Human Intelligence Is Slowly Declining According To Leading Geneticist
Would you be surprised to hear that the human race is slowly becoming dumber, and dumber? Despite our advancements over the last tens or even hundreds of years, some ‘experts’ believe that humans are losing cognitive capabilities and becoming more emotionally unstable. One Stanford University researcher and geneticist, Dr. Gerald Crabtree, believes that our intellectual decline as a race has much to do with adverse genetic mutations. But human intelligence is suffering for other reasons as well. According to Crabtree, our cognitive and emotional capabilities are fueled and determined by the combined effort of thousands of genes. If a mutation occurred in any of of these genes, which is quite likely, then intelligence or emotional stability can be negatively impacted. “I would wager that if an average citizen from Athens of 1000 BC were to appear suddenly among us, he or she would be among the brightest and most intellectually alive of our colleagues and companions, with a good memory, a broad range of ideas, and a clear-sighted view of important issues. Furthermore, I would guess that he or she would be among the most emotionally stable of our friends and colleagues,” the geneticist began his article in the scientific journal Trends in Genetics. Further, the geneticist explains that people with specific adverse genetic mutations are more likely than ever to survive and live amongst the ‘strong.’ Darwin’s theory of ‘survival of the fittest’ is less applicable in today’s society, therefore those with better genes will not necessarily dominate in society as they would have in the past. While this hypothesis does have some merit: are genes really the primary reason for the overall cognitive decline of the human race? If humans really are lacking in intelligence more than before, it’s important to recognize other possible causes. Let’s take a look at how our food system plays a role in all of this. It’s sad, but true; our food system today is contributing to lower human intelligence across the board. Pesticides are Diminishing Human Intelligence One study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that pesticides, which are rampant among the food supply, are creating lasting changes in overall brain structure — changes that have been linked to lower intelligence levels and decreased cognitive function. Specifically, the researchers found that a pesticide known as chlorpyrifos (CPF) has been linked to ”significant abnormalities”. Further, the negative impact was found to occur even at low levels of exposure. Lead researcher Virginia Rauh, a professor at the Mailman School of Public Health, summarized the findings: “Toxic exposure during this critical period can have far-reaching effects on brain development and behavioral functioning.” Processed Foods, High Fructose Corn Syrup Making People ‘Stupid’ Following 14,000 children, British researchers uncovered the connection between processed foods and reduced IQ. After recording the children’s’ diets and analyzing questionnaires submitting by the parents, the researchers found that if children were consuming a processed diet at age 3, IQ decline could begin over the next five years. The study found that by age 8, the children had suffered the IQ decline. On the contrary, children who ate a nutrient-rich diet including fruit and vegetables were found to increase their IQ over the 3 year period. The foods considered nutrient-rich by the researchers were most likely conventional fruits and vegetables. Interestingly, one particular ingredient ubiquitous in processed foods and sugary beverages across the globe -high fructose corn syrup – has been tied to reduced IQ. The UCLA researchers coming to these findings found that HFCS may be damaging the brain functions of consumers worldwide, sabotaging learning and memory. In fact, the official release goes as far to say that high-fructose corn syrup can make you ‘stupid’. Gene mutations may have something to do with the ongoing decline in human intelligence, but let’s stop to think for a moment what we’re doing to ourselves to make this decline even more prominent. Maybe Cheney's idea of a permanent Republican majority isn't so far-fetched.
You're probably right. Smart people know enough to use paragraphs.
This is tremendous news!
Holy crap! PARAGRAPHS!
Well, we all know that birthrate is falling in developed nations, whereas underdeveloped nations are still breeding like rabbits. That has something to do with it.
Moreover, in the US, highly educated and professional people are having fewer and fewer children (if at all).
Baloney. People are smarter than ever thanks to the internet despite what any old fart says.
Go to the link provided, maybe your reading comprehension won't be as insulted...or not.
It seems fairly well reasoned, but can you spot the Boo-Boo in his logic?
I absolutely believe it. I know I'll sound bitter (and I'm not an old fart - I'm only in my 30s. Yes, really) but the current generation of Millenials are fucking useless. I work with and socialize with them and they know nothing about anything except their smartphones, their iPads/tablets, and video games. That's it. They are extremely stupid, self-absorbed and entitled with no common sense or intellectual curiosity whatsoever. I'm only one generation ahead of them and I CANNOT BELIEVE how dumbed-down things got in just one geneations' time. It's shocking.
Couldn't he have just watched "Idiocracy" instead?
r8 how are people smarter thanks to the internet?
Dr. Crabtree is not a scientist, apparently but a blowhard.
"People are smarter than ever thanks to the internet despite what any old fart says."
The intellectual story lines in porn are so pervasive and very educational.
I hope the human race becomes extinct, I really can't stand most of them.
The food companies know they are poisoning us in ways that affect physical and mental health but they are powerful and own congress and the FDA. You basically have to become an expert to avoid all they dangerous food out there even food one would think of as healthy. Impossible for a poor family with no access to fruit and vegetables in their neighborhoods. Not to mention basic vitamins and minerals no longer in food in sufficient quantities for a properly functioning brain.
On top of the chemicals in food affecting out brain is all the new chemicals in the air, especially our homes with flame retardant sofas and carpets and many other materials including chemicals that affect the brain and cause cancer. Babies and children are especially vulnerable.
Then there is everything we put in and on out skin. The clothes from china, lotions, detergents...it all adds up to too much for our body to get rid of.
The chemical companies and the food industry has become one giant lab and we are the rats. The family farmers have either been squeezed out of forced to follow suit. They represent only 4% of our food now.
Top all that off with all the pharmacuticals we take, especially the psych ones and no wonder we now have 3 times as many people on mental disability than even 30 years ago, let alone just the loss of IQ points.
[quote]that humans are losing cognitive capabilities and becoming more emotionally unstable.
Sounds pretty accurate.
It's true that the my grandparents generation seemed much more resilient mentally and physically and it gradually declines throughout the following generations.
They grew up on real food. They could eat lard and sweets and whole milk and still be healthy.
They and my parents generation also seemed to be more social with neighbors and friends. In person. There was also more reading and they didn't grow up with TV.
[quote]humans are losing cognitive capabilities and becoming more emotionally unstable
One would only need to read DataLounge for a few days to come to that conclusion.
R12 beat me to it. The first scene of "Idiocracy" explains it all.

Who benefits from a mass IQ decrease?
Ask the Wal Mart heirs.
[quote]Who benefits from a mass IQ decrease?
The Republican Party and all of the churches in the country.
I blame television.
It could be true. Social media seems to breed people who are very self involved and don't seem to think deeply about anything.
I'd like to know how he assesses the intellectual capability and emotional stability of the average 10th-11th century B.C.E.. Athenian?

I think there are a few of those posting here.
^the one's of above average intelligence, no doubt.
Totally agree, R11.
R19, Talking to people who ate high fat diets, once upon a time, all of them either ate very small portions of food or did an exhaustive amount of exercise, often in very cold weather.
Studies have been made of the Amish, known for eating a high calorie but a truly all natural, chemical free diet. They walk an average of 7 miles a day, every day, and do a great deal of physical chores throughout the day.
I blame Reality TV.
Finally, an explanation for the existence of Justin Beiber and Taylor Swift.
This seems like a good place to request this: could someone please start a thread about Charish Perriwinkle, an 8-year-old Jacksonville girl who was murdered after her mother practically handed her over to a recently-released sex offender she just met? I'd love to hear Datalounge's take on this.
"Cherish was reported as being abducted Friday night from the Walmart on Lem Turner Road. Her body was found Saturday morning in a wooded area off Broward Road.
Williams said Cherish's mother met Smith at a Dollar General on Edgewood Avenue West about 7 p.m. Friday. Two younger children, 4 and 5 years old, were also there and remain in the mother's custody.
Smith offered to buy food and clothes for Perrywinkle's family at the nearby Walmart, Williams said. The family was in the Walmart for a couple of hours, he said.
The mother agreed to let Cherish go with Smith to the McDonald's inside the Walmart. The two did not return and the mother called police."

If Aristotle and Plato had only had Facebook... Imagine what they could have accomplished!
R11 is spot on.
...and Thomas Edison, and Einstein...and...
I think it's a leap to say that the human species as a whole is getting "dumber." Intelligence and reasoning ability are fluid and it's possible that it's not so much a decline as it is a change in the way we process information and problem solve in the digital age. That said, people (at least here in the U.S.) are spoiled, complacent, and generally ignorant of the world outside the daily minutiae of their lives. Learning for learning's sake is a lost pursuit, especially with younger generations. All we seem to care about is keeping up with the latest trends and making money.
I'm not surprised at all, I've been on DL for over 6 months now. I would say mankind is much more susceptible to brainwashing now as well.
This is not genetic, it is socially induced.
R17, it is people's laziness. Though the things you note that we need to do or avoid are likely valid, people seem to have no interest in doing most of it. They would rather spend all day on Facebook, shop, or follow the Kardashians than read and follow information on staying healthy and that includes mental health.
Of course the problem arises when a normal healthy person needs repairs, medical treatment or other work done and he/she surrounded by morons except for the very random craftsman or expert out there who is very difficult to track down.
Human intelligence is QUICKLY declining, as per the latest Nielsen TV ratings.
That's a good one, r42!
It's declined sharply on DL in last five years.
Where did all the smart, witty DL'ers go? I used to laugh out loud several times a day while hanging out here. Now it's rare that I do.
The last comfort of a failed existence is faith that things will only get worse.
