I was on a film set only once, as an extra in a French short with only 2 "name" actors (a guy who was in a very successful franchise in the 1960s and 1970s and a woman who was unbelievably hot in the late 1970s but is just another bourgeoise today - both were B-list in their heyday). The film was being shot by a guy who did commercials and thre assistant director went on to bigger things (still as an AD, but on much bigger movies).

It was a fun experience, albeit a bit boring (you spend a lot of time waiting, the people you meet seem to be drifters more than anything else). But what surprised me the most was how sexually charged the atmosphere is, and this was especially true on the second day. It was as if the set was really a place to meet people to hook up later. There were a couple of middle-aged extras who were exchanging phone numbers and it seemed as if they were going to hook up that very evening or in any case very soon thereafter. There was this guy in his forties (I was maybe 27 then) who showed me pics of his mobile home and clearly wanted me to join him on one of his escapades, these are the two occurrences I remeber most, but it was generally just like a hookup place.

Cannot imagine what it must be like on a film set that goes on for weeks.
