Saw Charo in Hawaii doing her thing 20 years ago or so. She looked (a very good) 50 then.

She was a fabulous live performer. Plenty of Goochie- Moochie, but also told jokes, danced and most especially played some kick-ass classical guitar.

Love her. I think the most inspired use of Charo, as a guest star, was a 1985 episode of "The Facts of Life" in which Natalie starts writing story, while stranded alone at a truck stop. The characters in her story (a waitress, a femme-fatale, and a pilot)are inhabited by Jo, Blair & Tootie.

At one point, Natalie doesn't know where to go with the plot. Jo, Blair & Tootie, as their characters, fire a bunch of ridiculous suggestions at her. Natalie: "Oh, yeah, that's believable! We've got a truck stop, a schitzo pilot, the woman in red....all I need now is for Charo to walk through the front door!" It's all kinds of awesome.

They had rotating guest stars and one week they had Charo and despite her silliness which made Carmen Miranda look like Judy Dench I always enjoyed her immensely and went.

She's so clearly NOT 67. For Christ's sake, as a little kid I remember her on shows in the 70s and she was well into her 30s then. She's well into her 70s.

Thousands of years ago, I was known as Ixtab, Mayan goddess of the hanged. I welcomed their souls into the afterlife until I got bored and decided I would rather be the goddess of maracas and dancing!

I attended boarding school in Madrid for a year as a young child, and remember Charo as a fun-loving fellow student, two years ahead of me. I believe there is documentary footage of her as a young adult entertaining the Loyalist troops with her flamenco guitar.

My mother thought she was too provocative to be on prime time television and sent us kids to bed early every time she appeared on The Love Boat.

Wouldn't it be interesting if, after all these years, Charo revealed herself to be a man.

When I used to do volunteer work, I knew an old lady (in her 90s) who was up on all of the gossip circa 1935 - 1975. She claimed that Charo was close to pushing 70 (and that was about 10 years ago). My friend died 7 years ago, so that's how I remember when she told me.

For once all that old gossip she told me is coming in handy! For example, I know waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much about Cugat from everything she told me.

I saw her about 6 months ago in a Beverly Hills building that has a lot of doctors/plastic surgeons. She had a big scarf around her neck and some kind of hat, but I could tell it was her. She said hi to a Mexican but not me in the hallway. She had a cold so maybe she was there because she was sick and not getting a touch up.

I’m guessing 1941. My Aunt used to go to the Catholic Church in Wakaki and would sit in the same row as Charro. My aunt was born in 1930, and Charro looked about 10 years younger. She was also a very nice lady. I used to pick up my aunt after mass and walk he to Dukes for dinner.

What’s happened to her? She dropped off the concert tour circuit about 10 years ago. Must be retired.
