Weiner: I won't withdraw, not even for the Clintons

July 30 No one can convince Anthony Weiner to drop out of the New York City mayoral race, not even Bill or Hillary Clinton. But he still has “enormous respect” for the couple, he said Tuesday. “Let me make it very clear. I’ve got an enormous respect for the Clintons. They’ve been enormous friends to my wife and my family,” Weiner told reporters during a stop in upper Manhattan. There’s “no intent to disrespect.” But, he said, “what I’ve been trying to make clear is that what is important to me in this race is the ideas that animated me to run.” Weiner’s wife, Huma Abedin, is a longtime aide to Hillary Clinton who drew on her connections to marshal support for her husband’s campaign. On Monday evening, asked whether he would quit if asked to do so by the former president and secretary of state, Weiner said he was “not terribly interested in what people who are not voters in the city of New York have to say.” The Clintons live in Westchester County, a suburb. The Clintons have never been happy with Weiner’s quest for political redemption. But since the ex-congressman admitted to sexting after resigning from Congress, Clinton allies have been vocal (if largely anonymous) in their criticism of his continued presence in the race and Abedin’s defense of his campaign.
