Mellie for President! She's the baddest ass of them all.
The ratings for the season premiere was very good! The highest ever for the show. A lot of people who didn't watch Scandal in the beginning caught up with the 1st and 2nd season of the show via Netflix or DVD.
If you missed the premiere, it's being repeated Tuesday, Oct. 5, at 10 pm, instead of unlucky Lucky 7.
R2 It was also repeated on BET, and there was a clip show Thursday night to catch people up.
The clip show was helpful in explaining Olivia's feeling responsible for what happened to Lindsay Dwyer/Quinn Perkins. I missed that first time around.
I'm one of those who caught up with Season 1 on Netflix and most of Season 2 on Huluplus. I watched the last three episodes of Season 2 on broadcast TV, and was ready for the new season's premiere.
Scandal is now one of my favorite shows. I'm a total Gladiator now.
One reason I hadn't been into drama series in the past is the fear of missing an episode or two and then not being able to catch up. Now that I have Hulu i am loving TV a lot more.
Daddy issues much? Great acting by KW and Joe Morgan--they sound like each other when giving orders.
R6, you sound exactly like me. I began to hear about the show late in Season 2. I used Netflix and Hulu Plus to catch up, and watched the last three shows of Season 2 on broadcast.
I also tended to avoid dramatic series for the same reason, and love the
sense of security Hulu gives me.
This show is beyond stupid.
Well then, R9, it's a good thing your opinion doesn't count.
Love Olivia Pope! I am HERE for her!
It is settled, R11.
Did Quinn lose weight.
Abby's hair looks much better.
What happened to Abby's face? She looks very different. Too much botox and filler? She doesn't look like she gained a lot of weight. I find Kerry Washington's mouth very unattractive and distracting. As is her mild speech impediment. She has a problem pronouncing the sibilant s. And before you attack me for having an issue with big lips, let me say that I find Nicole Beharie very beautiful. And she has luscious, full lips.
KW and NB remind me of each other in their acting style and certain facial expressions, although Kerry can be a bit over-the-top at times, but her show seems to call for it. I love her lips, though. They are everything (next to those fantastic white clothes she wears).
I don't think Abby has gained any weight. Quinn has lost some weight.
Daddy Pope wins for chewing scenery.
Season is off to a good start.
Scandal is on regular Hulu. No need to pay anything.
I would like to see daddy Pope and Jessica Lange chew scenery together.
Abby looks different because of a new hairstyle (curly) and different makeup (thick top and bottom eyeliner). In an interview with elle.com Darby Stanchfield, who plays Abby, explains that it ties in to changes in store for the character this season.
Eli Pope is a monster.
I am liking SCANDAL even more this season than I did before, which is to say a lot. Adding Eli Pope to the story and connecting him to Cyrus is a wonderful new twist. Plus it seems Olivia has changed some of her home decorating, incorporating my favorite color, turquoise (or else I wasn't paying attention for the first two years).
I'm loving Mellie this season especially.
R27 Mellie for President!
Are you enjoying Lisa Kudrow as the Democratic Sarah Palin?
Having Lisa Kudrow on anything is a terrible idea. The sound of her voice makes me want to leave the room. But she's going to be a huge part of the story this season, so I can't turn her off like a Yoplait commerical.
R29 - Yes, I'm enjoying Lisa. I want more drunk Mellie, though.
I really enjoy this show for the soapy over-the-top drama that it is. However, I can't stand how they all deliver the dialogue in pretty much the exact same way. I realize that is Shonda Rhimes' writing style, but does she stand there and tell them all to talk really fast and then suddenly slow down and put a period.between.ev-ery. word. when trying to make a point? It's distracting.
Are they going to work in Kerry's pregnancy?
That's a nasty scandal to end the episode with. Did not see that coming.
Abby looks really good this season.
R35 - Shatner should sue for copyright infringement.
R37 - Yes, Abby does.
Mellie looked fantastic last night.
How the fuck did the president NOT know that her mother had died on that plane?
Just too boring for her to ever bring up?
I like Lisa Kudrow, but I don't really care for her on this show. In general I think she's much more effective as a comedic actress than a dramatic one. Whenever she plays a dramatic role, her line delivery still always has a sharp tongued comic edge to it. Her character here just reminds me of the "what if" episode of Friends when Phoebe was working on Wall Street and it's hard to take her seriously.
Also, I didn't understand her anger over the commercial in the last episode. The commercial was a blatant take off on the ad Hillary ran about Obama's lack of experience. The fact that the commercial on the show had a female hand didn't make it sexist; it made it directed at Reston's opponent who happened to be a woman. And the fact that she went on TV and attacked Reston for his sexism made no sense when the ad turned out to be fake. What evidence then did she have of his alleged sexism? S
Kate Burton does a solid job as the VP. She doesn't go over the top, but maintains just the right level of self righteousness. And you can't altogether blame her for resenting president for the way he and Cy have used her.
And the fact that she went on TV and attacked Reston for his sexism made no sense when the ad turned out to be fake.
I was laughing about this because it was a clever plot twist that wound up being really stupid.
The actress who plays the VP is perfection.
This show is dumb.
What white president would risk his presidency for some black piece of ass?
None. Nope not even Clinton.
racist much?, R45. Go troll somewhere else...
R44 - Her name is Bellamy Young.
No, her name is Kate Burton (Richard's daughter.) Bellamy Young plays the First Lady, not the VP.
I didn't see the first season. What happened to Fitz and Mellie? I know he had the affair but why does he usually act like he can't stand her?
Loved the first two seasons.
Am enjoying this season as well, but they sure have amped it up to the point of outrageous. It's quite fun, but doesn't seem grounded in any sort of reality anymore.
At they rate they're going, we're going to find out that Olivia's father was responsible for the 9-11 attacks and that Huck was flying one of the planes.
I loved Rowan's plot twist at the end last night. That never occurred to me.
I haven't watched this show. Is it worth going back to the first two seasons to catch up?
Yes, definitely, R55.
The first season is short and mostly a single story.
Last night's ep may have been my favorite so far. I just have one question, and it's about Khandi Alexander's character: WHY?????
The last night's episode felt like a cliffhanger. Is the show going on a hiatus until new year?
I just started watching and I think Fitz and Olivia have tons of chemistry but I feel terribly sorry for Mellie.
R59, there'll be one more episode on Dec. 5, and then they're going on "winter hiatus." They won't be back until Feb. 27.
Liv: "You killed my mother!"
Fitz: "I built you a house!"
Did Cyrus's husband have sex with the VP's husband or did they stage those pictures?
Actually, how the HELL did they take those pictures?! Did the Secret Service take them?
Cyrus had a photographer planted in a tree at the VP's residence. I imagine it was someone from B613.
I'm wondering if James just pretended to have sex with Mr. VP. They carefully prevented us from seeing what happened between James' realization and Cyrus' seeing the photos on his phone.
I was wondering the same thing (about faking the pics) since we were treated to flashbacks of the conversation between James and Cyrus that morning as the VP's husband was speaking.
James then realized he was set up and knew he was being pimped out by Cyrus. It broke my heart to see the tears in Cyrus's eyes. Yes, I know he brought it on himself but its obvious he didn't think of the possiblility that James would do anything.
However, James wouldn't know about the photographer though, right? So maybe he DID do the VP's hubby?
I'll have to watch the episode again this weekend. I could be wrong but it looked like James's sweater was on backwards.
Nelly aka R64
You felt sorry for Cyrus, R66? What about James??? James was the one who was betrayed, not Cyrus. Cyrus is a pretty despicable character, in my opinion. I like Cyrus, but he is an incredibly manipulative character.
This show is so absurd and the "love story" between Olivia and Fitz is just cheesy beyond belief, and yet I keep watching.
It is my favorite show these days.
Cyrus has done nothing but use and manipulate James. Last year he nearly had him killed. Why the hell exactly does James stay with him??
Is that the end of Lisa Kudrow's storyline? Because it felt like a lot of build up for nothing.
Is that the end of Lisa Kudrow's storyline?
God, I hope so.
Dear [r65] and [r64] They have these modern contraptions where photos can be taken without a human operating the device. You place it in front of the action ... try xtube. Cyrus was counting on his husband turning it down and writing about it in outrage. The rest of the show has gone down the toilet shark and all.
The kiss between Quin and Charlie was hotter than any of the "love" scenes between Fitz and Olivia. I like Kerry but she really needs to work on her O face. It looks like her angry face. Which looks just like her "I'm in emotional pain" face. And I agree that the transition from "YOU KILLED MY MOTHER" to dropping her draws because Fitz bought them a house was really pushing the envelope. It's as if Shonda Rhimes is letting the fans dictate the plot lines and it isn't doing this show any favors. Give me more Mellie, James and Cyrus. Washington is starting to look silly every time she has a meltdown. Which is like every other scene. And her speech impediment is more pronounced when she yells. Again, not doing the actress or show any favors.
Oh, go watch Jonny Lee Miller, R73, if you hate Kerry so much.
Don't you usually sign your posts Gladiator, r74? Just because you don't like my take on the show doesn't mean I'm a hater or my opinion has no relevance. Washington has limited range and the Pope character is now a cliche. Don't hate me. Take it up with Shonda Rhimes and the actress portraying her.
I don't [italic]think[/italic] I'm Gladiator. I may have signed a post "another Gladiator" once, but I think someone else actually uses the name.
R67, I should have put the word almost in parenthesis in my post at R66. The tears in Cyrus's eyes appeared when he realized what James did/might have done, not what he might have made happen. And yes, he is a master manipulator.
And R72, I missed the photography set-up. Please, if you can, find it in your heart to forgive.
R66 aka Nelly
What was in the photo Olivia looked at? Fitz's SS guy gave it to her in a manila envelope IIRC. I couldn't see what it was a photo of.
Ewwww, R73, Charlie is so disgusting, I don't know how any scene he was involved in could ever be construed as "hot". He looks like Paul Rudd's shrivelled older brother.
I wish they would just kill off Quinn, can't stand that moronic bitch. Hopefully Huck will dispose of her next week. It would be hot if Huck got together with Harrison.
R63 It was also so odd when Fitz told Olivia that he had hoped to fill the bedrooms with children and raise a family with her in that house. Isn't he supposed to be 50+ years old? And doesn't he already have a bunch of kids with Mellie?
Quinn is looking good these days.
No one mentioned shirtless (finally!) Harrison?
Well r75 I don't blame Kerry I think she has more than the range they give her to portray. I used to watch Grey's but any character I liked soon got stuck in certain modes of expression that for some reason Shonda was loving them in. It goes along with a Shonda show that she will run some things into the ground thus ruining some great stuff.
Did anyone else gag when Maya gnawed open her wrist? Did she actually swallow her flesh? That was disgusting. Yes, I'm squeamish.
R72 R84, I actually did say "shark" when I saw what Khandi was doing to herself, but I put a question mark after it. I want to know what she did. I know we'll find out "in good time," and I HATE spoilers. My guess is that she set up what happened to the plane, but then I take it right back because it's too red a herring to be true.
We have to find out before the break, because Liv and Mom have now found each other again.
I love this show, even in all its excess. And I love Kerry.
I love this show, despite the fact that the lead actress is quite mediocre. I sometimes wonder how much better the show would be with Viola Davis in the lead.
Though I like Viola Davis, I probably wouldn't have started watching it if Kerry weren't the star. I find her delightful.
The show is getting a little over the top.
New episodes will air Dec. 5 and 12.
You're welcome, R90. At the end of the last episode, I thought they made the announcement that there'd only be one ep on Dec. 5 before they broke until late Feb., so when I checked Dec. 12 and saw there's another ep, I thought I should let people know.
Last night was good, but the surprise reversal with Maya almost at the end was kind of expected.
I've been increasingly unhappy with this show and have been looking for a reason to drop it. The opening torture porn scene from Thursday's episode gave me plenty of reason. Never again.
The editing for this episode was atrocious. I had to check to make sure that my video player didn't start it in the middle.
Back on tonight!!!
Just 4-1/2 more hours. Can't wait. Thought Feb. 27 would never get here.
Are they still trying to hide KW's pregnancy? Is that the reason they only ordered 8 more episodes?
Really? Only 8 episodes? That takes us to April 17. I saw the commercial that said "8 in a row," but figured there'd be more eps afterwards. I thought the ratings had improved to the extent they'd run SCANDAL during May sweeps this year.
You know what would be nice, is if they ran episodes in the summer. I don't turn my TV on from June-September.
Did you like last night's episode?
Are they dealing with Olivia's father's order to have her whacked? Will they ever?
Has this show really jumped the shark, as they say?
So, is Quinn slated to die soon?
They've REALLY done a makeover on Darby Stanchfield (Abby.) She looked super glamorous for the first time ever last night. And we finally got a brief shirtless glimpse of Harrison.
Darby looks a lot better.
Anyone watch last night's episode?!
Shocking flashback regarding Mellie!
Huck getting coffee for Olivia and talking to her for the first time in a long time?
Hello? Is This Thing On?
Having heard a little about this show, I watched some clips of it on YouTube. They're ALL essentially the same; a lot of screaming, a lot of crying, a lot of face-sucking and thrashing underneath the bedclothes.
Kerry Washington always has a distraught look on her face, is always breaking down in tears, and basically comes across as a mentally unstable slut teetering contantly on the edge of a complete nervous breakdown.
The guy who plays "Fitz" is the most sociopathic-looking actor I think I've ever seen, which totally suits his character: the utterly immoral, sociopathic President of the United States.
Good God, what dreck. But dreck apparently has an audience. A brain dead audience.
Are they going to kill off Quinn?
Mellie is now stealing the show.
I loved the bit of the VP candidate wanting to touch Jackie Kennedy's portrait. And then he did.
I cannot stand this show anymore.
Termites chew less scenery.
The acting is just terrible. Perry is the worst. He's always waaaaay over the top. His breakdown tonight was very badly done. Washington curls her upper lip when she wants to look distressed which is the majority of the time. I just can't look at their faces anymore.
I wonder how far in advance (and how far into the future) they've sketched out the plotlines. It is getting SO complicated!
Yup, R102, it's officially jumped.
It was shocking and crazy for a while - in a good way. Now, it's just ridiculous. I saw though most of this season's "shockers" instantly.
SPOILERS IF YOU DON'T KNOW
- Fitz leaking Liv's name
- Mom still being alive
- Mom being a "baddie"
- Dad 'protecting' Olivia
- Harrison's ex working with Mom
- Jake becoming Command
- Millie being "the one that got away" from Fitz's friend
A lot of the plot is reminding me of 'Alias,' the show that Jennifer Garner starred in years ago.
I cried when Cyrus broke down for two reasons; (1) I hate to see a man cry - it signals to me that he is REALLY hurt (the whole "men don't cry" thing) and (2) that Gladys Knight song always gets me. Maybe because I've never felt that way about anyone/had anyone say they felt that way about me.
Cyrus is an ass who almost had his Husband killed last season so it's hard to elicit sympathy for him.
Yet this show did last night.
Cyrus is a complicated, unattractive, hot mess and I love that we have this very flawed selfloathing gay man on a show and he is still seen as A HUMAN BEING.
I dont' really understand what James saw in him other than his Power.
I have to say seeing 'Cyrus and James' trend on Twitter last night gave me a moment of pause. Say what you like about the show, we are finally living in a time when a gay male couple on a popular drama elicits an emotional response from the audience.
We got to see a visceral emotional reaction and fans responded as they should.
...Oh, and the gay guy didn't die for being gay. It was part of the plot— like any other character would.
R115, I agree. Shonda loves the gays.
Just read that Dan Bucatinsky already has his next job lined up. He will star with DL-fave Casey Wilson in a sitcom on NBC.
Your suggestion is noted but I see little practical merit in having the telephone up my jumper.
I didn't know that Bucatinsky is Lisa Kudrow's producing partner.
Me either, R119. I have been noticing his name as "Co-executive Producer" on Grey's Anatomy. Wonder what's up with that.
R115 you nailed it. I like that in Shonda's shows, the gays and people of color aren't the Special Problem of the Week to Solve, but are just as flawed/broken/immoral as the next person.
And yes, Bucatinsky is apparently one of the producers on Grey's. He played the partner of a chubby opera singer that was a Patient Of The Week a few years back, too.
And he's co-produced a few shows with Kudrow. The one I know for sure is the ancestry show "Who Do You Think You Are," first on NBC and now on TLC.
It could explain how Kudrow ended up in that show arc on Scandal.
I liked Lisa in the show. That's not the problem.
I hated it last night. Jeff Perry is such a bad actor. - ham, hammy, hammiest.
I like him more than Lisa Kudrow, R124. She may not look as if she has PSS (Pinched Sphincter Syndrome), but she sure does sound like it.
Bucatinsky's husband is Don Roos (they have two children, too) who wrote and directed "The Opposite of Sex" with Kudrow.
Excellent post, R115.
I cried when Cyrus broke-down at the press podium. That was such good acting there. It really rang true od someone holding in his emotions, then suddenly... Bam.
Jeff Perry is such a bad actor. - ham, hammy, hammiest.
Let's give a shout out here to khandi Alexander (terrorist middleman momma pope.)
She usually bugs me but is doing nice work here.
Wow. Jeff Perry sure does ping.
How ironic that he's (supposedly) straight but has to butch it up to play a gay man.
Jeff Perry used to be married to Laurie Metcalf aka Aunt Jackie on Roseanne.
Jeff Perry pretty much acts circles around everyone else on Scandal.
I thought he was pretty subdued as Meredith Grey's father on Grey's Anatomy.
I wonder what would happen in the real world if a Republican Chief of Staff had a very public melt down over his gay husband's death on live national television?
I always thought it was funny that there was ZERO reference to any other gay men in congress, senate, white house staff, etc. Cyrus deals in secrets— he would know who ALL The gays were in that business. But somehow he's the only visible around, aside from his dead husband and the daed man his dead husband slept with.
I went back and watched some of the old James and Cy scenes. Man Cyrus was an abusive fuck sometimes, but Jamess was into it— for his career. What struck me about his show is how no one ever questioned them as a UNIT. There were a couple, period. No question. Even the rabit right-wing nutjob Sally talks to Cyrus as a relative equal. It's a lovely fantasy.
But now with james gone, I am curious to see if they 'neuter' the one Gay man on the show. Will he just be another background gay-in-name-only character?
I hope not. How will they keep Cyrus human?
So tonight is the Season Finale... does the thing settle for just jumping the shark one last time this year or does it grab that fucking shark and pin it in a Half Nelson?
I agree with r130. I watched Perry on Jimmy Kimmel and he has limp wristitis. Bad. Kimmel kept following that wrist with his eyes like it was a mosquitoe looking for a landing site. Cyrus doesn't ping at all. Perry is a pearl clutching MARY! in comparison. Off topic, Shonda Rhimes looks like Fat Al Sharpton complete with the early eighties James Brown flip wig. Wow. Not an attractive woman.
Yes, R137, but she's not in front of the camera.
So what was the big shocker they were promising?
That Fitz IV was murdered?
Also Harrison and Eli and Maya "shockers."
SPOILERS IN THIS POST....
I think it was a bit subdued because of Kerry's pregnancy, but Jerry's death was a shock, and the fact that Mama and Daddy Pope appear to be working together, and that Daddy killed Jerry. I don't see how Olivia and Fitz can survive that.
I don't know how Olivia can be taken seriously when her parents are both monsters.
How come the finale wasn't shown during May sweeps? (same thing with How I Met Your Mother)
Mama and Daddy Pope appear to be working together
Did you see the last scene?
The season ended early R143.
In part because of Kerry's pregnancy....
And also - supposedly, they got halfway through the season and decided to change course, and reshot three or four episodes.
This was just a rumor floating around but Shonda's comments on Kimmel last night (about having Jake be Fitz's VP selection) actually sort of give them credence.
