The move from NYC to the LA studio caused a cast change. Poor sexy Ricardo was replaced by soccer player Tito who kept his shirt on. Shirley Stoller and Dixie and Phil Hartman didn't move.
Miss Yvonne and Cowboy Curtis stayed on.
Cowboy Curtis was Laurence Fishburne.
R1 has it backwards. Tito was the hot, shirtless lifeguard from NYC season one. His LA replacement was Ricardo, who wore a shirt and taught Spanish words.
I adored this show as a kid. I found some episodes to show my own kids (7, 5 & 3) recently and they were totally not interested. I accused them of having lazy, pedestrian taste in children's programming.
My favorite was the rarely seen Mrs. Steve. Does anyone remember when she sat on the cake?
I was 15 when it started in the Fall of '86 and I thought it was a riot. The ending credits music made me sad.
Mrs. Steve was one of the NYC cast who didn't go to LA after Season 1.
I loved that show. And the fact that Cyndi Lauper sang the theme song.
Has anyone read Inside Pee-wee's Playhouse: The Untold, Unauthorized, and Unpredictable Story of a Pop Phenomenon? I've been wanting to buy it...has really good reviews on Amazon.
I've posted a little bit about this before... Miss Yvonne (Lynne Stewart), Cap'n Carl (Phil Hartman) and Mrs. Rene (Suzanne Kent) were all professional and very sweet. George McGrath (Globey, Cowntess and others) ran hot and cold. I didn't get to know Larry Fishburne or either Tito or Ricardo.
Paul and John Paragon (Jambi) -- not so nice and extremely competitive with each other.
In the first year, when they used actual children on the show, Natasha Lyonne was one of Pee-wee's friends.
Someone tell me they remember the Christmas Special..
[quote]Did you watch this as a kid? I'm pretty sure it made me gay.
I read here years ago that John Paragon (Jambi) was actually Reuben's LTP.
The (star-studded!) Christmas special is on YT:
Pee-Wee's Christmas Special
r9, it's an interesting read though it may tarnish some of your memories of the Pee Wee universe. Since it's unauthorized you don't get a lot of insight from anyone still in Reubens' circle. Like r11 says, Reubens wasn't the nicest guy as he achieved fame as Pee Wee and doesn't always come off so great.
You don't wanna get mixed up with a guy like me. I'm a loner, Dottie...a rebel.
[quote]I watch that every December. Love that he got the US Marines to be on the special.
Sorry to break it to you but according to IMBD....
The choir of Marines was actually the Men's Choir of UCLA (in marine uniforms). The producers had hoped to book the actual Marine Corps choir, but they were unavailable at the time of filming.
Oh and there's no Santa Claus. He He
That Christmas Special is laugh out loud funny and I think it's time for another.
Remember when the Del Rubios were on The Golden Girls? Good times!
What was the name of that mean looking puppet with red hair and freckles? I didn't like him.
[quote]Mrs. Steve was one of the NYC cast who didn't go to LA after Season 1.
Mrs. Steve was replaced by Mrs. Rene, who Reubens had worked with years earlier in Cheech & Chong's Nice Dreams.

Production designer Gary Panter ended up coming out, leaving his wife Nicole (who starred in the original LA live run) and I believe had an affair with Reubens.
Lynne Stewart is one of the kindest, most genuine people you will ever meet.
Any word on S. Epatha? She never discusses her Reba the Mail lady.
Fun fact: Miss Yvonne plays a nun in PW's Big Adventure.
