I'm a gay man but still madly in love with her. She won the oscar for "Darling" in 1966 and was Hollywood's "it" girl around that time and represented the swinging 60s when England could do no wrong with their actors and musicians. She was (and still is) a brilliant actress who is as beautiful and poised as she is talented. But she seemed to lose interest in acting as much when she became involved with Warren Beatty in 1967. She could have given Maggie, Helen and Judi a run for their money. What are your thoughts on her datalounge?
Julie Christie

I love her, too. I just watched Far From the Madding Crowd, featuring another actor I love, Alan Bates (who was hot and gay!)

I thought she was great in "Away from her"
by Anonymous | reply 2 | April 10, 2014 11:17 PM |
She is wonderful in that movie, R1, and Terence Stamp is SCORCHING HOT.
I also really like her performance in Shampoo.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | April 10, 2014 11:21 PM |
"Far From the Madding Crowd" is an amazing Schlesinger movie. Christie starred with Bates again in "The Go-Between." She played a far more unpleasant character in the latter, although as beautiful as ever.

She should have won the Oscar for "Away from Her," instead of the frog.

She was amazing in Darling and Doctor Zhivago and Far From the Madding Crowd. Her best mature role had to have been Afterglow. She was fucking terrific - and gorgeous in it.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | April 12, 2014 8:48 PM |
Yes loved afterglow too. Hard to believe Helen hunt could beat her, Judi Dench, Kate Winslet and Helena Bonham Carter for the oscar that year. Classic case of the one American winning against 4 foreigners like Jane Fonda and Marisa Tomei.

Helen Hunt was gifted that Oscar. Julie was transcendent.

by Anonymous | reply 11 | April 12, 2014 9:28 PM |
She's a rare movie actress in that our respect for her talent grows with her age.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | April 12, 2014 9:32 PM |
Let's not forget "McCabe and Mrs Miller" and "Shampoo". Two of my favorites.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | April 12, 2014 9:53 PM |
I wouldn't say she's completely lost interest in acting since her heyday.
She simply chooses to act when she wants. And in two oscar-nominated leading roles, her only leads since she backed away from the limelight, she made huge splashes. The singular grace she brought to Away from Her and the vivid movie star caliber star quality she brought to After Glow were accentuated by both features being considered huge comebacks.
She remains one of the most respected actors of our time. And there is an expectation that she will likely return in a big role when she feels like it; and that if she does it will be something extraordinary.

[quote]Classic case of the one American winning against 4 foreigners like Jane Fonda and Marisa Tomei.
Once again, Marissa Tomei gets kicked for winning an Oscar. She was up against Judy Davis for "Husband & Wives", Joan Plowright for "Enchanted April", Vanessa Redgrave for "Howard's End" and Miranda Richardson for "Damage", all four performances long forgotten. Yeah, and that goes for Judy Davis too. Tomei's win is especially sweet because it was a comedic performance, something the Academy shits on, and audiences still remember it. And she went on to two more Oscar nominations, which none of the others have managed to do.

I was lucky enough to receive more than my fair share of compliments in my day, but when a casting agent told me that he chose me because I had "that Julie Christie thing happening" I nearly died!!!!!

"And she went on to two more Oscar nominations"
She was younger and prettier, so she went on to get better roles than the others. Hollywood is run by straight men, that's why Marisa beat the old ladies like Joan Plowright. They give awards to bimbo "actresses" like Natalie Portman just because they look good. And I don't agree that their performances are more "forgotten" than Marisa's.

All four of those performances were brilliant and are well-remembered. Tomei's not a terrible actress but any one of those four could wipe the floor with her in a glance.
Julie Christie is a lovely actress and one of the most beautiful women of her time. I was glad to see she snagged something in the Harry Potter films or as we call it, the Great English Actors Retirement Fund.

Funnily enough, I still remember that scene with Richardson where she confronts Irons in the kitchen, and do remember that scene with Redgrave where she talks about the future of Britain and Howards End, and I have a friend who teaches acting at NYU who uses Judy Davis scenes from Husbands and Wives in her classes... so hardly long forgotten, OP.

by Anonymous | reply 27 | April 13, 2014 3:36 AM |
Thought anyone could've done her role in "Heaven Can Wait". Think she did it as a last favor to Warren Beatty. Does anyone know exactly when they broke up and what was the final straw? I'm sure he fucked around on her plenty when they were together. Were they ever seriously considering marriage?
by Anonymous | reply 28 | April 13, 2014 3:07 PM |
They were off and on. They were together for "McCabe & Mrs. Miller" in 1971 but apart in 1973 when she called Beatty in a panic because in a screening for "Don't Look Now" she saw that director Nicolas Roeg left in footage showing she was having actual sex with Donald Sutherland. Beatty and the studio had to convince Roeg into editing, Beatty out of protecting her, and the studio to avoid the dreaded X rating.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | April 13, 2014 3:47 PM |
R29 I've heard that story before with Donald Sutherland. Even if she did have a thing going with Sutherland why would she consent to have the camera rolls while fucking him. I think this is too bizarre to believe.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | April 13, 2014 3:56 PM |
Tomei's performance, while amusing, was not really Oscar-worthy. She won because she was the only American in the group of nominees. But in comparison to the performances of the other nominees, it was a lightweight piece of fluff, which is why there was such amazement at her win: "she won an Oscar for THAT?"
by Anonymous | reply 31 | April 13, 2014 4:43 PM |
I always figured Tomei won because the votes were split among the other contestants. It was unbelievable enough that anyone enjoyed that obnoxious and unfunny movie, but then there was that jaw-dropping moment when her name was announced.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | April 13, 2014 4:54 PM |
[quote] I've heard that story before with Donald Sutherland. Even if she did have a thing going with Sutherland why would she consent to have the camera rolls while fucking him. I think this is too bizarre to believe.
Because she's not that bright. She was a hippy. It was the swinging 70's and she trusted the director to be discreet. He wasn't. Now Christie and Sutherland claim it didn't happen, but the story is in Beatty's biography and producer Peter Bart's book who claims he was on set that day.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | April 13, 2014 5:09 PM |
R33 I have seen interviews with Julie and she seems really smart and savvy especially when it comes to Hollywood. She has admitted she was pretty vain around this time (late 60s and through most of 70s) until she realized just how shallow and empty the Hollywood lifestyle could be and started getting interested in other things outside of the industry. Mainly political causes. Guess it's possible around the time of Don't Look Now she could've been idiotic enough to trust her director and fuck in front of a camera.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | April 13, 2014 5:27 PM |
God guys, Tomei had that juicy, juicy scene on the stand. If you saw the film in the theatre you'd know how it landed, and this was in the day when most voters still saw the nominees at academy screenings instead of at home on their computer.
The audience I saw it with walked out buzzing about Tomei and ready to vote for her. The other 4 being Brits in more serious (sort of) films only helped.
BTW, I voted for Davis, and would place Tomei 4th in that group, but I'm not surprised she won. It has more in common with Whoopee Goldberg or Jack Palance winning (delightful performance in a feel good box office hit) than Helen Hunt winning (Academy loses their minds a la Goop winning)
by Anonymous | reply 35 | April 13, 2014 7:07 PM |
How has this become a Marisa Tomei thread? It's clear a lot of people will never understand her win. But I can think of far worse oscar performances.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | April 13, 2014 7:14 PM |
Sure an American nominated against four Brits can stand out and be favored for that spurious reason.
However, Jane Fonda well deserved her oscar for Klute, even with great competition. And Marisa Tomei, though many are fond of belittling her work, was excellent in My Cousin Vinnie, although, r16, I don't agree with you that her rivals's work has been forgotten.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | April 13, 2014 7:15 PM |
Ironically this happened to Julie twice the four Brits up against the American when she lost to Jane Fonda and Helen Hunt.

The Julie Christie sex on film thing is a myth. Just like Jack Nicholson and Meryl Streep having sex on the set of Ironweed.
Not understanding why Marisa Tomei is even mentioned in this thread. She is largely remembered as the Oscar winner who did not deserve to win.

LOVE Julie Christie. A great beauty, a great actress and a true maverick. At the height of her fame, she made movies like Fahrenheit 451, Don't Look Now, McCabe & Miller and Petulia. She rarely played it safe, and made way less garbage than most of her British peers.
I love Far from the Madding Crowd too. There's a new version coming out this year starring a severely miscast Carey Mulligan. Who the fuck would fight over her?

By the standards of 19th century rural England Carey would have been considered a knockout. I prefer Julie, though.

One of the most gorgeous women to ever live. Great actress. Very paranoid about fame and acting. Turned down a ton of great roles. I was shocked she didn't win the Oscar in 2007 (like she was), until I found out she gave like zero interviews while Cottilard had spent months camped in LA.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | April 14, 2014 4:45 AM |

Yeah I believe not campaigning at all cost her the oscar in 2008. But if you ask her she really doesn't give a shit about winning. She works when she has some bills to pay. She really deserved to win though. Who knows? Maybe she lost by only 5 votes. But the campaigning does help if only in a small way to maybe put you over the top in votes. You really have to act like you want it. The more exposure during awards season the better. The performance should speak for itself but you have to help it along too if you hope to win.

She did an interview when Away from Her was released, saying how she only takes occasional parts when she needs money now, except she'll do any film Sarah Polley wants because she loves her so much. Smart woman. If I recall correctly she lives with a bunch of artists and her longtime (male) partner, who's a journalist? I don't remember all the details, but she seemed eccentric in a non-batty way.
Agree on her otherworldly beauty, as well how wonderful she was in McCabe, Petulia, Shampoo, etc.

if I recall correctly, R60, she said she and Beatty are perfectly friendly now, but rarely cross paths and don't have occasion to speak often. She seems to have pretty much distanced herself from Hollywood people and their lifestyle.

Julie Christie was one of the few actresses to actually show up and collect her Oscar in the 60s. Back then, it wasn't uncommon for eventual winners to skip the ceremony (Glenda Jackson, Maggie Smith, Sophia Loren, Anne Bancroft). And she looked really excited to get it!
I suppose she grew out of that. These days, she's known for being anti-establishment and not caring about awards. I think she did some promotion for Away from Her, but I agree she probably would have won the Oscar if she'd campaigned harder.
