Over the past few weeks, I've started to wonder about the nearly daily updates on Nelson Mandela's health. When he first became ill, there were reports and I heard them, thought "that's too bad, I hope he's OK", then went on with my day. As the weeks have gone on, I've started to wonder why there are now constant reports on his health.
Now, I totally understand why he is a major world figure, but there are many major world figures out there. I don't remember once hearing a retired leaders health being treated as front page, top of the hour news in countries where he or she was not even the leader.
What is going on here? Just let me know when he's either A) out of the hospital or B) (god forbid) dead. Otherwise, it isn't news.
Just guessing here, but IMO, I believe Mr. Mandela is on life support, is in a vegetative state, and is being kept alive by machines. He is probably being kept alive until his 95th birthday, on July 18th. No one wants to be "the one" to turn off the machines. But at some point even the machines won't be able to stop his lungs from flooding and his heart from stopping.
I'd imagine his wife will be the one to stop this madness and let him go. It may well be that one or more of his kids wants to keep him alive, to "give him a chance to recover." Which at this point, is absurd. His lungs have deteriorated way too much and so has his heart.
Once the machines are turned off, he'll go in a matter of minutes not hours. Perhaps there is dissension in the family. I've read that his kids from various wives are feuding about where various family members are buried. Didn't they attempt to exhume some bodies and transfer them to another burial site? I think there was a recent court dispute about it.
So if they're arguing about the already dead relatives, you know there has to be some family drama about taking Mandela off life support. All this nonsense about him "improving" is pure crap. Not true.
