"The upcoming WGN America series, the network's first foray into scripted original programming, takes a fresh — and much darker -- look at the 1692 Salem Witch Trials. Its witches are very real and actually manipulating the town into a state of fear. Shane West stars as war hero John Alden (historically, a survivor of the trials) who has returned home to find that his former love Mary (Janet Montgomery) has gone on to marry elderly town leader George Sibley (Michael Mulheren). What John doesn't know is that he got Mary pregnant and in order for her to get rid of the baby, she essentially made a deal with the devil-like witch Tituba (Ashley Madekwe)."
Just downloaded and watched the first episode. It was pretty fun, and not too soapy or teeny like a WB series. I read the candlelit sets are very accurate.

Sooooo... blame the victims?

It's a horror series, not a historical series. No one in their right mind is going to think this is an actual explanation for the witch trials, sheesh.

This show is bullshit.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | April 21, 2014 7:55 AM |
Why, because it combines a real event with supernatural fiction? The hostile reaction to that is surprising, and incredibly inane. This is just a horror/fantasy show aimed at the American Horror Story, Supernatural and Vampire Diaries crowd. There's no Republican conspiracy here, I assure you.

I can see why people would be upset by this; innocent women were killed based on hysteria and religious zealotry and here we have a show which basically says, yeah, they're really witches thereby justifying the appalling injustices metered out to the victims.

No, the reaction is totally inane. This is obviously just a fantasy series, light entertainment not to be taken as historical fact. And they do show innocent victims of the trails in the first episode. Might want to actually view something before judging it.
Hopefully some more sensible people, who've actually seen the show, will join the thread later today.

R7 is such an obvious TV shill that it's downright insulting.
R6 is correct.

R8's mother was an accused witch, burnt at the stake.

I watched it mostly but ended up fast forwarding parts of it, so I might've missed something. From what I saw I agree with R6. I got a bit of a feeling that the producers/network are trying to please religous audience by showing that yes the witches were real after all and religious leaders were right. They did bring out the absurdity and stupidity of those leaders, though, so the show is certainly not purely pandering to religious right wing.
Even though it probably was quite normal to diss girly boys I still didn't like when Shane West's character ridiculed that one man by saying something like "when he was a kid he used to dress like a girl, fought like one, too". Always makes you wonder what do gay actors feel when they have to say lines like that.
I won't be watching this because I simply didn't like the feel of the show.

It's particularly distasteful as many people - including many gay people - are being put on trial for witchcraft and "unnatural practices" in contemporary Russia, the Middle East, Sierra Leone, Nigeria and Uganda - all of it driven by religious zealotry.

Are a bunch of Christians behind this production? Because witches aren't fucking evil. I thought everyone knew that these days. It pisses me off that witches are being shown as baddies in this dumb program.

Is anyone still bothering with this? I see that it has already been renewed for a second season.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | May 7, 2014 9:29 PM |
I've seen a few eps & I like it. I don't see it as being historical, but rather using a historical event as the basis for a "scary" show about evil witches.
And Shane West ain't too hard on the eyes, either.

I like it. I don't see any agenda to it. Witches and demons aren't real. Just as zombies aren't real but look at the success of The Walking Dead.

I've been watching and I find the show entertaining. Sure, it's not going to win any awards, but it's fun to watch. Anyone who is getting upset about it needs to find some real problems.

Is there any gay (male) content? If not, I'm not watching.

This one, too.
