Will we witness anything like the 1968 Olympics Black Power Salute in Russia?
The 1968 Olympics Black Power salute was an act of protest by the African-American athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos during their medal ceremony at the 1968 Summer Olympics in the Olympic Stadium in Mexico City. As they turned to face their flags and hear the American national anthem, they each raised a black-gloved fist and kept them raised until the anthem had finished.
Smith, Carlos and Australian silver medalist Peter Norman all wore human rights badges on their jackets. In his autobiography, Silent Gesture, Tommie Smith stated that the gesture was not a "Black Power" salute, but a "human rights salute". The event is regarded as one of the most overtly political statements in the history of the modern Olympic Games.
NBC won't air it. Remember everything will be on tape delay. They'll be careful not to rock the boat.
It will be a double snap, like the "Boys on Film" used to give on "In Living Color."
I hope someone has the courage to do something. And the networks should definitely air it. Russia wants more than anything for these Olympics to be a success. Well then, stop treating people in such a violent manner.
NBC News is there to cover the news. And with people being brutalized, this is fucking news.
The salute will be called, "Get her."
Two snaps and a twist, bitches.
If the IOC needs to take a stand right now. Forcing the athletes to submit to a bigoted hateful law would be the last straw.
The IOC can be the hero or they can be fascists. The Olympics can never openly support this kind of repression again.
R7. In China, there was the vague accusations of "human rights violations" for political dissidents. I'm not saying it's right, but those types of injustices can be dismissed as our governemtn and our freedom of speech versus the Communist government and a more closed society without freedom of speech.
However, these brutal laws against gays are an entirely different story. NBC doesn't have to threaten to do an expose on Russia and this violence, but it can cover targeted, unequal treatment of one group of people especially if one or more athletes come forward to protest.
Instead of a clenched fist it will be a limp wrist?
r6 Thank you, Alec Mapa.
We are perfecting the KGB: Kitschy Gay Bootypop
It would be great if there were widespread protests by both gay and straight athletes.
We won't be watching.
It is a corporate event first and foremost. IOC, NBC, and others won't give a damn as long as the advertisers and the sponsors of the top athletes are happy. If Saudi Arabia or some other uber-rich Gulf country threw a shitload of money on a vanity procet that the Olympics really are, nobody among them would care that in those countries women are treated like dirt. Gay rights are even lower on their list of priorities as long as the boat is not being rocked.
Olympians planning to paint their fingernails in rainbow colors.
Rainbow fingernail polish.
R16, that's why NBC will be off in our house for the duration of the Olympics.
Oh, wait, when might it have been on?
"If the IOC needs to take a stand right now. "
They did. Their stance is, "We are the saggy desperate whores of the Russian mafia government and will punish any athletes who defy our fascist overlords."
[quote] The IOC can be the hero or they can be fascists
They've always been fascists. Why would they stop now?
I wonder how all this Russian homophobia will affect ticket sales. Will Russia have to give away tickets in order to fill the stands?
r22 They'll have people lining up, don't worry. Hell, there are gay people on this very site who say they will watch the games.
Meanwhile, the US Olympic Committee has ordered our athletes to shut up and comply with Russian law.
I wouldn't be surprised if there are a number of protests during the games, and it could turn violent. But will it be covered by the news?
Ten days before the Mexico City Olympics, there was a protest by students and poor citizens that the government crushed, killing an official count of 43 people, though activists claim the number was well into the hundreds. The incident was barely mentioned by the national OR the foreign press.
Most of the figure skaters are ironically very conservative, many are religious nuts.
It would be like the track athletes in the Summer Olympics. I wouldn't expect much from people like that who praise Jesus after every race.
There could be some protesting from skiers/snowboarders who tend to be more liberal.
Here, in Canada, the speed skating team used to consist (and maybe still does?) of fundies from the Prariries. There were a couple of female speed skaters, Catriona LeMay Doan being the most prominent one, who would bleat about being good Christians, being born-again, etc, every time they were being interviewed. And that's an athlete from a country that's considered very socially progressive. So, no, I don't think that the athletes will display some huge show of support for gay rights when many of them probably sympathize, secretly or not, with Russian bigots.
R22, we intend to turn off NBC and MSNBC entirely for the duration.
The gay athletes could put their black gloved fists into each others bums while on the podium.
r28 has it.
Just don't watch. NBC only cares about profit-if no one watches, it will be a disaster for them.
In the run-up, a few good leaks in the Guardian and other places about what life is really like in Russia for gays and others, would help.
I think there will be all sorts of rainbow and Pride things happening. In 1968, there was no social media and it took awhile for people to get news. Today, with social media and instant news, the Russkies won't be able to keep up.
Here is a suggestion that would PISS off alot of Russians.
The Russian style of Orthodox crossing ones self is not an open hand like the Roman Catholics but the thumb, index and middle finger-tips touching each other with the baby and ring finger bent to the palm. When this is held high like a fist it is instantly recognizable.
Now, if that "troitsa", as it is called, has the index finger and middle finger extended into a victory V with the thumb now wedged in the bottom of the V, you get the old secret Lambda gay signal.
In the dark times before there were gay bars, knowing how to give the gay Lambda was key. In an open bar, all it took was a smile from a stranger and the index finger-tip rested on a chin with a casual move of the thumb to the inside base of the finger creating the Lambda hand sign.
It's like the resurrection of the pink triangle.
Whatever kind of salute, it will involve a limp wrist.
And the flippant fagotty reactions and slimy carping cliche comments here are exactly why nothing will be done for Russian gays.
Go back to your soap threads, weasels. You've never done any form of activism and you never will, you useless queens.
STFU you jackass, R34. You have NO IDEA what anyone in this thread has or has not done, you moron. I'm betting there are plenty who have done a lot more than you've ever done or will ever do for gay rights, you pathetic simpering weasel.
"I'm betting there are plenty who have done a lot more than you've ever done"
You also thought you'd win the Powerball, cuntlick, but that didn't turn out so well, either.
Have you even READ the posts on this thread, you screeching harpy?
Get a fucking clue. Prove that you've done anything, or Shut The Fuck Up.
R35, the Great Activist, posts threads about women Scientologist soap opera actresses.
Really, bitch. Do fuck off.
[quote]Have you even READ the posts on this thread, you screeching harpy?
The screeching harpy is in your mirror, woman. You must have gotten lost on your way to iVillage. Clutch your pearls and get on back there.
No one should be holding their breath waiting for many of the athletes to be involved in any sort of protest. By their very competitive nature it is all about themselves - or their team at the most.
I've already stopped drinking Stoli - what more can you expect me to do?
R40, turn off NBC and MSNBC and do not visit their sites during the Games.
STFU, R38, you simpering queen.
You think you're an activist? Posting a few snarky -and completely erroneous snitty remarks; I'm more gay and male than you'll ever suck off in your usual rest stop- here while linking a meme du jour jpg?
You start threads about soap actresses who are Scientology cult members!
You queens could start by not posting links to crappy appropriated gay "news" on that shitty site Queerty, which, like its partner Gaycities, is sponsored by Stoli.
But no, you can resist! You switch booze brands and think yourself the gay Rosa Parks.
Send us a pic when you've protested outside a Russian consulate, signed a dozen online petitions and shared it with all your friends.
Better yet, cuntress 31, 35, 38, etc, etc, go back to your soap threads and junk food idiocy.
It'd awful, but as horrible as this is, I simply don't think much will happen outside of a few athletes making minor protests (rainbow emblems, nail polish, etc.)
Most (not all) athletes aren't willing to give up their stake in the Olympics, some are probably actually conservative and don't give a fuck. It's all corporate now, and no one wants to rock the boat - sponsors, television providers, athletes.
We'll be watching Weekend Today, R42, so we can see you with your picket sign at 2650 Wisconsin Ave NW, in DC. And when you arrive in Moscow next week, please post here again to provide us with the result of your talks with Vlad.
Would that effete sarcasm were a weapon, R45, then you could rule the world.
Have another cocktail or twelve.
Someone should hack the PA system and play It's Raining Men instead of the Russian anthem during gold medal ceremonies.
That's a great idea R47 and it's doable. Anything that will embarrass the Russkies is a plus.
It takes me back to when a group of us crashed Fred Phelps' "God Hates Fags" website at the time of Matthew Shepard's funeral. Then, some hackers got in and changed it to God Loves Fags.
Male figure skaters should tongue each other on the podium.
"a group of us crashed Fred Phelps' "God Hates Fags" website"
Bitch, please. You can barely figure out how to forward an email.
R46 - effete? Seems to have gotten your attention.
Would that people could read and understand sarcasm.
So far these threads have been about things other people should do or things individuals can do which require little to no personal sacrifice.
MOSCOW -- The Swedish high jumper who painted her fingernails in rainbow colors to support gay rights has been told she could be in violation of the code of conduct at the world championships, a Swedish track and field official said Saturday.
Anders Albertsson, the general secretary of the Swedish federation, said he didn't know whether Emma Green Tregaro would repeat the nail-painting gesture for Saturday's high jump final at Luzhniki Stadium.
Green Tregaro's decision Thursday was a quiet criticism of a Russian law that bans so-called propaganda supporting homosexuality to minors. Russian pole vault star Yelena Isinbayeva said it showed disrespect to Russia.
"We have been informally approached by the IAAF. They were saying that this was by definition a breach of the regulations, not saying anything else, really," Albertsson said. "We have informed our athletes about this.
"The impression one gets is that this came from her heart. I don't think Emma thought this would be so big."
Isinbayeva's criticism of the Swedish athlete's gesture attracted wide attention because she also said she supported Russia's law and that Russians have "normal" heterosexual relations.
Isinbayeva said the next day she may have been misunderstood because she was speaking in English instead of her native language. She also said she is against discrimination.
R-whatever and alleged website hacker:
Hack the Sochi Olympics official website and Facebook pages, and post the boycott Sochi jpg memes there!
Then get back to us.
Otherwise, you're a lying faker.
Did you learn English as a second language R54? Nobody claimed they were a hacker. Nobody said they had hacked anything. Since when does a description of "some hackers" turn into a person claiming they're a hacker?
Crashing a website in 1998 didn't require hacking. Get off your Web-TV and come up to the 21st century, Hon. Maybe you can learn some reading comprehension.
We've seen three minor protests that got publicity around the globe -- one was a female with fingernails painted in Pride colors, the second was a kiss on the medal stand between two females. Another was a silver medalist who dedicated his medal to gays.
This is just the beginning. By the time of the Olympic games, gays will be making a major impact in Russia.
