RIP, Dennis. What a terrific actor. "Midnight Run"..."Get Shorty"...
What was the name of the song used on Crime Story. That should be on his iPod.
Fuck off, R1. The inappropriateness doesn't bother me. It's just not funny.
Unsolved Mysteries will have to look for a new host.
Go back to your fucking Fruit loops, R1.
RIP. For a man who took up acting as a second career, he made quite an impression. Loved Out of Sight.
I actually thought he was terrific on L&O and had great chem with Jesse Martin. Not sure why he was canned after one season.
R6 he was canned after two seasons.
Budget cuts led to him being canned.
[quote]What was the name of the song used on Crime Story.
The theme song was a cover of Del Shannon's "Runaway", with changes to the lyrics. RIP.
He also played a mobster named Al Lombard on "Miami Vice", and was excellent in that role.
Great in the Sopranos too as Phil Leotardo!
I thought he was excellent in the Bette Midler classic "That Old Feeling".
Uh, no, r10. Wrong.
He wasn't in the Sopranos.
really? i mixed him up with someone else then!
That is so weird. I would have sworn I heard he died a couple months ago. I remember thinking at the time he was so good as Nick's dad on New Girl. This is more than deja vu, I would have bet money that he was already dead. Does anyone else recall hearing he died earlier this summer?
He and Michael Imperioli had great chemistry when they teamed up on Law & Order
If I was an old white man, I could be dennis. In fact, this will be me in 35 years.
I always thought he was wrong for L&O. He was way too Chicago for such a New York show so he never seemed to me to be a good fit. I adored his suits and overcoats, though. There was a blue overcoat he wore a lot that I seriously coveted.
R18 he was a cop transferred from Chicago and plunked down in NY on L&O
That was part of his appeal.
He was great on NYPD Blue.
He had great chemistry with Midler in That Old Feeling.
R20, you're thinking of Dennis Franz.
R19, yes, I'm aware that Farina played a Chicago cop who got plunked down in NY on L&O. Which is why it didn't work and they never did anything lile that, before or since.
[quote] Great in the Sopranos too as Phil Leotardo!
Phil Leotardo was Billy Batts
I hate pulmonary emboli because they are so sudden.
I wonder how he got it? A fib? Leg thrombosis from sitting?
He seemed to have a great head of hair, was it a wig?
Poor old fart
I loved him in Analyze This and W.O.P.S.
[quote] Does anyone else recall hearing he died earlier this summer?
I thought he had died when they killed off his character, Jake's dad, on "New Girl." Maybe that's what you were confused about, too.
What causes a blood clot on the lung? Was he a smoker?
R26, age 69 is not all that old.
It is not even old at all by today's standards.
I loved him in "Another Stakeout...the scenes with Rosie O'Donnell and Richard pretending to be a married couple and Dennis Farina can't wait to get out of there...
[quote] Pulmonary Embolism most commonly results from deep vein thrombosis (a blood clot in the deep veins of the legs or pelvis) that breaks off and migrates to the lung, a process termed venous thromboembolism (VTE).
Dennis was always in the same role. Casting people couldn't think beyond his previous life as cop.
He's been doing commercials for Comcast or one of the cable companies lately.
Phil Leotardi was played by Frank Vincent, you fucking mook.
How can you avoid blood clots to the lung? Can you eat something?
[quote]How can you avoid blood clots to the lung? Can you eat something?
Get up and take a walk!
No seriously. You're at increased risk for DVT when you're in a seated or reclined position for a long period of time. Hence, the fashionable anti-embolism stockings you have to wear when you have surgery.
You can also wear them if you're going to be on a plane, or heck, just about anywhere. They're perfect for formal occasions AND casual enough for everyday use!
She also used "he's" instead of "his". I will never listen to her music or watch one of her films again.
I got a pulmonary embolism from my flight from Russia. Doctor said it was a miracle I made it off the plan alive. These are a lot more common than you think, I stayed a week in the hospital with a drip to break up the clots.
^^ that should be PLANE not plan
Dennis Farina 911 Call: He Has Cancer,He Can't Breathe
Dennis Farina was suffering from cancer when he died ... this according to the 911 call placed just days before his death.
During the call -- placed early Saturday morning -- a woman in Farina's home says the actor needs oxygen, and describes him as a "cancer patient" who is having an extremely hard time breathing.
It has never been reported that Farina was diagnosed with cancer.
As we previously reported, the actor passed away Monday in Scottsdale from a blood clot in his lung, which would explain his breathing difficulties.
Farina's cardiologist confirms the actor "had a small cancer 13 years ago that was treated and cured with surgery." He adds Dennis recently had a recurrence of the cancer and was getting treatment.
However, the doc is clear that the death was caused by the blood clot in Farina's lung ... not the cancer.
Man I enjoyed Farina on Law & Order and wish he had stayed for a few more seasons. The writers seemed to know what they were doing by giving Farina's character a somewhat sketchy/shady background, having him dressed to the nines, with a wad of cash in his pocket, but then, well, what went wrong?
Was it really a budget decision to let him go or is there more to that story? Not getting along with the cast or with big, bad, Dick Wolf?
As some others have noted, he was also very funny in a variety of roles... as Lopez' father in "Out of Sight" he was great and yes, I think he and Midler worked well together in "That Old Feeling".
I looked forward to seeing him on TV, wish I had paid a bit more attention and known he was appearing on "New Girl".
RIP Dennis, thanks for the work on the big and small screen.
Dennis Farina was being treated for lung cancer at the time of his death.
He had lung cancer a while back and was treated with surgery, but the cancer reoccurred a couple of months ago.
The blood clot occurred while he was being treated for lung cancer.
He was outstanding in "Crime Story"- terrific, underappreciated series.
Billy Campbell was achingly gorgeous in that as well. "New Girl"'s send-off of Nick's dad now serves as a memorial to Farina's public personna.
Not exaggerating about Campbell. The aching crush I had on him, from CS to "Rocketeer"...
