Male Models... today

Remember the Golden Era of male models? I'm thinking about Matt Norklun, Buzzy Kerbox and Attila von Somogyi. I know Buzzy Kerbox is into big-wave surfing and runs a surf school in HI... what are the rest of those guys doing, anyone know?

by Anonymousreply 80June 7, 2021 9:12 PM

Does nobody remember these guys!?

by Anonymousreply 1February 11, 2014 4:27 AM

Matt Norklun is the only name I recognize. I believe he, like Joe Kloenne, still models (silver seniors category). What era is considered the Golden Era? Other memorable '80s models were Rick Edwards, Joey Gallinghouse, Bruce Hulse, Hoyt Richards, Fred Souza, Bob Menna, Tom Hintnaus, Jeff Aquilon, Tim Easton, and Michael Flinn. And then there are the '90s male supermodels, Alex Lundqvist, Mark Vanderloo, Joel West, Marcus Schenkenberg, and Tyson Beckford.

I used to think Michael Ives was so handsome. The ultimate preppie look:

Not so handsome today:

Buzzy Kerbox was about as handsome as it gets.

Bruce Hulse was an excellent specimen:

by Anonymousreply 13February 14, 2014 9:26 PM

Michael Ives was the first male model I noticed in a big way (GQ swimsuit issue in 1979, IIRC). He seemed like such a normal guy compared to the usual GQ cover models who, up to that point, seemed older than me. Michael, OTOH, seemed like someone my own age--someone I'd hang out with IRL.

I joined a gym as a result of reading that issue. Thanks, Michael Ives (and Russell Penis, who would appear on the cover of WORKING OUT a couple of years later).

by Anonymousreply 14February 14, 2014 9:41 PM

Hoyt is an arrogant nut case that joined a cult that was all blond aryan looking people that felt they were THE CHOSEN. He gave all his money to the cult leader, got exposed for the idiot that he is and couldn't get any more jobs. Then played the victim card for years.

by Anonymousreply 15February 14, 2014 11:12 PM

R3, that's not Michael Ives!

by Anonymousreply 16February 15, 2014 9:11 PM

Does anyone know what happened to Bruno Santos? He was a big model between 2004-2006. The last trace I could find of him was from 2011. It seems his career hit the skids in 2008.

by Anonymousreply 17October 13, 2014 6:23 AM

There was an extremely handsome model whose name I can't remember, and my description probably won't help much. He had thick, wavy dirty-blond hair and masculine features, including a strong chin and nose, and was often tan, though not overly so. I believe he modeled for Ralph Lauren. He was popular in the late 80s and early 90s, I think. Not Joel West.

by Anonymousreply 18October 13, 2014 11:43 AM

God you people are fucking old.

by Anonymousreply 19October 13, 2014 12:05 PM

don't know any of those names

I admit that I don't know any of the 80s models being discussed (I do recognize the 90s names), but is that really Russell's last name?

by Anonymousreply 22October 13, 2014 12:28 PM

Mark Kleckner. Does anyone know what became of him? Can't find him in Google past 2004

by Anonymousreply 23January 24, 2015 1:48 PM

Any recent photos of Tony Spinelli? Wasn't his real name Marco something or am I confusing him with another dark curly haired Italian model of the 1980s?

by Anonymousreply 24January 24, 2015 2:06 PM

It was actually Henis, R22.

by Anonymousreply 25January 24, 2015 2:08 PM

R26, I remember both Andrew Smith and his brother Sinjin. They were both nationally ranked beach volleyball players. Anybody know what happened to them?

by Anonymousreply 33January 26, 2016 12:44 AM

John Pearson, 1992. He had been modeling since at least 1984.

by Anonymousreply 37January 26, 2016 11:07 AM

Remember when Merv Griffin would devote an episode of his talk show to models? That was some good tv, watching Merv drool over the guys.

by Anonymousreply 38January 26, 2016 11:27 AM

R33, Sinjin runs beach volleyball camps for kids in Santa Monica. I see him all the time in the summer. He almost typifies the Southern California beach boy stereotype, even at his age.

by Anonymousreply 39January 26, 2016 1:24 PM

Hey thanks, R39.

by Anonymousreply 40January 26, 2016 3:59 PM

OP. if you can find it on eBay or Amazon, check out "Not Just Another Pretty Face" by Karen Hardy. Full color pix and biographies of many of the names mentioned here: Rick Edwards, Sinjin and Andrew Smith, Michael Ives, Bill Curry - the same folks who WERE GC in the 70s and 80s.

Interesting how cookie-cutter the look was back then: The square jawed, blonde, blue eyed All American Rick Edwards type. Few minorities .

Knew Hoyt Richards' family. They all looked like him: tall, athletic, blue eyed and blonde Aryans. No wonder he fell into the "perfect race" cult!

by Anonymousreply 41January 26, 2016 4:18 PM

R41, I never heard of Richards but I just googled his image and it is interesting that I didn't see a single photo, posed or candid, of him with anyone of color.

by Anonymousreply 43January 26, 2016 4:28 PM

I'm familiar with a few of the names mentioned above, but I've found it easier to trace the career paths of British and European models. Some did quite well, some train-wrecks and some faded into obscurity.

R41- the cookie-cutter look applies to non-white models and don't you forget it. The idea that there's more "diversity" in the industry these days is a total lie. They're still six foot to six foot three, still square-jawed and still stuffing their socks down their y-fronts, and it doesn't matter if they're black, white or anything in between.

by Anonymousreply 44January 26, 2016 4:34 PM

They lost their reason for living when they lost their youth.

by Anonymousreply 45January 26, 2016 4:51 PM

This thread should be called white male models age fast and not well.

Which male models were/are gay?

Good God! White sure does crack. Now compare him to Tyson Beckford, who is only 2 years younger.
