It had become a ghost of what it was intended to be, R2.
R2 Because with only 4 soap operas on these days, the channel is kind of pointless now.
If only P&G, CBS, and NBC had held on to the tapes of shows from the '80s (ATWT, GL) and the '70s (AW).
They waited way too long to start that channel. It should have been launched in the 90s when soaps were still popular and we didn't have DVRs!
R6 Exactly! Or even the late 80's.
The utility of them rerunning same day episodes is dying. As the story says, currently at least 50% of the households that get SOAPnet also have DVRs. For those that don't there are other ways (abc.com, hulu, etc.) to catch the current shows if you miss the original broadcast.
But the real appeal of the channel should be their platform for re-running the old shows and old-ass episodes of the current ones. Seems like that should be low-cost programming.
Did they show any old shows besides "Dark Shadows"? I think that was when SOAPnet first came on the air.
The whole channel model is circling the drain.
They were only down to showing Days of Our Lives and General Hospital. I stopped watching when they inexplicably dropped The Young and the Restless.
Did they drop Y&R, r11, or did the re-broadcast rights just get taken over by TVGuide Channel?
I don't think it's so inexplicable.
CBS is part owner of TVGuide Net, and since they knew that SOAPNet was folding soon it makes perfect sense for them to seek another outlet (one that's within their family of networks) for rerunning their show.
Soap operas are for the elderly.
r13 I am 25 and i watch soaps, but yes it skews older...
I don't have a DVR and work during the day. I also don't like watching stuff on my laptop. I need SOAPnet so I can watch Days at 8 pm,
Comcast hasn't offered SOAPnet in years.
People tape soaps via DVR or watch via Hulu for free.

SoapNet showed old 80s episodes of Another World and Ryan's Hope for a few years. Syi-FI back when it was known as Sci-Fi aired episodes of Dark Shadows for several years.
r8 But the channel airs prime-time soaps and other similar shows. The channel is fine as long as they focus more on soaps in general, and not the current daytime soaps. The ad dollars are probably good since it is targeted towards women.

Not "Days of our Lives"
I think SOAPnet should have modeled itself after TV Land. It should have showed episodes from years ago (the 70s and 80s), but not just the ABC soaps.
I do watch Y&R on TVGN at 7 p.m. I actually like watching the show at the end of the work day.
COMCAST stopped offering it in Boston in March of 2012.
Much prefer watching DOOL and Y&R on the NBC/CBS web sites, anyway.
SoapNet in its earlier years was heaven for this primetime soap junkie! They effed up when they quit showing all but "Dallas", which is the one nighttime soap I never got into.
