Great movie; amazing performances; utterly depressing story.
Especially loved Sharon Stone.
Adam Lambert took his latest squeeze eli lieb to the premier just few days ago.
I have AT&T U-verse and it's already on "Early Premiers"
BTW, so is The Canyons w/Lohan
Sharon Stone always brings it, she's becoming a great grande dame.
I found a Canyon torrent. Watched bis and pieces. Lohan sucked in it. Have to look for a torrent or the one too.
Thank you. I am sublime.
Did Sharon give Mandy tips on technique? (Deep throating, not acting, of course!)
I saw it too. It was...ehh.. Amanda Seyfried was better than I thought she'd be, but still nothing extraordinary. I got pretty bored towards the end of it.
Did Adam Brody do any nudity though?
[quote]Did Sharon give Mandy tips on technique?
Did PETER give Mandy any tips on technique?
Did this really need to be made? Icky subject.
How were the deep throat scenes done? Did Amanda Seyfried actually perform deep throat on a realistic dildo?
I read there wasn't much nudity in this film.
Who portrayed Harry Reems?
Wasn't Linda Lovelace married to the same douchebag who got Marilyn Chambers into porn. The guy was basically a pimp!
Was it based on Linda's life after porn, how she became an anti-porn advocate?
"How were the deep throat scenes done? Did Amanda Seyfried actually perform deep throat on a realistic dildo?"
Not really. It was obscured, either by other characters or her hair.
"I read there wasn't much nudity in this film."
It was mostly just her tits and ass.
"Who portrayed Harry Reems?"
Adam Brody from The OC. He was actually quite good at emulating Harry Reems' acting style.
"Wasn't Linda Lovelace married to the same douchebag who got Marilyn Chambers into porn. The guy was basically a pimp!"
Yes, and yes.
"Was it based on Linda's life after porn, how she became an anti-porn advocate?"
Only about the last fifteen minutes. The film was more of an outline than anything. Not very in-depth.
Thanks R12. I can't picture Adam Brody as Harry Reems!
I probably won't see the film in a theater, I'll wait for it on cable. It's not on my 'must see' list.
I'd actually rather see a documentary on how so many attractive women and men end up in porn.
Good looking women like Janine Lindemuller, who looked a bit like Cindy Crawford when she started in porn, people who surely had other choices.
How and why is porn even choice for a woman who could have been a model?! Granted many female pornstars are disgusting looking, but many could have been models.
There is a softcore actress I occasionally see in those horrible late night Cinemax softcore films and series. I can't remember her name, she's an attractive blond who actually has acting and comedic talent. I have to wonder why getting naked is their only choice. This woman has actual acting talent. There are worse actresses in sitcoms and movies.
I guess it is about having connections. I see fug talent free women like Lena Dunham getting accolades, meanwhile talented actresses end up in softcore porn?
I was also amazed to hear about a former soap actress, IIRC, her last name was McCarthy, who said she did porn after her soap fame, because 'Why not?"
[quote]There is a softcore actress I occasionally see in those horrible late night Cinemax softcore films and series.
They really still make those? I remember watching those in the 80's and 90's, but I haven't had cable in years.
How many Oscar nomonations do you think it will get, OP?
See, haters? I do have a sense of humor!
How about the soft-core actress, who did Emanuelle films, and George Clooney's ex? She did get some legit work through him, right? Didn't she originally go to college to become a teacher?
Oh please Lynn if you'd been invited to the premiere and given a chicken satay you'd be predicting a sweep in every major category!
Adam Brody didn't show any nudity. Peter Saarsgard mooned the camera at one point, but that was about it.
R13, It takes extreme patience, and a financial reserve, to become a model or actress. Many can't take the constant disappointment and rejection; you need to have the skin of a rhino. You also need to be able to see through the non-stop lies. Ever listen to a snooty casting director tell you how to really get into the business? It's even worse if said CD is a failed actor.
In contrast those that run soft-core porn are super salesmen, who make the vulnerable feel like the most desired girls on the planet. Quick money, and sadly drugs, snare others.
I've met beautiful young ladies who think that porn is a quick fix, and a way to catch up on rent. Some realize that the odds of getting legit acting or modelling are way too hard, and require even more sexual degradation than porn.
If the casting couch is as bad as it seems, maybe they figure they can at least get paid and are guaranteed a role. I am thinking most people who go casting couch route, especially women, do not end up with the role anyway.
I think most porn stars are just lazy. It's an easy way to make $$. Although things have gotten so hardcore and dark I would say it takes some serious endurance these days. Maybe it seems easy.
Tori Black on of the few beautiful porn stars said she didn't want to model because she wanted to eat.
I saw a pic of Sharon Stone from Lovelace and she was unrecognizable. Who wants to see someone as beautiful as Stone play a dowdy housewife?
r22 I am a chameleon along with being a star. It is quite an achievement for me to arrive at dowdiness. Subverting my glamour and pulchritude has always been my greatest challenge. But acting requires sacrifice. That's what makes one a star.
Now, I'd like an iced frangelico.
[quote]I saw a pic of Sharon Stone from Lovelace and she was unrecognizable. Who wants to see someone as beautiful as Stone play a dowdy housewife?
Ever think Sharon herself might not want to continue coasting on her looks? There might get to a point where she doesn't want to be in her 60s and have to struggle to look 30!
After all, she is an actress. Perhaps she feels it's time to start taking character roles. If she's now getting parts based on her acting rather than her looks, that would guarantee her acting roles in the future.
[quote]Tori Black on of the few beautiful porn stars said she didn't want to model because she wanted to eat.
What a load of utter crap, most of us with regular jobs are able to eat and survive. Why don't they admit they are nymphomaniacs or exhibitionists who enjoy having sex with a camera running.
People don't wake up in the morning and decide to be in porn, as if it's a stable or normal career. Most pornstars have serious mental issues.
IIRC, Tori Black actually has college degree, so she can't be completely stupid. She needs to admit that she enjoys fucking with a camera running. I think she does a lot of DP. Her parents must be proud.
It's got to be bizarre if her brother, or another family member, rents or downloads a porn with her in it.
R26, Are you aware of the link between porno actresses and the sexually abused? Hyapatia Lee is a prime example. She talked about her stepfather raping her when she was young, and being too afraid to speak up because of her families' economic dependence.
The only people making big money in the sex industry are the pimps.
[quote]Are you aware of the link between porno actresses and the sexually abused? Hyapatia Lee is a prime example. She talked about her stepfather raping her when she was young, and being too afraid to speak up because of her families' economic dependence.
Yes, I am aware.
Do psychiatrists think it can go the other way, a sexually abused person being totally turned off by sex? Become asexual?
I always wonder how sexual abuse can turn a person hyper sexual, it would appear they'd be 'afraid' of sex, since their first sexual experiences were not of a normal nature, being abused by an adult they trust.
How about someone who says they knew they were str8 as a child, but sexual abuse between the ages of 10-13 "turned me gay"? I have a female relative who told me she was str8, until a much older male relative sexually abused her for years. He was a creep, creepy looking and caused other family turmoil.
My mom always told me to never be alone with him, seems the family suspected he was a pedophile, but no one stepped up to report the bastard. My mom and I were always close, I knew she herself didn't even want to be near him. I vividly remember the body language when she was around him. No she wasn't abused by him, he was relative through marriage, he wasn't part of the family very long. He appeared to always want to be around the small kids. ugh
I was shocked to hear about the abuse my female relative endured, she told me this in her 30s, now she's in her 40s. The pervert is long dead. My mom also thinks he abused a little boy his wife babysat for.
At the age she told me the abuse started, I assume most children are already aware that inappropriate touching by any adult is not normal.
Regarding sexual abuse: For a kid who grew up being sexually abused, porn is a step up in the world. Of course they're still screwing creeps, but they're getting paid good money for it, they can turn down roles if they choose, and they can leave and go to a home where they're safe. In a home where there's sexual abuse there's no safety, no privacy, and no saying "no".
And yes, some people who are sexually abused completely turn off sex. As to those who become "hypersexual", I have two theories. 1) They think sex is the only reason anyone would value them. Or 2) They're so numb they don't care whether they do or not. If you ask a hit on a person with either mindset, they'll say "yes".
This was Sharon Stones best performance since Casino.
The ones who become hypersexual due to abuse do so because they can control it. They felt out of control during the abuse so when they are older, they act out more sexually because they are "taking" control back.
I'm dating someone now who was abused and is highly sexual. It's all about control. That's also why they do porn if they were abused. They are getting paid, but they are also in control of their own sexual choices.
R29, "At the age she told me the abuse started, I assume most children are already aware that inappropriate touching by any adult is not normal."
How wrong you are. Kids don't tell for many reasons, including that they are threatened by the molester, the perpetrator contributes financially to the family, there's no one to tell that they trust, etc.
Kids react very differently to identical circumstances. Sexually abused victims have often learned to mentally "turn off" from the experience. The connection between love and physical affection may be broken. Therefore they either may be manipulated into sexual scenarios as an adult, or see it as a way to achieve power and control over others.
SJP was cut out of the movie!!!!
Completely cut out!!!! What a loser!!!
Yes, can we get back to talking about me?
So I guess that the men and women who go into prostitution have been abused as well.
I'm also guessing that if your disgusting uncle or father or brother took your body for free then charging for sex would feel empowering.
Pity that there are so many assholes out there who abuse children and exploit weak adults.
way to bring down the room r36...
[quote] Pity that there are so many assholes out there who abuse children and exploit weak adults.
Gretchen Mol was in her 20s, shithead.
What about me? When will I get a biopic?
And Special Guest Appearance by Sharon Stone as The Grandmother.
I knew Linda Lovelace when she was married to Larry Marchiano. My ex-brother-in-law worked with Larry in construction.
She was your basic working class Suffolk County, Lawn Guyland housewife. She told us the story of her ex holding her captive and making her do porno a few years before her book was written and I thought. "That's a great excuse. Stockholm syndrome." This was shortly after the Patty Hearst trial and I'm sure Linda got the idea from Patty Hearst's story. I said, "Wow, you should write a book!" and she said she was going to but was looking to find a publisher. obviously, she found a publisher.
They lived in the Bellport-Moriches-Mastic-Shirley area. Any Lawn Guylanders here should know what that means.
I remember that Larry had a brother and I'm pretty sure Larry's first wife left him and married Larry's brother. Either that or Larry's ex-wife had been married to his brother first. My memory is cloudy but one of them had been married to his brother's ex-wife. It was that kind of a family.
And when I worked at a local hospital where she was a patient a gazillion years ago, the story she gave for having hepatitis B was that she got it from a blood transfusion after she gave birth and lost a lot of blood. Later, i see her story changed and she claimed it was from a blood transfusion she got in a car accident. She was not a terribly truthful person. She was low class and got mixed up in stuff that low class girls sometimes get mixed up in. She saw a chance to redeem herself with the Stockholm syndrome story and she went with it. Can't say as I blame her.
Years later she wrote another book and she made Larry look bad in it, but from what I heard, it was for dramatic purposes and she gave Larry some of the book money for going along with it.
R41, Sounds like Linda had a love/hate relationship with Larry, and some very screwed up ideas about sex, love, and control. I remember reading that when she complained about her husband beating her, her Mother was not at all supportive about her leaving him.
Were both using drugs and heavy drinkers? Not that it justifies bad behavior, but it explains some of it.
Read that Hugh Hefner wanted to watch Linda fuck a dog. He claimed he felt bad afterward when he found out that Linda had not enjoyed it but was in fact coerced.
I liked this film. Loved Sharon and Amanda's performances both. Thought Sarsgaard did well even if he's really a bit old for the role as Linda's Svengali. Adam Brody did very well as Reems. I can't figure out what I think about James Franco as Hugh Hefner; he's still all "spraaaaaang braaaaaaaake" in my head.
It was a typical biopic of a dead subject in that it focused on the one unique thing about her, then flashed back to her struggles in early adulthood (she had a son and was forced by her mother to give him up for adoption before she was 21), then document being horribly abused and whored out by Chuck Traynor, eventually fleeing the marriage/slavery. No nudity save Seyfried's boobs and a blurred shot of Sarsgaard's ass.
Cut to six years later, and she's married with kids and happy, and writing her story. Cue Donahue footage, and eventual reunion with family of origin (where I thought La Stone looked suspiciously fabulous under the bad lipstick.)
Larry looks like the nice guy who helped her straighten up her life in this film.
It's totally Chuck Traynor who's portrayed as this controlling, dominating, coercive thug. He beats her and we see it.
Funny---the film shows Hefner passively-aggressively demanding a blowjob from Linda during a screening of Deep Throat, while he sent Chuck off with some blondes.
R42, to me they were heavy drinkers, but I don't drink. They were the type who always had a beer in their hands and hung out with their friends at bars. My sister was the same way. They smoked pot, but I don't know about other drugs. This was in the mid-late 1970s. They weren't, you know, middle class people. Cash business, tried not to pay taxes; kind of like northern rednecks in the way that Tony Soprano was a northern redneck. They weren't criminals, just kind of lowlife-ish. She and Larry were on welfare while he was working off the books.
Well, I guess they were criminals since that is illegal. But they weren't Tony Soprano type criminals.
Oh, she told us she had seen Sammy Davis Jr suck dick. I was not surprised. But that did not make it into her book. I'm sure her publishers were careful about lawsuits. I never read her book, btw. I read reviews of it and it was pretty much the story she told us.
It was a grim slog. Movies about stalkers/abusers make me uncomfortable..
Did she really not have a gag reflex? I could've deepthroated Harry Reems.
Every 10 years Sharon gives a good performance..
I just saw it and I really liked it. It was very
similar to Boogie Nights, of course it was not nearly as well done, and I really duh the 70's wall to wall music. Peter Sarsgaard was very good in an unlikable role, and Sharon Stone was excellent. I kinda got a kick out of the cameos by Brody and Franco...and Mr Big Chris Noth.
I would give it a solid 7.
I knew Linda in her second incarnation of dumpy hausfrau. She married a regular working class schulb ( like the rest of us ) and raise her kiddies in Center Moriches waterfront town on the south shore of Long Island. She was a surprising big girl, very tall, not very striking. Very very aloof and unfriendly. She always wore long praire dresses...this was the latter 80s and the days of the hippy chicks were long gone. I'm sure she would have been surprised at this but I don't think anyone in our little town gave a shit about her porn her past.
[quote]Read that Hugh Hefner wanted to watch Linda fuck a dog. He claimed he felt bad afterward when he found out that Linda had not enjoyed it but was in fact coerced.
Actually she made "loops" before "Deep Throat". Loops were 8MM or 16MM short silent films used in the peep show booths or stag films. She did one called "Dog Fucker" and it was with a very young Eric Edwards who went on to major straight porn success. You can probably see it online.
Sharon Stone is always great. Even in crap films, she's fantastic. And she's great in this, too. Best thing about the film.
Not only was Sarah Jessica Parker cut from the film, but Chloe Sevigny appears for all of 5 seconds.
[quote]I found a Canyon torrent.
Good quality DVD rips of Lovelace are out there too.
Demi Moore was supposed to appear in a cameo as Gloria Steinem but dropped due to health issues. After Moore dropped out, Mary-Louise Parker was considered as a replacement but Sarah Jessica Parker was cast. Parker accepted the role a week before filming ended, but eventually her scenes did not make the final cut
Was Sammy Davis Jr. portrayed in this film?
Saw it last night. Stone could be nominated but I thought Robert Patrick stole it. Quiet, almost ignoring his family, yet when Linda calls after her fame, he answers the phone and is heartbroken. Great work and I'd nominate him for sure. Could have been as great as "Boogie Nights" but they just skim over things. The production design is weak, you never get the feel it's the 70's and whatever casting director hired James Franco as Hugh Hefner should never work in Hollywood again. WTF were they thinking?
After reading her book I found it incredibly difficult to feel the sympathy for her that she seemed so sure was her due. She did not strike me as a victim, even though I don't doubt for a second that her piimp was just as sleazy and brutal as she made him out to be. I just couldn't get past her lack of self-efficacy and refusal to take any responsibility at all for her own behavior or any of the circumstances she found her self in.
I used to work peripherally in the straight adult industry world (makeup/hair), and the bulk of porn stars are sexually molested. I asked one very pretty and nice girl why she got in the industry and she answered, "I come from a podunk town- this beats working in a Wal-Mart."
Female strippers are way more messed up than female adult actresses.
It's a fascinating industry, but I'm glad I don't work in it anymore-it'll numb you after a while.
The Sammy Davis Jr. dick-sucking is in the book, r46.
What celebrity dog was cast as the German shepherd?
R62 Lena Dunham.
I wish they'd stop trying to make Amanda Seyfried happen. She's nothing but a pair of saucer-eyes. No other discernible talent.
Just watched this. Skinny, hairless little Adam Brody was patently ridiculous as the hairy, buff, manly Harry Reems. A fake mustache does not a performance make.
Similarly, James Franco was totally unconvincing as Hugh Hefner. A man-boy failing at being a man.
Sharon Stone gave exactly the performance I expected her to give, no better, no worse. Was hardly Oscar-worthy.
The film itself was surprisingly inert. Trying to cover too many points of view and mastering none.
