“The Vampire Diaries” Gets Its First Gay Character

The Vampire Diaries is one of the most homoerotic shows on basic television, but the supernatural series has never had an out gay character—until now. E! Online is reporting that when the show returns in 2014, the show’s cast include Luke, a gay teen of the handsome and sarcastic variety.

Oh great, another sassy gay character!

A new hottie is enrolling at Whitmore after winter break! And he’ll be spending time with Caroline! Except he’s so not into her in that way as Luke, handsome and sarcastic, is gay. And also happens to have a sister on campus, one that he will do [or sacrifice] anything to protect.

If Luke has to be the bitchy gay sidekick, we pray producers give him at least the hint of a sex life. I mean its bad enough we have to drool over Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder without any hope of a love connection.

Wow, a show that has even has a gay showrunner at the helm and he takes til halfway through the 5th season to finally have a character who is gay come through the show.

Is this supposed to be applauded?

by Anonymousreply 1December 28, 2013 2:20 PM

Isn't Ian Somerhalder's character, Damon Salvatore, crypto gay?

by Anonymousreply 2December 28, 2013 3:50 PM

Only five years after the hypocrite Kevin Williamson promised us we'd get one? HAH. Too little, too late. Don't care.

by Anonymousreply 3December 28, 2013 3:53 PM

Sassy gay character! How original! They should have made Tyler gay.

by Anonymousreply 4December 28, 2013 4:04 PM

There was so much homoeroticism in the first season. Most any of the male characters could have been made gay and it would have been realistic. There was so many guys on the show too, surely Kevin Williamson had one to spare? But no. Only when the show is nearly over does he have the guts to add one. Fucking pathetic hypocrite. He has an obligation to add gay characters and to add gay visibility on tv when he's gay himself. And his excuse was the most pathetic I've ever heard in my life "including a gay character needs to be organic". ORGANIC MY ASS. Just fucking admit it, you didn't have the balls to add a gay character when the show was actually popular, so you decide to add a minor, unimportant gay character when the show is almost finished. Nope. That's not ok. Too little too late. I'd rather he not add one at all if this is what we get. And he expects us to be happy with this? No, fuck that shit, and fuck him.

by Anonymousreply 5December 28, 2013 4:10 PM

A gay TV-character who's sexually active and/or has a love life? Forget it, as usual he'll be nothing more than a walking advice-column, fashion-adviser and one-liner delivery man for the ones who DO matter.

by Anonymousreply 6December 28, 2013 4:16 PM

Wasn't Caroline's father gay?

by Anonymousreply 7December 28, 2013 4:18 PM

Not arguing against the "too late" crowd, but Williamson hasn't been showrunner on TVD for ages - it's Julie Plec, and has been for at least the last two or three seasons.

by Anonymousreply 8December 28, 2013 4:21 PM

When I watched VD for its first couple of seasons I kept waiting vamps or actually practically anyone turning gay at any point. Now the same with The Originals which I still watch, even though it's not the most compelling entertainment. I'm liking the characters and the atmosphere of New Orleans. There is one gay character in The Originals, though, although he's pretty boring, just a minor vampire.

I keep wondering that is it because of Anne Rice's gay slut Lestat, and all of her other gay vamps plus the constantly sexy feeling in her books that make me think other vamp stuff should have that, too? She spoiled us.

by Anonymousreply 9December 31, 2013 9:13 PM

Binge-watched VD about 2 months ago, and for it not to have an openly gay character it is a very gay series. Honestly the show was made for 15yo girls and us gays.

And yes Anne Rice nailed this shit years ago.

by Anonymousreply 10December 31, 2013 9:19 PM

If only there'd be a kissing scene between this new character and Elena's brother, Jeremy. That would be HOT.

by Anonymousreply 11December 31, 2013 9:29 PM

Still waiting...

by Anonymousreply 12February 6, 2014 2:23 PM

Luke is supposed to make his appearance in the "Family Reunion" episode (Season 5, Episode 16), which is scheduled to be aired on March 20.

by Anonymousreply 13February 6, 2014 6:46 PM

Thanks.

But that seems a long wait... and only half-dozen episodes max that he'll be in this season. Hope he's not just a one-or-two episode character that appears and then is out. that would be lame.

by Anonymousreply 14February 6, 2014 10:53 PM

You can bet he's just another barely there gay, R14. Kevin Williamson is a fucking hypocrite. He doesn't mind showing two girls and a guy in a threesome, but he couldn't bother adding an actually gay character until the fifth season?! What's even worse is that he promised us a gay character back in season two, yet it never happened.. well.. not until now that is. NOW he adds a gay character, when the show is starting to go downhill, and he's got nothing to lose. He's a coward and a hypocrite. I can't believe Kevin Williamson, who is gay himself, doesn't have the balls to add a gay character until the middle of the fifth season. He's just like all other gay producers. He doesn't mind adding lesbians, because there's no risk involved, yet gay characters are apparently still too risky. Apparently he doesn't have any balls. And if you ask me it's too little, too late.

If anyone cares.. here's the guy who's playing the new gay character.

by Anonymousreply 15February 20, 2014 3:05 PM

Damn, R15. You nearly gave my dick a heart attack. I clicked on your link and thought you were talking about David Gandy. That would've been brilliant...and worth waiting for!

by Anonymousreply 16February 20, 2014 3:16 PM

Why does there have to be a gay character in every show?

by Anonymousreply 17February 20, 2014 3:19 PM

R17, because it's nice with some representation? Because we want to see someone we can recognize ourselves in? Because it helps normalizing being gay and shows straight people that there's nothing wrong with being gay, and help gay kids see that there's more people like them out there? Take your pick. There's a million reasons why. It's disgusting that you'd think otherwise. That's why lesbians have 10 times as many lesbian characters on tv right now (compared to gay male characters). They actually care.

by Anonymousreply 18February 20, 2014 3:34 PM

Well, he was finally introduced, but the only way we know he's gay is some snarky comment about him liking guys instead of girls.

He had very little do so.

At least he wasn't a mincing queen, but it does look like he'll be generally sexless.

And of course, it also looks like he'll likely just be killed off by the finale.

So... yay?

by Anonymousreply 19March 29, 2014 11:21 PM

He was somewhat cute, but not exactly hot.

I was hoping he'd put the moves on Jeremey.

by Anonymousreply 20March 30, 2014 2:20 AM

That show is still on?

by Anonymousreply 21March 30, 2014 3:49 AM

Yes, R21.

This is actually the first season that I'm starting to tire of it... mostly due to Doppleganger over-load, and the desire for Catherine to just DIE already.

But it is still chock full of beautiful male eye-candy, so I keep watching.

by Anonymousreply 22March 30, 2014 5:59 PM

Am I missing something or do CW shows have very few gay characters in them? It's actually quite sad considering many of their shows are targeted at younger people. One might even suspect a bit of an anti-gay agenda.

Kevin Williamson had the gay serial killers in the first season of The Following. Even if I hated them being psycho killers it was still great to have them. BTW, I've always thought (or probably wished) that Shawn Ashmore's character is gay but now he's flirting with Bacon's niece. What a shame.

by Anonymousreply 23March 30, 2014 6:09 PM

Very few r23 Josh on the originals,Nyssa al ghul on arrow, Luke on vampire diaries and Walt on the Carrie diaries are the only current lgbt characters on the CW.

by Anonymousreply 24March 30, 2014 6:34 PM

It only took what five years before this show gets what is essentially a completely token gay character?

by Anonymousreply 25March 31, 2014 1:46 AM

I suppose we're supposed to be happy with a token gay character that will disappear after a couple of episodes...

by Anonymousreply 26March 31, 2014 4:49 PM

Luke is the second gay character on VD the first being Caroline Forbes dad Bill Forbes.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 27April 1, 2014 8:26 PM

Huh. I guess it never registered that he was gay. I remember the character well.

by Anonymousreply 28April 1, 2014 9:04 PM

Wonder if he'll have more than four lines tonight...

by Anonymousreply 29April 3, 2014 4:10 PM

If the Producers think this will make up for hiring anti-gay actor Ian Somerhalder years ago, too little too late.

by Anonymousreply 30April 3, 2014 4:28 PM

The only reason we know he's gay is because he was introduced with some chick making a snide comment about him liking guys not girls.

If that's the extent of his sexuality, I don't think it counts at all.

by Anonymousreply 31April 3, 2014 5:03 PM

Supernatural has the Charlie character. She is a lesbian.

by Anonymousreply 32April 3, 2014 5:12 PM

R32, lesbians don't count.

by Anonymousreply 33April 3, 2014 6:41 PM

R31 That's almost the same thing that they did with Bill Forbes Caroline's dad by briefly mentioning that he left Caroline's mother when figured out he was gay and briefly mentioned having a boyfriend in another state who we never see at all.

by Anonymousreply 34April 3, 2014 7:54 PM

this show is over.

i'm like 6 episodes behind. i barely care about anyone.

i'm sick of all the doppledaggers.

annoying.

by Anonymousreply 35April 3, 2014 8:10 PM

After 5 seasons?! I thought Kevin Williamson promised us a gay character three seasons ago? Or was that just a lie too? What a motherfucking surprise.

Nop, not happy with this. Still boycotting this shitty show. Too little too late. What's the changes of him being yet another barely there asexual gay character or him getting killed off within a few episodes, or both?!

BTW, what's with all these gay producers refusing to add gay characters to their shows? Gay men seem to have a huge problem in this regard. Even when they do add gay characters they're a) lesbian or b) barely there and asexual (see Modern Family for asexual, or Teen Wolf for barely there).

by Anonymousreply 36April 3, 2014 8:18 PM

R32, so yet another show added a lesbian?! How many lesbians do we have on tv shows now, a billion?!

Lets number the lesbians on sci-fi shows, shall we? Once Upon A Time, Agents of SHIELD, Arrow, Supernatural.

Gays on sci-fi shows: -----------------

OOPS.

by Anonymousreply 37April 3, 2014 8:20 PM

Technically they did r36 with Bill Forbes in season 3

by Anonymousreply 38April 3, 2014 8:26 PM

Hannibal is "the" most homoerotic, however. I've been meaning to give this show a proper chance. Going to check it out.

by Anonymousreply 39April 3, 2014 8:31 PM

Sorry, mentioning the word "gay" in passing doesn't pass as a gay character. They wouldn't even count a character like that if the character was a lesbian. Because they actually have fully developed sexually active lesbian characters on tv.. while the gays have to be thankful for asexual, barely there gay characters. How exactly is that fair?

by Anonymousreply 40April 3, 2014 8:45 PM

Wait... no new episode last night? WHY NOT??

by Anonymousreply 41April 4, 2014 8:04 PM

Yeah, why the fuck was it a rerun last night? I was expecting a new episode!

by Anonymousreply 42April 5, 2014 3:40 AM

When is the next episode?

by Anonymousreply 43April 8, 2014 8:50 PM

... anyone? What's with the reruns?!?

by Anonymousreply 44April 9, 2014 1:04 AM

... hello? Nobody here watches this show any more??

by Anonymousreply 45April 9, 2014 2:29 PM

...Bueller?

by Anonymousreply 46April 10, 2014 11:02 PM

Next week r43

by Anonymousreply 47April 11, 2014 1:21 AM

Why so many repeats??

by Anonymousreply 48April 11, 2014 3:17 PM

this show is so horrible boring now

i'm not even watching next season

isn't there anyone else elena can date??? her only choice is damon or stefan.

jeremy is beyond hot.

by Anonymousreply 49April 20, 2014 7:29 AM

Yeah, Jeremy was cute when the show started but he's evolved into walking sex on a stick.

by Anonymousreply 50April 20, 2014 8:09 AM

why is this show always in close up?

by Anonymousreply 51April 20, 2014 8:24 AM

R37, Walking Dead finally introduced a gay character, at the end of season 4. It's a minor character, and of course, yet another lesbian.

by Anonymousreply 52April 20, 2014 8:36 AM

In my imagination, Vampires are fetid, deathly pale monstrosities who smell like mildew and spoiled fish and talk in lugubrious, mock-human monotone. They float outside your window and scratch at the glass with their long, dirty nails, waiting for you to succumb to your fear so you'll let them in. They are not your BF or BFF. Think 'Salem's Lot'.

by Anonymousreply 53April 20, 2014 10:45 AM

R52, thanks for the heads up. Make that a billion and one shows with lesbian characters now.

Tv shows with lesbian characters:

The Fosters, Parenthood, Arrow, Supernatural, The Vampire Diaries, Agents of SHIELD, Pretty little Liars, Grey's Anatomy, Orphan Black, Mistresses, Orange is the New Black, Lost Girl, Two and a half Men, Game of Thrones, True Blood, Glee, Chicago Fire, Under The Dome, Warehouse 13, Betrayal, The Crazy Ones, Degrassi, The Good Wife, American Horror Story, Venice, Wentworth, Super Fun Night, Jersey Strong, Once Upon A Time, Ravenswood, Masters of Sex, Last Tango in Halifax, Little Horribles, The Walking Dead, The Bridge, Faking It, Janet King, Beacon Hill, House of Cards, Defiance, Girls, Shameless, Twisted, Trauma, Call Me Midwife.

We currently have gay men on:

Game of Thrones, True Blood, Scandal, Vampire Diaries*, Shameless, Orphan Black*, Days of our Lives, General Hospital*, Faking It, Awkward, Modern Family*, Teen Wolf*, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Looking, Nashville*, The Carrie Diaries*, The Haves and Have Nots*, Revenge, Major Crimes*, Warehouse 13*

* = barely there gay character, celbate gay character, tv show is cancelled, or all of the former mentioned.

Do you guys see a difference here? There's at least three times as many lesbian characters as gay characters. In addition to the amount, there's also the fact that lesbian characters actually get to have a love life, unlike gay characters who are token and/or just there for laughs.

by Anonymousreply 54April 20, 2014 11:22 AM

Sorry, forgot about Glee on the gay side. But my point still stands.. there's a ton of lesbian characters right now, while we have a void of gays. I don't see it changing anytime soon though, considering that lesbians are more accepted in society.

by Anonymousreply 55April 20, 2014 11:24 AM

R54, your rating for "Teen Wolf" is a bit off, given the gay characters tend to be shown kissing almost as often as the straight characters, and there was one rather well done gay sex scene. So not exactly celibate. But yeah, frequently "barely there". And now the couple is broken up so we have yet to see what's going on next season with Danny (though they're introducing a new gay jock character). Honestly, it's one of the most gay male friendly shows on TV and deserves more credit than you're giving it.

by Anonymousreply 56April 21, 2014 2:52 PM

Is it just me, or is this so-called "First Gay Character" on Vampire Diaries the most "nearly non-existent" character ever? He's barely there, and if you didn't hear that ONE line someone said about him behind his back, nobody would ever have a clue he was gay.

by Anonymousreply 57May 2, 2014 3:08 AM

I guess nobody's watching

by Anonymousreply 58May 2, 2014 4:47 PM

... I guess not. Shame.

by Anonymousreply 59May 2, 2014 9:34 PM

If this is the only bone they're going to throw us, that's pathetic.

by Anonymousreply 60May 5, 2014 4:11 PM

This show is as apparently as popular on the datalounge as ... something really unpopular.

Seriously? With all the other shows that get discussion threads, this show gets NADA?

Really?

by Anonymousreply 61May 7, 2014 5:42 PM

There has to be more than two people here watching this show...

by Anonymousreply 62May 8, 2014 2:09 AM

*crickets*

by Anonymousreply 63May 8, 2014 6:54 PM

This show used to have a ton of threads...

Anyway, new episode starts now on the East Cost.

by Anonymousreply 64May 8, 2014 11:57 PM

I'm not watching unless the gay vampire wears nothing but D&G and bites its victims on the penis.

by Anonymousreply 65May 9, 2014 12:41 AM

Well, he's not a gay vampire, he's a gay witch or something, and he's had like a dozen lines, and a few minutes of screen time across four episodes so far.

by Anonymousreply 66May 9, 2014 12:47 AM

I'd be shocked if he survives the finale, to be honest.

by Anonymousreply 67May 9, 2014 6:59 PM

I'm seriously wondering that are there some homophobe executives working at CW who deliberately keep the gays off their shows. There's been absolutely minimum amount of gay characters on the network's shows which is funny since the shows are aimed mainly to teens and gay acceptance is petty high in that age group. One notable exception was Carrie Diaries but that was of course axed after two seasons.

by Anonymousreply 68May 9, 2014 7:06 PM

Season finale this week!

by Anonymousreply 69May 12, 2014 4:11 PM

FINALE TONIGHT!

by Anonymousreply 70May 15, 2014 8:22 PM

Most underwhelming new gay character ever.

Except for maybe Teen Wolf's new gay character.

Talk about 'token'...

by Anonymousreply 71August 14, 2014 7:17 PM

VD is back new tonight with Luke the gay witch

by Anonymousreply 72October 2, 2014 11:54 PM

Anyone think that Luke is cute?

by Anonymousreply 73October 10, 2014 12:00 AM

Yes, he's definitely cute. But ... his character is pretty much asexual.

by Anonymousreply 74October 10, 2014 12:14 AM

I wish that they give Luke a sex life unlike they did to Bill Forbes.

by Anonymousreply 75October 10, 2014 12:20 AM

Jeremey wandering around shirtless for half the episode was amazing.

Oh, and hey, the gay guy actually said another guy was hot, so that's the SECOND passive subtle indication that he's actually gay!

by Anonymousreply 76October 18, 2014 2:25 AM

TVD has a gay witch and TO has a gay vampire

by Anonymousreply 77October 18, 2014 4:21 AM

Jeremy has the most amazing nipples. He should be shirtless CONSTANTLY. By Law.

by Anonymousreply 78October 18, 2014 5:51 AM

What r78 said

by Anonymousreply 79October 18, 2014 7:11 AM

Yum!!

So is it just me, or does the "Vampire Diaries" new-season discussion thread not open?

by Anonymousreply 81October 18, 2014 3:03 PM

And now that gay character is dead.

That was the lamest gay character and plot ever.

by Anonymousreply 82January 30, 2015 1:04 AM

Luke is dead now...so dead, dead, dead now. And they replaced him with some psychotwink called Kai.

I'm kinda annoyed with this choice of actor to play this menacing villian part.

I would rather see this guy getting gang fucked by a bunch meth heads on a T.I.M set.

by Anonymousreply 83January 30, 2015 1:09 AM

********Spoiler Alert**********

Luke is now dead

by Anonymousreply 84January 30, 2015 1:13 AM

This series is a dump.

by Anonymousreply 85July 23, 2016 5:42 AM

Only one season left r85 then its over for good.

by Anonymousreply 86September 30, 2016 10:35 AM

Bitch got killed off right off the bat. Fuck that noise. Supposedly vamper Josh is gonna get another bf on the originals.

by Anonymousreply 87September 30, 2016 2:29 PM

I bailed on this show last season. Not watching this season. It went on two seasons too long.

And yeah, the 'gay character' thing was a total joke.

by Anonymousreply 88September 30, 2016 2:49 PM

That SJW was going NUTS in this thread.

by Anonymousreply 89September 30, 2016 3:10 PM
