Do you think Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy ever fucked?

They seem like oil and water. Was it just a bearding situation?

Beard. She never really had a man and could pretend she did with him.

during drunken stupors (even a stopped clock is right twice a day etc.)

I think they tried being straight with each other but couldn't. Became soulmates. An actor's life is a lonely life and they were well suited to support each other in their careers. Their movies together were successful. Their writers friends would write for them or find them the best scripts for decades. I think they respected each other very much and settled for a loveless life.

I don't doubt for a second that they screwed people of the same sex with their $$$ left and right and that's the only reason they resided on Cukor's estate. (They had separate houses there contrary to popular belief. Hepburn moved in with Tracy only the very last year when he required medical attention.) They would never come out, Cukor would never dish, and I think all three of them considered being a homo a regretable, shameful flaw they didn't even speak about.

Tracy would have died much younger if it hadn't been for Hepburn holding his hand and being a nag about his drinking, and Hepburn would have been outed and her career ended without him giving her straight credentials in Hollywood. This was an absolute necessity otherwise she would have had to quit like Garbo.

I think they led a miserable life. They loved each other very much indeed, like two comrades of misery.

Hepburn could have had a shot at happiness hadn't she been such a self-loather. Scared shitless of having her reputation ruined. She became friend with Navratilova at the time Martina was going through a very public lesbian divorce, the first of the kind. Hepburn wrote Martina a letter telling her she was living a "terrifying but thrilling life". The perceived terror on Hepburn's mind says it all really. She must have admired Martina's courage. I wish Hepburn had courage too. What a wonderful role model she would have become.

Spencer Tracy's earlier long term affair with Loretta Young was far more passionate than anything he and Hepburn had together.

by Anonymousreply 4May 1, 2015 8:18 PM

Hepburn has all the sensuality of an alarm clock.

by Anonymousreply 5May 1, 2015 8:22 PM

Who?

by Anonymousreply 6May 1, 2015 8:24 PM

Watch her in The Philadelphia Story, Woman of the Year and Summertime and she's pretty sensual imo

by Anonymousreply 7March 30, 2018 1:18 PM

What were their best films together? I think Adams Rib, Pat and Mike and Desk Set.

by Anonymousreply 8March 30, 2018 1:20 PM

According to Scotty Bowers, Hepburn was a major dyke, Tracey was gay, and he procured women and men for each of them.

Wonderful post R3. Please give us a ring when you come to Paris this sumer.

Each other?

by Anonymousreply 11March 30, 2018 1:32 PM

I read the William Mann biography. It seems like after her brothers suicide she had a mission to "rescue " damaged men. Spencer was just another man she hero worshipped and wanted to look after.

They were captivating in Woman of the Year. A great movie

by Anonymousreply 13May 1, 2019 4:43 PM

He had a wife. If he was gay, why would he need two beards?

by Anonymousreply 14May 1, 2019 4:45 PM

I don't care about their private life what's their best movies?

by Anonymousreply 15May 1, 2019 4:48 PM

[quote]I think they tried being straight with each other but couldn't.

My opinion as well. That was very, very common with gay people back then.

by Anonymousreply 16May 1, 2019 4:49 PM

Spencer had a wife; why would he need to recruit additional "beards."

by Anonymousreply 17May 1, 2019 4:55 PM

Was Woman of the Year a good movie?

Tracy and his wife lived separate lives, although they never divorced. Hepburn and Tracy were very much products of their time. They could not be out about their sexuality any more than any other major star of the time. They aren't the only ones. Surely they were close friends and I suppose Hepburn had a soft spot for tormented men (like her brother)- although not necessarily as romantic partners. Mann's bio of Hepburn, LIz Smith's information, and Scotty Bowers book pretty much corroborate that both were predominantly gay. I might point out that all three of these "authors" did not out them while still living. While I admire Hepburn for her great career and iconoclastic life, I was pretty let down by her end of life tale of she and Tracy being a great romance. Her career and acting legacy were secure, why did she have to burnish it with a tall tale. Apparently it horrified a number of her friends who knew otherwise. But she was a master at managing her image. The great star sacrificed a lot of herself in my opinion. And Tracy sounds like he was a miserable person- nothing like the solid self assured and grounded characters her played in films.

A write up about Tracy.

Her 'romance' with Tracy burnished her legend further like you said and the older she got the more she was concerned with her image. It only intensified people's idolizing of her and of course as an actress who continued to work this was very important to her. She was still getting leading roles until she was fairly old and great pr helped land those parts. She wouldn't be relegated to supporting roles. Her relationship with Tracy was an important part of it. She wanted to work, she wanted to spout off opinions and she wanted to know people were still interested in her. To come out as a lesbian at that point in her life was counterproductive to the career she wanted to maintain.

Even today if you want to have a career in leading roles in major motion pictures you'd be a fool to come out of the closet. If that kind of personal integrity is important to you don't expect the kind of careers Tracy and Hepburn had. Expect the careers of a Andrew Rannells or Lea DeLaria. Not a Sandra Bullock or Tom Cruise.

I'm probably in the minority here on this, but people who late in life come out with tales about their old co-stars - I usually wish they would have kept those stories to themselves.

The more old Hepburn went on and on about "Spenc'r", the more I wished she would just shut up.

The same is true of Joan Collins more recent jabs at John Forsythe. These stories don't make me think better of Collins.

Blab, blab, blab.

" I think they respected each other very much and settled for a loveless life. "

Having a close, supportive friend doesn't make your life "loveless", and it seems that those two were the kind of close, supportive friend that a person is lucky to have. Or at least Hepburn was supportive!

But didn't either one have romantic, passionate love as well as a best friend? Didn't Hepburn have several serious long-lasting relationships with women? How about Tracy? Did he ever experience real love with another man, and would anyone alive today know if he had?

by Anonymousreply 25May 1, 2019 11:30 PM

R24 your comment made me think of Suzanne Pleshette speaking about DL fave Patty Duke. Towards the end of her relatively short life which I assume was due to cigarette smoking she spoke with fond memories of her entire career and those she worked with except for Duke. The bitterness was still very strong as if the experience had just happened and she made no excuses for Duke due to her youth or later revelations of mental illness. It was very surprising and she did not hold back. At this point in her life was it necessary? Clearly it was a hell for her that remained raw.

I think woman of the year was their best movie. Anyone else agree?
