Straight people's Pre-AIDS attitudes toward gay people

I'm referring to late '70s/early '80s (1980-81-82) era. Was there a growing acceptance of gay people in mainstream America? Was the homophobia of the pre-Stonewall period washing away or were people still leery of gay people and thought of them as "freaks?" Were things "getting better" right before AIDS hit or was it still a grim time to be gay?
