 22, 2014 1:15 PM

If you liked Prometheus, then your opinions on all movies, plots, etc., are null and void, because you have [italic]terrible[/italic] taste.

by Anonymousreply 122May 22, 2014 1:21 PM

The masses that saw this movie do not care about the human characters.

by Anonymousreply 123May 22, 2014 1:23 PM

Did anyone notice that Godzilla's final move involved felching?

by Anonymousreply 124May 22, 2014 1:28 PM

It wasn't felching, it was sno-balling.

by Anonymousreply 125May 22, 2014 1:50 PM

Wait, did the MUTO excrete something for Godzilla to felch/sno ball?

by Anonymousreply 126May 22, 2014 2:27 PM

He just forced that MUTO to swallow his load is all.

by Anonymousreply 127May 22, 2014 3:29 PM

X-rated comments on a Godzilla thread? Grow up.

by Anonymousreply 128May 22, 2014 4:00 PM

Choke on a bag of Godzilla dicks, R128.

by Anonymousreply 129May 22, 2014 4:02 PM

I loved this film. The monster was perfect. Now I want a pet Godzilla.

by Anonymousreply 130May 22, 2014 4:07 PM

You gays wouldn't go see "12 Years a Slave" yet you go see this "Godzilla" junk? Unbelievable.

by Anonymousreply 131May 22, 2014 4:30 PM

We already saw Roots,R 131.

by Anonymousreply 132May 22, 2014 8:00 PM

I was really looking forward to seeing this.

My local movie theater has a five dollar day, so maybe I'll catch it on that day.

by Anonymousreply 133May 22, 2014 8:11 PM

Me too, R133. I was planning on seeing this tomorrow at the matinee but this thread has changed my mind.

by Anonymousreply 134May 22, 2014 8:16 PM

Godzilla... my favorite Blue Oyster Cult song EVER!

by Anonymousreply 135May 22, 2014 8:16 PM

Wow there are soem trolls up in here.

I have to say the reveal shot on David Strathairn was quite amusing — as if he were the BIG STAR that would sell this film.

I really wonder if his agent demanded the director treat his presence like a big deal.

by Anonymousreply 136May 22, 2014 8:17 PM

Well why didn't you say all it took to get you to the theater was a little sno-balling and felching?!

by Anonymousreply 137May 22, 2014 8:17 PM

Are Godzilla and Spiderman made by competing studios?

I really think people are trolling the comments to discourage anyone from seeing this. It's a bizarre level of trolling going on not just here but on IMDB and other sites.

by Anonymousreply 138May 22, 2014 8:19 PM

I really think people are trolling the comments to discourage anyone from seeing this"

Don't be silly. There are people here who are dedicated to spending all their free time disparaging anything fun, definitely including summer movies.

by Anonymousreply 139May 22, 2014 9:42 PM

Moral of the movie: Don't leave the Castro, and *never* go downtown.

It was okay. Better than Spiderman, not as good as Captain America. The buggy-monsters looked fake in a way that Godzilla didn't. And what's with the hero? "Honey, there are three big-ass monsters coming to exactly where you are, and we're gonna drop a nuclear bomb on them. Stay put until I get there!"

Oh, and I kept seeing Olsen's sisters every time I looked at her.

by Anonymousreply 140May 22, 2014 9:52 PM

R140, the plan was to diffuse the nuke.

by Anonymousreply 141May 22, 2014 9:56 PM

" "Honey, there are three big-ass monsters coming to exactly where you are, and we're gonna drop a nuclear bomb on them. Stay put until I get there!""

Yeah, that was a forehead-slappingly stupid moment. He should have told his wife to grab the kid and get the hell out of SF as soon as she could. That character was an idiot, and a control freak.

But then, the humans in Godzilla films always act like idiots.

by Anonymousreply 142May 22, 2014 11:14 PM

What is a MUTO? Aaron T-J has NO charisma whatsoever. How did he get this role anyway?

by Anonymousreply 143May 27, 2014 1:45 PM

My friend and I were bored, had some passes, and went to see this.

I thought it sucked. I couldn't wait for it to be over.

by Anonymousreply 144May 27, 2014 3:56 PM

OP is the "my friends have to DRAG ME" troll.

You know, OP is just so above it all and is always having to be "dragged" everywhere because she's just so damn popular and shit.

OP, are you also 45 and your friends insist you look 21?

by Anonymousreply 145May 27, 2014 4:44 PM

Massive Unidentified....

Something.

I want to say Terrestrial Organisms??

Don't remember.... And I've seen it twice!

:)

by Anonymousreply 146May 27, 2014 9:53 PM

Is this movie worth seeing in 3D just for Aaron? He is without doubt the hottest actor in HW right now.

Although I liked him better when he was more twinky, I wonder if he bulked up for roles. He was very hot in Anna Karenina too, with the mustache and all.

by Anonymousreply 147May 30, 2014 8:13 PM

Many opinions agree the best way to see movie is Imax 3D...

by Anonymousreply 148May 31, 2014 9:40 AM

bump for more DL reviews

by Anonymousreply 149June 8, 2014 1:13 PM

I would give it 3 stars out of 4. It needed way more Bryan Cranston and more background story. No background story at all is provided. I felt like most of the movie is people looking up at monster, screaming and running in fear. And that one Asian actor who played the scientist had the same expression in every scene. But the visual effects were amazing.

by Anonymousreply 150June 8, 2014 1:32 PM

It's Godzilla ! If you need a background story, go see Anna Karenina. Anyone who doesn't know the story of Godzilla is not in the target demographic, so time need not be wasted on rehashing.

by Anonymousreply 151June 8, 2014 4:45 PM

I agree, it would have been better if Godzilla - feeling intense grief and regret over the murders he had committed - had committed suicide at the end.

by Anonymousreply 152June 8, 2014 4:58 PM

I went to see this a few days ago and I really liked it.

The action is great, and the acting is ok to good.

Unfortunately, Brian Cranston was acting in an entirely different movie.

by Anonymousreply 153June 8, 2014 10:10 PM

I wanna stick my tongue in Aaron Taylor-Johnson's booty hole.

by Anonymousreply 154June 8, 2014 10:19 PM

Not nearly as bad as the 1990s Godzilla, but not very good, either. Cranston looked like he'd been studying with Meryl Streep - all ham, no substance.

Has made $500 million globablly

by Anonymousreply 157July 28, 2014 10:27 PM

It finally has made over $200 domestic.

by Anonymousreply 158September 2, 2014 2:23 PM

$200 m. domestic is not very good.
