Fess up. Who here plays video games? Which ones?

Would someone make a mint coming up with a gay combat/action game?

by Anonymousreply 472June 12, 2018 2:08 AM

Lots of games let you be gay ... have same-sex romances and attractions (Mass Effect 3 for one... Dragon Age 2 for another)

My favorite games over the last few years:

Fallout 3

Borderlands

Borderlands 2

Skyrim

FarCry 2

FarCry 3

F.E.A.R. 3

Portal

Portal 2

...well THIS thread didn't get very far.

I'm in the midst of playing Skyrim (halfway through). My character just married another man (Vilkas of the Companions).

Next up: GTA V.

by Anonymousreply 3December 25, 2013 4:50 AM

I play lots of games, though I haven't much lately. My favorites this year were GTA V and XCOM Enemy Within (with the add on).

by Anonymousreply 4December 25, 2013 4:54 AM

Sure, I play. I liked Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Far Cry 3, Bioshock Infinite, The Walking Dead, Alan Wake, Amnesia I and II, Spec Ops: The Line.

by Anonymousreply 5December 25, 2013 6:18 AM

I play minecraft, broken sword and walking dead. A lot of games these days don't have much stubstance to them, all about killing, with no story

by Anonymousreply 6December 25, 2013 6:46 AM

I'm not the biggest gamer but I've tried to play some games lately on my PS3 after a few years break.

At the moment I'm still recovering from the Mass Effect trilogy that I finished about two months ago. It was pretty awesome series. Of course I played the last part as gay Shepard and had the beautiful Canadian beefcake Kaidan as my man. The ending was so sad that I haven't had strength to start any other big game yet.

Before that I finished Dishonored which was really nice. Great atmosphere. I've tried to start the Assassin's Creed series but haven't managed to get into it.

On my pc I still play from time to time short games in Unreal Tournament 3, which is practically ancient game already. It's usually for procastination purposes but it does give you a nice adrenalin rush when you just need to unwind a bit.

At some point I'll buy PS4 because the graphics seem awesome. But because there aren't that many games to it yet I'm in no hurry.

by Anonymousreply 7December 25, 2013 6:53 AM

Skyrim, and Crusader Kings II mostly, finished the first Walking Dead game, haven't started the new one yet.

by Anonymousreply 8December 25, 2013 7:01 AM

Oh yea, and now that you mentioned it, I just played the first episode of the second season of the Walking Dead game a week or so ago and it was very good. If you like the Walking Dead game check out The Wolf Among Us. It's from the same developer and is the same type of gameplay but a different story. I loved it.

by Anonymousreply 9December 25, 2013 7:13 AM

The "Blood Dragon" DLC for Far Cry 3 (same engine, completely different story that is a spoof on 80's video games) is really fun.

If you played Far Cry 3, be sure to download "Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon" ... it's a hoot. Same basic game-play mechanics as Far Cry 3 with most of the extraneous stuff stripped out. It's lots of fun, and the finale is hilarious!

by Anonymousreply 11December 26, 2013 4:30 AM

Just finished Batman Arkham City and Young Justice. Currently playing Assassin's Creed Black Flag.

I've never had aproblem admitting I play video games. FTW

by Anonymousreply 12December 26, 2013 4:30 PM

Civilization V.

And I sheepishly admit to playing World of Warcraft.

by Anonymousreply 13December 26, 2013 4:41 PM

Not much time for it these days, but my top choices of the year are Beyond: Two Souls and The Last of Us, although the latter made me really uncomfortable when, as you play further into the game, you slowly learn that the game's protagonist is actually kind of a sociopath.

But it did manage one of the freshest takes on the well-trodden zombie apocalypse genre, was beautiful looking. I'm also looking forward to The Walking Dead Season 2, although I haven't picked it up yet.

Also two indie games: Gone Home, a kind of throwback to the adventure games of the mid-90s, where a college student arrives home from a year studying in Europe to find her family missing, and she has to unravel the mystery of what happened. And Papers, Please, a retro game where you play a customs agent at a border crossing at a USSR-like country in the early 80s and have to increasingly weigh your own conscience against the ever-increasing police state, coupled with the fact that you desperately need the job to support for family.

If you haven't, pick up the Citadel DLC for ME3. It's just a delightful, fun Ocean's 11 kind of send-up that mostly exists to add some levity into a game that was really heavy on the dark and depressing.

It was just a wonderful way to say goodbye to all those characters and was often laugh-out-loud funny.

Of course, I'd be lying if said that parts of ME3 didn't make me cry like a big old Mary.

"The answer to your question is 'Yes.'"

by Anonymousreply 16December 26, 2013 9:45 PM

R15, I'll probably play the whole Mass Effect-trilogy through again at some point and then buy all the extra parts to it, too. I've seen the Kaidan/Shepard videos from Citadel DLC and it looks like fun.

The problem with games like Mass Effect is that playing them takes huge amount of time. I spent something like 120-150 hours on the whole trilogy, and even then I probably missed lot of small missions. Although I must admit that I had played ME3 for something like 30 hours when I found out from the web that Shepard can have relationship with Kaidan. I had killed Kaidan in the ME1 and had brought in the careers from ME1 and ME2 so I had to ditch all that and start ME3 from the beginning as a complete newbie. Just to get Kaidan and Shep together ;) I felt like I was mad when I did it but I just had to have Kaidan for my Shep. It was worth it.

Of course gay relationships are just icing on the cake in the whole Mass Effect thing, but they do bring solace to the bleekness of the story. I fell into a week long depression after finishing ME3 but I still want to return there at some point.

One of my college friends is married to a BioWare employee, and they had intended to have the Male-Shep/Kaidan romance option available from the first game, but that Electronic Arts got cold feet and made them drop it. There is still dialog and audio files available in the PC version of the game.

At one point, Kaidan makes some comment about serving under Shepard, and Shepard comes back with a line like "Alenko, I don't recall you ever serving UNDER me."

Although as much as I like the male/male relationship, it's more the evolution of Tricia Helfer's EDI over ME2 and ME3 that touches me the most.

Well, that and the Geth and Quarians making peace.

by Anonymousreply 18December 27, 2013 9:17 PM

It's great Bioware managed to bring in the gay stuff in full force in ME3, but unfortunately EA was right about many people not liking it even then a few years later. Reading those anti-gay messages from ME-fans when ME3 came out made me wonder what game had they've been playing since ME trilogy is all about understanding difference and variety in life forms and working together with them to fight the evil. But maybe for some men we gays are the Reapers.

I've watched the ME1 gay mod videos from Youtube and if I remember correctly all the romance points I had as male Shep with Ashley were also available as gay relationship with Kaidan. So Bioware went there from the beginning and good for them. I view EA as a soulless corporation who only think of money anyway so I just take ME3's gay romance as a good thing from them, although yes of course they should've allowed it in the ME1 already.

I sincerely hope ME4 will have the gay romance option as one of the normal options like ME3 had. Apparently the development has changed from Bioware Edmonton to Bioware Montreal so we'll see how that goes. ME4 is still at least a year away and it's still very unclear in what time frame it will take place, but apparently it's clear that Shepard won't be in it. Personally I wish that it'd happen after ME3.

BTW, I didn't manage the peace between Quarians and Geth, and I ended up destroying the Geth, since I couldn't trust them. I liked EDI in ME3 but I have trouble forming emotional attachments with A.I. characters, even if they are just part of a story. And that's the biggest reason also why I destroyed the Geth.

by Anonymousreply 19December 29, 2013 2:11 AM

Oh hell, how could I forget: the reason I even bought Mass Effect was that I played Deus Ex: Human Revolution on PS3 past spring and wanted to return to that kind of futuristic world with cyborgs and violence.

I remembered Deus Ex when I stumbled upon this interview from 3killabytes with the voice actors Adam Jensen of Deus Ex and Shepard from ME. Jesus that Adam Jensen voice Elias Toufexis has sexy voice. No wonder I loved Deus Ex and kept checking out Jensen's bulge all the time ;)

I just can't help but be moved by it. It's just some of the best voice acting that Jennifer Hale, Liz Sroka, and DC Douglas did, especially Hale.

There's also the scene where EDI talks about seeing footage of humans in Reaper concentration camps helping each other, realizing that she's nothing like the Reapers, is actually repulsed by them, that she'd rather die than let someone hurt Joker, it hits a very particular spot for me: characters figuring out what it means to be human.

I actually liked Legion quite a lot. Him saying 'Shepard Commander' was always somehow very sweet. But to me A.I. is still not a living thing when compared to organic life forms. I don't know where this comes from, maybe from some childhood memory of evil K.I.T.T. or some other show or film or book. Maybe it's just some primitive sense of knowing that 'this thing is not real'.

The closest ones I've felt to be almost humans were replicants from Blade Runner and the little kid from Spielberg's A.I. The ending in A.I. where the aliens/evolved humans/A.I.'s (whatever they were) found the kid frozen and gave him the last day with his mom was heart breaking. Even though I knew that the kid's feelings were programmed into his software I still felt like he deserved that before he was turned off. And of course that probably was Spielberg's (and originally Kubrick's) intention: to show humanity in man created machines.

These things will be important in the future when highly developed A.I.'s and robots will become reality. Digitally created actors will also be reality in films pretty soon. I was interested in creating digital actors when I was studying in university and wrote a bachelor's thesis about it. It will be interesting to see how well general public will receive them, and will they have the ability to become stars the way we have human stars nowadays. One of the reasons I'm so into star gossip.

It just actually came to my mind, after having been deep into Supernatural these past couple of weeks due to Netflix, that the situation will be a bit like with Supernatural's Destiel pairing where fans have created this relationship with two fictional characters. Destiel is reality to many people but from the makers' point of view it might not even exist. Maybe artificially created actors will live in the reality the same way Destiel does. And for that matter the real actors behind Destiel: Jensen Ackles who is rumoured to be gay in real life, and even having a relationship with Jared Padalecki or even with the angel himself Misha Collins. We don't really know what stars are like in reality, and all the gossip about them partly tries to humanize them.

It will be fun to see how far film and game studios will go in creating lives for their digital actors, because that will be close to humanizing A.I. It probably will be more on the level of Destiel rather than human actor gossip. And yeah, I'm rambling here. I haven't thought about these things logically for a long time.

by Anonymousreply 28December 29, 2013 6:59 PM

I loved Diablo II. I played through it and all the expansion several times in fact.

I couldn't make it even halfway through Diablo III. It was so boring. They ruined the leveling/class/abilities/skills tree, and changed the fun looting system into an annoying auction house crap, where you have to spend real money to get anything decent, because all the monsters drop crap.

The only thing more disappointing that Diablo III, was SimCity online.

by Anonymousreply 32December 31, 2013 6:12 AM

(rolling eyes at R32)

Tediously ignorant fools like R32 annoy me. In spite of all the data that video games are played by adults, and the average age of gamers is in the 30s, this tool comes in with his stupid "what are you, 12?" crap...

It's entertainment. Like watching movies only more interactive. Or playing poker with your friends. Jesus.

Grow up yourself... you and your childish taunts.

I'm not telling anyone what they should or shouldn't enjoy playing, but I'm only going to point out that "The Wolf Among Us" is based on the comic book Fables by Bill Willingham who is a neocon asshole.

While he doesn't seem to work directly for things the way Orson Scott Card does, I try to avoid his work for similar reasons.

Read the comic, play the game and enjoy them if you'd like, but that's where some of your money is going.

I'm currently working through the backlog I built op over the year - right now I'm playing Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen, which is a great action-WRPG, sorta like Skyrim but with really fun combat. It also lets you have same-sex relationships, though the system isn't that well-developed and the plot isn't very fleshed out.

Also a big fan of the Mass Effect trilogy and Dragon Age: Origins - someday I'll go back and play through them with all the DLC. And of course I had my male Shepard in Mass Effect end up with Kaidan.

But yeah, if I want to take a break from 50-100 hour epics, I have a Wii U and 3DS for lighter fare - the new Mario 3D World is great, as is the new Zelda on the 3DS.

by Anonymousreply 35December 31, 2013 2:23 PM

Playing Assassin Creed IV on PS4 - it's a great pirate game and you don't need to know the assassin's creed series. Beautifully rendered and some characters are hot.

Also downloaded the retro cold war "Papers, Please" to see what all the fuss was about. The gameplay is good but it gets tedious and can't see myself playing many more times to see all 20 endings.

In the queue: The Last of Us, Knack for PS4, Tearaway for Vita, amongst others.

by Anonymousreply 36January 2, 2014 2:13 AM

"Dishonored" is really hard. I'm dying a lot.

by Anonymousreply 37January 2, 2014 3:26 AM

I actually just bought ME3 and DA2 because I found out you can have gay relationships in them, haha.

by Anonymousreply 38January 2, 2014 3:32 AM

Just found Bully: Scholarship Edition over my Christmas break. Loved it. Hope Rockstar makes Bully 2. Wish I could have done more than just kiss the other boarding school boys!

by Anonymousreply 39January 2, 2014 4:23 AM

R38, if you play DA2 on the PC, look up and download some game mods online, because DA2 has a lot of issues (with gameplay, story, graphics, etc.) - it was kind of a step down from the original Dragon Age: Origins, which is one of my favorite PC RPG's ever. As a side note, you could have your male character romance a guy in DA:O as well (a bisexual elf), but a lot of players, including myself, just used a mod so you could romance the hunky knight character in your party instead.

That's why I almost always prefer games on PC over consoles, because besides the options for better graphics and performance, for a lot of games I know there'll be a large community of modders who'll make improvements or fun additions / revisions, which can help improve the experience dramatically.

by Anonymousreply 40January 2, 2014 5:01 AM

I believe EA didn't own bioware when ME1 came out so the cut content is all on bioware.

by Anonymousreply 41January 2, 2014 5:41 PM
I believe EA didn't own bioware when ME1 came out so the cut content is all on bioware.

They were still the publisher, though. As the publisher, they were the ones writing the checks.

And after Fox News raised some faux hysteria about the sexuality in ME1, they had to dial the sexuality--even the hetero--down a lot in ME2.

by Anonymousreply 42January 2, 2014 7:44 PM

That's true EA was the publisher when the game was ported over to PC. But ME was originally published by MS exclusively for XBOX. Great game either way and Bioware still made it possible to have same sex relations in game via a mod.

I'm currently 45% finished on GTA IV, and am *not* impressed with most of it.

Imo, all three GTA III's are among the best games ever, but GTA IV has so many dull and annoying flaws that I'm finishing it more out of spite than desire.

I sure hope GTA V is a lot better!

by Anonymousreply 47January 16, 2014 12:17 PM

Currently playing Assassins Creed V, the abewdule add-on and the new one with Aveline.

I love freeing slaves and killing the hell out of their masters with my machete.

by Anonymousreply 48January 16, 2014 12:50 PM

GTA V is better than GTA IV in absolutely every way! It is a must have game, even if only to mess around in. I could only manage to get 40% done with GTA IV before I finally said, "Fuck it!" I hated how if you lost a mission you were forced to drive ALLLLLL the way back to the starting point--and in those vehicles that were a pain in the ass to control. GTA V fixed all that mess & I couldn't put it down...most fun I've had playing a video game in a LONG time. Now when I go back and look at GTA IV, it looks like absolute shit!

R50 I'm sure you don't watch TV either, right? Since it too would be a huge waste of precious time and all.

by Anonymousreply 54January 17, 2014 6:27 PM

R50, sure games could be waste of time if you're not getting what you want from the them. I spent something like 150 hours playing Mass Effect trilogy, but in the end it gave me one of the most touching experiences a piece of entertainment has given me.

Also to me they are partly escapism but they also satisfy other needs like getting new experiences, enjoying beautiful graphics and great stories, having roller-coaster like rides in various ways etc. Certain games are almost like movies where you are inside as a character.

But virtual life poses certain risks and you can certainly lose touch of reality if you try to hide from it by playing too much. Then again who can say what kind of living is supposedly the right kind. To me game worlds are just places I visit and the feelings what I feel there are not really as deep as with interacting with living persons.

With A.I.'s developing rapidly all of us here might in only a few years have a chance to have completely artificial friends and artifial lives that go much deeper than Second Life or such worlds. Virtual reality sounds like an ancient term but for many of us life will be lived mostly there in the future. Games are part of that world and they are here now.

by Anonymousreply 60January 17, 2014 8:29 PM

Dishonored is very much in the style of Splinter Cell, but with the weird supernatural powers. I liked it a lot.

I love the Halo games if I'm in the mood for a FPS, and a lot of the Star Wars games were great. The Batman Arkham games are awesome but I get tired of beating up thugs. Not really into button mashing. The Lego games are a hoot.

BTW did you notice that Susan Sarandon was the voice of Granny Rags? I didn't recognize during the game any famous names but now that I read the voice actor list there were people like Lena Headey, Carrie Fisher, John Slattery, Brad Dourif, Michael Madsen and Chloe Moretz in the cast.

by Anonymousreply 69January 31, 2014 2:15 PM

Wow, R67... I had no idea.

I just finished both of the story DLCs (Knife of Dunwall and Brigmore Witches)... they were spectacular. They were as good if not better than the base game itself.

I have to highly recommend "Dishonored" and its DLCs, which is interesting because I actually started this game last summer, and couldn't get into it.

I got bored over Christmas Break though and decided to give it another chance, and am I glad I did.

I'm slightly intrigued about Titanfall because it's been said to be the biggest selling point of Xbox One. Beta for Xbox has been open for a day and I was wondering if anyone here has played it? PC beta has apparently just gone live.

by Anonymousreply 71February 17, 2014 3:15 AM

TitanFall looks amazing... but it's a multi-player only. Six on Six Player-vs-Player.

I hate that. I don't like playing with complete strangers. I want a single player campaign, and maybe a 2-player co-op version. I hate PvP.

So as awesome as this looks to me -- if it were a normal shooter -- I'll probably not ever play it.

I was planning to get an Xbox One just for this game until I found out it was multi-player only.

by Anonymousreply 72February 17, 2014 3:19 AM

Oh damn, I had forgotten about the whole multi-player thing. I always play alone.

When I quickly googled about it the reasons to ditch the single player campaign are developer's small resourcers and that "people rarely finish single player campaigns". Hmmm. Someone said in comments that they'll probably sell single player DLC at some point. Who knows. Anyway that certainly makes me not rush out and buy Xbox One.

by Anonymousreply 73February 17, 2014 3:34 AM

Anyone else here get the play The Elder Scrolls Online beta?

It was interesting. I'm not really into MMO gaming, particularly subscription-based ones, but it was actually a lot better than I expected. Could be the better than Skyrim, tell will tell.

by Anonymousreply 74February 17, 2014 3:44 AM

Played ESO over the beta weekend with my partner. Lots of bugs but loved Skyrim so will likely buy this too.

The idea of a subscription-to-play MMO really turns me off.

I was so hoping for Elder Scrolls VI.

I'm a single-player kind of guy, mostly.

by Anonymousreply 76February 17, 2014 4:25 PM

If you have an Xbox 360, there's a single day and "this week only" sale going on... see the link for more details.

But you can pick up some games (like "Dishonored" mentioned above) for pretty cheap:

Batman: Arkham City for only $4.99? I'm in...

Some games for only a dollar.

If you have an Xbox, you might want to check out the sale...

World of Warcraft. My realm, Moon Guard, has a healthy LGBT presence.

by Anonymousreply 79February 19, 2014 3:56 AM

Anyone ever play Secret World? It looked really interesting but I've always played single player, how exactly does the group player thing work?

by Anonymousreply 80February 19, 2014 11:39 AM

I just joined Playstation Plus for 3 months to try the free games. I'm in Europe and the free big ones for February are Bioshock Infinite and Metro Last Light. I'm downloading Bioshock Infinite now and will try it out later. It looks pretty as hell.

by Anonymousreply 81February 19, 2014 8:42 PM

I'm currently playing Bioshock Infinite...the atmosphere & sound design are beautiful, but I'm not finding myself having ANY fun. I keep having to force myself to play the game. Not sure what all the hype's about.

by Anonymousreply 82February 20, 2014 11:08 AM

R82, I had the same issue with the original BioShock. I even started playing again from the beginning a year or two later after quitting some ways in...

And I ended up stopping about the same place. It was beautiful, creepy, atmospheric... and not any fun.

Now Far Cry 2 & 3 were fun. Skyrim was fun. Borderlands and Borderlands 2 were fun (even more fun with friends).

by Anonymousreply 83February 20, 2014 1:24 PM

I must admit that I had a bit similar experience with some Bioshock-version demo a few years back. I downloaded it and tried to play it for a while but lost interest pretty quickly. I decided to try again with Infinite because I just wanted to play something.

I've played a couple of hours maybe at the moment and so far I'm enjoying it but it's no way anything spectacular. Beautiful though. I'm also not loving games that use Unreal game engine on PS3 because I hate the flickering edges that come from antialiasing problems.

But I'm at this point still optimistic. The skyworld (or whatever it's called) is nice enough to escape to from shitty reality.

by Anonymousreply 84February 20, 2014 8:27 PM

I am watching the best classic Atari and Calico games on Youtube. I also watch game plays for Commodore 64 games, Super NES games, and pretty much every gaming system available.

I am jealous of the guy who owns 8 thousand games I watch.

by Anonymousreply 85February 20, 2014 8:37 PM

It's too bad Google isn't allowing gameplay footage of newer games to be uploaded anymore...that's how I always determined which games I was going to purchase. These game companies are shooting themselves in the feet with that stupid fucking rule.

by Anonymousreply 86February 20, 2014 10:34 PM

Anyone here going to play Elder Scrolls Online or Sims 4?

by Anonymousreply 87February 22, 2014 7:20 PM

I'm not into online only, multiplayer only, games, and especially not ones that require a monthly subscription to play.

by Anonymousreply 88February 22, 2014 7:26 PM

The next TESO beta opens today. Anyone else invited to it? Anyone want an invite? Looks as though they want as many people in as possible over the weekend.

I'm fine with playing the beta, really doubt I'd pay to play after this though.

by Anonymousreply 89February 28, 2014 1:18 PM

Does no one here play Guild Wars 2.

I was a WOW player for a long time, but got tired of the dungeon dungeon dungeon - I MUST HAVE BETTER GEAR grind.

I enjoy GW2 a lot. I really like that you don't have a lot of add-ons for the game.

I played the Elder Scrolls Beta and was really unimpressed. The graphics were bad. I felt like I was playing a game from the 90s.

In GW2, there is quite a lot of gay plot line. Mainly lesbian.

I always thought Blood Elves in WOW were gay - they certainly made them seem that way.

by Anonymousreply 90February 28, 2014 1:38 PM

Playstation 4 vs. XBOX One?

Which one is better? I know nothing about gaming. I just want to play some games and have some fun and don't know where to start.

by Anonymousreply 91February 28, 2014 2:24 PM

Xbox One for graphics. I think PS4 has more games. Nintendo (the gaming system organization) for best graphics of all three systems. Nintendo products always have the best graphics.

I would go with Xbox and/or Nintendo, or buy both at the same time.

by Anonymousreply 92February 28, 2014 4:57 PM

R92 hasn't a fucking clue what he/she is talking about. PS4 is not only cheaper than the Xbox One, it is more powerful and therefore able to produce better (and higher resolution) graphics. Nintendo comes in dead last this generation, unfortunately.

by Anonymousreply 93February 28, 2014 5:19 PM

Sims, GTA, Racing MMORPGs, WWE wrestling games (and old WCW ones, I still have my N64), Madden, various NBA basketball games. I play on Playstation, PC, Kindle, and N64.

I also like Wii, though, I don't have one. Super fun.

by Anonymousreply 94February 28, 2014 6:00 PM

PS4 is marginally faster & more powerful than the Xbox One, but the end result isn't really that significant looks-wise. Side-by-side, it's generally hard to tell them apart. Especially from the distance most people view their TVs at.

PS4 fanboys will make more of this than is there. Xbox One fanboys will make less of it than there is.

There IS a difference between native HD (1080p) and native 900 or 720p scaled up to 1080p (which the Xbox has to do for many games, to keep the same frame-rates as the PS4). But seriously, when you see them side by side, it doesn't affect gameplay.

Differences in the controllers matter a lot more (I prefer the Xbox One versions, but the PS4 is vastly improved over the PS3, so PS people are really going to be happy).

The main difference is that the Xbox One is a lot more than "just" a game console. It can control your cable box, and has built in voice commands, and can connect easily via smart-glass to your phone or tablet (for second-screen or better controls... for instance, typing via controller sucks, so just whip out your smart-glass app and type away).

Xbox also has a superior multi-user experience, though the PS4's experience is significantly better than PS3 now.

PS4 doesnt' require an extra subscription to do things like watch Netflix. And it's $100 cheaper.

There are trade-offs and pluses-and-minuses for each platform.

If you want a more centralized living room media experience and don't mind paying for "Xbox Live Gold", go with Xbox.

If you're just into gaming, go with PS4.

Or better yet, look where your favorite games are (each platform has some exclusives) and go where the games take you.

I'm looking forward to South Park "The Stick of Truth"

by Anonymousreply 96March 1, 2014 7:23 PM

I just finished playing Bioshock Infinite. What a load of crap the story was. Seemingly deep (at least in the end of the game) but just empty inside. I thought about quitting playing many times but decided that I have to finish it.

Like R82 said the game was not fun at all. There was enough fighting and action to keep some sort of interest in playing but the visuals got boring pretty quickly. The steampunk pastel colored world and the 20's music were in a way nice. You can't deny the hard work studio has put in creating them but it all just falls apart with the lousy storytelling. I was many times wondering while playing the game how badly the emotional connection has been handled. I couldn't have cared less about any of the characters in the game. The big emotions voice actors gave just made it all seem more fake. The end "surprise" was that probably only to some teenage boys but of course those guys are more likely the target audience.

While playing I started to question that did I really like Dishonored and Deus Ex Human Revolution or was I just imagining enjoying them. But no, those games were written much better.

I googled quickly the situation and apparently Irrational Games made this game for six years. It apparently sold 4 million copies but possibly that wasn't good enough and the studio is being closed down while the studio head (and the lead writer of Infinite) will start a smaller thing inside another studio. He wants to focus on the "narrative driven games"... well I must try to avoid them if they are as horrible as Infinite. Of course I have to point out that many gamers thought the story was the best thing about Infinite. Well, it just wasn't that to me.

by Anonymousreply 97March 12, 2014 12:23 PM

I'm playing "South Park: The Stick of Truth" right now... I have to say, it's pretty fun, and pretty hilarious. But I think you have to like (or at least watch) the show to really have a lot of fun with it.

by Anonymousreply 98March 16, 2014 1:36 AM

OMG, South Park: The Stick of Truth is so fucking hilarious. Tons of fun. And so sick and twisted!

by Anonymousreply 99March 24, 2014 6:30 AM

If you're not a fan of the show, South Park is probably not going to be your cup of tea.

But if you've seen most of the episodes and find it generally funny, then you'll love it.

by Anonymousreply 100March 24, 2014 5:09 PM

Yea, but…it's an RPG.

by Anonymousreply 101March 24, 2014 7:12 PM

It's like an episode of the game. I normally hate turn-based combat, but I love it here. I'm normally not an RPG type, but I'm having so much fun in this game, just because it's so silly, ridiculous, sick&twisted, and just plain hilarious.

If you hate the show or have never watched it, then I can't imagine you enjoying it to be honest. Much of the fun and humor is reference-based.

by Anonymousreply 102March 24, 2014 8:32 PM

I tried to get into couple of Playstation Plus freebies, Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception and Tomb Raider. I just didn't feel either clicked with me so I bought Dragon Age Origins and started playing it yesterday (it's only a bit over 6 € at Playstation Store).

So now I'm an Elf Mage and so far I like the atmosphere. I'm waiting to meet the dude who's to become my gay partner ;) Too bad the Grey Warden from the beginning is not available for gay romance because he was hot as hell.

The fighting is done pretty stupidly, and I remember reading people complain about it. Now I understand why. Thankfully the atmosphere and the story feel right to me so I won't let that bother me.

by Anonymousreply 103April 2, 2014 2:54 PM

R103, DA:O is one of my favorites - yeah, the combat is a bit slow if you're used to more action-oriented games, but customizing and building up your character's skill set is pretty fun. I actually think it might be more fun to play as a rogue on consoles, since that's a bit more of an action-oriented class that focuses on close combat and backstabs - as a mage you usually want to play tactically from a distance. But mages end up being the most over-powered class, especially with spell combos.

I also prefer the PC version because there are so many mods available for it - you can improve combat mechanics, change characters' appearances and costumes, even have a gay romance with your knight companion from the beginning.

by Anonymousreply 104April 2, 2014 3:09 PM

Thanks for the info R104. I'm not the biggest player in the world and don't really keep up with the gaming world unless to check out some cool trailers for the new games so I usually just jump right in to a game without reading about it beforehand. Sometimes it's better to know something before but at the same time I feel it's ruining the experience of finding new things. I picked Elf Mage just because it felt right pick for me personally. I guess I should've thought about it more but I do like being a warlock so it's all good in the end.

Problem with these huge games is that with the wrong choices you might end up losing tens of hours of gameplay if you later find out you should've done something different. Happened with me during Mass Effect 3 when I found in the middle of the game from the net that you could have Kaidan as a love interest for Shepard. I had to start the whole fucking game over from the beginning and lose all the history my Shepard had brought in from 1 & 2. Just to have Kaidan whom I had killed in ME1. I cried about it in some earlier post here.

At least I now checked before starting to play DA:O who are my possible gay love interests to know I really end up shagging him.

I've always enjoyed playing with PC games like Unreal Tournament but I try to play only with PS3 when home so I'm stuck with it.

by Anonymousreply 105April 3, 2014 2:58 PM

R103 / R105, the great thing about DA:O is that there's pretty much no "wrong" way to play it - it's a game that's built on replay value and experimenting, since there are six possible origins / storylines to choose from, and each will have slight differences in how the quests will play out and the plot options available to you. Each origin and each of the classes have their own unique benefits and drawbacks - I like playing as a mage because it gives you a lot of control over the battlefield, but I've also done another play-through as a rogue and had a lot of fun with how fast the combat was.

Most people don't have the time to invest in multiple play-throughs, but it's a great game regardless of which origin / class you choose. I will say, if you're playing a mage, that "Cone of Cold" is possibly the most broken spell in the game, and you can get it really early - just freeze batches of enemies and shatter them with Stone Fist, Crushing Prison, or a critical strike. Or even better, use "Walking Bomb" on them before you shatter them, and they'll destroy everything surrounding them. Again, a really fun class to play.

by Anonymousreply 106April 3, 2014 3:14 PM

TitanFall is out for Xbox 360 today, for those that wanted to play, but didn't want to buy an Xbox One to do so...

by Anonymousreply 107April 8, 2014 9:24 PM

NEW BORDERLAND GAME ANNOUNCED!! WOO!! To be released this fall (or at least before the end of the year)

by Anonymousreply 108April 11, 2014 3:18 PM

I play vintage games on MAME.

It's so weird that games I would save up money for as a kid are now readily available at a whim.

I love the innocence and charm of the old titles:

Mr. Do

Donkey Kong

Pepper II

Mappy

Xevious et al.

by Anonymousreply 109April 11, 2014 3:25 PM

I always vowed that if I ever had a son, I'd name him Xevious. I LOVE that name. Unfortunately, I hate kids.

by Anonymousreply 110April 11, 2014 3:27 PM

R109, my favorites of that era are Tempest, Centipede, Millipede, Robotron 2084, and Super Ms Pac Gal (aka modified Ms PacMan).

by Anonymousreply 111April 11, 2014 3:29 PM

Hate shooters. Into adventure or puzzle games like Syberia, Machinarium, The Cave, Monkey Island Adventures, The Room.

by Anonymousreply 112April 11, 2014 3:32 PM

R110.

Who needs the kid?

Just get a puppy, kitten or iguana and call it "Xevious".

by Anonymousreply 113April 11, 2014 3:39 PM

R109.

My old college roomate had a full size Centipede game in our shared apartment...it was a nightmare to move in and out but was fun to have around. Unfortunately, I never got any better at it.

by Anonymousreply 114April 11, 2014 3:45 PM

I've always wanted a version of "Sinistar", but I can never find it. I feel like I'm the only person who loved that game.

by Anonymousreply 115April 11, 2014 5:26 PM

Dark Souls 2..best game I've played in a long time, and the co op is greatly improved over the first one. I did not want it to end.

by Anonymousreply 116April 11, 2014 5:37 PM

R116, tell me more about the co-op?

And have you played "Dishonored"?

by Anonymousreply 117April 11, 2014 5:39 PM

What would you like to know? You can summon other players to help you clear areas and beat bosses, or be summoned and help them. If it's the latter you get items and souls for helping so you can buy stuff or level up your character. There is also player vs player and covenants you can join that utilize the multiplayer in different ways.

I though Dishonored was okay. Fun, but nothing I'd really go back to and play again.

by Anonymousreply 118April 11, 2014 5:47 PM

I'm looking for games with good co-op play (like Borderlands) that I can play with one of my friends. Such games seem very few and far-between. We don't want to play PvP against anyone else. We just want to play a game together, against/with the computer.

Borderlands is amazing. Very few other games seem to have anything even close. Games like Far Cry 3 have separate "co-op levels" that are OK, but it's not PART of the game. It's like some separate tacked on thing that is rarely as good as the game itself, and usually pretty short.

by Anonymousreply 119April 11, 2014 5:50 PM

I play with myself.

by Anonymousreply 120April 11, 2014 8:10 PM

bump!

by Anonymousreply 121April 23, 2014 12:10 AM

Anyone load up on the $.99 PSN games this weekend? I've been having a blast with Super Stardust HD. That game makes me sweat.

by Anonymousreply 122April 23, 2014 5:52 AM

TWO new Borderlands games coming out this year! One RPG/Story game, and one shooter based on the Borderlands 2 engine, but a "prequel" to Borderlands 2 (taking place between the first and second games).

I'm so excited I can hardly wash.

by Anonymousreply 123May 5, 2014 9:18 PM

Wolfenstein The New Order comes out this month!

by Anonymousreply 124May 7, 2014 5:03 PM

Far Cry 4 just announced for fall release, on all major consoles and PC.

YAY!

by Anonymousreply 125May 16, 2014 4:30 PM

I couldn't stand it anymore and I just had to order Playstation 4 with Watch Dogs. I used to hate the console thing with expensive as hell games but now I'm getting more and more into it. I'm pretty sure I'll be paying full price for Destiny, Dragon Age Inquisition and Last of Us Remastered (which I skipped completely on PS3 because the price didn't go down enough but now I have an excuse to buy it with the new PS4). With the PS4 I also bought Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes which seems to be short and dirty fun little stealther.

Can't wait till Monday when the PS4 is delivered. I'll probably finish Dragon Age II on weekend on my PS3 to wrap things up. I've been just completely hating the anti-aliasing/jagged edges troubles with PS3 and PS4 should fix that.

They are still far away but I'm already waiting for the new Mass Effect and Deus Ex games. They'll probably look fucking gorgeous on PS4.

by Anonymousreply 126June 6, 2014 7:54 PM

My PS4 is collecting dust while I play, of all things, my Wii U.

by Anonymousreply 127June 6, 2014 8:34 PM

I'm not buying a next-gen console until next year.

Then it'll probably be an Xbox One.

by Anonymousreply 128June 6, 2014 8:36 PM

Microsoft has proven that they'd rape you if they could. Don't give them your money.

by Anonymousreply 129June 6, 2014 8:57 PM

So I've been playing with my new PS4 for the last few days. First of all: what a beautiful object. I just love the design of the piece.

PS4 at its current form feels a bit like work in progress still, although I'm not even sure if Sony's ever gonna bring back the ability to play video clips on PS4 the way you could in PS3. I really hope they do. In any case I do like that there's at least some sort of multitasking which was missing from PS3. One thing that surprised me a bit was that there's still little antialiasing problems / edge flickering in PS4, or at least in Watch_Dogs, because I thought they got away from it, but I guess I should've read reviews better, and obviously it's not just a simple PS3 vs. PS4 thing.

But yeah, I've been playing Watch_Dogs for a few hours and I'm liking it a lot. With games like this I'm always struggling whether to kill or not to kill if the other guys are not complete baddies because the situations are so life like that I feel like I have to play by my real life moral code. I have a feeling that you can't play Watch_Dogs without killing anyone, though, but at least I'll try to do it without killing innocents.

by Anonymousreply 130June 13, 2014 8:29 AM

I still play on my PC. I'm thinking about an Xbox One.

by Anonymousreply 131June 13, 2014 10:59 AM

I don't know which annoys me more, the endless stream of sequels or the endless stream of HD remakes. Square has put out HD remakes of FF X and X-2, Kingdom Hearts, and soon Kingdom Hearts II, and they're talking about an HD FF VII. Naughty Dog is doing a PS4 version The Last of Us. Microsoft is doing it for Halo. BioWare is considering it for Mass Effect. Nintendo did it for Wind Waker and is hinting that Majora's Mask might be next.

I'm still waiting for a game that's on the XBone/PS4 that is actually worth buying a new system.

If I was willing to throw good money away, I'd actually consider getting a Wii U just for Wind Waker, but I can't justify owning a system for ultimately about three games.

by Anonymousreply 132June 13, 2014 11:15 AM

I just recently purchased a PS4. I just realized they don't have a lot of games, and I have some connection issues, but it look great.

by Anonymousreply 133June 13, 2014 12:44 PM

R133, not lot of games yet, so true. But that's one of the reasons they are making the HD versions, Voice ;) Obviously updating old games takes some resources from the new game development but it's easy money for the game studios since it's only updating the old stuff. I don't mind. I might even re-buy Mass Effect trilogy if they bring it to PS4, although for that to happen two things need to happen: the trilogy together must not cost more than price of one new game and they must make Kaidan Shepard's love interest already in Mass Effect 1.

I know I was a bit mad when I bought PS4. I have a completely well working PS3 with games I haven't even started playing yet. And I'm not swimming in money, and on top of that I'm not even the biggest gamer in the world. I just felt a need to be one of the early ones experiencing something new. I used to be an Apple fan years ago and it's a bit sad but I sort of miss that cult mentality of belonging to a group using something cool and new and better than others, although at the same time I was completely aware that I was being manipulated by Apple PR.

by Anonymousreply 134June 13, 2014 5:36 PM
But that's one of the reasons they are making the HD versions, Voice ;) Obviously updating old games takes some resources from the new game development but it's easy money for the game studios since it's only updating the old stuff.

I guess, but I was hoping after nine months into a new console generation, we'd see more new things. I mean, the only brand-new property they've announced is Destiny. Everything else seems like a remake or a sequel. Assassin's Creed: Unity. Uncharted 4. Bayonetta 2. Halo 5. MGS 5. Mass Effect 4.

I don't know, it's summer vacation for me, and I find myself immersed in The Sims and old PS1 titles. Clearly, the video game zeitgeist has passed me.

by Anonymousreply 135June 13, 2014 8:44 PM

VERY much looking forward to FarCry 4 and Borderlands The Pre-Sequel.

And VOTN, "Sunset Overdrive" and "TitanFall" are both new games for the Xbox One... the former looking to be pretty original.

And like it or not, the "Halo Remastered" set for the Xbox One (the first four Halo games remasted in HD for the Xbox One, including all DLCs etc) generated a lot of excitement.

I haven't plunged into the new generation yet for a variety of reasons. But I may splurge this fall/Holiday for the Xbox One and FarCry 4.

It'll be an annoying several months of switching back and forth between the consoles (Xbox360 and XboxOne) until I'm done playing Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel and any other 360 games I have left... but I'll somehow manage.

by Anonymousreply 136June 13, 2014 8:58 PM

If the Mass Effect trilogy gets a PS4/Xbone release - it will just be a quick/cheap port. I seriously doubt they'll add anything to the games...like a male Shepard/Kaidan ME1 romance.

by Anonymousreply 137June 13, 2014 9:23 PM

Mass effect, tomb raider, batman. That's about it not a hardcore gamer.

by Anonymousreply 138June 13, 2014 9:58 PM
And VOTN, "Sunset Overdrive" and "TitanFall" are both new games for the Xbox One... the former looking to be pretty original.

You're right, I had forgotten about Sunset Overdrive, although TitanFall is already out.

And I should probably include Quantum Break, by the Alan Wake people. But that one seemed like a bait-and-switch like Watch Dogs, when it's just a shooter with some superpowers thrown in (whereas Watch Dogs had the hacking thrown in).

Anyway, we'll see where things goes.

by Anonymousreply 139June 13, 2014 10:08 PM

For some reason I've been playing a lot of Quake 3 lately.

by Anonymousreply 140June 13, 2014 10:27 PM

If they did a remastered (with lots of the PC mod enhancements to the graphics) of Skyrim and/or Fallout 3 for the Xbox One... I'd totally buy that and play it all over again.

Here's hoping Fallout 4 isn't too far away.

by Anonymousreply 141June 13, 2014 10:32 PM
If they did a remastered (with lots of the PC mod enhancements to the graphics) of Skyrim and/or Fallout 3 for the Xbox One... I'd totally buy that and play it all over again.

I think Bethesda is more likely to push into new titles instead of remakes. Right now, there's TESO and I think Fallout Four is supposed to be set in Boston.

I'm trying to convince my husband to let me buy a 3DS to play A Link Between Worlds, but I doubt I'll get very far.

by Anonymousreply 142June 13, 2014 10:37 PM

Wow

by Anonymousreply 143June 13, 2014 10:38 PM

I really want an Elder Scrolls VI as well...

(totally not into the Elder Scrolls Online)

by Anonymousreply 144June 13, 2014 10:40 PM

I'm dying for an Elder Scrolls VI. ESO is a big disappointment for me. I'm generally not into MMOs and I've yet to buy a PS4, and on top of that it seems ridiculously expensive.

by Anonymousreply 145June 13, 2014 10:46 PM

My Wii U was gathering dust for quite a while, but the situation's improving. Absolutely love the new Mario Kart 8 - gorgeous graphics, fun gameplay, and the online is very good (and reliably entertaining and rage-inducing).

Now I'm also working through some backlog games - The Last Of Us for PS3 is looking pretty good, and Super Mario 3D World is also very polished.

I think for the rest of the year the things I'm most looking forward to are Bayonetta 2 on the Wii U, Dragon Age Inquisition and the Sims 4 for PC.

I might eventually get a PS4, but honestly nothing that's been announced or released so far is compelling enough for me yet, and I'm not wild about there not being backwards PS3 compatibility. I think I might wait another year (or more) before jumping into that - hopefully the library will have been built up a bit by then.

by Anonymousreply 146June 13, 2014 10:46 PM

I've understood (but I'm not completely sure) that Shepard/Kaidan romance was already there in ME1 but it ended up being hidden in the final product. PC version was hacked to enable it. If this was the case then enabling it wouldn't be too difficult for Bioware. They've certainly shown with other games that giving gay romance option is important to them.

by Anonymousreply 147June 14, 2014 11:15 PM

I wish they'd release ME1 and 2 with MShep/Kaidan's romance enabled. I found their story line together in ME3 so damn romantic.

by Anonymousreply 148June 15, 2014 1:07 AM

I've been playing Far Cry Blood Dragon on Xbox 360 and Titan Quest on PC. Both great games! I see no reason to buy an Xbox One or PS4 yet as there aren't any games on either that interest me yet. I rented Titanfall from Redbox a week or so ago and it was fun for about 30 minutes, but then really really boring. ;(

I'm loving Watch dogs.

by Anonymousreply 150June 15, 2014 2:07 PM

I play ESO - it is pretty fun actually despite all the issues. The maps are massive, and if you pay attention to it there is A Ton of lore content.

by Anonymousreply 151June 17, 2014 12:46 PM

I've been playing Watch Dogs maybe 15 hours now on my PS4 and I'm loving it. I've been having loads of trouble learning to drive with the normal PS4 controller but I'm slowly getting somewhere. If I had money I'd probably buy one of those driving seats with a good steering wheel but not gonna happen now. I did play some driving game demos on my PS3 earlier but not much because of the controller. Now I've just had to learn to use it because Watch Dogs has loads of driving.

The walking parts are lovely because I really like the city atmosphere. The amount of work that's gone to create the city is just massive. PS4 graphics make it look so good. Watch Dogs is probably not the most inventive game but I don't care. I'm enjoying it hugely. Although I must admit that because I'm still such a shitty driver I have to replay certain missions 10+ times and that annoys me a bit, but thankfully I'm getting better at it.

The game feels huge at the moment since I've played it already so many hours and I've only done few percent of the missions. But that's probably me being a shitty player and because I just like the overall atmosphere so much that I'm not hurrying the campaigns.

I hate getting invaded R152. I can never find the person, so I thing I'm going adjust my settings.

by Anonymousreply 154June 22, 2014 6:31 PM

R154, I've been getting invaded a few times today. Since I haven't read reviews that deeply I hadn't even realized they were real other players doing that until I started online tailing someone else myself and was wondering why it took a few minutes to connect to start that mission. I normally stay away from any online multiplayer stuff but in this one it actually feels exciting.

I haven't done that great since I've lost in those online tailing battles maybe 3 times today but hopefully I'll get better. It's really hard to find the invaders and it ends up being all about running in circles but it's fun. I'm always worried, though, that I'm so bad at this that it's embarrassing and other players are laughing at me ;) Thankfully I've met just as clueless other players who've gone absolutely bonkers and keep crashing their cars just as badly as I do.

by Anonymousreply 155June 24, 2014 12:06 AM

I could barely get into video games as a child. I used to watch my cousin play for hours though.

by Anonymousreply 156June 24, 2014 12:10 AM

R147, Shepard's male voice actor recorded romance dialogue with Kaidan in ME1, so yeah there's a simple PC mod where you can make that dialogue and romance option available, although their kissing animations (and their big night together) are all off. I don't think Bioware has ever given a "straight" answer on why it's there; they tried to explain it away by saying it was just for testing / recording purposes and they were never intended for male Shepard to romance Kaidan in the first game.

I don't know, I'm okay with their romance not being available until ME3 - it kind of made it more poignant for me, these two soldiers who repressed their feelings and lived lonely lives focused on their careers who finally find romance in the finale, before the world's about to end. I've heard criticism of Bioware's games for having a very simplistic and immature take on romance - "just be nice to this character, say these dialogue options, and you can have sex!" - and there's something more realistic about not being able to romance a character until you've spent three games developing a friendship first.

And they practically "romance" each other in any case - Kaidan totally plays the pissed-off lover in ME2 when he sees you, regardless of whether you romance him, and he continues to be a bit bitter through the beginning of ME3 - it's like nice sub-textual sexual tension.

by Anonymousreply 157June 24, 2014 12:36 AM

Yeah, all the love making and stuff feels a bit silly in the Mass Effects, but the third game gets so serious that actually the love affair was a big relief from all the grimness. I've been playing Dragon Age I & II lately and since they are basically using the same formula as Mass Effects the silliness of the romances has really stood out to me. But, I'd still have them than not have them. It's nice to have gay characters as heroes after all those straight-only guys.

I played ME1 without a clue that the game would have gay romance as an option later. Still I figured that Kaidan was gay from the beginning, and I have a suspicion they wrote him gay from the start. Not that his kind of gentle and beautiful Canadian Frenchie hunk couldn't be just as hetero as anyone but still...

As a small coincidence: I just few minutes ago wrote in the 'Your Ideal Man' thread about Commander Shepard being one for me, and how while searching for a pic of Shep and Kaidan for the post I almost started crying while seeing all those pics of them together. I finished playing ME3 over 6 months ago and my feelings are still raw about it. I thought about not playing the trilogy again until they (possibly) port it to PS4 but I might have to open my heart for the heartache once again later this year and play it in PS3.

by Anonymousreply 158June 24, 2014 12:58 AM

A lot of their one-on-one interaction in ME1 comes across as vaguely homoerotic. Even without the option to go all the way, the relationship between the two of them clicks in a way it doesn't with FemShep, although I freely admit that I'm clearly not unbiased. And even though Jennifer Hale is a much better actor than Mark Meer.

Of course, it doesn't hurt that Kaiden is being compared against Ashley, the Normandy's own little Space Republican.

Well, I just bought my last game from Steam. Never again.

Their customer service sucks.

I bought a game that simply wouldn't work. On any of my systems. The game is fundamentally broken ... it will not work correctly on High DPI displays (which everything I own has).

They wouldn't refund my purchase, or even give me store credit, and their customer service was frankly pretty jerky about the entire thing.

So I basically wasted money on nothing, have nothing to show for it, can't get a refund, and have a snotty customer service rep telling me "too bad so sad" and pocketing my cash.

Fuck Steam. Fuck it right in the ass.

I'd rather pay more and drive to GameStop than ever give Steam another penny of my money at this point.

by Anonymousreply 161June 26, 2014 12:34 AM

Yeah, they said if I did that, they'd flag the account for fraud and close it, making me lose access to all my existing Steam games.

Seriously, they said that.

Try e-mailing your story to Kotaku or one of the other big gaming blogs. If this is their policy, it's probably happened to others before, and as seen with the complete 180 Microsoft did on the Xbone, organized and pissed off gamers get people to pay attention.

by Anonymousreply 163June 26, 2014 12:42 AM

That sucks. Find out where they're located. I'll go with you and let's burn those motherfuckers to the ground!!!!

That's an awful story, R160. Some companies think customers are like Santa Claus, and will keep delivering money no matter what.
I think I could probably play only Skyrim for the rest of my gaming life and be happy

Last week I started a new character, my third one... this year.

This will make my seventh play through, and I'm still finding new places, new abilities, and new ways to play. The first time I played I didn't really 'get' the concept of roleplaying a character in the game. Once I did, the game took on new dimensions, with the character determining the choices you make and the skills you work on. I ended up at Theskyrimblog.com, where people present their different character builds and got inspired. This character is more of a pure thief and I'm actually finding uses for the Pickpocket skill tree (like stealing your enemies' weapons before a fight).
I'm playing Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen, which is a great action-WRPG, sorta like Skyrim but with really fun combat

I have that game, bought it months ago. It sits on my shelf, dejected, as I fire up another round of Skyrim. Someday...
Just finished Dishonored. Very satisfying. Great (dark) plot, with twists and turns that were unexpected.... and I might even replay it

I've played the main quest twice now, once High Chaos, killing everything in front of me, then Low Chaos, killing only when necessary.

They were two totally different experiences. I went to different places, saw different things, heard different dialogue and had to play in entirely different ways. Next time I'm going for a 'ghost' play through, where no one even knows I'm there. A game like this is real value for your money.
The Batman Arkham games are awesome but I get tired of beating up thugs

Really? But that's what they're for?

I bought a PS3 in 2011 when I saw a commercial for Arkham City. It was the first gaming system I'd ever owned. It now seems appropriate that I'll be buying a PS4 next year so I can play Batman: Arkham Knight.
I'm currently playing Bioshock Infinite...the atmosphere & sound design are beautiful, but I'm not finding myself having ANY fun. I keep having to force myself to play the game. Not sure what all the hype's about.

It's the most vastly overrated game in my entire (limited) gaming experience. I had times playing it when I was asking myself: why am I kiliing all these people? Isn't there another way? Nope. If I were playing Skyrim or Dishonored, on the other hand...

I would also like to hear any experiences with Elder Scrolls Online. I've heard lots of conflicting reports.

Honestly, I'm wondering if Arkham Knight will be worth anything other than being just Arkham City with better particle effects. Nearly everything that I've read from people who played at E3 said that the Batmobile addition is completely worthless.

So it turns out that the upcoming Dragon Age: Inquisition will have the very first gay male companion character in the series - Dorian, a Tevinter male mage. There's also a previously announced lesbian companion, Sera the female elf.

While both Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age 2 allowed same-sex relationships, previous queer companions were all bisexual. In Dragon Age 2, pretty much all companions could be romanced by either gender - which gave a lot of flexibility, but also led to criticism that the characters were little more than romance / sex objects to fulfill player fantasies rather than fully-written beings with actual backgrounds and sexual orientations.

Anyway, thought it was a welcome development - Bioware (the developer of both Dragon Age and the Mass Effect series) has always been one of the most progressive developers for including same-sex relationships in their games (Mass Effect had the male Shepard-Kaidan romance, as well as other lesbian and gay characters that Shepard could pursue), and it's nice to see them adding another opportunity to pursue a romance with a gay male character.

I just pre-ordered Destiny for my PS4, yay. The beta goes online on 17th of July so I have 2 weeks to finish Watch Dogs, although I'm a bit confused whether the store I bought it from gives out the beta access codes or not (they say they do, some people say they don't). Well, I'll found out soon enough.

R167, nice to hear about Dorian. I'll probably buy Inquisition although I have yet to finish the first two games on my PS3. Even though I've enjoyed playing them to a point they haven't pulled me in the way I expected. I feel there's way too much empty running around and I just haven't been able to immerse myself into the world. It was a bit same with Mass Effect 1 where there were absolutely braindead side missions where you drove around on practically empty planets for hours. When I compare that with Watch Dogs where I sometimes just drive on motorcycle through the whole city just because I enjoy it it's like night and day.

Let's hope Dorian makes for a better (exclusively) gay Bioware character than Cortez did. Well, he wasn't a bad character so much as an awful love interest. Romancing him was just sad and felt vaguely inappropriate.

I still wish they had made Thane bisexual like the originally intended to do.

by Anonymousreply 171July 4, 2014 7:13 AM
Romancing him was just sad and felt vaguely inappropriate.

R171, that's exactly how I was feeling. I felt like I was just going through the motions even if he was an okay yet distant guy. Unfortunately it's been a bit same experience in Dragon Age 2. I haven't finished that game yet and I'm romancing Anders but I'm just not feeling the connection the same way I did with Kaidan even in ME 1 without gay romance option. I don't remember if I've even reached the gay romance part in Dragon Age Origins yet.

Of course in Origins I'm completely infatuated with Alistair, a bit same way I was with Kaidan in ME1. I have to say, though, that even with the half-heartedness of Cortez romance I still appreciated that he was a masculine gay guy. All these Dragon Age gay romance guys seem to be elves or a bit femme, although Anders is a bit of a strange mix. And as you can see I'm into masculine guys.

But still even if I'm complaining about gay options being wrong kind to me I'm glad that there are any. Bioware certainly has gotten loads of shit from the homophopic player crowd because of it.

by Anonymousreply 172July 5, 2014 6:51 AM

Yeah, like I said, I don't mind Cortez as a character, but the romance with him was awful. Who falls in love with someone while helping them work through their grief over the death of a spouse? And that's the reason there's no chemistry between them. You don't meet until the final game, and then you spend most of the time talking about someone else.

And then you if you do romance him, you have to realize that Shepard dies the next day in almost every scenario. So Cortez gets over his husband only to have the next man he opens up to die immediately after sleeping together. Poor Cortez would probably off himself after that.

I played Dragon Age 2 before I got into Mass Effect, so at the time I was really hardcore fanboying over Hawke and Anders, but now I don't really care about them that much. Shepard and Kaidan are a much more satisfying romance. Also, I've just never found DA as immersing as ME. (I'm still excited for DA3, though. Bioware has made a lifelong consumer out of me.)

Here's some Inquisition game play from E3. I can't help but find IGN's Daemon Hatfield just so bloody yummy ;)

Game looks nice, and I loved the horse. I'm not too wild about the story and the world because they didn't really set me on fire in 1 & 2 but I'll probably still buy Inquisition. Triple A games that I find super interesting are very rare so I'll have to do with ones that I enjoy at least moderately.

There was also some teasing about Mass Effect 4 from Bioware at E3. The way they used that mood music from earlier games was really nice.

Wonder what's this new IP they are hinting at...

by Anonymousreply 175July 7, 2014 7:19 AM

Hah, if you're talking about hot video game personalities, during E3 pretty much all the gay gamer guys were going wild over Nintendo's Erik Peterson during their Treehouse presentations - he kind of looks like a male fitness model.

I'm looking forward to Dragon Age: Inquisition and I hope they took a lot of the (well-deserved) criticism of DA2 to heart. At the very least it doesn't seem like a rush job where environments are being copied over and over again, and from previews it seems there's a return of a more tactical combat option. I mean, I thought the combat in DA2 could be fun, but after a while it felt like an arcade game where you were just spamming attacks against waves of enemies who showed up from nowhere.

And yeah, the plot / characters of DA generally haven't been as compelling as Mass Effect, but I think it's because it doesn't follow one central character and therefore relies on the appeal of the companions / world. DA:Origins is a very good game but in kind of a generic fantasy setting; DA2 is kind of a linear mess plot-wise, with characters that didn't appeal to me (don't get me started on Anders and how they completely changed him). In any case, I'm pretty much willing to give all Bioware games a fair chance.

by Anonymousreply 176July 7, 2014 2:45 PM

R176, that Erik Peterson certainly is a hottie. Wonder if there's any video of Daemon Hatfield interviewing him...

I'm at the moment getting hyped about Destiny. I received my Beta code and in 8 days the game will go live. Unfortunately I only just now found out that it will be playable only until the 27th, and for two days during that time it will be down for maintenance. I have a pretty busy month ahead at work so I'm wondering whether I should skip the beta altogether and wait for the final product. But knowing myself I know that I at least have play it a bit to see what the graphics are like and what's the feel of the game.

I haven't actually played that many massive space games so I'll see if I'm getting Mass Effect feeling during the play. Although the game seems to have no relationships à la Bioware/Mass Effect at all so it will obviously be quite different.

'Twas the night before Christmas... since Destiny beta is only a day away. I've been getting a bit bored with Watch Dogs' grim reality and real-life like violence so I can't wait to jump into space and enjoy gorgeous graphics of Destiny. Gameplay seems to be pretty normal shooter stuff but hopefully they've nailed the atmosphere.

BTW, it's pretty cool that at least in PS4 you can broadcast your gaming live to other people, and watch those live feeds from others. I've been watching few Watch Dogs streams and it's fascinating to see how others are playing, and also chatting with the guys watching their play. I'm not into multiplayer games with real people so I'm taking baby steps on that area. Destiny of course has few (but not many) parts where you have to have a team of real people to play with and I'll see whether I go there or just play solo.

On Civilization 5, I finally won a deity level game. That shit was hard, yo.

by Anonymousreply 180July 17, 2014 12:37 AM

So Destiny Beta started today and I played it about 15 minutes. I'm just too tired to go deeper and partly because of tiredness I was getting huge motion sickness and just had to stop.

My character looks pretty awesome (the level of detail is nice) and overall the graphics look beautiful on my PS4. Unfortunately there was one element that destroyed the immersion completely right from the beginning: the Ghost (A.I. companion to help player) is voiced by fucking Peter Dinklage and that's just too much. Even though I don't even care that much about GoT he still is completely Tyrion Lannister to me. So not a good start.

I'm not too impressed with the gameplay yet but obviously I only played it for few minutes.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 181July 18, 2014 12:35 AM

So I've been playing Destiny beta a bit, and I am not impressed. I seriously hope that there's at least some sort of story device in the game because at the moment the deepness of the story is just a bit more complex than in games like Unreal Tournament, and UT wins Destiny 10-0 in the fights department in my eyes.

Bungie is apparently forcibly pushing multiplayer gaming even if you are playing the game just by yourself. From the story point of view it's weird as hell when you are on mission to do things by yourself and suddenly there are complete strangers (i.e. other online players) in the same map fighting with enemies. They might or might not be fighting my enemies, why are they there? This just shatters the immersiveness of the gameplay.

I complained earlier already Peter Dinklage because he brings to mind GoT. Well, it's been getting even more annoying and even if I like Dinklage as a person I have to say that he's doing a piss poor job here, and that's me being polite. I fucking hell wish they had used even a completely computerized voice. When I hear Dinklage talking I immediately picture him in the recording studio reading the lines from the script in front of him. He's not Ghost, he's just Peter Dinklage reading the lines.

I'm seriously considering cancelling my preorder for the game, but I guess I'll first try to find out how much the game differs from the end product. Jesus hell, I had no idea playing Destiny would be this uncomfortable. When I die and have to play the same level again I'm not annoyed that someone killed me but that I have to play that same level again. With other shooters I've played the fights are fun and you want more, but here they are not fun at all. What a fucking letdown.

by Anonymousreply 182July 21, 2014 12:10 PM

I feel like the only one that doesn't like "Wolfenstein"... rave reviews, but I'm having to force myself to play it, and there are just so many badly designed levels, and the last one I played was super buggy... it's obnoxious.

There are good moments, but a lot of annoying crap too.

I'm struggling to finish it after three months. I have to force myself to play, and rarely last more than an hour.

by Anonymousreply 183July 22, 2014 2:54 AM

D'oh! Dragon Age: Inquisition has been delayed a month to November - I was really looking forward to playing it in October. Oh well, a month's delay isn't as bad as being pushed to next year, and I really hope this isn't a rush job like DA2 was.

Really I'm not sure if I have many games I'm looking forward to for the rest of the year. I'm planning on picking up Bayonetta / Bayonetta 2 for the Wii U, but I'm hard-pressed to think of games I want to pick up for the PC. I'm not really a FPS / shooter type of person, more of an RPG gamer, and I feel the selection's been pretty limited.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 184July 22, 2014 9:24 PM

Well it's only a six week delay, although I understand it's annoying. I'm gonna pick up DA:I as well but I've got enough games already lined up for the rest of the year that I don't mind at all this delay. I'm still in the middle of Watch Dogs and still on the fence whether to cancel Destiny preorder or not. I'm probably gonna buy Alien Isolation that's out in October, and at some point Last Of Us Remaster. And I might actually finish Dragon Age 2 before buying Inquisition ;)

by Anonymousreply 185July 23, 2014 12:49 AM

I've got nothing to play until the fall... then bam, I have both Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, and Far Cry 4 to play.

That on top of network TV and all the fall premieres!

I'M DOOMED!

by Anonymousreply 186July 23, 2014 4:35 AM

This only partly applies to games but I'm at the moment considering whether I should buy Oculus Rift-virtual reality glasses. They just started shipping v2 of their Development Kit and I want them. I'd be using them mostly for content creation but also for gaming. There are some examples in Youtube of people gaming with them and they seem to be quite immersive.

I'm currently learning to use Unreal Engine 4 although I'm not sure whether I end up making games. I'm actually more interested in creating content for the likes of Second Life or High Fidelity. My dream is a Second Life with Unreal Engine 4 quality graphics.

Here's jacksepticeye playing Mirror's Edge with v1 of Oculus Rift. I'm sure I'll be puking when I buy the headset. I sometimes get motion sickness from playing just normally with PC or PS3/4. But the future will be about virtual realities so better get used to it now.

I just bit the bullet and placed an order for the Oculus Rift Dev Kit 2 which I'd been contemplating for a while now. I know I'm just gonna die using them but I couldn't help myself.

I also cancelled Destiny's preorder and I'm happy happy happy. I'm currently slightly fed up with gaming after I finished Watch Dogs so I guess the next title I'll get won't be until October when DA:Inquisition comes out. Last Of Us Remastered tempts me but I'm not sure I can handle survival horror at the moment. Although horror has served as cathartic experience before so maybe I'll get it as a sort of therapy.

And BTW, I'm so gonna make hardcore porn scenes in 3D for the Oculus Rift. I've already planned one with C a p t a i n A m e r i c a with a woman having a go at it but I might slip in B u c k y in the scene as well. I'm taking fanfic a step forward.

I've played only Vita games recently. Ys: Memories of Celceta was great. Soul Sacrifice Delta is definitely what vanilla should have been. Also downloaded old school classics Castlevania: SOTN and Final Fantasy IX. Been trying to get Toukiden finished. Waiting on Freedom Wars to release in the US, and I am definitely keeping my eye on Tree of Savior. I haven't played a MMO in years but this looks like a very refreshing experience.

by Anonymousreply 189August 3, 2014 3:43 AM

Dragon Age: Inquisition is still 2 months away but because it's possibly the only new game I'll buy this year I've been getting to know it a bit more.

Bioware is apparently changing the romance system a bit, trying to bring out genuine affection between the characters. I hope they succeed since DA:O and DA II (which I still haven't finished) had romances that just didn't mean that much to me. Although because my benchmark is Mass Effects' Shepard/Kaidan I might just set my standards slightly too high.

There will be 8 romance options in the Inquisition, and six of them have been published so far. Two of them are male gay or bi: Dorian (on the right) is male only while the Qunari Iron Bull is for both male or female. Guy on the left is Cullen and he's only for the ladies which possibly sucks. I hope it's not another Alistair situation. He was the only one I wanted to romance in the Origins and of course he was straight. I always play as male so at the moment my only option will be to romance Dorian since I don't care about interspecies stuff.

BTW, I hadn't realized that Varric is voiced by Brian Bloom. He was in DA II and will be in Inquisition as well. I just checked his IMDb page and jesus, he's been doing voice work for huge amount of games and tv shows. Considering he's sex on legs it's funny that he's mainly doing that now.

Finally finished "Wolfenstein: The New Order".

Not sure why it got such raves to be honest. I mean, when it was good, it was a LOT of fun. But when it was bad, which it frequently was, it was annoying, frustrating, and not at all fun.

I really kinda had to force myself to finish it, and the ending was a little anti-climactic.

If there's a sequel, I do hope they fire the teams responsible for the crappy levels, and give those responsible for the fun levels free reign. It's so painfully obvious different teams did different levels.

I've never played a game like it... you can only play tiny moments here and there because upgrades take so long (like hours, and days), and harvesting resources is really slow.

It's a free game, but it's designed to encourage you to spend real money in-game to buy resources to make things go faster.

I'm refusing.

Some crafty gamers/coders have managed to enable the Oculus support for the whole Alien Isolation game (it only existed for a short Oculus demo earlier) so of course I couldn't resist the temptation and just placed an order for it as well. I'm so gonna shit my pants.

I also pre-ordered Dragon Age: Inquisition Deluxe Edition PS4 which comes out in five weeks. And to completely lose myself in games I also bought Last of Us Remastered for PS4.

I mean who needs real life anyway.

Picked up resident evil revelations and 6 for 16 bucks, really loved revelations. 6 was all over the place story wise that whole carla/ada thing was crazy. But it was a fun action game though a terrible resi evil game. The piers and chris tension was hot though and Dat sailor outfit for chris in revelations hot hot hot.
Would someone make a mint coming up with a gay combat/action game?

No because gays are a minority and straight people wouldn't want to go near it. Especially straight teenage boys (which are surely the largest gaming demographic)

by Anonymousreply 198October 14, 2014 9:54 AM

LOVING "Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel"!

Though I think it's best appreciated by someone who has finished all of the first Borderlands (including all the DLC, especially General Knoxx), and preferably finished the second one.

by Anonymousreply 199October 23, 2014 10:47 PM

R198, according to a brand new documantary about gaming apparently the average age of gamers is 35, so it's not just teens playing. And over 40% of the gamers are women. I have a feeling, though, that that figure includes all kinds of games, because I assume action/combat games still are mostly played by guys. Lot of girls playing those, too, but.. you know.

Like we've discussed a lot in this thread and elsewhere on DL there are some games with an option to have a gay protagonist, espcially in games from Bioware. Bioware has caught some shit for being gay-friendly, though, but they've sold loads of Mass Effects and Dragon Ages in spite of homophobes screaming bloody murder for gay characters.

I think the best thing really is to have a gay protagonist as an option so it's not too in your face, just they way Bioware is doing it. I'm slightly bi gay guy myself and I've dated women when younger so I don't really have problem with playing as a straight dude falling for a lady, but I understand completely if gay people don't want to play straight or straight people don't want to play gay. I always play the gay option if it's available.

So, I just spent half an hour playing Alien Isolation through Oculus Rift. Bloody hell, it was intense. Even though I tried to act cool in my own head I couldn't wait to get out of there. Thankfully I had already spent some time exploring Oculus Rift demos earlier today so I had a valid reason to bail out. The motion sickness is very real and it's just weird how physical it ends up being. I'm still feeling weird sensations in my stomach and other parts of my body, and I have a slight headache and slight pains around my eyes.

I have the Oculus Rift DK2 which still has pretty low quality specs and you see pixels easily. Everything doesn't just work out of the box or perfectly, e.g. there are problems in aligning both eyes to focus on some objects perfectly, especially on some text objects that are in a difficult place. BUT the 3D is real and the immersion is in many ways awesome as hell. It feels weird to be able to focus on different objects in 3D space the way you do in real life.

Can't say that much about the game yet. I pussied out before meeting the big baddie himself but the atmosphere was scary. Badly lit corridors and empty rooms on an empty spaceship. Obviously everything's eery. The intro with Sigourney talking as Ripley was awesome and so very Alien.

Only two weeks until Dragon Age Inquisition comes out. I'm pretty pumped about it at this point, and Dorian has grown a lot on me from the trailers I've seen.

by Anonymousreply 204November 4, 2014 5:22 PM

Not any more, really - I used to love all the Tomb Raider games, particularly the first one - the first Doom, the first Quake, even Blood (although that was a bit too violent) - Myst and the Twinsen games. The Zork games. I would buy new ones, and spend hours and hours and hours on them, lol - so much fun.

I have been OUT of all that for years, though on a rare occasion, I'll break out an old CD and fire it up for a level or two.

by Anonymousreply 205November 4, 2014 5:25 PM

Oh, and Gabriel Knight, Tex Murphy (those were fun), the first Resident Evil, surprisingly effective was the scary Alone in the Dark.

by Anonymousreply 206November 4, 2014 5:28 PM

R202, oh yes, it's all about The Inquisitor's love affair with Dorian. Well, of course not all but it's the single biggest thing I'm waiting for in DAI, but obviously it's just part of the whole experience.

I'm quite liking the Inquisitor (much more than I did Hawke) but Dorian is still a mystery to me. What I've seen of him hasn't set me on fire but I hope I end up liking him when the time comes. I also must say that the other gay love interest The Iron Bull seemed sexy with his stubble and those huge muscles in one game play video. I might end up ditching Dorian for him although him being another species might scare me to keep Dorian.

Dragon Age Inquisition is getting good reviews, even rave ones. Only few days to go before it comes out, yay. My PS4 is waiting.

I finally finished Dragon Age 2 but I must admit my heart was not in it. I even ended up killing my beloved Anders because I got so pissed off at him killing all those people. Both Origins and DA:2 failed to really make me love them but I'm trying to jump into Inquisition completely. I need a good alternate reality to offer me a sanctuary from the real life for a while. Love affair with Dorian here I come.

I just spent half an hour importing my earlier games from PS3 to dragonagekeep.com. I did alter some events a bit though, I let Anders live for one. Now that state of the world will be imported into Inquisition. The keep is pretty well made and you get to see a 'movie' of all the actions that have happened in the Origins and the DA:2 based on your import and the way you alter things (actions, romances etc). It was narrated by Varric who's voiced by Brian Bloom. I love hearing him talking. Dude's pretty as hell but also has such a beautiful voice.

by Anonymousreply 208November 12, 2014 9:55 PM

Yeah, DAI has gotten some of the strongest reviews for any game this year (of the top of my head, the only things above it that aren't remakes/rereleases are Bayonetta 2 and Dark Souls 2). But not only that, but Dorian and Bull (the two queer guys) got by far the most positive attention out of the new companions. (Obviously almost everyone mentioned Cassandra and Varric since they're already known by the audience.) That's really encouraging, Dorian in particular got a lot of praise for being the writing and acting highlight and several people said he was their favorite.

Yall better show bioware support and buy dragon age.

by Anonymousreply 210November 13, 2014 11:15 AM

I'm currently playing the 17th Assassin's Creed game "Unity" and still love this franchise. I just recently finished "Shadow of Mordor." I don't give a shit about LOTR but it's one of the better games I've played.

by Anonymousreply 211November 13, 2014 11:20 AM

Just finished Dragon Age: Origins this week, and now I'm playing the 'Awaking' expansion. Obviously, I really like it, but it took a LONG time for me to get into it. The gameplay was a big turnoff for a while. If only you could blend the story, dialogue and characters from 'Age,' with the gameplay of Dragon's Dogma' that would be a game!

I'd played some of Dragon Age 2, and found it so-so. I'll be finishing it after '.Awakening,' and I'm getting a PS4 next month. First I'm playing 'Shadow of Mordor' (after reading Lord of the Rings), And now, based on the reviews, I guess I'll be getting 'DA:I' Glad to hear it's so good.

by Anonymousreply 212November 14, 2014 1:39 AM

Far Cry 4 comes out next week... that game is going to suck up much of my life for the next few months, I imagine.

by Anonymousreply 213November 14, 2014 1:52 PM

Yeah, the combat in DAO is pretty terrible. I have no idea why it always gets so much praise. I've only beaten it twice, which is nothing for me when it comes to games I enjoy. I thought about playing it again before DAI comes out, but the thought of slogging through 45 hours or so of that combat is too much of a deterrent. Whereas I've played DA2 half a dozen times, despite it's flaws. Also, if anyone is playing DA2 to prepare for DAI, I absolutely suggest picking up the Legacy DLC for it. Not only is it the best part of the game when it comes to story and combat, but it looks like it's elements introduced in it are going to be crucial in DAI.

by Anonymousreply 214November 14, 2014 2:38 PM

Just bought Far Cry 4, and an Xbox One to play it on. Though it's going to take some time to figure out how to configure the Xbox One for my home theater system... given my surround sound amp doesn't have HDMI audio pass through (only video).

by Anonymousreply 218November 19, 2014 9:44 PM

Fuck. I was supposed to receive Dragon Age Inquisition today and now the reseller says he can't deliver the game this week. I had already paid the game and I'm fucking pissed. It's been an especially shitty week and I was dreaming of the Dragon Age weekend where I could forget everything.

Fast forward 10 minutes >>> Well, I didn't really have money for this at the moment but I just bought the game from Playstation Store where it cost $20 more. And the download is only 41 gigs, jesus... Well at least the weekend is saved.

by Anonymousreply 219November 20, 2014 4:22 PM

About 15 hours of Dragon Age Inquisition gameplay behind and I can say I'm falling in love with it. Much much better than either of its predecessors. Obviously visuals are hugely improved (I'm playing on PS4) but the gameplay itself feels smoother. There are however some bugs, which seem to be the norm in the series, but thankfully they don't ruin the experience. I totally get why the pushed the release date couple of times.

I've yet to meet Dorian. I've taken my time doing the small missions and just enjoying moving around in the woods. Haven't even seen a dragon yet. If I don't get tired of the game I can easily see myself clocking in 60 to 100 hours.

(BTW, the download version from PS Store was about 5.4 gb. I always forget they only say the installation size there. Game's over 44 gb on disk.)

by Anonymousreply 220November 23, 2014 11:08 PM

Far Cry 4 is pretty fucking awesome.

Just got an Xbox One too, and it's pretty awesome too.

by Anonymousreply 221November 24, 2014 12:24 AM

I've been playing through Dragon Age Inquisition also. I think the combat is more fun than DA2, but I still kind of prefer the tactical combat of DA: Origins (I'm a PC player) - like, there's no use issuing commands to the rest of your party besides heal; I just kind of hold down the attack button on my character and spam abilities, so there doesn't seem to be as much variety to the combat.

Also, as huge and gorgeous as the world is, I feel I spend so much time just walking (and looting plants and metals) and there aren't that many enemies in the field, so the size of the world seems a bit artificially huge - even if it's more realistic that you're not engaging in combat every minute.

I recruited Dorian and the character seems promising, so I'll probably go with him as my romance option. Iron Bull actually seems pretty funny too, and he's also a romance option for males (good for you size queens out there...)

I was browsing another video game forum (NeoGAF) and looking at some of the Inquisitors people had created. Some of the guys people make in the character creator are really kind of hot - which is impressive, given that most of the hair options for guys are straight out of a bad fantasy novel and have flat lighting that make them look like an animal died on your head.

by Anonymousreply 222November 24, 2014 2:44 PM

Iron Bull's romance makes me downright uncomfortable, so unfortunately, this looks like another Bioware game where I'm whittled down to one love interest by default. Luckily Dorian is everything I could have asked for, and rivals Kaidan from ME3, so I'm not that upset. Bull is a great character platonically, though.

by Anonymousreply 223November 24, 2014 3:16 PM

What's uncomfortable about it (without spoiling anything - I'm not that far in the game yet)?

I think my final party will probably end up being Dorian, Iron Bull, and Sera (who I hear is hilarious but can also be grating to some players), with my Inquisitor as a mage / Knight Enchanter tank - so there'll be no straight people at all in my party :p

by Anonymousreply 224November 24, 2014 3:19 PM

I honestly don't know how to explain it without getting into spoiler territory, so you may or may not want to continue reading.

Bull is into bdsm, will only top, and makes a big deal about how you "need" this from him. However, he mentions switching things up with other people, yet he's very adamant about it with the Inquisitor. It comes off as him seeing you as a challenge and something to be controlled rather than a partner. You also aren't given any opportunity to discuss the dynamic of your relationship with him, which is by far my biggest problem with it. Your options are to let him do what he wants to you or break it off with him. There's also just too much emphasis on sex for me. They try to work in emotional connection toward the end, but it felt haphazard and sloppy to me.

Anyway, I guess it's a taste thing. I've heard a lot of people talking about how much they love his romance. (Because in real life there are plenty of people who get off on controlling, domineering assholes.) But it's just not the sort of relationship I'm looking for, especially when it's not something I felt like I had any sort of agency about. I'm just disappointed. I was really excited about Bull, but now I wish they would have left the rape-y, Fifty Shades of Grey thing to the ladies and made Cullen or even Blackwall the bisexual guy.

by Anonymousreply 225November 24, 2014 3:46 PM

Oh, and Dorian/Bull/Sera have really great synergy with each other, both in combat and in banter. Sera is actually probably the stand out when it comes to banter. She has really amazing chemistry with everyone. Unfortunately, I'm an archer rogue myself, so I tend not to use her all that often. I'm sure she'll be a regular for me whenever I'm playing as a mage or warrior.

I've mostly been using Cassandra (who I adore), Dorian, and either Bull or Vivienne (who has totally surprised me with how brilliant she is).

by Anonymousreply 226November 24, 2014 3:49 PM

In FarCry4, we learn that eagles are assholes. And honey-badgers are obnoxious. And never EVER piss off a rhino.

by Anonymousreply 227November 24, 2014 4:10 PM
Also, as huge and gorgeous as the world is, I feel I spend so much time just walking (and looting plants and metals) and there aren't that many enemies in the field, so the size of the world seems a bit artificially huge - even if it's more realistic that you're not engaging in combat every minute.

Riding a horse makes trekking the woods faster. And obviously you can always just fast travel to the nearest camp through the map and ride or run to the event place from there. I like that you usually have to spend some effort to get somewhere and not just snap your fingers and transport there immediately.

It's true that looting and collecting plants and metals gets boring after a while. You just have to see the value of that by crafting weapons and other stuff where you need those stones and animal hides.

BTW, if you're not that skilled yet beware of the bears. Those motherfuckers are hard to kill and they like to gang up on their prey.

by Anonymousreply 228November 24, 2014 4:30 PM

Thanks for that critique, R225 (and I didn't think it was spoilerish on any plot points) - interesting that they'd give that sort of take on him for the romance. I guess if you're going to romance a big Qunari named "Bull" some of that fantasy comes with the territory, but I agree it doesn't seem like an ideal romance, and some of that may just be the writing.

Honestly, Bioware can be really hit or miss with its writing and fall into some bad tropes - I thought DA2 was pretty poor all around, especially Anders - but then they'll have bright spots like the Shepard-Kaidan romance in ME3, which I thought was pretty well-done (and not just because of my bias for two guys).

And yeah, I use fast travel and used the horse in the desert (because I like to "fill out" my maps and I wasn't going to do that on foot); it just feels sometimes like there's a lot of empty space between quest markers on the map, and I can only harvest so much elfroot and iron.

by Anonymousreply 229November 24, 2014 4:58 PM

LOL R227. The fucking eagles and the little mink things in the grass are ridiculous.

by Anonymousreply 230November 24, 2014 5:09 PM

R230, just last night I witnessed a giant eagle swoop down on a pig in the road right in front of me, AND CARRY IT OFF!

Holy crap!

The Inquisitor / Maxwell coming on to the straight Cullen in DA:I was funny as hell. Just few seconds long but so nice. Made me chuckle for a bit.

I love MySims

by Anonymousreply 238December 1, 2014 9:25 PM

70 hours in at DAI and I'm probably not even half way through. Yeah I know I should play bit more efficiently but I enjoy the game quite a lot so it hasn't been a problem. I must say I'm not too happy about having to spend so bloody much time managing the inventory. Players have asked Bioware to bring back the home stash from DA2 where the unneeded stuff could be stored for a later use but apparently Bioware doesn't think it's that important.

And yeah, can't help it. I play as the stock warrior Maxwell and I ended up falling in love with Cullen. I'm having a romance with Dorian but it's Cullen that rocks my cock. I love his voice. It's a shame I can't romance him but there's nothing I can do since I want to play as male. And I haven't even met Iron Bull. I just checked where I was supposed to see him and apparently I missed him at the Storm Coast storyline. Guess I have to try to find him since he seems to be a great character. And good at killing dragons, people say. I've only killed one at this point. Was a bitch to kill.

DA fans probably have read about this ages ago but I stumbled only recently on the speculations that Dragon Age and Mass Effect could be happening in the same universe, and even at the same time. It all could be just Bioware guys dicking around with sharing some elements (like the Krogan head trophy in the wall at DAI) but it's still a wild idea.

by Anonymousreply 240December 13, 2014 7:50 PM

I've been playing Far Cry 4 all day. Hours and hours and hours... eat... hours and hours more ... sleep... hours and hours more...

I haven't had this kind of obsession with a game since Skyrim.

by Anonymousreply 241December 13, 2014 10:58 PM

I finished my playthrough of Dragon Age Inquisition at 80 hours - I pretty much completed all the sidequests, though there were definitely a few things I missed out on.

Great game with gorgeous visuals, even if the ending was a bit abrupt, and the game overall is on the buggy side and in need of some serious patching. I think I ultimately still prefer Dragon Age Origins for its tactical combat (Inquisition is more of an action RPG, and your companions can't plan attacks for crap), but after the disappointment of DA2 this was a great return to form.

The romance with Dorian is very sweet - R239, I can understand the attraction to Cullen, but I thought Dorian was charming (and had a sexy voice) as well. Oh, and sadly Iron Bull actually isn't that great for dragons - he deals high damage but has really poor defense, so he ends up gobbling health potions. I wanted to use him in my party more because his banter is pretty funny, but sometimes you gotta go with the stronger fighters.

I ended up looking at videos online of banter and scenes with the companions I didn't / couldn't romance, and I have to say Iron Bull's male romance is pretty hilarious... poor Cullen. (spoilery video at link)

by Anonymousreply 242December 15, 2014 7:19 AM

R242, I saw that video yesterday, it's funny. And yeah, I have a tendency to fall for the pretty straight guys, especially the ones who are strong but have some weaknesses, so Cullen is right up my alley. I find Dorian a bit of a gay cliché but he's still very enjoyable and I do like him a lot.

I'm actually a bit amazed how I've managed to already spend 70 hours in DAI. I finished Watch Dogs in maybe 60 hours in the summer and I pretty much loved that game. I don't even feel like I've played DAI a lot. I guess it just goes to show I enjoy Thedas this time since I never did like Origins and DA2 very much. I bought them last year and only managed to finish DA2 just before DAI came out. Still haven't finished Origins and I doubt I ever will. The graphics and the overall storytelling of DAI are just so much better so going back to Origins feels impossible. But you never know.

DAI sure is buggy. It's the first time a game has crashed on Playstation for me. Unfortunately it seems the update few days back made the audio buggy at times for me but overall the bugs are manageable and don't really affect my game playing.

Here's a fun little video Bioware made for the Game Awards:

While browsing another forum I learned about one of the first Western-developed "visual novel" games made for gay men, "Coming Out on Top" (subtle title), which was released this past week. It's basically a text-based dating sim with supporting art, with the goal being to end up in a relationship with one of the guys (and see the explicit sex scenes that result).

I put in some time with the demo, and the writing actually wasn't terrible for a game in the genre - some of it was cute, and more than a little silly. And the sex was kinda hot...

Also, I find it hilarious that the game gives you the option to turn facial and body hair on / off for each of the guys - so I guess kudos to the developer for trying to give choices, even if all the guys look like muscular gym bunnies.

I'm about three-quarters the way through Far Cry 4 now. I'm so addicted to it, I've been neglecting household chores, Christmas shopping, wrapping, and mailing. And sleep.

I just can't put it down!

by Anonymousreply 245December 16, 2014 4:42 AM

So, it turns out that Cullen was supposed to be bisexual in DAI. Someone found audio files in the game of the final balcony scene that all romances get which was of Cullen and the male Inquisitor. He also found files of Dorian and Cassandra (who are only romancable by a male character) telling the Inquisitor to break up with Cullen first if he wants to be involved with them. Then a former Bioware developer confirmed it on Twitter. (Screen shot attached.)

I'm pretty fucking disappointed about it, frankly.

I'm nearly 85% of the way through Far Cry 4 now. I'm actually avoiding finishing it... just exploring around, trying to do every single side-quest, collect every single artifact, find every single named location, before doing the last few campaign missions.

It's been so fun, so engrossing, so addictive, that I'm really going to miss it when I'm done.

by Anonymousreply 247December 20, 2014 5:09 AM

R246, fucking lazy cinedesigner. Like I've written many times in this thread Cullen is the only man I'm truly interested in romancing in DAI. Many times I run by his office at the Skyhold just to be alone with him for a bit. Dorian is someone I'd be happy to be just friends with and my Maxwell romancing him somehow just doesn't feel right. Dorian screaming in the fights "I'm too pretty to die" makes my dick go soft for him. If this wasn't Dragon Age I'd even might be mildly offended by that.

I sincerely hope they make Cullen bisexual in some update although I guess if it doesn't happen in the next two weeks I don't care anymore. I rarely play these huge games again, they just take too much time. Fucking cinedesigner (and obviously the whole production team for not getting him/her more help), I mean really.

by Anonymousreply 248December 20, 2014 12:10 PM

Finally finished Far Cry 4.

That game has spoiled me, I think, for all other games.

The freedom of the open-world, and all the millions of things to do, all the little stories going on throughout the game... so immense, so amazing, so enthralling.

LOVED IT.

by Anonymousreply 249January 2, 2015 5:18 PM

The Far Cry games bore me.

by Anonymousreply 250January 2, 2015 5:29 PM

There was literally nothing boring about FC4.

I think each Far Cry game gets significantly better than the previous one.

by Anonymousreply 251January 2, 2015 8:35 PM

That makes sense since a common criticism of FC4 was that it was just a rehash of FC3 with a different setting and polished mechanics.

by Anonymousreply 252January 3, 2015 7:50 PM

Most of the reviews I read commented on that, but didn't really use it as a criticism. In fact, one headline was "FC4 is like a better FC3... and that's a good thing!"

I'd be fine if Far Cry 5 was much the same, to be honest. Good is good. Add just enough new things and just enough refinements to make it noticeably better, but keep the same massive open-world, HUNDREDS of hours of game-play, and tense fun.

by Anonymousreply 253January 3, 2015 8:06 PM

I noticed that several in my program play xboxone including my crush. i was over at a friends house since I don't have a gaming device and he signed me up to play. I interacted with my crush but because my character was at a lower level, he wouldn't pay attention to me. I even tried to bump into him virtually and he clubbed me. I wonder if he knows It's me? Should I tell him We are in the same program or is the reason he won't play because he thinks i'm in a different major? I was so happy he clubbed me though, at least he noticed me.

by Anonymousreply 256January 3, 2015 9:57 PM

Well I won a Wii U bundle on XMAS Eve. Haven't own a console since original Playstation. Was bored on XMAS Day, set it up & now I'm playing some Mario World game. It helped cure my boredom the past few days.

by Anonymousreply 257January 3, 2015 10:11 PM

R257, congrats to you. Be sure to grab Mario Kart 8 - really fun, beautiful-looking game, and it's great to play either by yourself, with friends, or against online competitors.

by Anonymousreply 258January 3, 2015 10:18 PM

R255, I've played Alien: Isolation a little bit. I wrote about it at R201.

I'm sad to say I haven't returned to the game after November. I only want to play it with my Oculus Rift glasses but since I was worried about the pain I felt in my eyes I haven't gone back yet. Another reason is that I haven't felt the need to be terrified recently. And I mean really terrified, playing Alien Isolation with Oculus Rift is one claustrophobic experience. I'm tense from the second I step in. I sound like such a pussy but it feels nice to see the lights from my keyboard shining below the glasses, as a confirmation that I'm safe.

I'm not a huge horror fan but I love Alien films, and some Alien/Predator comics. Playing the game with Oculus Rift is a step into a darker place, at least to me. I guess I'm just such a newbie with virtual reality that the game feels extra terrifying because of it.

My gaming needs otherwise have been met by Dragon Age: Inquisition. 120 hours behind and I'm slowly wrapping it up. I've killed 8 dragons, 2 to go. There are quite a few side missions still in progress but at 100 hours I made a decision to only collect all the remaining shards and to kill the remaining dragons and then move to the final stage of the game. I finished the shard collection yesterday (to get the extra protection from the elements) and after I'll kill the 2 remaining dragons it's the end game time. Morgana is waiting for me in the garden.

Before starting up DA:I I usually play Resogun a bit. A nice side-scrolling shoot 'em up. It's quite addictive.

I wish TitanFall were single-player. I hate multi-player PvP games. But I love everything ELSE about TitanFall.

Now that I'm done with Far Cry 4, I guess I'll just have to wait until either Fallout 4 or Elder Scrolls VI comes out (Skyrim sequel).

These are easily my favorite kind of games. Completely open world games that allow you to explore in the first person, but with lots of shooting in addition to finding things and quests and stealth and story.

by Anonymousreply 261January 4, 2015 7:28 PM

R261, it sounds Dragon Age Inquisition is right up your alley. The maps are huge, and all the things you listed are pretty much pure DA:I.

by Anonymousreply 262January 5, 2015 6:36 AM

I tried the previous Dragon Age, and never got into it. Same with Mass Effect. And even my friend who loved the previous Dragon Age found the current one 'meh' because the combat was so dumb/wonky.

I should point out I dislike endless cut-scenes (HATED Red Dead Redemption), and dialog-option heavy conversations.

by Anonymousreply 263January 5, 2015 12:49 PM

Every straight gamer would avoid it like the plague!

by Anonymousreply 264January 5, 2015 12:58 PM

R263, yeah if you don't like something you just don't like it. I personally loved Mass Effect trilogy, and especially ME3 which ended up being probably the most profound entertainment experience I've ever had, possibly topping some very important gay films like Maurice and Brokeback Mountain that have made me almost physically ill.

I seriously fell into a depression for over a week after finishing the game, it was just crazy. And now, a year after I finished ME3 I still feel a tightening in my stomach when I just think about its athmosphere for a second. Even though I personally loved the darkness of the game I completely understand why loads of gamers hated the ending so deeply. They felt the pain, too. Bioware knows how to write wicked game storylines, but I totally get if some people don't care about them.

I'm wondering what your friend meant with combat being wonky in DA:I when compared to Dragon Age Origins or DA2. I've personally thought the combat is pretty logical in DA:I because you can either control it from every player's perspective or just fight yourself and let AI take care of rest. I think DA:I is by far the most elegant game in the series in every way, although I must say I didn't finish Origins. DA:I unfortunately has loads of bugs, though, but I won't let them bother me.

I love well made cut scenes, they be can gorgeous. I'm not ashamed to say that I've had tears in my eyes in couple of DA:I's cut scenes. Dialog-option conversations feel a bit fake in many ways but I don't mind them, especially after getting used to them in Mass Effects and earlier Dragon Age games.

by Anonymousreply 265January 5, 2015 2:09 PM

R263, I can't think of any other open-world shooters, but if you're willing to try open-world RPGs with good / excellent combat, try Dragon's Dogma.

Honestly the best combat system of any action RPG out there, with a lot of variety and different classes to suit different play-styles - you can also change your class at any time (sometimes you need to change classes if you want to finish all quests). It follows the traditional structure of modern open-world RPGs - lots of sidequests and fetch-quests in huge open maps, etc. - but is light on cutscenes (and plot, to be honest). It even offers the option to have a gay romance, though the romance mechanics are shallow and none of the NPCs are particularly memorable.

It's only available on PS3 and 360, unfortunately - I wish they'd release a PC port, because I'd love to experience it with upgraded textures and the ability to control framerate.

I really enjoyed Dragon Age Inquisition, but I kind of feel like they were trying to mix two different genres - the tactical RPG (which Dragon Age Origins was, and did better) and the modern action RPG like Dragon's Dogma, and ended up falling somewhere in the middle and not offering the best experience for either.

by Anonymousreply 266January 5, 2015 3:08 PM

R266, can you compare it to Skyrim?

Honestly, Skyrim was the first RPG-like game I was ever able to get into (couldn't get into previous Elder Scrolls games). So I'm curious.

I'm mostly a first-person-shooter guy, but Skyrim really grabbed me for some reason, and I just loved it (and spent two hundred hours in it easily, with all the DLCs and such)... in SPITE of how buggy it was.

I tried to start the Mass Effect series, and it never grabbed me, and when I got stuck on this huge space-station I couldn't find my way around, with no quest markers to help me figure out where the fuck to go, I gave up. It was so frustrating it utterly ceased to be fun.

I don't like games that turn out to be WORK... or that abandon you with no idea of what to do next. Or that make me think I'm just watching a movie... endless cut-scenes, and my input in conversations doesn't really affect any outcomes (or the options never match what I want to say). I've had so many bad game experiences, that the good ones stand out sharply. And Skyrim was one of my favorite games ever.

by Anonymousreply 267January 5, 2015 4:49 PM

R267, I've actually never played through Skyrim (though I own it) - it's in my backlog :) But Dragon's Dogma is pretty similar in general setup and plot, and I think the quest management system and map, etc. are pretty well-organized for an open-world game. The current version of Dragon's Dogma available ("Dark Arisen") also makes some improvements over the original game, e.g. by allowing for more fast-travel points.

Probably the best way to see if it's something you're interested in is to watch a trailer - there's one at the link; the trailer uses a lot of story cutscenes, but it still shows off the different types of gameplay (fighting huge monsters, different play-styles for the archer classes vs. warrior classes vs. mage classes, etc.)

Never played a Far Cry game but just watched some gameplay footage on Youtube…apparently you have to go around pulling hearts out of animals? Gross. Not sure I could stomach that. Think I'll be sticking with GTA V for now. I made my online character gay. He's hot.

OH and I forgot to mention he's in a gay crew too!

by Anonymousreply 270January 5, 2015 6:41 PM
Not sure I could stomach that. Think I'll be sticking with GTA V for now.

... the irony.
Never played a Far Cry game but just watched some gameplay footage on Youtube…apparently you have to go around pulling hearts out of animals?

Technically, you're skinning animals (to upgrade your packs and such) and taking bait (to distract predators or get them to attack your enemies). But the stock animation does look like you're ripping out their hearts, and nothing like 'skinning', so you're forgiven for thinking that. One of the few false-notes in the game.

But yeah, dealing with wildlife is a big part of the game (it's always out there, and the predators WILL attack, and DO quite often).

by Anonymousreply 271January 5, 2015 6:59 PM

GTA V might be bloody but you don't see organs or anything, so it doesn't bother me at all.

R267, I remember when I started with ME1 I played it on my pc for maybe 10 hours but I just didn't really care about it. I forgot about it for months and then for some reason I started playing it on my PS3. There probably was some super sale and I bought the whole trilogy. ME1 never really set me on fire but I really liked Shepard and Kaidan in it. And I did love the idea of space travelling it had. It was really ME2 that made me really like that world and then ME3 made me completely fall in love with it.

I remember vaguely being a bit lost on the Normandy in the beginning but when you just explore things you'll find the story elements you need to see. I don't actually remember that much about the GUI of the game so I don't remember if you could see all the missions and the side quests etc. from place like Journal that's in DA:I. But it was all very logical when you just used it for a while.

by Anonymousreply 273January 6, 2015 3:50 AM

Getting dumped onto the Citadel during ME1 for the first time is incredibly confusing. I'm a huge ME fan, but you'll get no argument from me there. Also, the combat system in the game is atrocious.

Luckily I started with ME3 because if my introduction had been ME1, I'm not sure I would have finished it either.

Anyway, I'd recommend trying ME2 or ME3 before writing the series off. ME1 was a great story, but the other two trounce it when it comes to the actual game portion of a video game. (Plus you can get used copies off Amazon for like five bucks.)

by Anonymousreply 274January 6, 2015 11:15 AM

And it's no sin to use some hints from the gaming guides from the net. I try to play games on my own first but e.g. with DA:I I was starting to finally get a bit bored after 100 hours so I checked out where to find some elements to finish couple of side tasks (mainly shard collecting).

And after finishing ME3 I realized that I really should've read some gaming guides during the game since I hadn't realized how shitty my experience levels were. I thought I was ok until it turned out in the end that my poor Shepard was weak as hell against the Reapers and the final ending turned out to be one of the grimmest available.

Anyone play "Sunset Overdrive" on Xbox One? I'm curious about other people's opinions and thoughts on that one...

by Anonymousreply 278January 8, 2015 4:12 PM

I just finished Dragon Age Inquisition after 122 hours. Such a great game, even though the bugs did unfortunately bring down the experience quite a lot in the end. When you hear Dorian and Varric have the same conversation the 30th time about betting on the Inquisitor's chances you sort of start to lose your patience. I looked up from the net the other banter party members were having and found out I missed a lot of it which is really a shame.

I made the mistake of trying to finish loads of smaller missions before the final big story mission and it sort of ruined the story part a bit. But anyway the game is in the top three of AAA games for me with Deus Ex Human Revolution and Mass Effect 3. It made me even shed a few tears. The singing scene after the Haven attack was really touching. And I completely loved the end scene with my dear Maxwell and Dorian hugging it out on the balcony, happily ever after. Still wished it was Cullen but what can you do.

The end fight was pretty lackluster, partly because me and my crew were so powerful that we killed the bosses in 10 minutes. But maybe it was meant to be if the speculation about the Solas epilogue is true. I sincerely hope it was a cliffhanger meant to lead to Elven gods DLC.

But still, overall a gorgeous game. Bioware absolutely rocks.

by Anonymousreply 279January 12, 2015 4:47 PM

Just started Sunset Overdrive. It's kind of insane in a fun way.

by Anonymousreply 280January 12, 2015 4:58 PM

Finishing Tales of Xillia = good JRPG but the voice actress who plays milla is laughably bad.

by Anonymousreply 281January 16, 2015 7:10 AM

After finishing Dragon Age Inquisition a week ago I've been playing very little, just an hour or so of Alien Isolation using Oculus Rift. Still creepy as fuck, and I almost got into the puking point with the Rift but stopped just before. Had to spend few hours feeling dizzy afterwards, though.

My next big jump into an AAA game was supposed to be Order 1886 but I've been reading mixed reviews of the latest demo they let the game press play and it's making me nervous. Game apparently looks gorgeous, voice acting is top notch and the game has a great atmosphere but the gaming mechanics are causing trouble to some reviewers. Well, we'll see when the final game reviews start to come out. Game went gold just yesterday and will be out in a month.

I hear Dishonored 2 is coming out this year or next? That was a fun game.

by Anonymousreply 283January 21, 2015 12:42 AM

Last year the game I was looking forward to most was Dragon Age: Inquisition, and it mostly delivered (though it's far from perfect - I'm glad they're continuing to release patches for it though).

Not really much I'm looking forward to on PC or PS4/XBOne this year. For some reason the two games that have me the most excited are both on the Nintendo Wii U - the new open-world Zelda and Xenoblade Chronicles X (which is a sequel to the best RPG of last generation, Xenoblade).

by Anonymousreply 284January 21, 2015 2:10 AM

So true about Xenoblade. For any JRPG fan, it's the best reason to pick up a Wii. I'm thinking of picking up the new 3DSXL just to play it portably.

Anyone catch the Microsoft Windows 10 event today? Lots of reveals around Xbox, streaming any Xbox game to any Windows 10 device, Game DVR on any Windows PC game running on Windows 10, improved Xbox app on all desktops, tablets, and phones that allows you to connect with Xbox Live friends, events, notifications, etc.

Looked really cool.

by Anonymousreply 286January 21, 2015 8:28 PM

The biggest announcement was DirectX 12, which will dramatically increase the performance of games, as well as the amount of detail they can display, all while using less battery.

Xbox One games (and PC Games, and Windows 10 tablet & phone games) are about to get a hell of a lot better.

Almost done with "Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel"

by Anonymousreply 291January 25, 2015 11:24 PM

Life is super shitty at the moment and I need to distract myself from it hard. I finished DA:I few weeks ago and I've been wondering should I start the Mass Effect trilogy again. I have The Last Of Us but I'm not feeling something so realistic. I want to go into space and see aliens. And I want Kaidan to love me again. I miss the Mass Effect mood, god just thinking about its music makes me almost physically yearn returning there.

Playing the whole trilogy takes huge amount of time and I'd love to just play ME3 but I can't import the old saves since I killed Kaidan in ME1 so I'd have to start afresh. Doing that I'd lose Wrex and some other characters as well. And this time I need a Perfect Ending, meaning survival, and apparently you need to import your Shepard from ME2 for that to happen. Or finish ME3 the second time but I'm afraid I've destroyed the earlier save data on my PS3. I'd still lose Wrex, though.

It would be so good to have Dragon Age Keep for ME3 where you'd get to choose your history. Now to get the Perfect Ending I gather you have to do exactly the right things from ME1 to ME3. Ok, I guess I'll print out the list of things to do. After that I'm ready to return to Normandy.

Bloody hell, googling this picture after a long time made me almost burst in tears. Shepard MUST survive this time.

I finished Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel playing co-op with two other friends, and am now going through it again with the new character, Ms. Hammerlock that was just released. She's a ton of fun.

by Anonymousreply 293February 7, 2015 4:27 PM

Ha, R292, I actually played through the entire Mass Effect trilogy last month after finishing DA:I, because I fell into a massive procrastination hole. It IS a time sink, though maybe the equivalent of a DA:I playthrough - roughly 40 hours per game, if you're doing all the DLCs and finishing all the sidequests. It was fun, though - I caught a lot of little story moments and plot points I missed the first time around.

I prefer playing the games on PC, because you can apply mods (and also download other people's save files if you don't want to play through the first two games). Maybe consider buying a PC copy of the game so you can use someone else's save? They go pretty cheap nowadays (like in the $10 range, though you also have to consider the DLC). And if you play it on PC, you can apply the various happy-ending mods out there, which slightly alter / improve the extended cut ending.

I actually might replay ME3 again someday - I enjoy the combat and story that much - but I think it also reflects on the lack of titles that excite me at the moment. I was thinking of replaying DA:I on Nightmare difficulty, but I think I'll wait for them to finish putting out patches (and to get a better video card).

by Anonymousreply 294February 8, 2015 3:04 AM

R294, I actually do have the pc version of Mass Effect 1 and I'm tempted to play it with Kaidan male romance patch. Unfortunately my desktop computer (with 4GB GTX 970) is at my work office and I decided long ago to play massive games only on my Playstations at home. And you can't import save data from pc to PS3 so I'll play the trilogy on my PS3. I'll just have to watch the Shep/Kaidan ME1 gay romance from the Youtube after playing the game.

I installed the game on PS3 last night and noticed there was a game save just before I had to choose between Kaidan or Ashley. Because this is the reason I'd need to play ME1 again I'm considering what to do. I'm sort of tempted to finish the game now and move on to ME2 but then again it feels like a cop out. If I replay the whole game I'm gonna skip the endless driving around missions on those empty planes, they were boring as hell. I have to check whether the earlier achievements somehow carry on to the replayed game, though, since some seem to do. To my understanding you can't even achieve some things with just one playthrough.

Unfortunately there are no mods for PS3 games. In a way it's nice you're getting the experience the game makers wanted but there's no denying mods on pc might make gaming more fun.

by Anonymousreply 295February 8, 2015 12:22 PM

I finished Mass Effect 1 last night. It was nice to return to that world. I remembered practically everything what happened but it didn't matter. I skipped loads of the sidequests and finished the game in under 20 hours. It did help that I could start playing with the rank and all the talent points from my previously finished run, so it was obviously super easy to kill the baddies. The only problematic fights were couple of boss fights in the end. I guess I could've changed the difficulty but naah, I enjoyed it this way this time.

I started playing Mass Effect 2 right after. How annoying that they swapped some of the controls but I'm getting used to it. It's stupid and funny how emotional it is to meet the old team mates one by one, I mean I played with them last night but the ME story is so well made that you do get a feeling that Shep's really gone for 2 years.

I'm about to meet Garrus so I'm off...

by Anonymousreply 296February 14, 2015 6:10 PM

I was thinking of playing Resident Evil 6 since I saw some fellow gay guys going on about muscle-bound Chris Redfield and his homo-erotic relationship with his second-in-command, Piers Nivans - there's even fanfiction / fanart about it (you know, the usual).

But I don't know, I'm not usually a zombie shooter type of guy, and the game got pretty middling reviews.

This is what you're reduced to as a gay gamer who wants a bit of plot and romance - looking to random games to scratch an itch. I guess that's why I'm grateful for Bioware's stuff, because even if the games aren't perfect, they're usually pretty satisfying even aside from their gay romances.

R296, good luck with your Mass Effect playthrough - I can never bring myself to skip sidequests because I obsess about missing content down the line, though it must be nice to save time if you've already finished the games. Though I think Mass Effect 2 is a bit less forgiving about sidequests - like, I think several of your squadmates / crew die in the final mission if you haven't done their sidequests, and then you won't be able to party with them on the Citadel in ME3...

by Anonymousreply 297February 17, 2015 6:11 AM

R297, thanks for the warning. I'll absolutely do all the major sidequests in ME2 but there's no way I'm going to mine all the planets dry. That's just fucking tedious. Grinding at its worst.

Unfortunately when I imported my Shep from ME1 my earlier ME2 achievements were not included, so I'm basically playing as a newbie (although obviously I did get loads of minerals and some other little achievements from ME1). But that's fine, I'm enjoying it all. The fights were way too easy in ME1 replay. I basically just had to shoot the enemy for a second or two and they died.

ME1 and ME2 are just appetizers for ME3 which is the experience I'm really waiting for. I've played it through once before, and I had to do it without importing a character from ME1/ME2 since I had killed Kaidan in ME1. Now I'm doing it right and will play with same Shep through the whole trilogy. I already bought 4 DLC's few days ago (that I hadn't played before) so I'll have new content next week when I finish ME2 and finally get to have my Shep romance Kaidan again.

BTW, Sony just announced their whole PS4 game lineup for 2015. No Mass Effect 4 yet. I mean I knew it probably wouldn't be ready this year but still it would've been awesome to have it drop this Christmas.

And R297, I get what you mean with trying to find gay content in the games. It's bloody annoying how little gay stuff there is and that truly is a reason to love Bioware. I hope they deliver gay romance once again with Mass Effect 4. I'm slightly nervous that the earlier Mass Effect boss left the production but hopefully he wasn't the driving force behind the gay stuff.

[R297] Resident Evil 6's terrible,especial CAMERA.

by Anonymousreply 299February 18, 2015 2:04 AM

I finished Mass Effect 2 last night. I thought I hadn't spend that much time playing it this last week but the timer says 40 hrs. Oops. I did all the major sidequests and had all my team members stay alive in the final battle. Didn't have enough minerals to get the max points after import to ME3 which is a shame but what can you do.

I had to jump straight into ME3 and already played it for 3 hours. It was just so lovely to have Shep and Kaidan together once again.

It's sick how emotional this game makes me feel. Especially that bloody piano in the hospital scene below. I had tears in my eyes. The last time I played the game my uncle was dying. He wasn't close to me but I witnessed the grief my father was going through and in a way all of that got mixed up with ME3's dark mood. ME3 let me go through the grief I was feeling.

I just listened to a podcast where the voice actor of Kaidan (Raphael Sbarge) was interviewed. He told a story about a woman who had written a letter to him where she said her son had killed himself and playing Mass Effect 3 was a way for her to cope with it all. I understand it completely. This game has something so profoundly sad and dark about it, but at the same time hope in the way Shepard soldiers on when fighting the impossible fight, that it just touches you in ways games usually don't.

To me Shep and Kaidan are up there with Jack & Ennis or Maurice & Scudder. As a media game storytelling is not as smooth as the movies but the interaction makes it somehow count a bit more in some ways.

I picked up "Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare" on sale... haven't played a CoD game in ages. And I have to say, I'm not much of a fan. Overly scripted, very "on rails", and some of the missions are just tedious, dying over and over until I can figure out what the fuck I'm supposed to be doing.

by Anonymousreply 301February 22, 2015 8:22 AM

R300, I felt a little down after I finished ME3 (including all available DLC) because I'd spent so long in that universe, and it hit me that there were no further adventures to go on with those characters. I'm looking forward to ME4 next year, but it'll be a completely new cast and story.

I ended up looking for ME fan-fiction online (which I pretty much never do for video games) because I felt a need to spend a little more time with the characters, especially after the ending. There are actually some decent works out there; I think Kaidan / male Shepard is one of the most popular pairings (behind only Garrus and female Shepard).

That piano piece that plays in the romance scenes is called "I Was Lost Without You"; you should check out the soundtrack if you like the music. There are a lot of other great pieces (like the theme that plays over your last conversation with Anderson, or the piano piece that plays over the ending in the Extended Cut) - I think the soundtrack is one of the highlights of ME3, probably the strongest of the series.

I finished beating Dragon Age Inquisition in Nightmare mode as an archer male elf. I romanced Iron Bull, there were some pretty funny scenes. Now playing Devil May Cry 4, which I've have sitting around forever but never got around to playing. There isn't a whole lot out there right now..

by Anonymousreply 305February 24, 2015 9:34 PM

R304, you sound boring.

by Anonymousreply 306February 25, 2015 12:42 AM

I finished Mass Effect 3 couple of days ago. This time Shepard lived in the end which was great. The emotional impact of the game wasn't of course as big as the first time I played it but I enjoyed the ME world so much once again.

I did now play the 4 DLC's for the first time and I enjoyed them all except maybe for the party part of the Citadel. I tried to play it in the right moment, just before the endgame but I managed to fuck it up somehow and missed Kaidan having dinner with my Shep. I understand the DLC was maybe supposed to be played after the game was finished since it was a sort of a goodbye to the crew but I wanted the end to be the big London fight and the Catalyst. Probably a wrong move. The party messed up the narrative a bit which is a shame.

Now I need to game some more to keep up the escape from reality but don't know where to go next. After having spend so much time playing Dragon Age: Inquisition and the Mass Effect trilogy I have a need to find something as fulfilling as those were, but obviously you don't find games like that too easily. Especially if you want gay content.

There's nothing on PS4 out at the moment I like that much so I guess it's back to PS3. I thought maybe replaying Deus Ex: Human Revolution but I'm scared I don't like it anymore. Adam Jensen is super hot but it's not enough. I guess I have to keep looking.

by Anonymousreply 307March 4, 2015 5:11 PM

I sort of wanted to play some kind of sci-fi techno thriller after Mass Effect trilogy but couldn't find anything I really wanted. So I ended up rejoining PS Plus since Sherlock Holmes: Crimes and Punishments is one of March's free games at PS3. Funnily enough the game is still full price on PS4.

Maybe it's good to travel back in time for a change. I've never played any Sherlock games but judging from the gameplay videos this one seems to have nice atmosphere. I'm expecting a comforting experience.

I picked up "Sniper V2" for free on Xbox Games with Gold last month, and it's pretty fun... it's a world-war 2 stealth sniper 3rd person shooter. It's pretty intense actually.

by Anonymousreply 309March 8, 2015 3:31 AM

Bought the season pass for resident evil revelations 2, I'm on the 3rd episode. It's pretty much the best resident evil since re4.

by Anonymousreply 310March 12, 2015 9:23 AM

Bloody hell, I can't seem to find good game to play after the Mass Effect trilogy and Dragon Age: Inquisition. I spent few hours with Sherlock Holmes: Crimes and Punishments but it's not exactly the best game out there. I sort of enjoy it in little bits but in the end the playing is quite tedious. I find the writing lazy and the graphics not that great. But I must say I haven't played games like this a lot so I guess it's partly my own fault for expecting something that wasn't suppposed to be there in the first place.

After getting tired of Sherlock I finally bought L.A. Noire since I've read good things about it but well, I'm not sure what to think of it yet. I've played it for couple of hours and the mood itself is excellent, especially the music, but I can't say the game play itself is that exciting. The graphics seem clumsy and old.

I'm not finding any of the new games that interesting. I thought The Witcher 3 might be close to Dragon Age but I saw gameplay video at IGN and didn't really like it, not that I didn't have my doubts about it before that already. At the moment I'm seriously considering replaying Dragon Age: Inquisition but I already spent 120 hours on it before Christmas and just thinking about jumping back so soon makes me feel weird. I don't enjoy the grinding aspect of the game but I guess I could leave sidequesting to minimum. I know Bioware is still probably crashing bugs but boy do I wish they'd bring out DLCs already. Some Bioware dude confirmed on his Twitter in the beginning of February that they are working on a DLC but supposedly it's still quite far away.

I just need a good alternate reality to go to after work. I'm actually thinking of buying the Resident Evil Revelations 2 as well, like R310, but survival/zombie horror is not really my thing. I still got The Last of Us Remastered waiting for me on my PS4. I don't know why it is so hard to get into it.

by Anonymousreply 311March 15, 2015 10:21 PM

I finally decided to revisit Deus Ex: Human Revolution after few years and I'm completely loving the experience. The minute I heard its music I fell in love again. I had compeletely forgotten how haunting the theme music is. Thankfully I hadn't bought the Missing Link dlc on the first playthrough so now there'll be some new content in the game.

by Anonymousreply 312March 19, 2015 3:48 PM

So apparently we are now able to post in old threads once again.

I bought South Park Stick of Truth from the Playstation Store sale. I've played it for 30 mins and must say I have hard time getting into it. It basically feels like a game for the kids but I suppose things will start to pick up soon.

by Anonymousreply 313April 2, 2015 1:51 PM

Just finished Sniper Elite V2 (which I got free on Xbox Games with Gold)... and what a great game that was. Very tense, fun, challenging, ... gonna actually pay for some DLC and even will likely get Sniper Elite 3 on Xbox One.

by Anonymousreply 314April 2, 2015 2:05 PM

R313, South Park Stick of Truth is one of the funniest games I have ever played. It's awesome.

But you kind of have to be a fan of the show.

by Anonymousreply 315April 2, 2015 2:05 PM

I'm doing a replay of Dragon Age: Inquisition with a different class on Nightmare difficulty. I agree there really isn't much out there to be excited about at the moment, and it seems like so many of the games I was looking forward to this year have been delayed into 2016 (Zelda Wii U being delayed especially was disappointing).

At the moment the only game I'm really anticipating is Xenoblade Chronicles X for Wii U; besides that nothing's really on my radar.

by Anonymousreply 316April 2, 2015 3:47 PM

I bought Stick of Truth during the $5 PSN sale too…played it up until I had to start with the lame battles and put it down.

My PS4 continues to collect dust.

by Anonymousreply 317April 2, 2015 4:10 PM

The battles are fun! The best one is when you have to fight while dodging your dad's ballsack.

The game is the only game I've ever had to just put the controller down for a bit because I was laughing so hard I couldn't play.

by Anonymousreply 318April 3, 2015 1:00 AM

I played South Park a bit more and yeah I can see why people like it. You practically feel like you're in the the show. I'm still having some trouble with the constrained movement in the game after having been playing games that have real 3D space to move in. And of course I am fan of the show R315, otherwise I wouldn't have bought the game. Or maybe I should say I was fan of the show but you know I started watching it 17 years ago. That was LONG time ago.

The show hasn't really changed that much during the years which is a blessing and a curse at the same time. Some things in the game, like Al Gore hiding in the bushes, feels old and completely unfunny. On the other hand talking to Kenny's mom and seeing the disgusting shag they live in still brings smile to my face.

I've only watched few new episodes of the show in the past 10 years so the game is practically a return after a long time to that world. I guess my problem is that I see loads of stuff that made the show boring and which in the end made me stop watching it. But I'm sure I'm sucked in more and more into that world when I just keep playing.

by Anonymousreply 319April 3, 2015 1:54 AM

There are TONS of references from the last 10 years though.

And there's a whole Big Gay Al bit.

Lots of hidden easter-eggs too.

by Anonymousreply 320April 3, 2015 2:21 AM

Jus bought "The Handsome Collection" on Xbox One, and have transferred all my characters from Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel over...

Gives the entire Borderlands franchise a breath of fresh air on next-gen! Just wish they'd port the original over.

by Anonymousreply 321April 3, 2015 6:11 PM

Just finished 'The Last of Us' and it's everything it was said to be (unlike the vastly overrated Bioshock Infinite), but I sure wouldn't recommend it to anyone who's going through a rough patch in life. That game was GRIM.

Going to play of few of the alternate beginnings in 'Dragon age: Origins,' then I'll finally begin 'Mass Effect' (obviously I'm off of work this week) l get to see what all the fuss is about. Any advice will be gratefully accepted.

by Anonymousreply 322April 8, 2015 9:50 PM

R322, I really liked the Last of Us and the game's story / atmosphere, but honestly graphics and gameplay-wise sometimes it felt a bit like a re-skinned Uncharted (which isn't necessarily a bad thing). But definitely a quality game.

And Dragon Age: Origins and Mass Effect are some of my favorites. If you're playing them on PC I highly suggest looking into some mods, especially for DA:O - there are some great ones that improve the combat and game appearance.

by Anonymousreply 323April 8, 2015 9:58 PM

Finished Sniper Elite 2 on Xbox 360, and liked it so much, I just bought and started Sniper Elite 3 on Xbox One.

by Anonymousreply 324April 9, 2015 12:58 AM

I play the Maya Angelou video Game

by Anonymousreply 325April 9, 2015 1:02 AM

R322, some Mass Effect trilogy advice that is spoilerish but if you want the best gay romance experience (at least in my eyes) you probably need to know it. So read at your own risk. The first time I played the trilogy I played it without reading anything about it which messed up the experience in ME3 for me and I wish I'd known what I write below. Sorry, loads of text.

If you play without mods (e.g. on PS3) and want the best ending for ME3 you need to play through the whole trilogy with importing your character from ME1 to ME2 and then from ME2 to ME3. You need to do that to get enough EMS (Effective Military Strength) points which largely define the ending of ME3 and the whole trilogy storyline. Importing also helps you hugely in ME2 and ME3 because you import some of the achievements.

The best gay romance for male Shepard (meaning you the player) is Kaidan, the lovable Canadian hunk. Without mods (which are pc only to my knowledge) the only gay romance will be happening in ME3. There will be a choice to be made in the end of ME1 where you can either save or kill Kaidan. You have to save him if you want to romance him in ME3 since this is one of the storyline choices that you import into ME2/ME3. On my first playthrough I killed him in ME1 and because of that I had to play ME3 without the import from ME2 to get the Kaidan romance which meant I couldn't have the perfect ending since it was pretty much impossible to get enough EMS points. The only way to have gay romance in ME1 is on pc with unofficial mods. No idea if there are mods for Xbox, though, since I'm a Playstation guy.

I'm not sure if you've read about the controversy surrounding the ending of ME3 but it was huge. I wasn't even following gaming world at the time but I remember the uproar. Gamers were hugely disappointed of the ending when they didn't get the so called perfect ending, or actually loads of them hated any ending there was. Bioware had to release an update that made it easier to get the perfect ending and at least on PS3 you can still decide whether to install it or not. It's called the Extended Cut. If I remember correctly without the update you had to get 5000 EMS points to get the perfect ending but the update dropped it to 4000.

This is my personal advice. I'm sure there's some advice about the general game play but with the abilities and the guns there are so many choices that you must google info about them if you want to know more. There is grinding aspect to the mining of the minerals and such but it's not too bad, although tbh on my second playthrough I skipped the most of it in ME1. Driving around on mostly empty planets just isn't my thing. ME1 certainly shows its age on those graphics.

by Anonymousreply 326April 9, 2015 2:02 AM

Biggest game news for a long time to me is the reveal of Deus Ex: Mankind Divided, the sequel to Human Revolution. I'm currently in the middle of replaying Human Revolution so seeing this trailer makes me completely hard. No idea of the release date but Square Enix is taking pre-orders already so I'm hoping for Summer release.

Thanks for the warning. I'm not completely opposed to grinding, did enough in Skyrim trying to get enchanting to 100, but I need to have some motivation. Guess I'll skip the driving too.

Sadly, I do not have a gaming computer. Money and space are issues t present, but I've been thinking about it for a while, mostly because of all the stories about Skyrim mods (after playing two openings for DA:O, I actually started another character on Skyrim; my eighth, I think). Someday...
I just bought and started Sniper Elite 3 on Xbox One

This thread convinced me to buy Sniper Elite for my PS4

by Anonymousreply 328April 10, 2015 12:45 AM

In gay-related news: apparently Mortal Kombat X features a gay character, a first for the series (and for fighting games in general?) The reveal is "subtle" and it went over a lot of gamers' heads, but one of the developers confirmed he's meant to be gay.

The Mortal Kombat series really isn't my type of game (I always rolled my eyes at the fatalities), but it's always cool when a developer includes gay characters in a major mainstream release, especially in a genre like fighting games.

Gong through Play-Through 2 ("True Vault Hunter Mode") on Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel with a friend, co-op play. Love that game.

Also playing through Sniper Elite III ... it's pretty different from Sniper Elite 2 (in many good ways and a few bad ones), but the biggest thing about it is just how huge each mission is. I think it took me nearly 8 hours of game play to get through mission 3 (spread out over a week).

by Anonymousreply 330April 18, 2015 4:24 PM

Just finished the last of us, my god the entire game is so cliche. Ellie is an heinous little twat, the ending was the only good thing. The gameplay was ass. Sadly I bought it off psn so can't get my money back.

by Anonymousreply 331April 18, 2015 5:06 PM

I never pay more than $5 for a digital game that I can't resell.

by Anonymousreply 332April 18, 2015 5:10 PM

I've been replaying Xenoblade Chronicles on the New 3dS XL. Probabably the best JRPG I've ever played . I never finished the original on the Wii since there is so many things to do in the game.

by Anonymousreply 333April 18, 2015 5:11 PM

Anyone play Cities: Skylines? I'm enjoying it so far, especially after the dismal release of SimCity 5. The steam workshop provides enough extra content like game mods, maps and buildings to really make each city unique too.

by Anonymousreply 334April 18, 2015 5:22 PM

Borderland the Pre-sequel is not only a super -fun game, it's funny as hell.

by Anonymousreply 335April 18, 2015 5:22 PM

R333, I loved that game - seriously one of the best JRPGs; I have to think back to the SNES / PS1 days to think of a JRPG I enjoyed as much.

The sequel, Xenoblade Chronicles X, is releasing in two weeks in Japan for the Wii U, hopefully coming out in the US / Europe later this year. It's more sci-fi oriented (fighting robots), but it looks incredible and is supposedly much bigger than the original.

I'm doing another playthrough of Dragon Age: Inquisition and tried the male romance with Iron Bull and... I just couldn't. I was literally cringing at the screen with some of the dialogue, which sounded like it came out of some bad Fifty Shades fan-fiction.

I had to reload to an earlier save and decided to hold off on a romance - maybe I'll do a romance with Dorian again, or even try to romance a woman(!) That's how bad the Iron Bull thing was for me.

Other than that, Mario Kart 8 had its second DLC pack come out this week, and it's pretty freaking amazing. Whatever other troubles Nintendo may be having, they still know how to put out some amazing high-quality, polished, fun games - some of the tracks were jaw-droppingly great. Haven't tried out the new 200cc speed mode though; I can barely handle 150cc.

by Anonymousreply 337April 25, 2015 4:05 PM

On Dragon Age Inquisition, I wanted to play as a male but ended up playing as a female to bed Cullen. Even his romance is pretty meh.

In Dragon Age, the male/male relationships are always given to characters that aren't the 'hot' guy. In Origins, no Alistair - just Zevran. Now in Inquisition, no Cullen just Dorian or Iron Bull.

At least in Mass Effect we got Kaidan.

by Anonymousreply 338April 25, 2015 5:01 PM

I romanced Dorian first and thought he was pretty hot, and his romance was sweet. There were some moments in his plot that were a bit cliche, but I was able to overlook them. I was just trying to romance someone different this time around.

I was thinking of doing a play-through for Cullen at some point, but doesn't a lot of his romance focus on his lyrium addiction / thinly-veiled metaphor for being a recovering drug addict? Don't know how much that interests me.

Can someone please explain twitch.tv to me? I'm watching a guy play GTAV on there right now and people are giving him money. WHY? Why would anyone donate money to watch someone play video games? I'm clearly missing something here.

by Anonymousreply 340April 30, 2015 3:01 AM

R340, I'm not quite sure why people give money to people playing on twitch but it's fascinating sometimes to watch other people play games. I mostly do it on PS4 if I'm interested to see how others play certain games or want to see what some new game looks like. The one playing is sort of performing to the viewers and the top ones might be quite funny. There is communal feel to it since the viewers interact with the player through chat and sometimes appearing on his/her game play.

I'm in between games myself and I'm a bit anxious to find some great big new one. Of course in two days me and other PS-players will get our hands on Dragon Age: Inquisition's first DLC 'Jaws of Hakkon' but apparently it's only about 10 hour run.

I'm sort of interested in Witcher 3 but I'm not happy about the homophobia that was in Witcher 2. I didn't play it but I've read of it. It doesn't seem to bother all gaymers but I don't like the feel of supporting a game studio that's done homophobic stuff. Many gaymers don't seem to think it really was homophobic but what I've read of what happened in the game does sound rather homophobic.

FALLOUT 4 ANNOUNCED!!

I was so into Fallout 3 (and the same studio made Skyrim). This is going to be amazing... can't wait!

by Anonymousreply 342June 3, 2015 2:17 PM

UNCHARTED TRILOGY Remastered Edition announced for the PS4!

Uncharted is one of the best games I've played in the past 10 yrs. Never got to the sequels on the PS3 unfortunately (have been focusing on portable gaming).

The series is a system seller in my opinion and the only reason i'll pick up a PS4 later in the fall.

Looking forward to Fallout 4. I've just upgraded to an ASUS ROG 751-series laptop. Amazing machine for gaming, though it's taking me a while to get used to keyboard controls.

by Anonymousreply 344June 4, 2015 6:15 PM

Uncharted 2 is great, uncharted 3 is shit however. Lazy writing, bad plot, plot holes, shit level desigh etc. But it's worth it for just uncharted 2 at 60 fps.

by Anonymousreply 345June 4, 2015 6:25 PM

Playing Diablo III right now. Surprisingly fun on a console. I tried the PC version when it came out and it was BORING. But they've tweaked things for the console release and got rid of that awful real-money "auction house" idea, and now it's every bit as fun as Diablo 2 was (and I loved that game back in the day).

by Anonymousreply 346June 13, 2015 6:04 PM

I played Skyrim briefly but I got burnt out on it once I realized how long it would take to complete. I'd like to get into online gaming but I need a better computer first. Maybe we could start a Data Lounge gaming group. :)

by Anonymousreply 347June 13, 2015 6:33 PM

Skyrim was amazing, but does require a lot of effort to get any decent kind of completion rate. I think I managed a good 200 hours or so before moving on. I expect to pick it up again at some point and continue.

My hubby is a ESO fanatic. I believe he's about 4th or 5th in line for the throne at the moment for the yellow team, lol.

I will definitely be playing the new Fallout, but right now I'm still obsessing over Cities Skylines. It's the ultimate city builder game. After 20+ years playing SimCity, that's finally dead and buried. EA killed the Sim- franchise with greedy and shitty practices, but mostly it's due to the massive incompetence of Lucy Bradshaw at the helm. Why she still has a job, no one knows, but I suspect it's a diversity-allocation thing.

by Anonymousreply 348June 13, 2015 11:39 PM

Anyone here play Sims 4?

by Anonymousreply 349June 13, 2015 11:41 PM

No. It's too stripped down and unfinished. Instead of making new versions of The Sims better, they're consistently doing as little as possible and expecting users to buy a ton of DLC packages to fill in all the gaps. It's a prime example of EA's shitty practices.

by Anonymousreply 350June 14, 2015 12:04 AM

Yeah, I didn't bother upgrading to Sims 4 from 3, either. The lack of an open world is a dealbreaker for me, plus I just don't like how cartoony and low-poly it looks.

Fallout 4 looks amazing from the E3 footage. So excited for that one.

by Anonymousreply 351June 15, 2015 6:24 PM

I could never get into Fallout, I just didn't enjoy its feel. I'm waiting Dishonored 2 more since I enjoyed the first one although I can't say it really set me on fire. I'm more of a Mass Effect kind of a guy. IGN is predicting news or footage from Mass Effect 4 at E3. Hope it's true.

by Anonymousreply 352June 15, 2015 6:36 PM

So much good news announced today....

Not just Fallout 4, Doom, and Dishonored 2, but also a new South Park video game (sequel to the last one, sorta kinda).

And the announcement that the Xbox One will gain backwards compatibility with Xbox 360 was massive and unexpected... and very welcome. WOO!

by Anonymousreply 353June 16, 2015 12:39 AM

Well, Mass Effect: Andromeda and The Last Guardian certainly are exciting. Too bad Mass Effect is still 17 months away but well at least we got something. Last Guardian's bird-dog is so cute, huge little puppy.

I'm also intrigued by the new Hitman which is out this Christmas. I haven't played the earlier ones but I think I'll pick this one. After all being a hitman was one of my career dreams when I was younger.

by Anonymousreply 354June 16, 2015 6:30 AM

by Anonymousreply 355June 16, 2015 6:42 AM

Well it does look interesting. $20 for a short game might seem a bit steep but I guess it's more of a visual and sexual feast than a traditional game, or so I think. I'll probably pick it up myself at some point.

by Anonymousreply 356June 16, 2015 6:54 AM

Yeah, Xbox finally killed it at E3. Backward compatibility, custom controllers + button configurations, try before you buy gaming. All excellent steps forward. I might have to clear the dust off my XboxOne after all.

by Anonymousreply 357June 16, 2015 10:04 AM

Sony were all about appeasing nastolgic fans with Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Last Guardian and Shenmue. Microsoft made a dent with their free Backwards Compatibility announcement and Mod implementations in Xbox games. I must likely will get a PS4 now. The Uncharted trilogy/4 and Final Fantasy 7 remake put me over.

by Anonymousreply 358June 16, 2015 10:20 AM

I hear that Pong by Atari is going to be big!

by Anonymousreply 359June 16, 2015 11:29 AM

Sony finally brought Media Player to PS4. One of the supported formats is .mkv which many people thought would never happen on Sony platform. Unfortunately I tried Media Player on my PS4 and out of about 20 different .mp4 files Media Player only showed the ones that were downloaded from Youtube. So the codec support is extremely narrow. I'm not impressed. PS3 has no trouble playing those same files.

I'm jealous of XBone's backwards compatibility. PS4 will never get compatibility with PS3 games. Sony has crippled PS4 with the ridiculously bad media support and the nonexistent backwards compatibility. I'm totally regretting buying PS4 instead of XBone.

by Anonymousreply 360June 16, 2015 12:14 PM

Uh, you realize with PS Plus, that there are hundreds of PS3 games that you can play? They had backwards compatibility almost a full two years before Xbone, and Xbone's is STILL not coming out to til the holidays, and the list of "compatible" games will be highly edited. Wtf are you talking about, R360? I was just playing Skyrim on my PS4 yesterday.

by Anonymousreply 361June 16, 2015 12:22 PM

Uncharted 4 looks fucking amazing. Dying over Star Wars Battlefront. I will lose thousands of hours of my life to that game. I'm a little eh about Last Guardian, but Shadow of the Colossus was an incredible game, so...

Ubisoft, still trying to recover from their Watch Dogs debacle, was careful to show that The Division has lost a lot of the fidelity and visual beauty that it had in its initial trailer last year. Manage those expectations. Still, it looked pretty sick. Psyched over Batman next week. A little disappointed that there has been no Kingdom Hearts, maybe later this week?

by Anonymousreply 362June 16, 2015 12:27 PM

R361, what are you talking about? You can't play PS3 games with PS4 unless they've been remastered to PS4. Is it the same situation with XBone? I assumed you can play XB360 games with XBone without any tinkering from Microsoft or the game houses but if that's not the case then it seems silly.

by Anonymousreply 363June 16, 2015 12:28 PM

Not quite. I believe only 100 or so XB360 titles will be available when backward compatibility launches. All their games require some tinkering to the code or something like that. I think you load a disc in the drive, and it downloads the necessary conversion content.

by Anonymousreply 364June 16, 2015 12:33 PM

No, R364, they were very explicit that there is no tinkering to the game code required by any developer.

It's a licensing thing. They need to get approval from each of the author/publishers to make the game available. Over a hundred games will be available at launch, with a hundred or hundreds more expected over the next year.

If the publisher/author is out of business or something, you may be out of luck. There may also be some additional negotiations, or the author/publisher just may not approve it for whatever reason.

by Anonymousreply 365June 16, 2015 12:53 PM

R360 is right. R361 is spinning and making excuses.

by Anonymousreply 366June 16, 2015 12:55 PM

R360 is WRONG.

Its called Playstation Now, it's been in place since January 2014, and it's a cloud based service that streams PS3 games onto PS4 and Vita. There are over 200 games.

Deal with it, Microsoft shill.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 367June 16, 2015 12:58 PM

And it's lame, and it's not running the games NATIVELY on your actual PS4 and there are lag and other issues and give it up dude.

by Anonymousreply 368June 16, 2015 1:05 PM

R367 = Sony shill, projecting

by Anonymousreply 369June 16, 2015 1:07 PM

Quoting from R367's link, let's see if you can spot the main differences:
PlayStation Now (officially abbreviated as PS Now) is a cloud gaming service that allows users to [bold]pay for access to a selection of original PlayStation 3 titles on either a per-game basis or via a subscription[/bold]

Xbox 360 Backwards Compatibility on the Xbox One runs natively (not "in the cloud" with all the networking issues and lag involved), and is completely FREE.

Any games you electronically downloaded at are in your Xbox collection will simply start appearing in your Xbox One collection. For games on disc, you just put in the disc and it'll download to the HD in the Xbox One and you can start playing.

So yeah. Sonly PS4 is totally pwned on this issue now.

by Anonymousreply 370June 16, 2015 1:10 PM

Square Enix is having its presentation right now at E3. You can watch live stream e.g. at IGN. Hopefully there's new stuff about the new Deus Ex.

by Anonymousreply 371June 16, 2015 5:15 PM

Hmm, unfortunately the new 'game play' trailer of Deus Ex: Mankind Divided left me a bit cold but the hot Agent 47 from new Hitman almost gave me a boner with that tight body. Too bad he seems to be bulgeless.

by Anonymousreply 372June 16, 2015 6:17 PM

The open-world Tom Clancy game (Wildlands) looks fascinating. I hope it's as good as it seems.

by Anonymousreply 373June 17, 2015 12:42 AM

There's apparently going to be a Skyrim 2.

by Anonymousreply 374June 17, 2015 1:57 PM

As far as I've seen, there has bee absolutely no word about that.

But I'm certain we can expect an Elder Scrolls VI at some point.

by Anonymousreply 375June 17, 2015 2:00 PM

It's just a rumor at this point.

by Anonymousreply 376June 17, 2015 2:03 PM

Skyrim 2? Lol! I'm sure it's just a bad joke.

The most likely one I've heard is the next Elder Scrolls is going to be set in Black Marsh, home of the Argonians.

Take each rumor with a grain of salt.

The latest Elder Scrolls is Tamriel online, and it looks pretty terrible. I wouldn't put a sequel to Skyrim outside the realm of possibility. It's by far their most successful game. I wouldn't imagine it would be the next in the series though.

Anyone going to play The Last Guardian if it ever comes out?

by Anonymousreply 379June 18, 2015 11:30 PM

R379, yeah sure if it's not a complete mess. The bird-dog seems very sweet and personally I'm interested to see how real and alive it will seem in the game. The graphics weren't really that great on E3 demo but it's good to know it now so the expectations don't get too high. And with the bird-dog it's the game mechanics that count, not necessarily how sharp the textures and the 3D models are.

I actually bought Ico and Shadow of Colossus months ago but I've only managed to play Ico for half an hour since I've been more into AAA games. I guess I have a reason now to finish the games before this one comes out. And I'm pretty sure it will come out. Or who the hell knows. The news surrounding it the past couple of weeks have at least been promising. I doubt Sony would've done the big reveal at E3 if the project was in serious trouble. Although didn't the game get a new boss a week ago... I only noticed now that the game director Fumito Ueda has apparently said after the keynote that they 'hope to release in 2016'. Well, we'll see.

Sims 4 is half off this weekend. Should I buy?

by Anonymousreply 381June 19, 2015 7:33 PM

Microsoft Xbox One pwned the E3 show.

by Anonymousreply 382June 19, 2015 11:57 PM

I just started playing Sleeping Dogs Definitive Edition on PS4 and I'm liking it. Game's dirt cheap now. Being part of an Asian street gang as an undercover cop is fun. Lots of eye candy with buff Asian hunks but sadly not much bulging in the pants. All game houses should have a bulge expert giving the characters a lil bit of dirty sexiness.

I was waiting to play Jaws of Hakkon for DA:I but I ended up getting so pissed off at Bioware/EA for the two month exclusivity XBone had that I ended up skipping the dlc for now. I'll wait until the end of the year when it'll be on sale or when I'll replay the whole game. I got really angry for the stunt Bioware/EA pulled for a bloody dlc. I get these exclusive things with games but with Jaws of Hakkon it just seemed fucking silly since the DA:I itself had no exlusivity. It felt like Bioware/EA was giving middle finger to us who paid the full price for DA:I when it came out and had been waiting for a dlc.

by Anonymousreply 383June 24, 2015 11:10 AM

Inquisition is shit, repetitive and full of fetch quests. Witcher 3 is the rpg to play. Getting Fallout 4 and rise of the Tomb raider, not much else interests me.

by Anonymousreply 384June 24, 2015 11:25 AM

Is there any gay content in Witcher 3?

by Anonymousreply 385June 24, 2015 12:48 PM

R385 There's a cross dressing looney elf. That's about it.

by Anonymousreply 386June 25, 2015 5:52 AM

Witcher 3 has no gay content, so for me, no, it isn't the rpg to play.

by Anonymousreply 387June 25, 2015 7:59 AM

Ok, so no real gay stuff in Witcher 3. I probably wouldn't care but I've read enough of Witcher 2's possible homophobia to question the motives of the Polish studio. I know some gay players don't think the asshole gay character is really homophobic but some do, and to me it sounded homophobic as hell. Had there been positive gay characters, or you know [italic]normal[/italic] gay characters, in Witcher 3 I could've forgiven the studio but obviously they don't care about the gays so I won't care about them.

Guys at reddit/gaymers seem to really love Witcher 3 but I guess I'll skip the game.

by Anonymousreply 388June 25, 2015 11:15 PM

I found a DLC, Arrival, for Mass Effect 2 at Playstation Store sale I hadn't notice before and I'm now playing it. For me Commander Shepard is absolutely the most important character in any of the games I've ever played so it's nice to return to his company for a couple of hours. I replayed the trilogy few months ago so I won't be doing it for a long time but it was a nice surprise to find unplayed content. I thought my version of ME2 had all the DLCs in it but I was wrong.

ME4 is still over a year away and I'm slightly worried we won't be getting a character as awesome as Shepard is. We need a new Kaidan as well for him.

by Anonymousreply 389July 15, 2015 6:15 PM

I just finished the final DLC Trespasser for Dragon Age Inquisition. It was a nice enough ending for such a massive game. I spent 172 hours playing it during the last year and I can honestly say I don't want to ever play it again. Too much headless running around and loads of bugs. Still, it's a gorgeous and beautiful game with breathtaking visuals. I will certainly be buying the next Dragon Age as well, if and when they'll make another one.

I can't say I'm too wild about any of the new games being released in the near future but I guess Fallout 4 is the only one I'm considering buying this year. I tried playing some Fallout years ago but couldn't get into it so I'm worried I won't be liking the new one either. I'll probably wait for the reviews to find out if it's really as great as it is said to be.

Deux Ex: Mankind Divided doesn't come out until March so I guess it's time to finish all the games I've started but never finished.

by Anonymousreply 390October 25, 2015 10:36 PM

I've been playing RPGs since I was 6. I started with Final Fantasy IV (released as 2 in the US) and went from there. I love playing all the Final Fantasies, Pokemon, Chrono Trigger/Cross, Xenogears, etc. Basically if it's a Japanese RPG, I'm down. Oh and Ni No Kuni.

by Anonymousreply 391October 25, 2015 11:07 PM

Mass Effect Andromeda delayed to 2017. Fuck.

by Anonymousreply 392March 3, 2016 9:26 AM

Borderlands: The Handsome Collection was under €20 so I picked it up. I'm few hours in and I'm totally loving it. I hated the faux-cartooney graphics in all the trailers I saw but now that I see them in action I'm totally sold. The writing is hilarious, as is the awesome voice work. The gameplay itself is at the same time deliciously light and nicely nasty and violent. This game, actually I'm still playing Borderlands 2, is giving me a very satisfying feeling I haven't felt in a long time while playing.

I'd been waiting to get a nice big game to jump into and after being totally disappointed in Fallout 4 it seems I've found a place where to spend the next 100+ gaming hours. It might even carry me to Deus Ex: Mankind Divided which will be out in 3 months.

I thought about buying Uncharted 4 but I tried a demo from an earlier game and didn't really care about it at all.

by Anonymousreply 393May 11, 2016 3:48 PM

Five weeks until Deus Ex: Mankind Divided comes out. Yay. It's certainly the game I'm the most excited about this year but I can't wait to play Watch Dogs 2 and Dishonored 2 as well. Then obviously in early spring it's all about Mass Effect: Andromeda. That game's better be gorgeous in every way.

Mankind Divided was delayed a couple of times but I just watched a developer say it will come out on August 23rd so I can finally start getting excited.

by Anonymousreply 394July 18, 2016 5:14 PM

Four days until Deus Ex: Mankind Divided comes out. AND it's getting great reviews. 85 at Metacritic and 92 at IGN. I couldn't be happier. The one thing bothering reviewers is that the story is not as strong as it was in Human Revolution, which is a shame.

Who gives a fuck about stories in a video game? If I wanted a storyline, I'd watch a movie.

by Anonymousreply 397August 19, 2016 10:50 PM

R397, every game has some kind of story, even the most simple ones. Huge role playing games can have emotional impact that rivals that of a movie. Yes you can play games mostly for the technical pleasure but it's the story created by the characters, objects, environments etc. that create the mood of the gameplay.

I played Dragon Age Inquisition close to 200 hours. There's no way I could've taken all the grinding without a good enough story that kept me going. I loved Watch Dogs and even if the main story wasn't the most original or really anything special it still was enough to make it all work. Every time you play a game as a character you jump into their shoes and play and live their story. It doesn't have to be an RPG. Even in a mindless FPS like Unreal Tournament the story is still there. Everything that happens in the game is part of the story.

by Anonymousreply 398August 20, 2016 1:34 AM

I've played hundreds of video games in my lifetime and I couldn't tell you one of the storylines…I completely tune them out. They get in the way of the gameplay as far as I'm concerned. That's why I love Nintendo--they keep that shit to an absolute minimum and just let you PLAY. Any time the controls are taken away from the player (cut scenes) it's a bad thing IMO.

by Anonymousreply 399August 20, 2016 1:41 AM

R399, thankfully there are more than enough different kinds of games for people like you and for people like me. I'm a happy camper currently since after a dry spell of great story driven games (that I find interesting) there are now multiple coming out in the next few months. Deus Ex in a few days, Mafia III in October, Dishonored 2 in November and Watch Dogs 2 a few days after that. And then there's Mass Effect 4 hopefully coming in Q1 2017.

I'm still not sure about buying The Last Guardian (October) and Final Fantasy XV (November) but I'm curious about them.

by Anonymousreply 400August 20, 2016 2:20 AM

Really enjoying Just Cause 3

I've put 4 days into it so far (working my way through all the DLC now)... and by that I don't mean I started playing four days ago, but that I've played this game for nearly 100 hours.

by Anonymousreply 401August 20, 2016 5:11 AM

Does Microsoft Solitaire count? Using standard timing, I have a high score of 5090.

by Anonymousreply 402August 20, 2016 6:32 AM

R402, my mom loves playing Solitaire Forever. It has multiple versions of solitaire, although not all are available in the free version. Still, it's a step-up from Microsoft Solitaire, although obviously if you're happy with it everything's already alright.

New Fallout 4 DLC next week! The final one!

by Anonymousreply 405August 20, 2016 11:35 PM

A few hours of Deus Ex behind. Like with Human Revolution I'm loving the atmosphere with all the futuristic tech. You can play Deus Ex without killing anyone and I notice I naturally gravitate towards only putting the baddies to sleep even if I usually have no trouble killing in games. Still not sure if I'll play the whole game without killing anyone, though. I'm playing with the hardest difficulty and it's way more complicated to play when you can't just kill everyone.

Main character Adam Jensen reminds me of an old (straight) buddy I haven't seen in years. Last night I dreamed of him.

JUST finished the final DLC for Just Cause 3... aaaaand, after more than 120 hours in the game, I'm done.

Totally worth it. Great game (if a bit frustrating in spots)

by Anonymousreply 407August 26, 2016 2:19 PM

Obsessed with Overwatch right now. So fun.

by Anonymousreply 408August 26, 2016 2:26 PM

I haven't had too much spare time to play Deus Ex and I've realized there's no way in hell I'm going to search every nook and cranny for important loot. That's why I'm just in the middle of going through a game guide to find all Praxis kits and some nice weaponry. I actually wouldn't have done it but I realized I hadn't found my beloved stun gun from Human Revolution and decided to see where to find it. Well, that opened the floodgates and I decided to find all Praxis kits as well.

I've never really been a fan of cheat sheets but the reality is those times that I've played games without searching anything about the gameplay online I've noticed I've many times missed something important. My problem with Human Revolution was always that it was hard to achieve enough Praxis kits (i.e. ability updates) through a regular game play. Square Enix is now selling Praxis kits updates but honestly I'd rather cheat a bit than spend money buying them. It's possible I'll end buying some in any case.

I admit I'm feeling a bit disappointed about the game. I'm not feeling it as much as I wanted to. Which is the biggest reason I haven't played it more. The story feels muddy, and I'm not enjoying Prague (where most things happen) too much. It didn't help that IGN guys pointed out that the PS4 version (that I'm playing) has terrible graphis when compared with the PC version. STILL, I totally love Adam Jensen and I'll probably start liking the game more and more as I go on.

While I continue to believe that we are at the high point of the Gartner Hypecycle for VR, I have to admit that the release of Nvidia's Pascal 10 GPUs has me a little excited for the possibilities for games.

If nothing else, graphics quality is going to skyrocket on all games and we'll be able to play at a buttery 60+ fps.

by Anonymousreply 412September 3, 2016 8:39 PM

Great discounts in games during Black Friday but I ended up only pre-ordering Final Fantasy XV which is coming out next Tuesday. I've never even played Final Fantasy but there's something about the game that intrigues me. Wonder what could it be...? **

I've so far been quite disappointed with the games I've played after Dragon Age: Inquisition and I've been itching to find a new game to totally jump into. That said I'm not expecting FF:XV to fill that spot but I remain optimistic. It's really Mass Effect: Andromeda I'm waiting for but I'm scared it will never live up to my expectations. After Shepard and Kaidan I'm expecting something big, and I'm afraid I'm not getting it. So far the male lead in Andromeda seems bloody boring next to John Shepard.

I'm finally starting to accept the fact that I only really can like certain kinds of games. Apparently they need to be big triple-A games with beautiful graphics and good storytelling. And I do need the gay romance as well. Thankfully there's Bioware.

by Anonymousreply 414November 27, 2016 10:54 PM

Dishonored 2 is awesome.

by Anonymousreply 415November 27, 2016 11:44 PM

I've yet to start playing Final Fantasy XV but I did the suggested groundwork for the newbies and watched the two animes that apparently were made to sell the game. The first was the traditional anime series Final Fantasy: Brotherhood that's freely available on Youtube. It gives a bit of a backstory for the game's main man Prince Noctis and his traveling bros. Five 10 minutes episodes, quick to watch, and surprisingly enjoyable.

Then the feature film Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV. This was actually a huge production made pretty much the same way as Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. All 3D with almost real looking human characters. I enjoyed this a lot as well, and even shed a few tears in the end. The story apparently happens the same time as the game, and it's about Prince Noctis' father King Regis and the city of Insomnia where the prince is supposed to rule in the future.

Main character Nyx Ulric is so adorable. He's voiced by Aaron Paul but was modelled after a French model Johan Akon. They did a brilliant job with Nyx, unlike many of the characters who were just not quite real looking enough.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 416November 30, 2016 12:50 AM

And here's the guy Nyx was modeled after. He's gay and doesn't mind showing some skin, which is great. It was a total shame the film makers made Nyx practically totally bulgeless. They should've just used Johan's original.

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 417November 30, 2016 12:54 AM

They did give Nyx a shirtless scene. Imagine in a few years when the 3d models in virtual reality look and act this realistic? We create our own avatars and live our lives online looking whatever we want. Anyone who's ever been in Second Life realizes the potential.

Three years since the PS4 came out and I still only have one game (and it's a PS3 remake). Sad.

by Anonymousreply 419November 30, 2016 1:25 AM

R419, it's true that PS4 hasn't been getting tons of games but come on, there've been some nice triple-A titles and loads of indies you could've bought. And especially now when there are great deals on the earlier PS4 games you should be trying them out. I mean Dragon Age: Inquisition Game of the Year Edition is frequently on sale for something like $15.

Is your game The Last of Us, btw?

by Anonymousreply 420November 30, 2016 2:49 AM

I just finished uncharted 4 and have started red dead redemption-which is taking a little to get into for me. I put in Witcher 3 last night and the update was taking to long so I went to bed. I very excited for the new nes classic but won't pay more than its original price so that means next year. The game prior, that I completed, was the new ratchet and clank.

by Anonymousreply 421November 30, 2016 2:59 AM

I'm not into RPGs, R420. I'm old school I guess…I like platformers (of which there are like TWO for the PS4), racing games like Burnout (no Burnout's anywhere to be found on PS4) and SSX-type games (of which there are none currently--although Steep comes out this week, so crossing my fingers on that one even though Ubisoft is TRIPPING with their $80 price point for the all-inclusive version). Sony told us before the PS4 launched that it was 'easy to develop for', making me think there would be a plethora of games for this thing. NOT the case. I've honestly had more fun with my Wii U than my PS4.

And the game I have for PS4 is GTAV. I'm ashamed to say I've logged more than two months worth of GTAVO so far. I've tried playing a few other PS4 titles, but if they don't grab me within the first hour I lose interest and go right back to playing GTAV. Either I'm addicted to GTA or Rockstar has ruined all other current games for me. I played through TLOU on PS3 and remember thinking it wasn't a game I had any interest in playing over again so I've not bothered with the remake. I'm sure it'll be free on PS+ eventually anyway. Which Sony is now charging $60/year for LOL! Trippin'

by Anonymousreply 422November 30, 2016 8:59 AM

You shoulda gone with an Xbox One, R422.

by Anonymousreply 423November 30, 2016 2:13 PM

R422, I have a feeling the rise of the mobile gaming fucked up the consoles pretty bad. I use my PS4 as a blu-ray player and a video player more than I play games so I don't care about the lack of smaller games. Although when I play I can spend dozens of hours on a game; with Dragon Age: Inquisiton I spent close to 200. I'm totally into RPGs and I'm still wishing Bioware would bring out Mass Effect trilogy with updated graphics on PS4 before Andromeda arrives, although I doubt that'll happen.

BTW, are you sure about there are so few platformers for PS4? I could swear there are loads of indie platformers like Limbo in the store. I don't really care about them so I only scroll by them usually. And it seems gaming sites like IGN are always interviewing platformer developers for the new games that are about to come out.

I have a feeling Nintendo Switch is a console for you, if you're planning to try a new console that is. Xbox One did a great thing with their backward compatibility program and I've thought about buying it at some point. I'll probably wait for Project Scorpio, though.

by Anonymousreply 424November 30, 2016 8:10 PM

Oh and another thing I'm pissed at Sony for: We can't put our own goddamn MP3 files on the PS4 like we could on the PS3? Fuck off!

I wasn't aware the Xbox One is backwards compatible…it plays last gen games? I've never owned an Xbox and swore I never would. I got a bit jealous when Rare Replay was released for it, but then I read that those games aren't remastered.

I'll probably get a Switch, but I'm afraid it's going to be another flop like the Wii-U since it's going to be vastly underpowered compared to the other systems and therefore won't be getting the third party titles. And I have zero need/want for the portable aspect of it. I wish Nintendo would get their shit together. I'd go screaming back.

by Anonymousreply 425November 30, 2016 11:40 PM

Not all games are backward compatible but the backward compatibility program has at this point close to 300 games. Sony has their own lame attempt at bringing old games to PS4 but unlike with Sony you don't have to buy the games again on Xbox. ("If you own a supported game already, you do not have to pay anything to play it on Xbox One.") A great PR move from Microsoft. And they just recently announced the backward compatibility program will work on the upcoming Project Scorpio as well.

I agree that PS4 took a huge step back on PS4 when they removed certain entertainment features we had on PS3. I assume it was an attempt to sell Playstation TV but it was extremely annoying. Thankfully on PS4 you can still watch video files from an USB stick or external hard drive but like with the mp3 files you could save them on the hard disk on PS3.

Two weeks until Mass Effect: Andromeda comes out. After waiting for a new Mass Effect title for years it's now right behind the corner. It's unreal.

I loved the original trilogy and I'm afraid I'll end up being disappointed in Andromeda. Gay romance options seem quite limited at the moment although obviously not all facts are known yet. In any case they've revelead the main characters and it's clear we won't be having another Kaidan Alenko in Andromeda. Still, it's great the game will have gay romance options, as usual with Bioware, but if the rumors are correct the only other male main character will be straight, and in any case I don't even find him hot. I loved taking Kaidan on missions in Mass Effect 3 and it's very unfortunate if that's not the case this time.

Still, I'm hoping I end up loving Andromeda. I wasn't too wild about gay romance options in Dragon Age: Inquisition either but I still clocked in over 200 hours of playtime.

Also, the male version of Ryder is hot.

R431, he's cute but he's no Commander Shepard. That said I'm totally fine with him and I'll probably play with his stock look, like I always did with Shepard. Too bad even Bioware won't give these hunks decent bulges. I guess they're scared of straight boys getting upset. I'd love to see lifelike bulging going in the pants, even if it wasn't too noticeable. What can I say, I've always been a bulge guy.

Like I wrote in R429 I'm not convinced the gay romance options are that great. I'm now warming up to the other male lead, Liam, the black guy, after seeing him in action. They showed some game play on PAX East when the developers were on stage in Q&A, and it appears he's a sort of a comic relief, and since I love funny guys I was sold. It's a shame if he's not a love interest for Scott Ryder but judging by the journalists who've played Andromeda for a few hours Liam was a bro kind of a guy for Scott. You can find the hour long PAX East stream at least on IGN. They also have the first 15 minutes of the game up at IGN. I told myself I don't want any spoilers but I ended up watching it anyway, and I wasn't disappointed at all. The graphics look awesome.

I never play as a female so I don't personally care but the female Ryder sibling, Sara, looks weird. There's something wrong with her face and eyes and it makes her look like a muppet. Scott Ryder is thankfully way more lifelike.

by Anonymousreply 433March 13, 2017 3:30 AM

R433, just up the difficulty level. You can do that at any time, you know.

by Anonymousreply 434March 13, 2017 2:19 PM

Mass Effect: Andromeda is getting 'good, not great' reviews. Like I feared the male gay romancing options seem boring as hell. *sigh* Oh well. We get so very few gay options in games that you end up wanting them to be perfect, which they obviously rarely can be.

by Anonymousreply 435March 20, 2017 2:36 PM

I played ME:A for an hour and I just didn't like it, I mean almost at all. I realize this particular moment in my life is not the best time for playing games but I'm surprised how little I enjoyed returning to that world. The original trilogy always had a great story driving the action but Andromeda's premise is totally meh. And most of the characters are unappealing, and technically not even that well made. At this point the game's also buggy as hell, which wouldn't matter if everything else worked.

I hate to be a hater, especially knowing homophobic cunts hate Bioware for being so gay-inclusive, but Mass Effect trilogy was so good, and ME3 my favorite game ever. Life sucks.

by Anonymousreply 436March 24, 2017 7:25 AM

I used to spend a lot of time building houses on the Sims, Sims 2, and Sims 3. I have skipped Sims 4 though. I feel it it a step back from the Sims 3, because of the lack of item customization. The Sims 4 has much better looking characters, but it isn't a big step up in the graphics department like The Sims 3 was from the Sims 2.

Electronic arts could have gone with more realistic graphics, but chose to continue with the cartoon like graphics. With games like GTA5 on the market, it's unacceptable.

by Anonymousreply 437March 24, 2017 7:55 AM

Did you get off of the first planet? I struggled against it at first too, but when you finally get to the Nexus (Andromeda's version of the Citadel), it picks up.

There are a few things about it that I don't like. There's a REAAAAAALY strong libertarian streak running through the world, which, fine, but there's nothing that really counterbalances it.

by Anonymousreply 438March 24, 2017 8:44 AM

If you are interested in a gay video game, Robert Yang has some for you to play. Most of the games have fun premises. Unfortunately, some of his games have an undercurrent of self hate/deprecation, and the endings are um... interesting. One game is called Rinse and Repeat. Here is a Youtube video of the game being played.

In the game, you play a dark skinned character stalking a white guy at the gym. You wait in the locker room until he shows up. Once he appears, he ask you to wash various body parts and grades you on how well you are doing, leading to a... well, just watch and see for yourself. Ending scene starts at 12:06

R438, I stopped playing on the first planet. I'm sure I'll start enjoying the game at some point but the first hour was so disappointing I'm still feeling too sore about the whole thing. The game's only got 4.2 user score at Metacritic which is just terrible and shows I'm not the only one. Obviously Bioware has its haters, partly because of Mass Effect 3 and partly because homophobes can't stand the company, and it probably affects the score slightly.

by Anonymousreply 440March 24, 2017 9:25 AM

I've never liked the Mass Effect games. Too character and narrative driven for a video game. Never liked the graphics. I don't mind dialog but I need it to be as quick as possible and most of the time dialog choices drive me insane.

by Anonymousreply 441March 24, 2017 9:26 AM

R441, that's how Role Playing Games work. I love the original trilogy because it was so well written and had an awesome story. Sure not all talking was necessary but overall I liked the dialogue system.

It's also because, admittedly, some of the facial animations are really rough. It's more with NPCs than with the actual squadmates, but this naturally prompted GamerGate to send rape threats to a woman who worked in the BioWare motion capture studios, because they decided, for some reason, that she and she alone was responsible for them.

I don't know, it's definitely the weakest of the three, and I really dislike the Nomad and the control scheme. And since it lacks the threat of the annihilation of galactic civilization that the first had, it doesn't have the emotional heft that the trilogy had. There are also a few too many Easter eggs scattered throughout.

I don't know, I just find the idea of the Andromeda Initiative achingly sad.

Considering how big a refinement ME2 was over the first game, I would expect that here as well. I just wish there was less of an emphasis on crafting, because that's one of many things that I dislike about open world games. Like, FFXV is the first game of that type that I've found myself liking, and I think that's only because I really like the chemistry between Noctis and his bros.

I'm also finding some of the characters really lacking. The two krogan are awesome, as is Cora, but Liam is kind of meh. PeeBee, the asari, I think is supposed to be waifu bait, but she's irritating. Suvi, the Tempest's science officer, really grated on my teeth, mostly because the first conversation you have with her involves her talking about how Andromeda shows how awesome God's plan for the universe is.

R444, relax, I wasn't attacking you. I spent like 5 years playing *only* Unreal Tournament on my pc (one or two short games before starting to work) until I bought Mass Effect 1. After playing ME for awhile I decided it's time to jump more into gaming and bought a PS3. I totally get why games like Unreal Tournament are awesome, but I personally noticed RPG's are the games I love. They offer an emotional aspect most other genres lack.

by Anonymousreply 446March 24, 2017 10:23 AM

I got my brain readjusted and I'm not thankfully feeling grumpy about ME:Andromeda anymore. All those sci-fi elements that made the original trilogy so great are starting to come out and and I notice I want to play, and when not playing I can't wait to get back there. Yes, there's no Shep and Kaidan here, neither is the story as huge as the original's Reaper threat was but there's nothing I can do about it. I love scifi and I'd love to travel in space. This is really one of the best ways to pretend you are.

One thing I'm still feeling a bit apprehensive about is the music. The title screen score sounds partly like it's from Ridley Scott's Prometheus, which I happen to love, but it sort of would've been great to hear the moody music from the original trilogy. I totally get why they didn't want to use it but still.

by Anonymousreply 447March 25, 2017 9:03 AM

The first actual mission improves the story vastly, and by the time you meet the friendly(-ish) angara, it starts to click. Their homeworld, Aya, is GORGEOUS.

As far as the romance options, while there is no hunky side of Canadian beef, but Gil, the Tempest's engineer, is low-key sexy. He invites you to play poker, and when Scott tells him they're not playing strip poker, he responds "That's not how I'm going to get you naked."

They give you the option to start flirting with people from the jump, which is a nice change.

I'm on my 3rd playthrough of Sniper 4. God I love this game.

Killing Nazis is very therapeutic in this political climate.

by Anonymousreply 449March 25, 2017 8:03 PM

Haven't played the game yet, but this looks like something best played when the price is discounted. Aya reminds of something out of Star Wars (not Mass Effect) and the boss that floats around in a bubble (Kett Cardinal) belongs in a fantasy game not sci-fi. Just too much of the same old, same old only lackluster and mostly half-baked.

by Anonymousreply 450March 26, 2017 12:40 AM

I just finished Mass Effect: Andromeda. It was mediocre and lazily written but it was still the first AAA game in a year I managed to finish, the last one being Borderlands 2. However at the end I decided to skip smaller missions because I just wanted to get out. I reached level 62 and put in around 90 hours, and I guess most of the time was enjoyable enough, but there's no denying the whole thing is a mess.

ME:A is a massive game but it might've been much better had they made it tighter and smaller. It was annoying as hell to have to jump between planets constantly in even the smallest missions. It all ended up being very fragmented. The highlight boss fight was probably the first time I faced an Architect on the ice planet. It probably was the most exciting place to meet an Architect so I lucked out. Overall the fighting otherwise was quite enjoyable but in the end not very exciting, especially since there wasn't that much variation.

I've already bitched about the boring characters in my earlier posts right after I'd started playing, and it didn't really get much better after that although I did end up liking Drack, Vetra and Cora to a point. Scott Ryder is cute enough, and I like the voice acting, but still he'es nowhere near Shepard and Kaidan. I thought about not romancing anyone because gay romance options were bland and shitty but Reyes Vidal was actually exciting enough so I chose him. Obviously that went to hell but what can you do.

Apparently the franchise has been put on hold but I assume we'll be seeing a few DLC's released in the near future. At this point I'm not sure how I feel about them and don't know will I even be buying them. Right after finishing Dragon Age: Inquisition I was already waiting to get back to the story but with ME:A I just don't care.

I guess it's now time to jump back into Final Fantasy XV, and hopefully finish it as well.

by Anonymousreply 451May 25, 2017 12:09 PM

Possibly due to the failure of Mass Effect: Andromeda the general manager of Bioware Aaron Flynn is leaving the company, and is being replaced by Casey Hudson, who served as the project director of the original Mass Effect trilogy. I have a feeling Andromeda is not the end of Mass Effect since appointing Hudson seems to send a clear message. Or at least I hope it does.

by Anonymousreply 452July 19, 2017 10:52 PM

The bungling of Andromeda was totally on EA, not BioWare internally.

Which is a shame, because as annoying as segments of it were, there's a really good game in there, and I figured they could refine it a bit better.

The male/male romance options were really lacking, particularly since Gil's thruline is so heteronormative. He did manage a few sexy moments, though.

by Anonymousreply 453July 20, 2017 1:04 AM

My gaming PC is broken and I can't afford to fix it. Have resorted to Pokemon Go and Star Chef.

by Anonymousreply 454July 20, 2017 11:46 AM

Gil was like Steve (ME3), but less bland and more extreme. More extreme in being gay (flat out with it WHEN you go there, sex scenes finally for the most part). Yet more extreme in, indeed, being heteronormative (Jill, baby, hide the gay unless you're VERY CLEAR about wanting it, minor character compared to straights over and over).

The Jill stuff (not the skeleton of it all, but how it was consistently written and portrayed) turned me off big time and I went Reyes, then Jaal after the patch for a NG+.

I'll consider Gil on some playthrough if more content is added in DLC/sequel that revolves the more disastrous elements of his character.

I 100%ed an earlier playthrough of MEA and saw all the reactions and yadda yadda. To me, its an acceptable review range of 6-9/10 where the MET games (depending on the game) were more 7-10/10. I think 7-8/10 reviews for MEA were the most fair, and I give it a 7/10. Its a lighter 7 now with the updates they've done the last few months, but its not enough to bump it up a point.

If there's a few high quality DLC at no higher price than $15-20 each, and it manages to somewhat transform the game like the DLC for ME3 and DAI arguably did (for better or worse), then I can see it being a 8/10 to me, which will make the game be summed up as better than ME1 in all ways except as the obvious status of franchise-starter, but ME2-ME3 having a better place in my heart. Best case, I find a way to forgive Bioware for this (not considered giant, personally) mess next year and I get to play a ME game in 2020-2021 that is better than all previous games, not just the MEA place of better than ME1 and then only better than ME2-ME3 in particular ways.

Its a real step down for the series' *progress*. Even for DAI, it wasn't so objectively that sort of thing, though sure it affected some players like that. If Bioware wants to continue an Andromeda arc, it needs to be ALL hands on deck like they're apparently doing for Anthem instead. Use developments from Anthem and DA4 to give us an immersive wider galaxy to explore through, perhaps with species choice finally (like Human/Ryder?, Asari, Turian, Salarian?; when it comes to romances its no biggie - MEA itself is even experimenting with non-sexual romantic scenes if you want them, and sometimes I prefer what they've done), manual shuttle and/or ship flight/combat of sorts, and pop-in co-op. You know, the greatest dreams of ME that MEA only slightly touched (sibling choice, more variety in some ways, zoomy galaxy map and jetpack and Nomad, Strike Teams).

by Anonymousreply 456July 20, 2017 6:21 PM

Gil had one really sexy moment, though. He talks to Scott about playing poker, and the flirt option has Scott say that he's heard of strip poker, followed by "We will not be playing that." Gil then says something like "That's not how I'm going to get you naked."

by Anonymousreply 457July 20, 2017 6:23 PM

I would probably play as Sara just to romance Suvi, though. I thought I was going to hate her, but then when she turned out to be the only person to express regrets that she'd left her family behind, she won me over.

by Anonymousreply 458July 20, 2017 6:24 PM

(cont 455)

I meant 100 percent, don't know why it showed otherwise. Well 99% due to Nomad Shield Crafting mission bug. Fixed now, it seems.

And yeah Gil is properly sexual for a sexual gay guy, which I consider a real first for the series, even as I'm still very weirded out by whatever was behind the Jillbabies story. (is it a longer-term lesson plotline? tonedeaf writer? actual strong heteronormativity rearing its head?)

On my second playthrough the patch improvements abound (though are rarely anything like major), and I know the gist better and like DAI, I can sync better with the supposed 'intended' design. So I'm taking it slower, treating it more like the Star Trek Mass Effect (after the Star Wars trilogy) that it is. And liking that more. I'm romancing Jaal so he's with me 24/7, but I am only avoiding taking Drack places because that's for when my friend plays with me (she LOVES KROGAN HARD). So like, Jaal/Liam, Jaal/Cora, Jaal/Peebee, Jaal/Vetra, almost always.

I can see how this is the start of something that might become deeper. There is a real hesitance in the writing to not do too much, show too much, perhaps reveal too much. Could Cora be a partial continuation of a Illusive Man/Cerberus/Jack Harper storyline? Maybe!, but MEA sure as hell doesn't want you hung onto that yet, but instead trying to get you to just get a feel for 'Cora' as a person. Same thing with the Initiative - could it be wrapped up in some crazy conspiracy with the Milky Way? Maybe!, but MEA sure as hell prefers for you to just try to like it as an organization first. The big point is that no matter what is (or isn't) done, Mass Effect is over a 'Shepard', 'Reaper', 'Milky Way', 'Normandy' *story. That is, it being what any games are 'about'. MEA takes over half its story pretty much emphasizing this (even as in my opinion it leaves open the chance for later connections to be make, or even bigger storylines). This is cool and all, but as I like a serialization to a degree, it makes MEA kinda boring. It doesn't help that MEA also comes off as being the training wheels for a protagonist to even begin to be as big as Shepard was in most of the trilogy.

When MEA released, I was disappointed that I could only recommend it to those already hankering for another ME game. Now, I can add to that anyone who's particularly interested, and those fresh to ME that will get to have a 'new start' (which is probably closer to what Bioware intended to happen, but launch-MEA was too buggy and shoddy to properly show off).

by Anonymousreply 459July 20, 2017 6:35 PM

Mass Effect was never any good when it came to gay stuff.

Casey Hudson does have lesbian fetish though. He even put a lesbian in KotoR. Mass Effect doesn't really care about gaymers, not like Dragon Age in any case.

Note: by decades here, I'm being general. So I'm including 1999 Baldur's Gate into '2000s', and 2012 (2013 with DLC) Mass Effect 3 into '2000s'.

90s Bioware didn't do it, same with pretty much any gaming company. It also (mostly) didn't do narrative focused games at this time anyway.

00s Bioware did do it, but consistently as a business agenda. Baldur's Gate didn't have it until later (Beamdog, not Bioware) additions, I believe. I don't know about Neverwinter Nights. KOTOR had a minor bisexual female alien romance. Jade Empire had a minor bisexual female and bisexual male romance, but they did also did not have more central role. Clearly, gays were a 'why not' and 'hot girls' status, but its still interesting they had the bi guy in 2005 Jade Empire. Mass Effect came, and its only content was Liara, which amusingly, some representation at Bioware would insist is NOT LESBIAN. ASARI ARE NOT FEMALE. Of course, neglecting that for almost all function use for Shepard, and all functional use for players, they're space babes, aka female. So it was gay and not gay at all. Pathetic in retrospect. Dragon Age: Origins came, and it had two prominent bisexuals, male and female. Also a couple other gay NPCs. Though the bisexuals still didn't have a top billing, and the other gay NPCs were in very optional corners. Still, its a new gaming IP that made it clear that sexuality is inclusive in its setting, and that's still a rarity at the time. Mass Effect 2 came, and frankly got worse. Yes there was the blue space babes and their non-lesbianism, but I don't recall anything about gay male sexuality, and well, properly clear gay/lesbian female sexuality. There was your dancing secretary, but again, that's total straight male gaze stuff. Really, I feel that if even FemShep wasn't a thing from ME1, even that option to be female wouldn't have existed in ME2. ME2 had a lot of fun and awesome in it, but it was the pinnacle (even more than ME3) of straight demo pandering. I'm cool with pandering existing, but this was the point where its just laughable. Dragon Age 2, however, went another way. It had four party members, two male and two female, made 'playersexual/bisexual'. One was considered hetero earlier, but I guess awkwardly retconned or 'corrected' into bi. Yet by all Bioware accounts, this wasn't made to be particularly progressive - the game was rushed and it was easier to not have to account for genders, along with liberal leanings of developers anyway. Anyway, this was the first chance to just feel you were playing GAY, even if you still somewhat were not ('playersexual'). Mass Effect 3 went pandering, but in another direction. Now Liara is more prominently back, and Kaidan, previously straight/presumed straight, is made bi. And Bioware seemed to back off its defensiveness about asari. So bi squad members!, as awkwardly as this was done. Also, token gays, Samantha and Steve, on the ship. They had good qualities to them and were not all a waste, but they were clear afterthoughts in the design. While some gay haters increasingly freaked out about this trend in Bioware games, others were getting more pleased that they/their desires for stories and options were getting representation. During this time, the while road to gay marriage was proceeding, so pro-gay all the wayz. Sam and Steve lacked content, but they did get more scenes and involvement in DLC, further securing Bioware's commitment, regardless of its nature or total motives.

SWTOR also happened. It ran away from the gay at launch (2011), but in later expansions (2013+) relaxed a lot, but mostly though just making new romances automatically bi (aka the cheaper, easier way; but that's the whole journey of that game for everything).

by Anonymousreply 461July 20, 2017 8:37 PM

10s Bioware had Dragon Age: Inquisition and now Mass Effect: Andromeda. Dragon Age had complaints, but most of them were picky picky picky. Major gay and bi characters, trans inclusion, etc. There was conservative outcry (both honed and stupid), but it settled. Actually, many straight men ROMANCED Dorian.

So this is why MEA is kind of a mess. It did go forward in some ways. But it also fell back in others, and even seemed to give more of an impression than *ME3* that it was only doing gay male material because it was expected to. The Jaal patch helps things (despite the obvious pushback to a 'gay patch'), but there will always be a mark. Not to mention I have to agree with how its writing was relatively tonedeaf on LGBT issues (not 'correct activist writing' - which is never outright necessary - but ....sometimes the very basics).

My impression is that the creative-focused are more often progressive and go to Bioware as even a haven for their views, but the creative-management leaders are just more liberal and flip around whatever sells and/or pleases their employees, and the owners just want money. Casey Hudson is returning to manage Bioware and I don't know whether anything's changed with him. At worst, I imagine him seeing some sort of Trump and social conservative trend and being an asshole and deciding to mandate that all games (starting with Anthem) dial down inclusion of anything LGBT (besides the showcased lesbian/bisexual female). At best he'll be hands off and Dragon Age upps it (biggest prediction a trans major NPC), and Mass Effect's next game has a gay squadmate.

I think Bioware studios internally are getting more millennial and more LGBT+/GSM, or for us, gay inclusive. But I don't think that means that the people at the top care as much (or at all), or that everything they do is going to click. Especially when they're on one hand trying to not scare off the dudebros (even if it means sacrificing integrity in order to appease even outright bigots), and on the other, not trying to set off an activist firestorm (easy target, that all annoying thing). I think one of them called it the 'EA bearhug' - giving you everything, smothering you with attention, but also overbearing you with expectations. Rope to hang yourself with. Gee, thanks for that rope though.

At the end of the day, in AAA gaming, you'll get the most of it, still, in Bioware games. But the gap between Bioware and other AAA gaming is, in my opinion, narrowing by the year. Especially when they do MEA "Hi I'm trans tiny NPC", "I'm gay and must have a baby with a woman", "Yeah get your gay lovin with Jaal, whoops, psyche!", "See, you can be gay AND religious! Who'd have thunk!", and so on. I never agreed with the "Bioware is so progressive they've gone regressive" edgy Internet narrative, but for MEA I finally find a sympathy.

This Kotaku in-depth article makes it seem EA had little to do with the problems. It was all on Bioware.

[bold]"I’ve spent the past three months investigating the answers to those questions. From conversations with nearly a dozen people who worked on Mass Effect: Andromeda, all of whom spoke under condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to talk about the game, a consistent picture has emerged. The development of Andromeda was turbulent and troubled, marred by a director change, multiple major re-scopes, an understaffed animation team, technological challenges, communication issues, office politics, a compressed timeline, and brutal crunch."

R462, well, Bioware just announced during the ongoing E3 Expo that Anthem will not have ANY kind of romancing. You can be just friends with your team mates. It's actually quite a shame. However silly the love making scenes have been in the Bioware titles they still brought in something special other games lacked. I'm currently replaying Mass Effect 2 and I can't wait to get to Mass Effect 3 where I can have male Shep and Kaidan Alenko get back together once again.

by Anonymousreply 467June 11, 2018 11:02 PM

Not only that, but the single-player experience in Anthem sounds really bare-bones.

by Anonymousreply 468June 11, 2018 11:08 PM

R468, oh yes. I'm not into Destiny and Anthem seems to really be nothing more than a Destiny with a *slightly* better story.

The only game so far from E3 I'm sort of excited about is Cyberpunk 2077. Too bad it's from CD Projekt Red since I still remember them having a homophobic character in Witcher 2. Then again apparently they had a really small pro-gay scene in Witcher 3, so who knows. If only Bioware was behind Cyberpunk...

Yeah, Cyberpunk 2077 is really the one thing that's piqued my interest. I assume we'll see more of The Last of Us II at Sony's presser tonight.

Also, as I really loved Life Is Strange, I'm going to be checking out Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit, but that's not really a AAA title.

by Anonymousreply 470June 11, 2018 11:20 PM

That trailer for Cyberpunk 2077 looked a lot like Grand Theft Auto (too much like) - hope the main protagonist is better too.The much older trailer was much more interesting. Oh well, we'll see

So, Spider-Man is basically Spider-Man: Arkham Asylum, and I'm totally fine with that.
