If you had to find a celebrity in LA, how long would it take you and where would you go to spot one?
(I'm talking about a public encounter, not knocking on their front door or office, or taking a studio tour or something)
I've been going to LA half a dozen times a year for 20 years and I don't think I've ever seen a single one.
Starbucks at the Beverly Center.
It's been some time since I've spotted a big celebrity, but I once saw Christina Aguilera at Chipotle.
Bristol Farms, upscale grocery, down the street from Beverly Center (Beverly & Doheny). Almost everyday, Hallie Berry is there (she lives up the street, on Doheny), as well as many other stars. I have seen Diana Ross several times, across the street from BF, at Ralphs - she too lives up, off Doheny, closeby.
The Polo Lounge.
Earthbar in West Hollywood
In traffic is my experience. On my two trips to LA I've seen 50 Cent, Richard Simmons, Melanie Mayron (well, she used to be a celebrity) and some soap star, who's name escapes me at the moment, all driving around in LA.
Once I thought I saw Helen Mirren drive by in a white Mini.
I have a friend who sees Jodie Foster all the time (I didn't ask where).
Walk along Robertson ( between Beverly & Burton Way) anyday, and you'll see some young , female star - shopping at Kitson, or lunching on The Ivy patio.
Every time I've been shopping at the Beverly Center, I've seen celebs in the various stores.
The Sunset Tower Hotel in West Hollywood seems to be the hottest spot lately for celebs.
Melrose Avenue (between La Brea and Fairfax)
Restaurants in Malibu
The Grove, Polo Lounge at Beverly Hills Hotel, Urth Cafe (on Melrose), Marix in WeHo ( Jen Aniston is there all the time for lunch).
The Ivy, Nobu, Bar Marmont, The Beverly Wilshire, Cecconi's, Fig & Olive, Dan Tana's, Kitson, Fred Segal, The Grove/Farmer's Market, Robertson Blvd, Sunset Plaza, Runyon Canyon, etc.
Try the Hollywood Arclight on Friday and Saturday nights. Plenty of celebs seeing movies with the masses.
Patio lunch at Joan's on Third.
Whole Foods on 3rd St.
Definitely the Grove
Any breakfast place on 3rd St or along Santa Monica Blvd between La Cienega and around Kings.
Runyon Canyon, the Santa Monica stairs
The bar in the Sunset Marquis (ran into George Clooney and Green Day in one night)
Hollywood movie premieres, obviously. People sit there on Hollywood Blvd from 8 AM waiting across the street to get a glimpse of stars walking the carpet that night.
I once saw Glenn Close at an assisted living facility in Panorama City.
Heidi Fleiss was at the next table at Ivy Santa Monica.
The best part of seeing them at the Beverly Center is that you don't have to buy anything as you would inside a restaurant.
Every time I go to LA, I practically trip over them. I've seen/met/stood next to: Seann William Scott, Mary Tyler Moore, Damon Wayans, Rhea Perlman, Cheech Marin, Mary Kay Place, Brad "Shelter" Rowe, Vince Van Patten, The Rock, Selma Blair, Aaron Neville, Meagan Mullally, Bill Nighy, Dominick Dunne, and a few who's names I'm too lazy to remember now--the original Mason from Santa Barbara, the big African American guy from Reno 911, Lex from Smallville, the cute guy that was on Veronica Mars and Private Practice...most of them were around Beverly Hills or Melrose, but a lot were just at random places. We went to a couple of "trendy" expensive restaurants and didn't see any stars.
I've seen Venus Williams, Drew Carey, Sally Struthers, Wanda Sykes, and others shopping in our neighborhood Ralphs. Sally Struthers was the funniest - she was buying toilet paper and vodka.
I run into celebrities all the time at Matt Damon's house. Also, Ashton entertains most Sundays.
R23 = Matt Damon's cleaning staffer
The lawn in front of jasmine Guy's house.
Matt hasn't even moved in yet r23.
R24, Would you mind terribly coming by the San Remo and douche my ass?
The Grove, Arclight
You have to go where they get together in a big herd.
He did, R26, in April. Now if you will excuse me, please. R24 is here.
Don't you have some toilets to scrub, R30?
[quote]Every time I go to LA, I practically trip over them. I've seen/met/stood next to . . .
Thats why I started this thread. I've been to many of the places mentioned, The Grove and the Farmer's Market is almost my home base, and like I said, not a single sighting.
I'm starting to think that I'm just clueless, but when I used to go to NYC a lot, I would see famous people constantly.
Like all things in life, if you look too hard you'll never see.
I always encounter celebs when I least expect it, doing mundane thing like grocery shopping and going to the post office. (in the Post Office I have seen Danny Glover, Estelle Getty and ... again ... Sally Struthers)(who drives a PT Cruiser, btw)
My parents live near Timothy Olyphant. Last time I was visiting he was riding bikes w/ his kids through the neighborhood.
At Matt Damon's one day Sally Struthers came by, used up all the toilet paper in the 16 bathrooms, and drank all the Vodka Casey Affleck had been hiding for his brother.
She won't be welcomed back.
I've lived in the area since 1987 and can count on the fingers of one hand the number of times I've seen celebs "in the wild." Of course I live way east of downtown and don't frequent the stars' watering holes.
OP--When celebrities are out going about their lives they are often unnoticed or (at least in NYC) treated as if they weren't noticed. I was on line at a Daffy's and missed John Stewart at the next register. (Someone with me was paying more attention.)
The UCLA psychiatric ward- I was a resident there and we always had celeb patients
Also Montana Avenue , between 10th-16th Streets, in Santa Monica. I lived near there and there were always celebs shopping and eating there
r37 is right. When I was a cashier in a store in LA I saw famous people all day long. Now I only see them once in a while. They are there but you just don't notice them.
r38 is also correct. I knew a guy who worked at a place for troubled teens. He saw all the a-listers coming in to visit their offspring.
I think a lot of celebs go to the Abbey. I met Anna Nicole there a short while before she died...she was in one of those private cabanas in the back during gay pride. Howard (her murderer) was with her. She was a fucking train wreck. I also saw one of the guys from Queer Eye (don't know his name), Bruce Vilanch and James Getzlaff from Boy Meets Boy there lol
Sally Struthers owns this thread.
Lots of good suggestions posted here, OP. Amoeba Music in Hollywood is another place you might find actors and musicians browsing the aisles. The Virgin Megastore on Sunset was a great place for celebrity spotting before it closed years ago - once rode the elevator from the parking garage with Leonardo DiCaprio and whatever model he was dating at the time.
In the past I've seen a lot of celebs at Century City shopping mall but I don't go there much anymore - maybe they've all migrated to the Grove as I have. 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica is another place I usually see some level of current or former celebrity.
I've seen Thomas Roberts at the Abbey, drunk off his ass in the early evening several times. Dude has a MAJOR booze problem.
We met - and spoke briefly with - Bruce Villanch at the Bette Midler show at Staples Center in 1999.
She was very nice to us.
I once saw Piper Lauie and Jason Gould (Barbra's son) at an Ear Nose and Throat doctor. It was like I was in the center of the gay universe.
Has anyone ever seen Timberlake around?
Va voom sha bang
Grocery stores and coffee places in West Hollywood, Malibu and the Valley.
Farmers' markets. The celebs will be dressed down, so harder to spot unless 3 guys w/ long lenses are staking them out from a conspicuous distance.
Plastic surgery offices.
the west valley is like the answer to WHET----they are in there shopping with their kids
r47, my friend worked out next to Timberlake at Crunch in West Hollywood years ago. This was right after NSYNC broke up and he went solo. Said he focused on his workout and then left alone. No locker room story.
Thanks r53, even though your story didn't end with him getting pile-drivered in the steamroom
R45-Welcome back MPC! We missed you.
On our trips to LA, we spotted celebs at Barney's (inside the store and in the restaurant), walking around Beverly Hills shopping streets, and in restaurants like Ivy at the Shore. The pool area of the Roosevelt hotel is also a fab place to celeb spot, as is the Tower bar restaurant at the Sunset Tower hotel.
LOL. "But LA is so vapid," says the guy who wants to find lame ass celebs. Don't blame us, blame you. You make our town fucking idiotic, not us.
You sound like a prize yourself, R57
If I had to pick one place I'd be most likely to see a celebrity it would be Chateau Marmont. I've had lunch there on the patio maybe four times and every time save once we saw someone famous.
The Ivy would be my second choice except the celebs you're likely to see there are just loathsome.
I used to run into Sean Cody, Corbin Fisher, and the old site Straight College Men models all the time at the beach back when I lived in San Diego.
The Griddle on Sunset Blvd. Every time I go I see Ian Ziering. Someone told me he's part-owner. I realize he stretches the definition of "celebrity" but I've seen others there as well.
Used to see a lot of Days actors at the Burbank Airport.
I'm an escort, so the place to see them usually is my place or theirs. And since I'm stuck in a "complete discretion" situation, I don't see them when I'm out and about - by contract. And they don't see me.
Do you actually have a contract, R46?
Hey r64, did you ever pile-driver Timberlake
I saw Teri Hatcher last time I was there.
I've been to a few of the places mentioned when I've visited L.A., but never saw any celebs there.
I have seen them in NYC. I once saw Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick shopping in the old (gone) Colony Records.
I've seen dozens celebrities the two times I stayed at the Beverly Hills Hotel. I saw them in the lobby, the Polo Lounge, by the pool, and in the little coffee shop. I sat next to Ellen DeGeneres in the coffee shop for lunch. She was majorly depressed. Such negative energy. A MAJOR foreign male pop star and his hunky friend tried to pick me up in the lobby of the hotel.
I've always seen celebrities at Mr. Chow's restaurant in Beverly Hills.
Eat at Mastro's. Have seen Tommy Girl Cruise, Jack Black, Neil Pat, and Rhi Rhi. And that was just on a Tuesday.
Ralph's market on Ventura Blvd. and Coldwater in Studio City. I've seen Jodie Foster there. Loads of stars shop there, Jon Voight, Wanda Sykes, Harry Hamlin, etc.
Casa Vega on Ventura Blvd. and Fulton in Sherman Oaks: George Clooney, Anne Hathaway, Rene Zellweger. I saw Marlon Brando there once. When George Clooney started going there it turned into celebrity central.
I saw Sally Struthers at the Goodwill on Victory Blvd.
I saw Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw on Santa Monica during the Halloween party when hey close the street about 10 years ago. They were just walking through looking at the costumes; thy were not dressed up
I was a beauty queen being attacked by bats that year. It was not good.
Malibu Country Mart in July (around the 4th) crawling with celebs. I saw Nick Nolte a few years ago. Many "who's that guy" types at Marmalade. I recognize the faces sometimes and can't think of a name. But the shop worker always see people (one told me a story about waiting on Cher regularly). If you spend a few hours it seems inevitable that you would see the famous people. Although once you see them there isn't much to do. I stared at Nolte for a few minutes and he started yelling at me which turned it from a brush with fame into a brush with crazy.
Trader Joe's in Studio City. Over the years, I've seen Ryan Gosling, Steve Carell, Jane Lynch, Lucy Liu, Henry Rollins, Andre from Oukast, Steve Perry, and hundreds of t.v. and soap actors.
Hamberger Hamlet XP on Larchmont.
Mr. Chow Beverly Hills
Cheesecake Factory BH
The beverly center or farmers market near CBS you can see soap stars up the ying yang.
I've seen Cher, every single one of those skanky Kardashians (at different times), Britney, Sharon Osbourne, Harry Hamlin and Lisa Rinner, and Lisa Marie Presley at the Calabasas Commons.
I almost ran over the guy who played "The Fonz" when I was in Beverly Hills. He walked out between two parked cars. The tires squeeled, he jumped out of the way, and then he smiled and waved at me. I almost killed the Fonz.
Bootsey Bellows on Sunset is one popular club.
I'm an independent but work through referrals. And a contract, which is primarily a non-disclosure agreement, is a routine part of the deal with celebrities and others with positions in the business. I have my own boilerplate (assuring discretion and being business-like up front is considered an asset) but you'd be surprised at how many have their own already drawn up. Of course it's all forgotten once the meet-up happens. Business is a mood killer so it's handled in the pre-meet, which is typical for the biggest names.
No, from what I hear Timberlake hasn't worked with escorts of either sex. He's publicity shy. And I hear he's playing it straight at the moment. The old rumors were about him "getting too stoned to know what was happening" and going along with the action when "out of it." That supposedly was his cover with the brothers, who don't talk in any event. This was from staff.
I used to see famous people all the time at Peet's Coffee on Montana in Santa Monica. I saw Helen Hunt with her child and girlfriend (she thought I was making eye contact with her when I was just looking for a table and looked in her direction, she gave me a nervous don't look at me look, and I just rolled my eyes at her), Madeline Stowe ( would always stare at me), Donald Sutherland (really cool person),Paul Haggis, etc. I never saw him, but the staff said Michael Keaton was there a lot and they would make a big point of saying his full name very loudly when his coffee was ready because he was always trying so hard to be incognito. I saw Britney and K Fed clowning around in Santa Monica. I saw Lindsay Lohan when she was still just starting out hanging with her friends in one of those covered bed like things at the standard in Hollywood. And Larry Fishburne scowled at me as he was being driven in a golf cart when I was walking by at USC. I was still star struck though. I heard stories about Cuba Gooding jr as a regular in some bar in santa Monica picking up on UCLA coeds.
Now in NYC I've virtually seen no one famous and I was always in soho, TriBeCa, ues and uws. One time I sat next to Cicely Tyson at a. Raw food restaurant and we had a lovely conversation and I saw Dianne Carroll in the lobby of my sister's building. I did a double take and she scowled at me too! She looked incredible though. I think I just don't recognize stars when I'm in NYC . My sister used to see Jerry Seinfeld all the time in UWS near her apt. I saw the Talk talent when they were outside taping a show at Lincoln Center and greeting fans. Sharon O. Was very gracious to her fans.
The most reliable places to bump into them for me were the Whole Foods at Fairfax and Sta Monica and the Arclight and Runyan. But you would see them just about everywhere if you were out of the house long enough. I think more people have facial blindness than realize it; you've probably brushed up against many famousers without noticing.
Tell us more, R81. When you're with celebrities do they expect special treatment? Do you feel like you ever experience the real person, or is it all an act?
I saw Lindsey Lohan turn cartwheels down the length of Sunset Blvd wearing a skirt with no panties.
R69, who tried to pick u up?
Do most of these celebrities look short? Better on film? Give us flyover denizens some details as we will never have our brush w fame.
[quote]I think more people have facial blindness than realize it; you've probably brushed up against many famousers without noticing.
Very true. You'd be surprised how different many celebrities look in person. Just downright ordinary and nondescript when they're not in the hands of a stylist or wardrobe person.
How you can spot an actress is by how tiny they are. It is quite noticeable. But generally speaking, their faces are unremarkable.
OP=Lucy Ricardo. Why not try The Brown Derby? You might run into Eve Arden or William Holden.
Read Just Jared and you will see where the paps hang out to get pictures of celebrities.
Saw Elijah Wood coming out of Out Of The Closet in Hollywood. Strange. Looked like he was shopping with his mommy.
Saw Channing Tatum in Westwood. OMG he's fucking hot. Hot! He ducked into the mall/movie theater combo with some boring looking frau. He wears a t-shirt like it's skin. Drool.
Spotted Gillian Anderson in a Bev Hills Starbucks. She was with a curvy black woman. You should've seen the ass on this woman. My god. Both were loud and bossy. The black woman couldn't even order her latte without mentioning she was a model in her loud Brit voice. Being with a closet celeb isn't enough?
Justice Blackstone and Retif la Bretonne at the Ramada in WeHo pool.
Ghengis Khan on the pier.
Twenty-plus years ago I worked at the Hamburger Hamlet on Sunset & Doheny. Famous people eat there all the time (or did),but Sunday night was busyer than Sat. Celebrities give their help Sundays off. I guess instead of cooking they go out.
The Hamlet is pretty casual ( and good) so lots of tourists trying to spot celebs.
Mika's Salon - Anal Bleaching Center
Giorgios at The Standard.
And of course, the best and only place to see celebrities. AA meetings. It's ground zero for celebrity sightings.
R93, the Hamlet has been closed for over a year and a new restaurant has opened in its place.
I've always seen celebrities at Katana on Sunset Blvd in West Hollywood. Members from the band Journey dine there often. I was hosting a group of international journalists one night, and they recognized some of the band. Journey saw us looking at them and motioned for me to come over. I joked and said "we're wondering if you guys are in a band?" and he said come here have you heard this song? and sang Don't Stop Believin to us in front of everyone at the restaurant.
Plenty of celebs go to opening night of any play in downtown LA like the Mark Taper Forum. I took my mom to the opening of DL fav Robin Weigert's "Other Desert Cities" and it was a scattering of soap stars, B/C list celebs. My mom nearly had a heart attack seeing some of her favorites from GH in person. We also saw Peter McNichol, Camryn Manheim, and several others.
I worked for a show at the Kodak Theatre (now Dolby) in Hollywood and we'd get celebs at least once a week. Nicest was Usher, the guys from Breaking Bad, Halle Berry, worst was Christina Aguilera. Others I've met are Tyra Banks, Taye Diggs, Jack Nicholson, Coach Beast from Glee and her hot wife and their kids, Jennette McCurdy.
Thanks, R96, haven't been out there for many years. Did all the Hamlets close?
Once when I was working the counter Madonna called for take-out. My coworkers told me I'd know it was her when she'd give the name Lulu.
This was the spring of 1991.
R84, everyone's different. And I don't mean to sound like I am the Fucker to the Stars, but one satisfied customer tends to make referrals, because of the risks and such. And I would have to ask you if you feel like you are connecting with "the real person" in cases where you have a casual sexual encounter with a stranger.
When I see someone more steadily for a while - and while some have called for years most move on to "something new" after 4-5 visits - I get to know them better, just like they get to know me. I don't reconnect with anyone abusive or dismissive unless that is an overt part of the encounter's dynamics. A lot of these closeted guys are scenario-driven; there are things they like and if they're paying they require it a certain way. I hate the scripting, and also will bow out gently if it's too creepy. I can't be too overt or word of mouth would suffer. Anyway, I have to say there also are plenty of people who end up just being lonely or isolated, and who talk. And that doesn't necessarily mean they are being completely honest - they're actors, after all.
Also, it's not that unusual for it to be a trio or even more. And in those cases it's more like a shoot than a love encounter. I have a couple of other guys in the business who join me or who I join if that's what's wanted. Oddly, it's mostly black clients who dig that. White guys into multiples seem to go more for clusters of twinks, and we're not twinks.
Lindsay Lohan smoking cigarettes inside the Roxy on Sunset despite a no smoking policy. She and some friends sat at a booth with a rope blocking them off. She wanted to smoke and the staff didn't or couldn't do anything about it.
A friend of mine used to live in Weho in the 80s, a stone's throw from the Colonial House, where Bette Davis lived. He used to see La Davis all the time standing at the building's entrance, waiting for her car. He said she was always impeccably dressed and of course she was always smoking. People passing by would wave and yell out hello to her, and she would always wave and shout hello back.
My sister used to work at Peets in Santa Monica and saw celebrities on a daily basis. You might want to hang out there for a bit.
R98, there are still 3 Hamlets in the L.A. area: Sherman Oaks, Pasadena and a "Hamlet XP" on Larchmont.
Additionally there are 2 in Maryland. But that's it now.
Sorry, one in Maryland and one in Virginia.
Back in the 90's Dean Martin ate at the Hamburger Hamlet every sunday (the one on Sunset).
The Brown Derby's literally crawling with stars - also poolside at the Beverly Palms Hotel. Lots of celebrity wives are usually in the Don Loper Salon.
Hey R105?! I worked at the HH on Sunset in 1991-92.
The guy who trained me is the guy whose roommate tricked with Richard Gere.
He picked him up in the parking lot of Studio One,and pretended he wasn't Richard Gere! Then proceeded to take the roommate to the multi-million $$$ estate that had just been featured in the L A Times!
This was right at the time he & Cindy Crawford had taken out simultaneous full page ads in the LAT & NYT denying they were gay!
At that time Crawford could be found hanging at a pretty well known lesbian bar in WEHO called The Palms most weekends.
We need a NYC thread!
Where does Perez Hilton hang out? He is sooooo sexy.
Back when I read Perez, he told the world that his "office" was a specific coffee house.
Perez, if you're here, please tell your one fan where he can find you.
I'm not Perez, but it was the Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf on Sunset, next to what is now The Counter, R110.
But he stopped hanging out there years ago.
We saw Mel Gibson eating at Morton's in February 1989.
As we walked by Mel, with our parents who were taking us out to dinner, we mentioned that that was Mel Gibson, to which our mother responded: "Who is that?"
I can't believe in over 110 replies no one has mentioned Beverly Glen Center, at the top of Bel Air. In just the past couple years, I've seen Warren Beatty, Annette Benning ( separately), Jon Voight, Stephanie Powers, Robert Blake (he's a constant there, in black t-shirt, & jeans, with black leather fronts -same outfit, always), Brian Wilson, Englebert Humperdinck - looking ancient, Loni Anderson, Salma Hayek, Pia Zadora ( she was singing at the club, Vibratto, that night, and rehearsing, Kyle Richards, Johnny Hallyday - he owns a house across the street, Hillary Duff, etc. May not all be the biggest names, but it's a very small mall, with only about 10-15 stores & restaurants - you almost always spot someone famous, in the 3-asile parking lot.
How about celebrity spotting in Santa Barbara?
All sorts of celebrities have houses in Montecito, any tips or stories?
I'll be there next week
Joyce DeWitt at a Dollar Tree in Winnetka.
[quote]from what I hear Timberlake hasn't worked with escorts of either sex. He's publicity shy. And I hear he's playing it straight at the moment. The old rumors were about him "getting too stoned to know what was happening" and going along with the action when "out of it." That supposedly was his cover with the brothers, who don't talk in any event. This was from staff.
r81, please come back and spill more on those old rumors that are new to me! Who was he 'going along with' in that scenario?
R81 You use the word stoned regarding Timberfake. I would speculate he is on some harder shit. Man, if you look at his eyes at any number of candids on a night out, his eyes are literally popping out of his head. Strangely tabloids or readers ignore he looks wired all the damn time. But it were Lohan or Brit they sure would say something. I tell ya, Timberlake's handlers are second to none.
James Van Der Beek at Vons in Burbank buying a cake that said "Happy Birthday Bitch!"
Which celebs live in Maryland and Virginia?
DC area - Lynda Carter
Charlottesville - Sissie Spacek
"James Van Der Beek at Vons in Burbank buying a cake that said "Happy Birthday Bitch!"
LOL--I hope it was for a gay friend. The party must have been something else if so.
Maybe it was for his mom..
A couple of days ago I saw William H Macy and Felicity Huffman walking down the street with their daughter. It looked like they had just picked her up from school. Later that evening I sat next to Rachel Zoe's makeup guy (joey?) at Fig and Olive. He was at the table next to ours.
r107 my room mate worked in lorimar casting with a girl who was part time at HH. I actually heard that story. I also got cruised by Anthony Hamilton in the bathroom the first time we went there. I was peeing at the urinal he came in and took the one right next to me, He was very tall so I looked up and to my right and he was staring at my cock and grinning ear to ear. I was 18, so little did I know I could have fucked this shit out of him in the stall lol.
Saw Laura Dern at the AA Admirals Club, at LAX the other day. She was so TALL. Seemed very sweet however. Very friendly.
