Exactly [R6]. Hayward and Merrick (producers) were not gay & neither were Styne or Merman.
However,I believe everyone else (Robbins, Laurents, Sondheim) associated with
putting the musical on stage in the late '50s was/is gay.
That's not unusual on Broadway. But, by 1959, it would have very difficult to put together a musical starring Ethel Merman that was uninteresting to the gay community.
I didn't mean literally the creators and cast, just the aesthetic and subtext, the overall camp factor.
But great notes; thanks! I love that show!
Nathan Lane as Mama Rose
Zac Efron as Louise
Matthew Broderick as Herbie
Simon Halls as Mama Rose and Matt Bomer as Louise.
No, wait, that's real life.
I just laughed myself silly at the Nathan Lane/Zac Efron pairing. If I had lots of money, I'd pay for that revival.
John Travolta is Mama Rose.
Get serious. Most of the recent Roses have been drag queens. What that show needs is someone who finally nails Rose in order to make the show truly profitable. What about Kate McKinnon? Can she sing at all?
If we're going lesbian, then why not Rosie O'Donnell?
Rosie O'Donnell as Mazeppa
Wanda Sykes as Tessie Tura
Lea Delaria as Electra
Love Matt and Nathan as Rose and Herbie
