Danish TV Show "Rita" on Netflix streaming

Great show, check it out DL! It's about a non-conventional high school teacher ad her family. I know, I know…but really it's not what you think and it's great to see a non-American point of view. She even has a gay teenage son and they don't shy away from him, dating, kissing and having sex…so refreshing.

The added bonus is everyone is HOT! Especially the oldest son and Rita is sexy as well.

I hear that there's an American remake being made with Anna Gunn in the lead (she plays Skyler on Breaking Bad). As much as I love Anna Gunn, I don't think an American studio will do it justice, even on cable.

The American version isn't going forward. They shot a pilot and the network passed on it. Gunn's signed on for another show--the remake of "Broadchurch"--instead.

They are also streaming the very interesting and entertaining French crime drama 'Spiral'.

by Anonymousreply 3January 2, 2014 3:49 AM

I've never heard of it but I see this being a big hit. Were you in the 2014 thread? I wrote it there. Thought it was Iceland.

by Anonymousreply 4January 2, 2014 4:04 AM

Thanks OP! I couldn't sleep tonight so I've been watching. Great show. I'm gay as a goose, but the actress playing Rita is sexy as hell.

by Anonymousreply 5January 2, 2014 8:21 AM

Thanks for the recommendation, OP. I fucking love Danish shows.

by Anonymousreply 6January 2, 2014 9:44 AM

Yeah let's watch a program with subtitles. How pathetic are you, JUST how PATHETIC ARE YOU???

by Anonymousreply 7January 2, 2014 11:22 AM

[r7] go back to Duck Dynasty: no subtitles and it probably better reflects your values. Cheers.

by Anonymousreply 8January 2, 2014 3:02 PM

Everyone looks similar to Hayden Christensen, especially the youngest son. Then discovered that his Canadian father is of Danish and English ancestry, while his American mother is half Italian and half Swedish.

by Anonymousreply 9January 2, 2014 3:10 PM

Loved Rita, can't wait for season 2 on Netflix. Lars (the father of the brat that Rita screwed in the bathroom) was HOT!

by Anonymousreply 10January 2, 2014 3:16 PM

Loved this show! A friend who speaks Danish told me a lot of what is said doesn't make the subtitles but obviously what is there is enough. Love the woman who plays Rita. Don't see Anna Gunn having that sexy presence. I quite like the very blonde head teacher and enjoy the 3 kids characters. Hopefully season 2 will be on soon.

by Anonymousreply 11January 2, 2014 4:02 PM

I've only seen the first episode, but I quite liked it. The Scandinavians really do put out some quality tv.

Check out Broen/ Bron. Loved the original and tried to watch the American version. Horrible.

by Anonymousreply 14January 2, 2014 4:18 PM

But I thought all Ritas were bitches.

by Anonymousreply 15January 2, 2014 4:19 PM

Check out "Klown" on Hulu. It's like a Danish Curb Your Enthusiasm but even more outrageous.

Anyone else watched season 2 yet? I got fed up waiting for season 2 to be on Netflix, so I found a torrent that had the eps with English subtitles. The new teacher is an oily sonavabitch, ain't he?

Not in English. No thanks. I have nothing against foreign films or subtitles but sitcoms just don't work for me when I have to read the jokes.

by Anonymousreply 20July 4, 2014 10:52 PM

It's not a sitcom, for one thing. For another, why would you think a Danish TV show would be in English?

by Anonymousreply 21July 4, 2014 11:01 PM

R21, I don't recall saying I expected it to be. For some reason I got the impression it was a sitcom. I'll check it out.

by Anonymousreply 22July 4, 2014 11:08 PM

Season 1 is on Netflix. It's more of a drama with a humorous tinge, but not a comedy.

by Anonymousreply 23July 4, 2014 11:21 PM

I loved Season 1..I've never done the torrent thing. Is it hard to do?

by Anonymousreply 24July 5, 2014 1:21 AM

Not at all. Once you've done it, you'll see it's pretty easy. Download and install a torrent client (I use uTorrent). Once you find a torrent to download (kickass.to is a great site) you'll click on the Download Torrent button. It will download the torrent file, which you open with the uTorrent program. uTorrent will then download all the files in the torrent.

The torrent in the Rita link contains the videos and the SRT (subtitles). I use VLC media player and it automatically plays the subtitles with the video.

A hint about browsing torrents: look for ones with a lot of Seeders (people that are sharing the complete file). The more seeders there are, the faster it will download.

Leechers are people who are sharing only the part of the torrent they have downloaded. Generally, if a torrent has no seeders and plenty of leechers, don't bother.

by Anonymousreply 26July 5, 2014 1:48 AM

R24 how'd you do on the downloading?

by Anonymousreply 29July 8, 2014 11:20 PM

OP, thank you so much for the recommendation! I just watched the first episode and I love it. Rita is fabulous and she has some hot sons!

by Anonymousreply 30July 9, 2014 12:08 AM

Ricco is just ok to me, but Jeppe (the younger one) is gorgeous

by Anonymousreply 32July 17, 2014 9:00 PM

Been waiting on Season 2 since December. I take it that it's not on US Netflix yet either? I'm on UK Netflix

thanks R25 think I will try that.

by Anonymousreply 33July 17, 2014 9:05 PM

I just finished watching season 1 last night. I quite enjoyed it, despite the fact that there was no Jeppe nudity.

by Anonymousreply 34July 19, 2014 12:43 PM

Bump

Season 2 now on Netflix streaming

by Anonymousreply 35March 12, 2015 7:52 PM

Season 2 was great, downloaded it on torrent last year.

If it's on Netflix, that means season 3 should start soon in Denmark...note to self, check torrents daily...

by Anonymousreply 36March 12, 2015 8:02 PM

I am facing great difficulties in finding a torrent with English subtitles for both the seasons.

Can someone please send a link?

by Anonymousreply 37March 12, 2015 8:10 PM

The Danish, original version of The Bridge is on US Netflix, why not The Killing, Borgen and Rita?

by Anonymousreply 38March 12, 2015 8:20 PM

Season 1 of Rita was on US Netflix 2 years ago, that when I saw it.

I agree, though, Borgen should be on there

by Anonymousreply 39March 12, 2015 8:37 PM

I just got the email notice today that Season 2 is up on Netflix. Can't wait. Loved the first season, and I need something to watch now that I've finished Kimmy Schmidt (which was fantastic, by the way.).

by Anonymousreply 40March 12, 2015 9:06 PM

Thanks for the recommendations. I also need something to watch when I finisH house of Cards and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

by Anonymousreply 41March 12, 2015 11:32 PM

Just read that Netflix is funding a third season of Rita. Great show. Thanks OP for the recommendation

by Anonymousreply 42March 13, 2015 10:23 PM

I love this show. I know the American remak stalled. I'm glad. It would never work with American sensibilities, and I don't think any actress could do the role better than Mille Denisen.

by Anonymousreply 43March 15, 2015 5:25 PM

Just starting season two.

by Anonymousreply 44March 17, 2015 4:18 PM

Nude principal in episode two of the second season

by Anonymousreply 45March 19, 2015 6:51 PM

Tried watching it, but never got into it. Maybe I should give it another go.

I did watch Dicte, which was alright.

by Anonymousreply 46March 19, 2015 8:10 PM

Thanks OP et al for recommending this show.

I loved it - binged both seasons in about a week and a half.

Any word of when Season 3 will be available? Has it aired in Denmark yet?

by Anonymousreply 47March 25, 2015 4:18 PM

by Anonymousreply 48April 2, 2015 5:11 AM

Just finished season two.I agree, it's a great series.

by Anonymousreply 49April 12, 2015 12:03 AM

Hi

The show is airing in Denmark right now - season 3 episode 6/7 was just aired tonight :) I love the show - and think it is awesome that people outside of Denmark likes the show too.

by Anonymousreply 50April 20, 2015 7:40 PM

Thanks for the info R50. Can't wait until we get it here (in the States) on Netflix.

by Anonymousreply 51April 23, 2015 1:05 AM

Glad to hear season 3 is on in Denmark now, hopefully it won't be long until it's here in the US. Love this show!

by Anonymousreply 52April 23, 2015 5:27 AM

I'm usually anti subtitles because J feel that reading them takes me out of the show, but after seeing it recommended on DL I'm binging on this show and it's great.

I'm glad that the U.S. remake was shelved. It would have been watered down and sanitized for the delicate American sensibilities.

by Anonymousreply 53June 5, 2015 2:58 AM

Can't wait for season 3 to come to the U.S. It's such a great show. And yes, no way would a U.S. version work.

by Anonymousreply 54June 5, 2015 3:04 AM

BUMP

Season 3 is now on Netflix!!!

by Anonymousreply 55June 15, 2015 7:37 PM

That was quick! So glad it's back so soon.

by Anonymousreply 56June 16, 2015 3:16 AM

I have loved the show (read about it on DL) and finished the first two seasons in about two weeks of semi-bingeing. My only problem is Rita's excessive smoking. You'd figure her kids would do an intervention or something. The cancer society in Denmark apparently has condemned it. And I don't think anybody else on the show even smokes, which is weird.

Still, am looking forward to starting Season 3.

by Anonymousreply 57June 16, 2015 3:43 AM

I'm watching season 3 now, love this show. It's like nothing you see on American television. Everybody is so "adult," even the kids, if you know what I mean.

by Anonymousreply 58June 16, 2015 3:50 AM

The translation is awful. They omit so much dialogue.

by Anonymousreply 59June 16, 2015 3:52 AM

Jeppe (Nikolaj Groth) is so cute! He's like a better version of Hayden Christensen.

by Anonymousreply 60June 16, 2015 1:51 PM

Any other way to watch this other than torrent or Netflix?

by Anonymousreply 61June 16, 2015 2:36 PM

r26 Seeders AND leechers are good. The leechers don't take anything away from you, on the contrary it will download the parts they already have from them too. The more a torrent has of both the better.

by Anonymousreply 62June 16, 2015 3:30 PM

by Anonymousreply 63June 24, 2015 8:07 AM

Just finished S3. Love the show. Barely showed her kids this season, other than the gay one. Her Pakistani love interest was HOT. Loved his eyelashes and soft tummy. Rita is still sexy as hell. The finale really makes me want a season 4 soon.

by Anonymousreply 64June 27, 2015 9:31 PM

Rita spinoff, "Hjordis", is now on Netflix.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 65July 13, 2015 9:12 PM

Loving this show. Rita is very sexy. Can't see Anna Gunn having the same quality. Rita is a Linda Hamilton type. World weary, but like, funny and sexual. Susan Sarandon could've played it 25 years ago.

I could actually see Vera Farmiga doing it.

by Anonymousreply 66July 14, 2015 12:00 AM

Loving the Hjordis spin off.

by Anonymousreply 67July 14, 2015 2:58 AM

Her older son is sexy as fuuuuck and dresses like a stud.

by Anonymousreply 68July 14, 2015 7:53 AM

Loving "Hjordis" but it's weird seeing the school without Rita--and Helle also seems a bit different.

Both of these shows make me want to visit Denmark. A friend of mine spent 6 months working there and loved the people but hated the food.

by Anonymousreply 69July 15, 2015 2:14 PM

This show would be perfect if there was some Jeppe nudity

by Anonymousreply 70July 26, 2015 4:52 PM

If you guys like Danish TV series you should check out the crimi drama Broen/The Bridge. Season 2 nearly made me shit in my pants several times. Just bloody brilliant.

by Anonymousreply 71July 26, 2015 5:02 PM

Another great Danish TV show with phenomenal acting is Arven/The legacy. It's brilliant and the acting is beyond this world. You can tell these actors are professionally trained at the fine royal theatre academy.

by Anonymousreply 74July 26, 2015 5:21 PM

Hah! Glad to see some Danish success. Btw, there is male nudity in Arven. Unlike the UK and US we Danes aren't afraid of penises being shown on national TV. Infact I think there are more male nudity in DK than female nudity.

by Anonymousreply 75July 26, 2015 5:28 PM

I see the actor who plays Rasmus, the former school principal, is also in "The Legacy."

by Anonymousreply 76July 26, 2015 5:33 PM

I can't believe Hjordis got her own spinoff and I had no idea it existed. Thank you for mentioning it!!!!

Seasons 1 and 2 of Rita are as good as series television gets. Season 3 is a disaster. They made a mistake by abandoning her family storylines and focusing on the school too much. Maybe it's because she becomes so much more stable and effective at harnessing her power--she's not a live wire anymore. It's rare that a tv show can go that wrong without jumping the shark but Rita s3 manages to do it--it's boring without violating the history of what came before it.

by Anonymousreply 77July 27, 2015 2:12 AM

I'm binge watching Rita Season 4. She is a lesbian?!

BUMP

by Anonymousreply 78January 17, 2018 12:25 AM

If I liked "Dicte", would I like "Rita"?

by Anonymousreply 79January 17, 2018 12:36 AM

Ha, maybe r79, my mom watches both.

by Anonymousreply 80January 17, 2018 12:38 AM

Reading the synopsis of this show I know for a fact I've seen it before, but none of the actors look familiar...WTF?

by Anonymousreply 81January 17, 2018 2:29 AM

Ah, for some reason they remade it (in the same language) and called it "Tessa."

by Anonymousreply 82January 17, 2018 2:42 AM

Season 4 Rita was a different show, but still very very good. They explored Rita's past, which was interesting in that it was very relatable.

Young Rita is a dead ringer for Rita and she doesa great job.

The goofy teacher friend who followed her to a new school is okay as it relates to the story, but the Viking play and cosplay stuff aren't my bag.

It was an excellent season of inner growth for Rita, but I missed her kids. I guess, the point is, she does too. She is truly in a new life chapter.

by Anonymousreply 83January 17, 2018 12:03 PM

[quote]Ah, for some reason they remade it (in the same language) and called it "Tessa."

'Tessa' was the Dutch remake of the show, but it only lasted 1 season. It had Thekla Reuten in the lead, who's also been in some US movies

by Anonymousreply 84January 17, 2018 12:15 PM

That is baffling R84 and kind of offensive! Nobody can replace OG Rita. R69 I have to say the food on the show does not look appealing. One night she serves pasta to the family and they all put ketchup on it.

by Anonymousreply 85July 13, 2018 2:45 PM

I'm in the middle of season 3 right now. (I'm afraid to find out what happened to poor Kareem). I really like it too, although the constant ass close-up shots get tiring. What do you think of Helle? And why in GOD'S name wouldn't she have that carbuncle on her face removed??

by Anonymousreply 86July 13, 2018 2:54 PM

American version with Lena Headey coming to Showtime!

by Anonymousreply 87June 27, 2019 8:30 PM

EW Lena is not sexy at all.

by Anonymousreply 88June 27, 2019 8:51 PM

Hmmm. Well Lena will be better than dreadful Anna Gunn, who was attached to the last failed attempt to do a US version.

by Anonymousreply 89June 28, 2019 11:17 AM

R89 yes, Anna is just awful.

by Anonymousreply 90June 28, 2019 12:25 PM

Fifth and final season streamed on Netflix over the weekend. Featuring the return of sexy Carsten Bjornlund as Rasmus!

I enjoyed it overall but the first two seasons are still the best. It was nice that they were able to bring back most of the characters from the early seasons (and one of them comes out of the closet!). I wish they had cast a more appealing actor as Jeppe’s love interest.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 91August 17, 2020 6:18 AM

The actor who plays Jeppe also looks a bit like a young Henry Cavill:

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 92August 31, 2020 4:25 PM

Rita's painted on jeans get tiring. She never EVER wears anything else? And her shoes in the early seasons are absolutely intolerable.

by Anonymousreply 93August 31, 2020 4:48 PM

I hated Hjordis' boyfriend Ueffe. He was ugly and a slacker who did nothing all day. She deserved better. I liked how they were able to bring most of the cast together for the last scene.
