Here's what I don't understand about anti-gay people.
From my understanding, their biggest problem with the acceptance of homosexuality, or as they say, the promotion of homosexuality, is that it will destroy the nuclear family, thus the de-population of the earth. I've heard this from religious and non-religious alike.
If that's the case - and I am pretty sure it is NOT the case - that presumes that people will choose a homosexual lifestyle, right? Why would anyone choose homosexuality if they're heterosexual?
I mean, if people chose, I could see their point because it is easier to get along with your own gender, but most people are not wired that way. Most are wired to fall in love with the opposite gender, or am I missing something and we're all wired to fall for the same gender? Is that the big secret? I know I am, but maybe I'm the norm and because homosexuality has been demonized most will not admit to it.
In other words, all of these "straight" men are bearding and truthfully desire men. Could it be?
Their biggest problem is IGNORANCE.
And then there's the purveyors of homophobia who have everything to gain in terms of power and money by perpetuating it.
Here's another thing. Gay people are the last group (besides the Muslims, and the poor) that it's okay to demonize. The ruling class NEEDS groups of people to demonize. That's how they stay in power.
OP I used to feel the same way, I could not understand how some people could say things that were so easily discredited. Then I realized something. The people who make these statements, the people who lead this movement are being paid to say these things. Its all about money for them. They earn a pretty income demonizing people. As long as hating gay people pays, they will keep it up. For some of them, its really the only work they know how to do.
OP, I believe you've got it all wrong. If the issue was repopulating the Earth, more likely increasing the number of Christians or another religion, anti-gay's would also be against childless straights and for plural marriage.
Instead some insist on legislating sexually acceptable practices. Oral and anal sex was once deemed unnatural and illegal, even for straights.
Those who take the Bible literally use it as justification for their positions. The same stigma is attached to the world's oldest profession.
But there are people who truly believe that homosexuality will destroy the family. They are not paid....they truly believe this. Unless they are closeted homosexuals themselves, how could they possibly believe that heterosexuals will choose homosexuality?
R5, you constantly hear these homophobes talking about 'choice' and 'temptation'.
Combine that with studies that prove that very homophobic men are turned on by gay porn, while non-homophobic straight men are not... and I can come to only one conclusion.
Most of these idiots are bisexual. For them it CAN be a 'temptation' away from what they see as 'normal', and it IS a choice for them to not act on their desires.
And because they're small-minded self-absorbed idiots, they cannot imagine anyone else being any different. They think EVERYONE feels that way. That gay people are just 'weak' against the 'temptation'.
When you get right down to it, the problem that anti-gay people have with homosexuality is butt sex. The rest is just window dressing.
"But the Bible says....and I'm a Christian."
The morbidly obese bitch who organized the National Organization for Marriage (NOM), to fight marriage equality is a total failure with her own marraige. The father of Maggie Gallagher's son refused to marry her. When she finally trapped a guy into marriage, it didn't last. He probably is paid by NOM to keep quiet about their failed marriage.
DO NOT try to apply logic to their arguments. They simply will not hold up.
They are very much afraid of many things, change, and their own erotic impulses among others.
"Why would anyone choose homosexuality if they're heterosexual?"
Who doesn't want to be fabulous?
They believe the earth would be depopulated because they believe everyone is gay (including themselves).
Yup. People who think straight people can be "tempted" into gay sex, must think most people are gay(or bisexual)-- including themselves.
Yeah yeah and heterosexuals choose to be heterosexual. There was a great video I saw of people who said this were asked when they chose to be heterosexual. The responses were hilarious. Has anyone posted it?
What did they say, R14?
I remember listening to some phone-in show on the radio and a perfectly nice sounding woman felt that if homosexuality became more acceptable more and more men would move over.
R16, I've talked to many ladies who really believe that to be true; more acceptance means more men would declare themselves to be gay. They don't realize that there's always been homosexuality, and not just in ancient Greece. People are really naive.
R16, Ironically that statement might be somewhat true. You see, over a certain age, single straights avoid fundie churches because they're expected to be celibate until marriage. Therefore the only single men that attend tend to be under their mothers' thumb and possibly hiding their homosexual tendencies.
Once married, men are more likely to attend with their conservative wives. Don't forget many of them have gotten married because of societal expectations. It's a well-known fact, even discussed on Oprah, that there are a lot of gay hookups among church goers pretending to be straight. Therefore ladies may see acceptance of homosexuality as the equivalent of outing of fundie male church goers who were really always gay.
I once called an anti-gay blogger on this, wrote him and said "...but if all homosexuality is chosen, and you have to fight to keep men from choosing to be gay, then same-sex relationships must be more desirable".
He wrote back and said something like "There are a lot of reasons men might chose the homosexual lifestyle, bad relationship with a woman, the desire to avoid the responsibilities of family life, recruited at a vulnerable age, blah blah nobody is born gay etc.".
In short, that guy was too stupid to grasp simple logic.
R19, Many people are too stupid or uneducated in the realities of life. I'll bet that if you do a poll you'd find plenty of people who aren't aware of the "born gay" logic. You would not believe what fundies are told in church.
That's the talking point, OP, but really what's behind it is the need to hate others, to feel superior, more entitled to social esteem, and to deprive those they hate of their rights.
I think MOST of it is certain people not dealing with their own feelings of being gay.
What R2 said. Where would Hitler have been without his Jews?
Meanwhile the UN is increasing future population estimates dramatically. They now say Africa will have 4 BILLION people all by itself by 2100.
If there is anything this planet doesn't need, it is heterosexuality.
More homosexuality could save the planet, R24. I've thought that ever since I realized I was of the homosexual persuasion.
Homosexuality will save the world, despite the grumblings of the phreaks.
"Oh my God. I'm back. I'm home. All the time, it was... We finally really did it ... You Maniacs! You blew it up! Ah, damn you! God damn you all to hell!"
We are switching to the new platform for The DataLounge this weekend. All of our mobile users have been using it for over a week and all first time users have been using it for about a month - which adds up to well over one million users. So we're ready to end this phase of the testing and move everybody to the new site. (more)
And yes, we've changed the look and some of how it operates.
Yes, we know you just *hate* it in well in advance.
Yes, we know we suck.
Yes, we are the biggest suckers that ever sucked.
But it was time for a change and with the huge shift to mobile it was long overdue. We've taken this opportunity not only to update the look but also make major changes under the hood (or "bonnet" if you're either British or pretentious or both). And we have to prepare for 2016 - a presidential election year where we can normally expect to see a 60% jump in traffic (yes, we've seen 5 presidential elections so far…Christ we're old).
The site has a bunch - nay, plethora - of new features which will make the site more usable: better search, the ability to ignore posters and threads, see link previews, to pick up a thread where you left off, spam and malware filtering and more.
If you want you can go explore and see for yourself, Click here.
And while running the tests we've noticed two interesting reactions to the new system - people are spending more time on the site and more people that come stay around longer and look at more stuff. Both good things. Yay!
Possibly we've not slain all the dragons and there will be issues that come up during the switchover. There's a help button in the lower right hand corner of the page which you can use to send us bug reports.
Please include as much information about the hardware (PC, Mac, Tablet, Phone etc), operating system (Windows, Mac OS, Android, iOS etc) and browser (Chrome, Safari, Opera, Internet Explorer etc) that you are using as possible to help us replicate and fix the problem.
Please note that complaints about colors, fonts, icons and the like are not "bugs" - they are design choices that we've made and we expect one or two cases of world-class bitching. But they won't actually cause headaches, scurvy, heart attacks, Restless Leg Syndrome, Morgellon's Disease or the vapors (but have your smelling salts at hand just in case).
Talking to DataLounge servers. Please wait a moment...
