What do we think, DL?
Interesting piece on him on CBS Sunday Morning. Also talked about "best friend" Eddie Murphy and Arsenio's life as a "single dad" but no mention of the mom.....
Things that make you go....hmmmmm........
I hope he has Vanilla Ice on as guest as kind of a trip down memory lane when Aresenio busted that wigger for lying about his background.
Anybody who was anybody in the entertainment biz was on Arsenio's old show back in the day. Even A-Listers who at that time didn't really do talk shows, like Tom Cruise and Madonna. I've occasionally checked out old Arsenio clips on Youtube and what a time capsule of the late 80s/early 90s it is.
I am with R1. I have missed him, actually. His show was the "it" show for a time. Never understood why he disappeared but that CBS Sunday Morning piece made it out that he walked away because he wanted a personal life and away from the stress. I have heard so many stories over the years, though. Like he pissed off all the wrong people by having Louis Farrakhan on and the powers that be "got rid" of his show with threats of who knows what. I am glad he is back. It sort of feels "right" that he has a show again. This could be something cool. Again.
R3, President Clinton was a guest
R4, he disappeared because Letterman moved to CBS and affiliates dropped his show.
R7, that was riveting TV. But Arsenio allowed the whole exchange to air.
Lea Delaria has said that she owes everything to Arsenio and that he allowed him to be her good ole dyke self on the show.
With him and Latifah back...
so glad he's back. I hope his show does well. I'd love it if Letterman and Leno went off the air. Those 2 are unfunny and stale. I'm shocked people love them so much.
r7 That altercation was classic. But QueerNation were pretty embarrassing.. the best they could come up with was Gus Van Sant (?!?) who only 4 people would have heard of.
The most telling part was the first thing Arsenio did was alluded straight away to all the closeted guests "who don't like to talk about it". Sadly nothing has changed really on that front, those may be the dark ages but some things never change.
Yay for the defender of the Black Gay Closet!
r5 I hope Clinton turns up, for old times sake.
Arsenio's new show promises to revolutionize the talk show format. In addition to his monologue, there will be celebrity interviews, cooking segments, and fitness demonstrations.
I'd be happy if Arsenio did what he did before, and booked people we don't see very much on the other shows.
WHY is this poor, sad, likely near broke closet queen back?
The late show thing is saturated. Even in the Sunday Morning piece, he LOOKS like the early 90s, his set looks like the early 90s... and he's even still doing that tired stance that he did, where he likes to come out on stage with his legs spread, head down, fingering a kiss to the audience before doing that tired, 90s fist pump thing.
What's next, an Allan Thicke talk show? Shoulder pads? Christ, whoever greenlit this shit and is bankrolling it is due for a major let down.
DL's black racist is all over this thread.
He remains close friends with Clay Aiken since Celebrity Apprentice. I often wondered about that friendship. Clay was in the closet for a long time.
R17, I think you are wrong. Oh, and your caftan has a little shit stain on the back.
Ooh! R20 done read R17!
R17 is the same one who kept insisting that OWN would be off the air last year.
I love the look
His reaction makes more sense if he is on the DL. It was a stupid question, but his response was off the charts.
Who exactly is Arsenio with these days? Is he still bearding or does he have a little white twink servicing him?
He seems nice enough but I don't find him particularly funny or talented.
R5, many say that Clinton's appearance on Arsenio's show is what turned the '92 election in his favor. When he jammed on the sax, he had instant coolness factor, which the young and minority audience immediately recognized as a refreshing alternative to Bush, Sr.
Arsenio was such a hit because he had guests that Carson and even Letterman wouldn't give the time of day to. Young hip-hop and rap artists, openly gay performers etc. A much younger and hipper fan base.
R28 is right.
Can't stand him, never could.
He was cool and irreverent for his time. He also did a good bit of f@g humor (sissy imitations etc.) and was friends with Ms. Eddie Murphy (homophobe).
During these years when no president mentioned Aids or even gay people, Qweet Nation had enough and protested.
Araenio's show ended because it got old, ran out of steam and his closet got too obvious.
He claims to have a son.
Talk about the immaculate conception. Or The Immaculate Collection (into a petri dish).
He does have a son, he looks just like Arsenio, just lighter in coloring.
I would love it if he crammed his size 12s into some stiletto fuck-me pumps and sheer pantyhose. Red toe nail polish would be extra hot.
I loved it when he busted in on Janet during the RN tour rehearsals.
Celebrities did his show because he had very high Q in the 18-49 range when Carson skewed much older and Letterman was on too late. He was know for the soft ball interview. Hall gained fame when Eddie Murphy declared there were no other funny black comedians other than he and Richard Pryor. Hall publicly called out Murphy who befriended Hall and put him in his movies.
Hall took over the Joan Rivers show when she left. He was just supposed to fill out the end of the contract but ended up being popular and getting ratings so they gave him a show.
He was famously skewered by Kenon Ivory Wayans in a skit where he had "Hi Eddie" taped to the bottom of his shoes.
I have friends who were in the audience for the vanilla ice incident. It was Arsenio's attempt to reclaim his street cred so to speak. Ice was an easy target. WHen the cameras were off, Ice went off on Hall who backed off like a pussy and got security to escort Ice out.
Despite Letterman moving to CBS, Hall was still successful on fox. Rumor has it he left because he was "sick" He still looks "sick"
Hall was still successful on Fox, R37, but then CBS gave Pat Sajak a show and Chevy Chase got one on Fox. That squeezed out Hall's show.
Roseanne always referred to him as Arse.
Did he and Nia have a fling?
It's weird to hear him talk about quitting the show. It got stale and then canceled.
Prince always did great performances.
I recall him presenting a birthday cake to Kirstie alley and she shoved a piece in his face. They ended up smearing the cake all over each other, rolling around on the floor. Unexpected and funny.
When does his new show start ?
He seems like a likable guy overall and I'll be interested to see if he changes up some of his old mannerisms.
The only thing I'm dreading is the possible return of that obnoxious 'dog pound' audience response every time someone comes on stage. (The "woof woof" chant and arm pump)
I HATED that and also hated that it seemed to be the 'new normal' as an audience response for a few years back in the 90's at large events.
His eyes are very jaundiced, and pupils look cloudy and dilated. Is he sick?
that was the rumor why he left r44 - his health was declining. I guess he got the Magic Johnson cure.
"I'd be happy if Arsenio did what he did before"
Taking 40 min. to get the show started? Staring vacantly into the guest's face while they tried to interest him in something other than himself?
Guests flocked to be on his show because he was an airhead and asked fluffy questions. He didn't probe their closets and pathetic personal lives.
I'm sure he'll be a smash!
Arsenio is OK. I wonder if he is a top or a bottom though? Does he swallow?
I have to admit I'm enjoying the new show but it does seem like the 90s again.
He looks odd though. Like an alien head.
I really wanted to like his show because his 90's show was good, but I watched one episode last week and it was TERRIBLE. He is simply not funny anymore and/or needs better writers.
He looked odd in the episodes of the new series--waxy like he was ill or getting some weird variation on RuPaul's vaseline on the camera soft focus. He obviously was older but was trying to recreate his old show. That would work if he was Letterman who has always been a nasty grouch, but instead he just looked an old guy trying to be hip.
