Monroe photographer Bert Stern dead.

It seems Bert Stern died yesterday aged 83, he is the photographer best known for that "Last Sitting" series of photos of Marilyn Monroe taken shortly before she died in 1962. He certainly packaged and repackaged them often enough, there were at least 2 books, posters, exhibitions etc. I actually don't like these MM photos which show a different side to her, is she drugged in some shots? She was drinking at any rate and the flimsy scarves soon fell off ... I must prefer the softer MM as shown in George Barris's photos from about the same time, on the beach at Malibu and at her modest home. These too have been posterised and used in books - I had the one of her sipping champagne on my wall for years, and love those pictures of her in the green towel and the mexican wrap. As Eve Arnold died last year and Stern also gone now, that leaves Barris as the last main Monroe photographer. Stern though did that terrific jazz film "Jazz on a Summer's Day" released in 1960, which covered the Newport Jazz Festival in 1958 and captures that era and the music perfectly, its probably the best jazz film ever.
