She has yet to go wrong on the Red Carpet!
Lupita Nyong'o: Who Is This Girl's Stylist!?!
by Anonymous | reply 283 | April 1, 2019 1:02 PM |
The girl is FLAWLESS. Beautiful face, perfect skin complexion and good style of clothes. She's so beautiful that she can actually rock the very short hairdo.
I love that she's made it now. Hollywood needs someone like her.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | February 20, 2014 7:06 PM |
And one year out of drama school, too!
by Anonymous | reply 4 | February 20, 2014 7:07 PM |
Agreed, OP.
So far, so good. In fact "good" isn't good enough to describe her choices. Excellent is a better word.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | February 20, 2014 7:07 PM |
How tall is she?
by Anonymous | reply 7 | February 20, 2014 7:09 PM |
Have they trashed her on "Fashion Police" yet?
by Anonymous | reply 8 | February 20, 2014 7:10 PM |
She's perfected the art of being devastatingly sexy without showing any skin -- sometimes without even showing a hint of cleavage.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | February 20, 2014 7:14 PM |
Ita I've yet to find one miss not a one. Her and the stylist knows what works for her and compliments her flawless skin. Autumn and bold colors, she's stunning.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | February 20, 2014 7:23 PM |
Her choices are a perfect display of the concept of less is more.
Of course, the beautiful tone of her skin provides an ideal palette for her choices of bold color.
I love color and am so sick of the colorless, dull, washed-out fabrics that lately seemed to be in.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | February 20, 2014 7:28 PM |
Oy! Yes, that's a miss, r16. Did Queen Elizabeth lend that to her?
by Anonymous | reply 19 | February 20, 2014 7:31 PM |
I wouldn't call this a "miss," but I don't really care for it.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | February 20, 2014 7:31 PM |
She looked amazing last night on Letterman and she is so well-spoken.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | February 20, 2014 7:35 PM |
Doesn't count R20. Not Red Carpet. Fashion shoot.
But, if you want to go there... how about THIS!
by Anonymous | reply 23 | February 20, 2014 7:37 PM |
I am wondering if the R16 outfit looks worse because of the angle of the shot. Let's see if there are any other photos of it from a better angle, although it does seem less-so than the others. All the others. So unformed. But kind of a African-class-meet-the-Windsors look.
Lord, she certainly has found a great stylist or team. Better than anyone else's. Her healthy, wholesome, non-idiosyncratic, almost generic look actually adds to the dazzling presentation she makes.
The grease stain on that brownish-beigish-apricotish (what is it?) dress in R11 is unfortunate.
Is there any color that doesn't look wonderful on her? That yellow!
by Anonymous | reply 24 | February 20, 2014 7:39 PM |
If she were white, OP would have a breakdown of all her fashion faux pas.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | February 20, 2014 7:40 PM |
She looked absolutely stunning in that green Dior dress at the Bafta awards. She is upstaging everyone at these award shows. Someone like Beyonce ahould learn from her. You don't need to wear a big ole blonde wig to look good.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | February 20, 2014 7:41 PM |
Right - without the coat overlay it makes more sense.
I think the combination at R20 is great, for what it is.
Did R22 really pull out the condescending "well-spoken" term?
by Anonymous | reply 29 | February 20, 2014 7:42 PM |
I actually like that, r26. If you're going over the top, that's the way to do it.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | February 20, 2014 7:43 PM |
Maybe this seems a little lacking because the clown nose is missing.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | February 20, 2014 7:43 PM |
If she were white, OP would have a breakdown of all her fashion faux pas.
Oooooh, now you've gone all "politically incorrect" on us! I bet you've got goosebumps from that manly assertion of white privilege! You sure told us liberal fascists off, yesiree!
*rolls eyes*
by Anonymous | reply 33 | February 20, 2014 7:45 PM |
She wore open toe sandals at a red carpet event.
Open. Toe. SANDALS.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | February 20, 2014 7:46 PM |
This is an interesting way to see how she brings a sexy-with-class tone to a little number. Nice comparison.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | February 20, 2014 7:47 PM |
But did she wear white after Labor Day?
by Anonymous | reply 37 | February 20, 2014 7:48 PM |
LOVE that, r38.
I'm a bit iffy on the black & white gown. I think it's too much. It's wearing her.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | February 20, 2014 7:51 PM |
I found what might be a slight miss: the shoes with this outfit.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | February 20, 2014 7:52 PM |
R25, if she were white, a lot of these outfits wouldn't work on her, so yeah you might be right about that. (But not for the reason you're thinking.)
by Anonymous | reply 42 | February 20, 2014 7:53 PM |
Obviously she will be a very fashionable maid as her dark skin will prevent her receiving any starring roles.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | February 20, 2014 7:56 PM |
Great body but the face of a man. She is campaigning her ass off for an Oscar.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | February 20, 2014 7:56 PM |
It's not always my taste BUT she is always put together (though I don't know why she chooses ugly shoes so often) but she is always put together impeccably. Nina Garcia would approve of the taste level and Michael Kors would never feel like her gynecologist.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | February 20, 2014 8:02 PM |
Lupita is just slaying everyone in the game right now. Thank goodness for her arrival! I'm sick of the boring, annoying, tired bitches we keep seeing. She's stylish, beautiful and REAL. None of that fake plastic surgery shit.

Yes, r 54 while she's still young enough to get away with it.

Will she play Michelle NdegeOcello in the biopic?
by Anonymous | reply 65 | February 20, 2014 8:52 PM |
She must really enjoy this, because it must be exhausting to have to look perfect in a different outfit every time you're in public.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | February 20, 2014 8:59 PM |
perfection.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | February 20, 2014 9:18 PM |
You have to admit, her skin tone is AMAZING.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | February 20, 2014 9:21 PM |
Lupita is one of the most beautiful women in existence. Imagine what she looks like in real life? Photographs pick up her glow very well, so it must be much more intense in real life.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | February 20, 2014 9:40 PM |

by Anonymous | reply 75 | February 20, 2014 10:34 PM |
I hope Lupita has a long, thriving career and doesn't become corrupted/crazy by the fame game. She really is debuting perfectly. All the other women must be so jealous and I love that. Get it, Lupita!

Oh for fuck sake, just drop dead.
This was a nice thread about an actress and her stylist's fashion sense and you have to waddle your fucking, useless ass in here and pull this bullshit.
You don't know shit about the OP, but you assume he/she is a bigoted shithead like you.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | February 20, 2014 10:51 PM |
She wears bold colors well against her skin. However, that recent green gown as well as the others lately, in my opinion.
by Anonymous | reply 79 | February 20, 2014 10:56 PM |
I hope she is having a great time. She is playing the game, but with class and dignity, and what a beauty. It is a pleasure to look at her, and then a greater one to here her speak. She is joyful and sweet and smart, a bit reserved. Nice combination.
I hope she gets some good roles, and doesn't just remain a red carpet darling. She has real talent and great beauty. Get smart Hollywierd and give her a love interest starring part.
Don't put her with BillyBob, or make her show her tits to Travolta, give her some fine ass man and a good script. Have a go at some sexy murderous glamour. Avoid franchises, Tyler Perry and Catwoman. Just say no to Rosa Parks.
(But when they do it, and they will, she should play Whitney Houston.)
by Anonymous | reply 80 | February 20, 2014 11:05 PM |
My former EA looked just like her. One of the most strikingly beautiful, and nice, women I have ever had the pleasure of knowing.
I miss that woman.

She's gorgeous. Her SAG dress is one of my favorite red carpet looks ever. Can't wait to see what she wears at the Oscars.
by Anonymous | reply 83 | February 21, 2014 12:53 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 89 | February 21, 2014 3:35 AM |
BTW, her stylist appears to be someone named Micalea Erlanger.
by Anonymous | reply 90 | February 21, 2014 3:56 AM |
It's too bad more actresses (and their stylists) don't have such a good sense of what clothes suit them. Lupita is indeed lovely, but isn't it odd we're all shocked that an actress actually looks good on the red carpet? They should *all* look good. Instead, most of them don't even wear clothes that fit properly.
Ok, back to our regularly scheduled programming.
by Anonymous | reply 92 | February 21, 2014 4:12 AM |
I am pretty sure she dated Jared Leto. Could be wrong on this but I think I read this somewhere.
Jared ...grrrr
by Anonymous | reply 93 | February 21, 2014 4:21 AM |
Questions:
When designers loan out these clothes to the stars, do they mind if they get altered? Could that be why there are so many ill fitting garments on the red carpet? What do they with the worn clothes once they are returned?
by Anonymous | reply 94 | February 21, 2014 4:24 AM |
Great question, R94. I'd love to know the mechanics of it too. Do the celebs ever get to keep the gown? (Not sure they'd want it. Can they really be re-worn?)
I know I've read -- prolly on TLo's blog -- the alterations are sometimes done with tape. So that the dress can easily be returned to its original size and condition.
And I hope some designers are volunteering to dress June Squibb. I imagine Armani is not beating down her door. :-(
And I know J. Lawrence has this big deal with C. Dior. I wonder if she ALWAYS has to wear something from them...
by Anonymous | reply 95 | February 21, 2014 4:35 AM |
I wish Lupita would wear this Elie Saab to the Oscars, but it's not going to happen I fear.
At least she will look better than Jennifer Lawrence, in any case.
I wish Lupita would wear this Elie Saab to the Oscars, but it's not going to happen I fear.
She would look amazing in it, but it's a ballgown, and just too much.
by Anonymous | reply 98 | February 23, 2014 2:20 AM |
I effed that up. Meant to sign it, "...but [bold]not[/bold] a ballgown fan.
by Anonymous | reply 99 | February 23, 2014 2:22 AM |
Having grown up wealthy, she probably always had expensive clothes that fit well and so it's natural and easy for her to dress well at this level. A lot of movie stars don't have that advantage.
by Anonymous | reply 100 | February 23, 2014 2:25 AM |
I don't think there is such a thing as "too much" at the Oscars. It's the crown jewel of the awards season. (Unless we mean too much neutral-tones/blandness, like last year's Oscar red carpet.) The only other appropriate events for that kind of gown are Cannes or maybe an AMFAR gala. But like I said, I have managed my expectations about her (not) wearing it.
by Anonymous | reply 101 | February 23, 2014 2:30 AM |
I agree, 9 times out of 10, she looks great. She wears clothes well, and she can pull off a lot of colors, textures, and patterns.
Her makeup artist is a genius.
Does DL agree about the shoes? Tom/Lorenzo always say that she chooses the wrong shoes - it's her weakness. She does often have matchy shoes, or too-plain shoes, but nothing that objectionable, IMO.
by Anonymous | reply 102 | February 23, 2014 2:32 AM |
Is that tater head she styles??
by Anonymous | reply 103 | February 23, 2014 2:32 AM |
I hate Tom and Lorenzo, but I do agree about the Lupita shoe choices: almost always terrible.
by Anonymous | reply 104 | February 23, 2014 2:37 AM |
Judging from the photos, I now understand why she wears pumps almost exclusively! She does not have pretty toes. You can see her toes curl up and the knuckles are very prominent in a couple of pictures where she wore sandals.
She could wear sandals with wider straps or more complicated straps to cover the ugly toes.
by Anonymous | reply 105 | February 23, 2014 2:54 AM |
Having grown up wealthy, she probably always had expensive clothes that fit well and so it's natural and easy for her to dress well at this level. A lot of movie stars don't have that advantage.
She describes her upbringing as middle-class. I have a couple of Kenyan friends who say her speech/accent is typical of upper middle-class or wealthy, Kenyans.

huh. THR posted a list about a year ago, of the 25 Most Powerful Stylists in Hollywood for 2013. (Rachel Zoe was #3).
Lupita's stylist was not listed. Wanna bet she'll be in the Top 10 this year?
by Anonymous | reply 116 | February 27, 2014 1:44 PM |
Her father was a politically active college professor who got elected to the Kenyan senate last year. He was teaching in Mexico when she was born but her family returned to Kenya when she was just a few months old. Apparently he'd gotten into trouble with the autocratic regime at the time as he had been identified as one of those who'd fanned a student movement for democracy.
by Anonymous | reply 117 | February 27, 2014 1:54 PM |
From wiki, her family seems pretty accomplished:
Father: Peter Anyang Nyong'o - Former college professor turned politician. Elected to the Kenyan senate in 2013.
Mother: Dorothy Nyong'o - Managing director of the African Cancer foundation.
Uncle: Aggrey Nyong'o (late) - prominent Kenyan physician known for some groundbreaking work in his field.
Cousin: Isis Nyong'o - Stanford alum. Named one of Africa's most powerful women by Forbes magazine for her work in the tech field.
Cousin: Tavia Nyong'o - A scholar and professor at NYU.
Cousin: Kwame Nyong'o - An illustrator, animator and children's book writer in Nairobi, Kenya.
Having grown up wealthy, she probably always had expensive clothes that fit well and so it's natural and easy for her to dress well at this level. A lot of movie stars don't have that advantage.
I think actually that is more of a third world vs first world difference. People in third world countries are more concerned about carrying themselves well and about personal presentation that looks good and commands respect. Even without having much money they will tend to do their best to look immaculate and nicely dressed. People in first world countries, especially white ones, tend to celebrate comfortable and casual and not to work much on things like their posture. I can't recall ever hearing someone from the third world describing looking scruffy as "being real".
I've seen Lupita mention that her mother required Lupita and her siblings to always set out and iron their clothes for the next day. When was the last time you heard that about American kids, rich or poor?
Third world people also tend to be a lot more physically fit and active than most Americans, which creates a better and more poised body.

The dress is gorgeous from the waist down, but from the waist up, completely unflattering. Considering how high she's set the bar for herself, I'd call it a miss.

by Anonymous | reply 155 | March 3, 2014 1:22 AM |
It's sort of as if she decided that this was the most formal of all the awards shows, so she chose something more safe and subdued (both the color and the style.) She looks better in brighter colors.

by Anonymous | reply 157 | March 3, 2014 7:15 AM |
I didn't like the color. The dress was safe. It reminded me of a doll's dress. A metallic dress would have worked great at this venue. I noticed her makeup gave a matte appearance. When the camera swept across the audience you saw shiny faces and her not shiny face.
by Anonymous | reply 158 | March 3, 2014 7:25 AM |

The. Goddess. Lupita.
Bow down, serfs.
by Anonymous | reply 161 | March 3, 2014 11:10 AM |
For me, her dress was a knockout in a different sort of way. Yup! Everyone was expecting a "hit the ball out of the park" given her other red carpet appearances. This dress did so too but in a more subtle way.
The way the dress moved and how Lupita wore it reminded me of those Chanel commercials. I immediately thought that Chanel should be calling her right away. The dress was a "fairy princess" type dress which any girl (and a lot of boys)would like to wear. Given her acceptance speech, the dress was very appropriate.

by Anonymous | reply 164 | March 3, 2014 1:34 PM |

It's the spirit of the dress R167. Refer to my R162 comment. I felt that way about Lupita's dress prior to learning of the article.
by Anonymous | reply 168 | March 3, 2014 2:30 PM |
loved loved her Oscar dress. The color, movement, etc. were just beautiful.
by Anonymous | reply 169 | March 3, 2014 2:42 PM |
The way she gracefully held up those voluminous skirts while ascending to the stage made her look very much like a princess. She is pure class.
It would be cruel to compare it to any other actress' recent mishaps, so I won't.

Yes! Yes! Yas!!! R170

The color and fabric of the dress were lovely but I did not like the bodice. I don't like those deep cuts to the waist on anyone but it was especially unfortunate on her with her very flat chest. I also didn't care for the band in her hair and it was the first time I thought her hair was unflattering. It just didn't work with that dress.
by Anonymous | reply 172 | March 3, 2014 2:51 PM |
Reminds me of Gwyneth Paltrow's chest bones in that pink princess Oscar dress of hers.
by Anonymous | reply 173 | March 3, 2014 2:55 PM |
I liked the dress by the end of the evening but found it underwhelming at first. I was expecting something bolder in color and in cut. But the color and the skirt grew on me.
Like with Gwyneth, wearing a dress that accentuates that you have no chest is not a good idea. I never realized Lupita was so flat-chested until last night.
So, top half - miss; bottom half - hit.
by Anonymous | reply 174 | March 3, 2014 3:06 PM |
I may be in a minority but I like Nyong'o small boobs, R165. She has a model's build, and looks fabulous in almost anything. She'd look awful with the artificial tits that are so prevalent in Hollywood, people have forgotten what real tits look like.
by Anonymous | reply 177 | March 3, 2014 11:21 PM |
Anyone remember Spy magazine? They used to call this the "I'm ready for my autopsy, Mr. Coroner" look.
I think Lupita is great, and I loved the dress as long as I wasn't looking at her chest bones. She doesn't need fake mega-tits but it would have been better if she had a little more fat covering her sternum. Oh well can't have everything I guess.
Over all, I thought she looked like an angel in that heavenly blue dress. The headband was a delightfully girlish touch and I'm surprised at how well it worked with her edgier hair cut. The earrings were a touch much tho. I would have gone with either the headband or the earrings, not both. JMO.
by Anonymous | reply 179 | March 3, 2014 11:33 PM |
I like her small bust too, R177 but I don't find that plunging neckline the most flattering. But she has fantastic poise and as you say can pull off just about anything.
BTW, where was Fassbender during Lupita's acceptance speech?
by Anonymous | reply 180 | March 3, 2014 11:36 PM |
He was gone for quite a while. I noticed a seat filler was in his seat when they were doing the group pic in the aisle and he was still gone through Lupita's award. I read somewhere that he was in the lobby and I assumed he was smoking. I thought it was too bad that he wasn't there for the big moment. It seems rather inconsiderate.
by Anonymous | reply 181 | March 3, 2014 11:45 PM |
It does R181. Perhaps passive aggressive considering she turned him down?
by Anonymous | reply 182 | March 3, 2014 11:48 PM |
Well, he started out being a favorite for awards and along the way they stopped talking about him. He had a very long flight to get there and I think he's a serious smoker. He may have just burned out.

by Anonymous | reply 185 | March 4, 2014 12:35 AM |
Maybe he went for a smoke, then he got the runs and was stuck on the toilet.
In any case, I doubt it was because he's mad at her. They talk about each other glowingly and have not gone out of their way to avoid contact with one another (unlike McQueen and Ripley).
by Anonymous | reply 186 | March 4, 2014 12:51 AM |
True R186, but things can sneak up on you in weird ways... I just find it odd that he wasn't there.
by Anonymous | reply 187 | March 4, 2014 3:03 AM |
Probably bored to tears and went for a drink and smoke.
by Anonymous | reply 188 | March 4, 2014 4:04 AM |

I'm the one who initially posted first impressions about that Nairobi blue dress being underwhelming given expectations, then about it starting to grow on me as the night moved on. By the they pronounced her the winner and she was making her way upstage, it had, for me, the prettiest dress of the night. It was perfect and I agree about it flowing and moving beautifully and magically like a fairy tale.
She switched dresses into a lovely Miu Miu outfit for the VF party but I'm now glad she went with that light, beautiful, princessy, Nairobi blue gown.
by Anonymous | reply 190 | March 4, 2014 3:19 PM |
She looks great in the Miu Miu dress too, but it doesn't have the charm or drama of that flowing and princessy (as you so rightly put it) blue gown. I really liked the romantic feeling and there was something delightfully girlish about the way she paired it with the headband. She was simply radiant!
by Anonymous | reply 191 | March 4, 2014 3:34 PM |
She looks like a model.
by Anonymous | reply 192 | March 4, 2014 3:54 PM |
I love the fact that she is gorgeously African with glowing black skin and sensual black features and huge, sparkling brown eyes.
None of that Beyonce face-bleaching and blonde wigs.
by Anonymous | reply 193 | March 4, 2014 4:28 PM |
The blonde wig/weave is one of the worst things to have happened to black women. Kill them all (the wigs).
by Anonymous | reply 194 | March 4, 2014 4:45 PM |
High Fashion Girls should not do boobs. I am so very glad that Lupita's fabulous albeit rather horizontal bod did complete justice to that sky-blue dream of a dress.
Can you imagine the beautiful lines of the gown being destroyed by protruding breasts? Quelle horreur!
by Anonymous | reply 195 | March 4, 2014 6:06 PM |
R176 While I generally like the dress, the picture there makes it look like she's getting ready for take-off. It's Lupita the flying squirrel!
by Anonymous | reply 196 | March 4, 2014 6:18 PM |
God this girl has it all. But 141 sounds like a bitter have-not. Third world, schmird world. It's backwards.
by Anonymous | reply 197 | March 4, 2014 6:38 PM |
In the pic at R195, you can get a better view of the skirt; it had a lighter second layer and some sparkly bits on the top layer. When Tyson Beckford was talking to her, the camera zoomed in on the skirt and it looked much more interesting.
And she looked fab in the Miu Miu! She's stunning in white.
by Anonymous | reply 198 | March 4, 2014 6:46 PM |

We will be able to mark this horrendous mis-step as the moment when public opinion turned on darling Lupito. I think I speak for everyone when I say we were rapidly tiring of her uber-manicured appearances and eye-rollingly rehearsed interviews. If she said she was "blessed" to be on this "journey" one more time, everyone woulda slapped her. And we've also had more than enough of the public relations canard that she was some poor, unfortunate, undiscovered African waif who just happened to rocket to stardom. She is a rich, educated woman in her mid 30s with mucho influential connections, not some wide-eyed innocent who just fell off the Nigerian turnip truck.

Dear Lulu is just too avant-garde for DL. And thank god for that.
by Anonymous | reply 229 | May 7, 2014 3:24 PM |
And when she referred to the gorgeous green Prada number as her 'taxi dress', she meant the dress was similar in spirit - if not in form - as those Charles James creations that were so well-made that they could be slipped on at the back of a cab.
From Wiki:
'According to Harold Koda, The Costume Institute curator in charge, James "transformed fashion design" and his "many advancements included the spiral cut and the taxi dress (created in 1929 and so easy to wear it could be slipped on in the backseat of a taxi)."[6] '
So the green dress was a rather clever and witty tribute to Charles James after all.
And it's fun and daring, absolutely the kind of risk-taking creation suited for a gala at the Metropolitan MUSEUM.

obviously R241 knows nothing about fashion. Her skin tone is amazing for all different types of colors. Very pale white skin looks great with muted or a strong reds. Dark even skin like Lupita's looks amazing with strong pops of bright colors, color blocking, avant grade pieces. You won't see her stylist putting her in a soft floral pastel dress.

I think she's beautiful, but find that red dress very, very dull. Personally, I think it fails her in many ways, not the least of which is it almost blends her with the carpet creating the image of a floating head and arms. She deserved better than that.
