What is your favorite Madonna album?

Studio albums only. I'm leaving out American Life and MDNA, since the poll will only allow 10 options.

Vote and discuss!

by Anonymousreply 85July 5, 2021 12:04 AM

None, I have a compilation, there is always so much dead wood in any single album

by Anonymousreply 1April 21, 2014 8:10 PM

True Blue, arguably her best Pop album.

by Anonymousreply 2April 21, 2014 8:11 PM

Her debut album, Like a Prayer, and Ray of Light are my favorites. Confessions is very good also, and I was surprised by how much I liked Hard Candy.

by Anonymousreply 3April 21, 2014 8:11 PM

Why are you old queens so obsessed with Madonna's music? It's not even that good, even at her best. You old queens are out of your minds.

by Anonymousreply 4April 21, 2014 8:15 PM

I'll put some madonna music on, any of her albums, before I listen to any of these tiresome twats that are played on the radio today. The music today sucks, I can't imagine being in a club dancing to any of it. I'm glad we had madonna and the others of our time. When madonna came out with new music it was AN EVENT. EXCITING. I can't listen to the current garbage that they play over and over, none of it is good. Gaga was good at the beginning, quickly got caught up in her own hype ( and supposedly became a drug addict) and is now done, her latest music is complete crap. Poor kids today don't recognize the living legend that Madonna is, they're easily brainwashed into believing someone or something is better, even though it's crap unwrapped and recited by the current one hit wonder, putting no thought, no energy, no creativity into it themselves. They are merely a puppet, propped up by their record company to attempt to cash in before the young audience grows up a bit and possibly acquires some form of taste. Like her or hate her, I don't see any of these girls having anything near the career that Madonna has had. And continues to have.

by Anonymousreply 5April 21, 2014 8:34 PM

NO love for "Erotica"?! It's my second favorite after "Like a Prayer".

by Anonymousreply 6April 21, 2014 8:38 PM

I'd say Like A Prayer, but the original album versions of the songs suck. They were saved by Shep Pettibone's house remixes. I wonder if she considered having Pettibone produce the album, or if the stiff original versions intentionally catered to the anti-disco/gay mainstream. None of the rave reviews for it commented on how much better the remixes were, in keeping with the mainstream's view of dance music as an inferior form.

by Anonymousreply 7April 21, 2014 8:38 PM

Shoo Bee Doo Bee Doo Ooo La La.

The reason I did not choose "Like a Virgin."

by Anonymousreply 8April 21, 2014 8:40 PM

Erotica is her only good one.

by Anonymousreply 9April 21, 2014 8:41 PM

I voted for Erotica. I like how American Life isn't even a choice.

by Anonymousreply 10April 21, 2014 8:41 PM

Madonna is so very untalented. Shocking that she has lasted so long. I guess Justin Timberlake is following her lead. She can't conduct an interview with the grace God gave a pig. Her movies suck- except for Evita and her music- well let's just say that in the record bin of life she should be at the very bottom. Everything is about sex and daddy issues with her. I am surprised she is still thought about. She can't really sing or dance. Watch her live before an audience of her real peers- other singers, etc. She is nervous, shy, and shutters a little bit. Like my pussywhipped uncle when my aunt calls his name. Favorite album- how about the album that will last as long as a Beatles' recording or Dylan or even Michael Jackson. Gay people should pick better role models.

by Anonymousreply 11April 21, 2014 8:43 PM

I agree with R8 about the Shep Pettibone remixes of the Like a Prayer songs. I always listen to the versions of those songs from The Immaculate Collection.

by Anonymousreply 12April 21, 2014 8:45 PM

[quote]I like how American Life isn't even a choice.

Well, the poll only allows 10 options, and I've never met anyone who liked American Life, so leaving it out was an easy choice.

by Anonymousreply 13April 21, 2014 8:47 PM

R12= Joni Mitchell

by Anonymousreply 14April 21, 2014 8:52 PM

1) Like A Prayer

2) Ray of Light

3) Erotica

by Anonymousreply 15April 21, 2014 8:52 PM

Like A Prayer has aged the best. Ray of Light has "Frozen", "Nothing Really Matters", and "Power of Goodbye", but the rest is silly self help book spirituality set to horribly aged plinky plonky crypto-trance (the title track is particularly dire in that regard.) "Frozen", however, is one of the best songs she has ever done and towers over the rest of that patchy record.

Like A Prayer gives you a snapshot of her "imperial phase", when she was truly on top of her game and, arguably, the biggest pop star on the planet. Those Shep Pettibone remixes were extremely enjoyable, even though everything about them screams 1989-1990.

by Anonymousreply 16April 21, 2014 8:56 PM

Ray of Light & Like A Prayer are givens...but I'm partial to Erotica and Bedtime Stories.

I played Erotica to death when I was in high school and bedtime came out my first year in college. I listened to it many times flying back and forth between the coasts.

by Anonymousreply 17April 21, 2014 9:02 PM

To the douche at R17: Whoever said she was a role model?

Just asking what album you like best.

If you are not a fan skip the thread or dry up & float away.

by Anonymousreply 18April 21, 2014 9:03 PM

Erotica. Hands down. Saw her two nights in a row at MSG on the Erotica tour. Saw her since, and not as pure fun.

by Anonymousreply 19April 21, 2014 9:05 PM

R14 - I wasn't being sarcastic - I do like that it isn't a choice. It's wretched.

by Anonymousreply 20April 21, 2014 9:12 PM

Erotica is indeed very good, probably my 2nd favorite, after Like A Prayer, with some of her best singles (Deeper And Deeper, Rain) with Confessions On A Dancefloor, being the 3rd one in that ranking. It's a surprisingly cohesive, well-produced dance album, given what immediately preceded and followed it in her discography.

by Anonymousreply 21April 21, 2014 9:12 PM

I love American Life. It's my favourite.

Since it's not an option, I voted for Like a Prayer.

That's not the album version, R25. The youtube guy is an idiot. The album version is pretty much the one you hear on the radio

by Anonymousreply 26April 21, 2014 10:20 PM

american life is her best work. simple songs she wrote on guitar.

I was more of a Janet Jackson fan than Madonna, but Confessions On A Dance Floor really clicked with me. In particular, Jump was my favorite song to play on a playlist of songs to help push me into making a decision regarding moving to Europe. I made that move a few years ago and haven't looked back...

by Anonymousreply 30April 21, 2014 10:35 PM

None as she's a fraud. The bitch can't sing, is a mediocre dancer, can't write and steals other people's lyrics and visual concepts. TRASH.

Gays who like her are an embarrassment.

Vadge is a hypocrite who doesn't give a fuck about any of you, her fans.

by Anonymousreply 33April 21, 2014 10:39 PM

Is the Ralph Rosario remix the one that sounds like a Space Age Spaghetti Western theme tune?

by Anonymousreply 38April 21, 2014 11:06 PM

The Rosario mix is pretty dated and 90s sounding. The Passengerz mix probably would have been the best choice. I love the Blow Up Mix most, though I don't think it would have been a hit.

by Anonymousreply 39April 22, 2014 12:23 AM

I love this. It's especially powerful for the time period in which it came out (Bush's Iraq War). She was one of the first to speak out against the war, at a time when it was considered almost treasonous and siding with the devil to do so.

So far, Ray of Light is #1 and Like a prayer is a strong #2, which doesn't surprise me. I am surprised at the love for True Blue and especially Erotica, as that seemed to be the point where people started to tire of her at the time.

Listening to it again, it really is a fairly strong album. I remember loving the hell out of Bedtime Stories when it came out, but Ray of Light really blew it out of the water.

by Anonymousreply 41April 22, 2014 1:01 AM

Aside from the singles, Bedtime Stories drowns in that saccharine R&B sound (arguably Take a Bow does as well)

by Anonymousreply 42April 22, 2014 1:14 AM

"Something to Remember" - for two reasons, only:

The Versace cocktail dress she wears on the cover and, most of all, "MASSIVE ATTACK"!

by Anonymousreply 43April 22, 2014 1:20 AM

FAVES Madonna Like a Prayer Ray of Light

Least fave, True Blue American Life Hard Candy

by Anonymousreply 44April 22, 2014 1:39 AM

They all suck

by Anonymousreply 45April 22, 2014 1:40 AM

I'm going to skip the poll and actually show some love for American Life. I think it's her most personal album and I've loved it from the first time I played it.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 46April 22, 2014 1:41 AM

I still think her first album is the best. The most played Madonna singles on my iPod all come from that album. And even at 30 years old, some of the songs--Lucky Star, Burning Up, Physical Attraction, and Everybody--still sound fresh today despite being very obviously 80's cuts. I can't say the same for her other albums ESPECIALLY Like a Prayer. The only song I can still listen to from LaP is Express Yourself and only the music video version. From True Blue, I only listen to Open Your Heart and Where's the Party.

I'm also surprised at how many people still like Erotica. The only songs I can listen to from that album are Secret Garden and Deeper and Deeper. Everything else sounds dated beyond belief.

by Anonymousreply 47April 22, 2014 1:46 AM

I agree with R24 re: her first album.

by Anonymousreply 48April 22, 2014 1:48 AM

None. best Madonna album is complete silence. She has no talent.

by Anonymousreply 49April 22, 2014 1:50 AM

re: r42s link, her lyrics are so painfully cliche and juvenile. Just horrible.

by Anonymousreply 50April 22, 2014 6:34 AM

What are you, r42? Some kind of fucking taste dictator? I happen to particularly like that lyric and do not give a shit about your opinion. In fact, I doubt it's your honest opinion and instead it's some kind of contrived position you believe you have to take on Madonna because that's what is apparently hip these days.

But, even if it is your sincere belief, it really doesn't matter at all to anyone other than your own little self.

Here's a clue: if you don't like Madonna don't click on threads discussing people's favourite albums by her. Your sensitive little soul will be offended.

Better still, don't listen to any pop music at all, because if you find the lyric to American Life so "juvenile" and "clichéd" (really? where else do you hear that kind of thing?) then you will be outraged by 99% of what is out there.

The truth is, you're the cliché.

by Anonymousreply 51April 22, 2014 7:00 AM

Why Vadge still has so many fans is beyond comprehension. She has no talent, no originality,no consistent message/belief system, an unlikable personality and she's not even pretty.

by Anonymousreply 52April 22, 2014 8:27 AM

Am I the only one hated RAY OF LIGHT?

I really like most of the songs on Ray of Light but my favorite is Confessions on a Dance Floor.

I've never been a huge Madonna fan but I've always liked some of her songs. Actually Live to Tell was the first ever maxi single I bought from any artist. Ray of Light and Confessions are also the only albums I've ever bought from her.

by Anonymousreply 55April 22, 2014 8:57 AM

I really only like her first album with the classic songs like "Holiday," "Everybody," "Physical Attraction," etc.

I guess I'm showing my age.

by Anonymousreply 56April 22, 2014 9:13 AM

She's releasing a new album soon, apparently. What do we think of her post-Ray of Light output? I adore Confessions and Hard Candy. MDNA isn't her best, but it's not terrible.

by Anonymousreply 57April 22, 2014 7:52 PM

R8 isn't kidding about Like a Prayer. The album version of "Express Yourself" is especially god awful.

by Anonymousreply 59April 22, 2014 7:57 PM

It's easy to see why the first album seems to be the front runner. Apart from sounding both of its time and yet not dated, it also only has 8 (?) tracks, 6 of which were singles.

by Anonymousreply 60April 22, 2014 8:26 PM

[quote]I adore Confessions and Hard Candy. MDNA isn't her best, but it's not terrible.

They have a few good singles, but overall they are not as consistent as her past albums.

The tracks on Hard Candy that I like are: Heartbeat, Incredible and Devil. On MDNA: I'm Addicted, I'm A Sinner, Beautiful Killer and Best Friend. And those last two didn't even make but as add-ons to a 2nd disc.

by Anonymousreply 61April 22, 2014 8:48 PM

I was surprised at how much I liked Hard Candy. Candy Shop, 4 Minutes, Heartbeat, Miles Away, Beat Goes On, and Devil Wouldn't Recognize You are all catchy as hell.

by Anonymousreply 62April 22, 2014 8:57 PM

Even the good stuff on MDNA (e.g. Love Spent) is marred by wretched vocals. It amazes me that with all the work she puts into her body, she hasn't applied that to learning how to sing. She's not tone deaf, but as her live DVDs show, she has no technique - she probably blows her voice out by the second show. The cumulative effect of her last decade of touring is that she's been left with a poor voice when even in the studio.

by Anonymousreply 63April 22, 2014 9:07 PM

When I want to listen to Madonna, I reach for Like a Prayer. The entire album is strong. I like the variety of sounds/styles, too.

I loved Ray of Light for a few months when it came out but I tired of it. I don't own it anymore.

I still like Bedtime Stories though I think of it as pleasant background music.

I only know the singles from Erotica--are the album tracks good? I'll have to check them out since they're so popular here.

by Anonymousreply 64April 22, 2014 9:09 PM

[quote]She's releasing a new album soon, apparently. What do we think of her post-Ray of Light output?

One of the reasons I hated Ray of Light is because after that album, she has refused to let go of the electronica shit. Even her next album is supposed to be more electronica/EDM shit. That type of music is so forgettable and generic.

She should BEG Stephen Bray or Patrick Leonard to work with her again. They gave her her best hits.

I love the concert version of Confessions. Great remixes.

by Anonymousreply 67April 23, 2014 12:57 AM

I'm with you R55.

True Blue is my favorite - like every single song on that album. The only other album that I can say that about is Annie Lennox's Diva.

Didn't care for Erotica or Bedtime Stories when they came out but grew to like them a lot as an adult. If she didn't put out that stupid book and make that shitty movie around the same time, Erotica would've done better. They also should've released "Thief of Hearts" instead of "Bad Girl" as a single.

by Anonymousreply 68April 23, 2014 1:30 AM

Mine would be "Something to Remember."

by Anonymousreply 69April 23, 2014 1:43 AM

by Anonymousreply 74April 23, 2014 2:29 PM

none of the above. I don't listen to horrid talent free cunts.

by Anonymousreply 75April 23, 2014 2:34 PM

I'd rank her albums this way:

1) (Best) Like a Prayer;

2) Ray of Light;

3) Madonna;

4) Confessions on a Dance Floor;

5) Music

None of her albums are uniformly bad, and each has some great songs. Her library of memorable tunes is staggering. I'm a high school teacher and it's pretty amazing how familiar today's kids are with her songs, even those songs from ten and fifteen years before they were born.

Like her; love her; hate her; ignore her, Madge has had an unparalleled career and is on a very, very short list of most influential and successful pop acts ever.

by Anonymousreply 76April 23, 2014 2:40 PM

The gal truly has had an outstanding musical career, hasn't she? Thirty years in the bizz and she's still filling the largest arenas in the world.

Neither Elton John nor Streisand can do that anymore. Certainly not Gaga or these other dismissable pan flashes.

by Anonymousreply 78April 23, 2014 2:52 PM

What's sad is that she shows her desperation by glomming onto who's hot at the time. It was never a good look anytime she did it, but this pandering to the likes of Miley Cyrus has truly shown just how desperate for fame she really is (coupled with those embarrassing Instagrams of late). She should take a page from some of her contemporaries from back in the day and just be satisfied with her icon status. The more she dresses like a 25 year old and hangs out with the young'uns, the more pathetic it all seems. She'll never be as currently relevant as the new crop of pop stars, which is something she obviously just doesn't get.

by Anonymousreply 79April 23, 2014 5:27 PM

And the new crop of pop stars will never be a relevant as Madonna has been in her career, and are unlikely to come close to most of her records, including her tour grossing tour that she had at age 54, R81.
