I got my last email from the Village Voice because I unsubscribed.
No Musto, no me.
OP = Michael Musto
I stopped reading it ages ago but would read Musto online - so did he get fired? I happened to see him at Columbia, in Hamilton Hall, in '89 or so, and I told him how much I loved his gossip. He was very tall. He thanked me graciously. So - did he get fired?
You're so clever R1!!!!!
Good for you OP - I hope you let them exactly why...
My original response got rejected for some WEBBY reason. Hmmmm.
No, I am not Michael but I did correspond with him a little and I found him to be the real deal.
I remember growing up in the Midwest and I subscribed to the VV in the 70s. I poured over every issue to see what life was like in the big city.
Ahhhh, Studio 54...
Is g a y l i n g also a banned word?
The only other thing worth reading in the VV was the theater reviews, which are also history now. I guess we've seen the last of that rag. Too bad, though, really, it's been unreadable and irrelevant for years.
For me the appeal of the VV was J. Hoberman's film reviews and Musto's gossip, plus the fantastic investigative work into things like the Inslaw/Promis affair. No Hoberman, no Musto... no point.
Hoberman's been gone for a while. I personally hated Hoberman--found him unbearably pretentious and myopic, though I know many people liked him and found his criticism valuable--but his firing was one of the first signs that the VV wasn't long for this world.
Aren't they trying to re-position "the brand" more center/right? Insert sinking ship pic here.
Really, r12? Did you read that anywhere in particular? Because I can't imagine that showing up in print and people not freaking out about it. It's been a liberal institution for ages.
I think they have found the end of the road and are positioning for a sale to the Koch Bros.
[quote]I poured over every issue
Aside from spilling your drink, did you read each issue carefully?
That's a pretty low standard, OP
r16, to paraphrase Midler, my standards are low, but they are mine.
Good riddance Musto is annoying, a drama queen, bigot, hypocrite, and batshit crazy.
