That Tom Hanks 'Captain Phillips' film looks absurd
The story just doesn't seem really movie worthy at this point. But of course Hanks, desperate to be seen as an action hero and "brave American" couldn't help himself.
CBS Sunday Morning is shilling the hell out of it this morning and Hanks is droning on and on about how "real" the experience was and the director going on about how "intense" the shooting was.
Saw it last night... Way too long and not extraordinary enough to be good. Some good acting from Hanks, the villain is a great actor but a little too "nice" and not menacing enough... Really a clusterfuck because it could have and should have been great. Truly forgettable.
Why is this being presented in IMAX?
Hanks has never been too cheap to be used as a shill for the military and the like.
It should be renamed "Wilson's Revenge"
The trailer alone puts me to sleep. Who'd pay money for this snoozefest?
People who want to see black villains. Seriously.
Why are wealthy Jewish men in Hollywood so hellbent on making/staring in films portraying other wealthy, white Jewish men as macho patriotic heroes?
Is it because of the stereotype of Jewish men being whiny and weak?
Tom Hanks is not Jewish. He is of English and Portugese ancestry, and his parents were Bible-thumpers.
I think Tom Hanks is indeed Jewish.
I'm from Boston, and my antenna is tuned to hear bad New England accents. And Tom's in the trailer was laughably bad. I didn't know the Captain was a New Englander, but, man o man, is that one fake accent. It's almost as bad as Kevin Costner's in "13 Days."
It looks like totally racist pro-USA pro-military propaganda. I caught the trailer during the Breaking Bad finale and it disgusted me; it looked like something straight from Bush W's first term. I thought Paul Greengrass had better sense than that.
You idiots. Have any of you (besides one) even seen the movie? It's fantastic. It's neither pro-military nor racist or anti-whatever. It presents the story as it happened, and explains the rationale behind Somali pirates without making them seem like either sad pathetic Africans or crazy psycho Africans. And Hanks is fantastic in it.
Anyone who thinks Tom Hanks is Jewish needs to get their Jew-dar fixed
Could they make the Somalis look any more rat-like? It reminds me of WWII propaganda that depicted the Japanese as rodents. Haven't we moved beyond this kind of gross racial characterization yet?
When the fuck will the tiresome Tom Hanks go away already?!? And will he bring Julia Roberts with him?!?
Silly R12, when have you ever seen anyone on DL actually watch a movie before eviscerating it? DL must hate stupidly and blindly.
Spoiler alert: At the end of the film, everybody dies when Sandra Bullock's Chinese spaceship falls on the boat.
The really life Captain Phillips is being sued by 9 of his crew members. They argue that the captain disregarded warnings about the pirate infested waters and did not change his route. they say the movie is fiction.
Could they make the Somalis look any more rat-like?
Those actors do NOT look like rats.
I don't see any "racist" angle here. The Somalis in the movie were actually Somalis, and Somalia is truly a dangerous placed, plagued by pirates and terrorists, etc.
What I do hate is Tom Hanks being portrayed constantly as a swashbuckling American hero. His ego is the size of the fucking galaxy. And sorry, I'm not seeing where the actual Captain Phillips is some hero worthy of being immortalized by a film in his name.
R20, the main villain's nickname in the film is "Skinny Rat."
Jesus Christ, how is this racist? This actually happened and the pirate/terrorists were Somali. Would you have preferred that they cast white people in the roles? And for the person who said they look like "rats" - YOU my friend are the racist here. They don't resemble rats in the least. They look like normal Somali men.
Perhaps skinny rat was his real nicknameor is that was the anglos on the ship called him?
It's a true story. Facts are a bitch to the PC crowd.
I just saw it because of the reviews.
I usually stay away from Tom Hanks movies, but...in those final 10 minutes, I think he is as good as movie acting gets.
The movie is way too long and the director really overuses the hand-held camera and I needed a dramamine. However, the movie dos a good job presenting the Somali reality. It is David vs. Goliath and it is very sad.
However, why didn't you tell me that Max Martini was in it? Yummerz
A true story can always get the spin any way you like. That's the point.
CNN ran a story about how the captain ignored repeated warnings about pirates in the area and that he intentionally ignored the specific warning to stay AT LEAST 600 miles off shore.
The captain even admitted to seeing those warnings.
"Oh my God. I'm back. I'm home. All the time, it was... We finally really did it ... You Maniacs! You blew it up! Ah, damn you! God damn you all to hell!"
We are switching to the new platform for The DataLounge this weekend. All of our mobile users have been using it for over a week and all first time users have been using it for about a month - which adds up to well over one million users. So we're ready to end this phase of the testing and move everybody to the new site. (more)
And yes, we've changed the look and some of how it operates.
Yes, we know you just *hate* it in well in advance.
Yes, we know we suck.
Yes, we are the biggest suckers that ever sucked.
But it was time for a change and with the huge shift to mobile it was long overdue. We've taken this opportunity not only to update the look but also make major changes under the hood (or "bonnet" if you're either British or pretentious or both). And we have to prepare for 2016 - a presidential election year where we can normally expect to see a 60% jump in traffic (yes, we've seen 5 presidential elections so far…Christ we're old).
The site has a bunch - nay, plethora - of new features which will make the site more usable: better search, the ability to ignore posters and threads, see link previews, to pick up a thread where you left off, spam and malware filtering and more.
If you want you can go explore and see for yourself, Click here.
And while running the tests we've noticed two interesting reactions to the new system - people are spending more time on the site and more people that come stay around longer and look at more stuff. Both good things. Yay!
The old site will remain around on http://legacy.datalounge.com while things settle down but will go away fairly soon as we consolidate everything to the one "official" site.
Possibly we've not slain all the dragons and there will be issues that come up during the switchover. There's a help button in the lower right hand corner of the page which you can use to send us bug reports.
Please include as much information about the hardware (PC, Mac, Tablet, Phone etc), operating system (Windows, Mac OS, Android, iOS etc) and browser (Chrome, Safari, Opera, Internet Explorer etc) that you are using as possible to help us replicate and fix the problem.
Please note that complaints about colors, fonts, icons and the like are not "bugs" - they are design choices that we've made and we expect one or two cases of world-class bitching. But they won't actually cause headaches, scurvy, heart attacks, Restless Leg Syndrome, Morgellon's Disease or the vapors (but have your smelling salts at hand just in case).
Talking to DataLounge servers. Please wait a moment...
