‘Burton & Taylor’ Seen By 1.17M In UK; Royal Baby Gives News Channels All-Day Bump

There was an industry-wide delay in reporting overnight ratings in the UK after the mania surrounding yesterday’s Royal Baby coverage. In non-palace-related programming, BBC Four’s biopic Burton & Taylor, starring Dominic West and Helena Bonham Carter, averaged 1.17M viewers for a 5.6% share. The well-reviewed movie was the last original British drama that will be aired on BBC Four due to budget cuts. Burton & Taylor will hit BBC America this fall. Meanwhile, the birth of the future king of England bumped up all-day news channel ratings giving BBC News a 2.8% share versus a three-month average of 1%. Sky News scored a 1.6% share against a .7% three-month average, The Guardian said on Twitter. Sky News peaked with 636,000 viewers at 8:55 PM, for a 2.87% share, according to Broadcast. A peak audience of 3.39M turned to BBC One at 8:55 PM. (BBC One scored the UK’s biggest TV audience since the Olympics with Andy Murray’s Wimbledon win earlier this month which was seen by a peak of 17.3M viewers.) Special ITV News coverage was watched by 3.5M in the 9-10 PM hour, ITV said.
