I remember her appearance in "Secret of the Incas", and one of her final performances on the David Letterman Show. One of the most repeated rumors was that her stage name was an anagram of her real name, Amy Camus, from Jersey City, NJ! Her voice was interesting, incredible and completely unique. Her turn on Letterman was more than good, considering her age. I was amazed when I saw her, I thought she had gone to Incan heaven years before.
R1 the Amy Camus Rumor was just crazy ass gossip. Yma Sumac was Peruvian.
Her voice was insane! Five octaves, was it?
Thanx for posting that clip, r3 Equal parts Norma Desmond and Juanita Hall, wouldn't you say?
I thought the Amy Camus story was true.
Saw her in FOLLIES at Long Beach Civic Light Opera...
She played HEIDI
250lbs...waddling around...could understand a word she sang or said!
Oh yeah...Karen Morrow, Juliet Prowse, Shani Wallace and of course Dorothy Lamour as Hattie!
Why was Letterman so mean to her? Was she dismissed as camp?
Her name is a bit much.
Her songs in Flahooley are so weird, especially compared to the rest of the score. It somehow works for me though.
We need to find out the inside scoop from Barbara Cook about what she was like to work with.
